1 FREE Phone Amie on (027) or APRIL 2014 GEARING UP FOR CHANGE Advertorial From 1 July this year rubbish in your wheelie bins will be collected every two weeks instead of weekly. Why has fortnightly refuse collection been introduced? The move was agreed to by Council as one of the actions within the Waste Minimisation and Management Plan 2012 to lead us Towards Zero Waste and a Sustainable Central Otago. Fortnightly collection will help us: Reduce the amount of material going to landfill preserving capacity for future generations Reduce costs Keep material that is not waste out of the landfill Minimise greenhouse gas emissions The shift to fortnightly refuse collection from 1 July 2014 will help us change our behaviour from throwing away as our first option. It s too easy to throw things away and expect someone else to deal with our waste, but let s face facts there is no away is there? The transition won t be easy for all our communities, so Central Otago District Council, Central Otago WasteBusters and MAD4CO (Making a Difference for Central Otago) have joined forces on a Gearing up for Change campaign to tackle this challenge together throughout Central Otago. Check out for archived columns we ve been running in the CO News, as well as further information to help you gear up for the change. Further details about this and other events around the Gearing Up For Change campaign will be posted on Council s website and Facebook page Recycling Facilities in the Maniototo Ward Household recycling can be taken to the following dropoff points: Ranfurