Bartels King Peggy will speak at the Weinberg Center for the Arts on Friday, September 13, at 7:30 pm. Peggielene (Peggy) Bartels, a native of Ghana, moved to Washington, D.C. in her mid-twenties to work at her country s embassy. She became an American citizen in 1997 and in 2008, quite unexpectedly, was chosen to be king of Otuam, a town of 7,000 people on Ghana s central coast. Her first two years as king unfold in a way that is stranger than fiction, and quite heartwarming. In the end, a deeply traditional African town is uplifted by the ambitions of its decidedly modern female king, and Peggy is herself transformed, from an ordinary secretary to the heart and hope of her community. One Maryland One Book Author Tour An Evening with King Peggy Friday, September 13, 7:30 pm Weinberg Center for the Arts Free event. No tickets required. For information, visit weinbergcenter.org. Celebrating its sixth year in 2013, One Maryland One Book (OMOB) brings together diverse people in communities across the state through the shared experience of reading the same book. A full statewide listing of OMOB programs can be found at onemarylandonebook.org. One Maryland One Book is a program of the Maryland Humanities Council.

2 An astonishing and wonderful book about a real-life Mma Ramotswe. An utter joy. Alexander McCall Smith, author of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series The Maryland Humanities Council has successfully partnered with FCPL and Frederick Reads on many occasions, enabling us to bring One Maryland One Book events to Frederick County residents. Andrea Lewis, OMOB Coordinator Meet the Author On a hot August night in 2008, Peggielene Bartels was startled awake by a long-distance call. It was her cousin in Ghana with incredible news: Peggy s uncle Joseph, king of a beautiful village on the west coast of Africa, had died, and sacred rituals revealed Peggy to be the next king of Otuam. Thinking it was a joke, she almost hung up. How could a secretary in Washington, D.C., an American citizen, be an African king? Not to mention that she was a woman. But it was true, and, in an instant, Peggy s life was forever changed. King Peggy: An American Secretary, Her Royal Destiny, and the Inspiring Story of How She Changed an African Village chronicles Peggy s astonishing adventures as king of a town half a world away. Upon arriving in Otuam for her crowning ceremony, she discovers the reality behind the fairy tale: the town has no running water, no doctor, and no high school; the king s palace is in ruins, and the town coffers are empty. Peggy s determination to change all this sets her on a collision course with Otuam s stubborn male elders, who are unaccustomed to heeding any woman. Yet she finds unexpected allies: her confidante, Cousin Comfort; the sober and reliable contractor, Nana Kwesi, who helps rebuild the palace; and a fisherwoman as strong as Peggy herself. Peggy opens Otuam s first bank account and finds sponsors so the town s children can attend school. But she also begins to wonder if there is something rotten in the state of Otuam. The late king, it seems, died of fright; his children are conspiring to sabotage his funeral; and suddenly Peggy does not know whom to trust. King Peggy is not just a great read for book lovers, says Andrea Lewis, One Maryland One Book Coordinator. It s also an inspiring example for anyone on the impact of one determined individual. Many long to find their calling. In becoming king, Peggielene Bartels shines a light on the power of conviction and its ability to transform. Lewis and her colleagues at the Maryland Humanities Council are pleased with the enthusiasm shown across the state each year for the One Maryland One Book selection. People love feeling part of a community, she explains. Having so many people reading the same book at the same time offers another point of connection. Special thanks to our One Maryland One Book sponsors: 2

5 Music on the Terrace Free Concerts on September Fridays We know what September feels like but what does it sound like? You only need to go as far as Carroll Creek in Downtown Frederick to listen and find out. Every Friday in September, Music on the Terrace brings talented musicians to the Carroll Creek Park Amphitheater across the creek from C. Burr Artz Public Library for your enjoyment. You re welcome to bring your own picnic and a blanket or just stroll along the Creek and soak up the tunes on a fall afternoon. September 6 Bonerama (New Orleans Brass Funk Rock) Even in a city that doesn t play by the rules, New Orleans Bonerama is something different. They can evoke vintage funk, classic rock, and free improvisation in the same set maybe even in the same song. Founded by members of Harry Connick s band, Bonerama has been repeatedly recognized by Rolling Stone magazine, praised for their crushing ensemble riffing, human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls. As co-founder Mark Mullins puts it, We thought we could expand what a New Orleans brass band could do. Bands like Dirty Dozen started the anything goes concept, bringing in the guitars and the drum kit and using the sousaphone like a bass guitar. We thought we could push things a little further. The Bonerama Horns have become one of the most in-demand horn sections in New Orleans and appear on several songs on Alec Ounsworth s (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) 2009 release Mo Beauty, R.E.M. s 2010 release Collapse into Now, and Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars 2010 release Rise and Shine. tank Ensemble September 13 Cabinet (Modern Acoustic Bluegrass) An inclusive and engaging energy is the uniting through-line as Cabinet weaves bluegrass, country, and folk influences to powerful effect. Tight dynamics punctuate gorgeous, soaring harmonies as down-to-earth rhythm and lyrics give way to dreamy jams that are the musical equivalent of the back road scenic route. Cabinet is a band that has outgrown any regional favorite tag and has progressed to a broader fan base, all while retaining their signature sound. The band has played many great venues and festivals across the land and has shared the stage with Infamous Stringdusters, Railroad Earth, Dark Star Orchestra, Keller Williams, 7 Walkers, and many more. September 20 Chaise Lounge (Jazz, Swing, and Pop) Chaise Lounge performs a blend of music that sounds like it was recorded at Capital Recording Studios in 1962 and somehow found its way into today s pop charts. The band s music has been referred to as Early Stereo. The combination of five of the Washington area s top jazz musicians, along with the luminous vocals of Marilyn Older, is truly enjoyable. September 27 Fishtank Ensemble (Gypsy Jazz) The LA Weekly calls Fishtank s sound cross pollinated gypsy music one of the most thrilling young acts on the planet. Formed in 2005 and playing everywhere from the hippest LA clubs to festivals, cultural centers, museums, parades, and even on the street, Fishtank includes two explosive violins, the world s best slap bass player, musical saw, flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar, trombone, opera, jazz and gypsy vocals, accordion, and one little banjolele. Tackling everything from French hot jazz to wild Serbian and Transylvanian gypsy anthems, Flamenco, and oddball originals, this band is a not-to-be-missed event for world music lovers. Music on the Terrace concerts begin at 11:30 am and end at 1:30 pm. The event is open to all ages at no charge. Concerts will move indoors in the event of rain. For details, call or visit fcpl.org. Music on the Terrace is made possible through the generous support of: The C. Burr Artz Trust

6 Frederick Speaker Series The second season of the Frederick Speaker Series celebrates wide-ranging viewpoints and topics, and Frederick County Public Libraries continues our partnership with the series, offering meet-and-greet receptions with the speakers to benefit FCPL s children s programs. We are planning a diverse line-up of thought leaders and luminaries who will share their stories and knowledge. Be sure to mark your calendars and stay tuned for more speaker and ticket details. Sneak Peek Frederick Speaker Series Benjamin Carson, M.D. April 9, 2014, 7:30 pm Weinberg Center for the Arts Library reception to follow visit weinbergcenter.org for details. Ben Carson s remarkable journey from tough, inner-city youth to history-making neurosurgeon celebrates and illustrates the power we all have to excel and influence others. As the son of a single mother in a tough urban neighborhood, Carson was running with the wrong crowd and failing in school and feeling as though he had no way out. He could easily have spiraled downward, but he chose another path. Driven by a passion for science and helping those less fortunate, Carson pursued medicine and ultimately became one of the most respected neurosurgeons in the world. His riveting presentation inspires audiences to take charge of their lives, no matter what obstacles confront them. Soft-spoken yet charismatic, Carson commands the stage. He captivates people with a compelling presentation that shares the keys to turning great challenges into still greater triumphs. Carson had to take his own advice recently when an aggressive form of cancer struck, and his focus turned to survival and recovery. It was just the latest chapter in Carson s life, once again proving the power of the determined mind. Carson s life is chronicled in the original TNT movie, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. He is author of several books, including the New York Times bestseller, America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great. This summer, after 40 years of medical endeavors, Carson retired and today serves as Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University. He also writes a weekly opinion column for The Washington Times. 6

10 So Long, Summer Another FCPL Summer Reading Program has drawn to a close, but the memories of leisurely reading, fun activities, and lively programs during the lazy, hazy days of summer linger on. This summer, FCPL partnered with Westview Promenade for a fabulous Summer Reading Program kick-off with Mr. Jon and Friends. More than 600 people turned out to sing and dance and many of them registered for the Summer Reading Program that day. First Friday Fun Fests (ongoing into October, 10-11:30 am) continued to attract hundreds of kids and their caregivers throughout the summer for storytimes, LEGO-building, craft activities with PNC Bank volunteers, and product sampling with Westview merchants. Keyote, the Frederick Keys beloved mascot, even stopped by for a visit! Of course, there was plenty of fun to be had at FCPL branches county-wide, including live performances by Charlie Hope, Leonardo, and Milkshake, as well as magic demonstrations, puppet shows, and animal meet-and-greets. Our free programs are the cornerstone of our Summer Reading Program each year and something families really look forward to, says Janet Vogel, Children s Services Supervisor at C. Burr Artz. It s so important to encourage kids to keep reading throughout the summer, Vogel continues, adding that multiple studies have shown that reading over the summer helps kids beat the summer slide, which means that they slide back from their reading level at the end of the school year to the level at which they were reading at the beginning of the school year. Two recent studies have demonstrated that Summer Reading Programs at libraries are instrumental in beating the summer slide. Any type of reading helps kids maintain their skills, and reading for pleasure increases the likelihood that they will pick out a second book when they finish the first, Vogel says. All of us at FCPL are thrilled with the response to our Summer Reading Program and hope that all the participants will keep reading and come back next summer for more fun! Thank You, Sponsors The growing success of FCPL s Summer Reading Program wouldn t be possible without the support of our generous sponsors. The Frederick News-Post employees got into the spirit of the Dig Into Reading theme and helped kids plant seeds in pots made from recycled newsprint. PNC Bank staff volunteered at library branches to help present programs and to share information about being fiscally responsible including how to open a savings account. 12 50 Years of Literacy A Special Anniversary Event In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Literacy Council of Frederick County will host an evening with David Brooks, well-known journalist, commentator, and author, at the Weinberg Center for the Arts on Wednesday, October 23, at 7:30 pm. An Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times since 2003, Brooks is also a frequent commentator on National Public Radio, PBS Newshour, Charlie Rose, and NBC s Meet the Press. He served as senior editor at The Weekly Standard and was a contributing editor at Newsweek and Atlantic Monthly. Writer David Warren identifies Brooks as the sort of conservative pundit that liberals like, someone who is sophisticated and engages with the liberal agenda. Brooks is the author of Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There and On Paradise Drive: How We Live Now (And Always Have) in the Future Tense, both published by Simon & Schuster, and The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, published by Random House. All proceeds from the October 23 event and the Meet and Greet opportunity that precedes Brooks presentation will support Literacy Council of Frederick County (LCFC) services. LCFC is dedicated to combating adult illiteracy and ensuring that all adults in Frederick County have the written and oral language skills necessary to support themselves and their families to become better citizens. Since its inception in 1963, LCFC has helped more than 7,500 adults learn to read and write and to speak English. It is estimated that some 17,000 Frederick County adults (both American born and international immigrants) currently lack basic literacy proficiency. At present, more than 100 trained volunteers are providing free, one-on-one basic literacy and English as a Second Language tutoring sessions to the LCFC s more than 150 enrolled students. However, more tutors are needed in order to fully respond to requests for assistance. Learn more by visiting frederickliteracy.org. ON MY NIGHTSTAND Shannon Moore Manager, Sustainability and Environmental Resources Frederick County On my nightstand is Energy for Future Presidents by Richard A. Muller. It s a great primer for anyone who either a) wants to be President or b) like me, wants to better understand how science relates to current events. I am also reading a bunch of pressure cooking cookbooks, especially Pressure Perfect by Lorna Sass. Pressure cookers are energy efficient and fast. I just read Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, which I loved; the protagonist is a fierce young woman who survives crushing poverty and a diabolical contest through her wits and humanity. I also just read the most recent issue of Progressive Farmer, which helps farmers find profitable niches in our rapidly changing economy. My reading list includes In Defense of Food: An Eater s Manifesto by Michael Pollan. We live in a region where we have affordable access to farm-fresh foods, and I love to read thinkers who understand the value of local economies and real food. Cynthia Scott CEO and Executive Producer, 3 Roads Communications I ve read all the Game of Thrones books by George Martin. It s fun to read the books and then see how they treat it in the TV series. I also read Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick and am looking forward to seeing the movie version. Two favorites I recently re-read are Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Follow us on Twitter! Pastor Dave Albertson Living Grace Lutheran Church With young kids it s hard to read for long periods of time, so I don t get the chance to read big literary masterpieces or vast philosophical systems. Instead, collections of essays, periodicals, and graphic novels clutter my shelves. I m currently enjoying Chuck Klosterman and his new book I Wear the Black Hat. Wired magazine and aldaily.com are perennial favorites. But my true love is comic books, specifically anything by Jonathan Hickman or Gerard Way.
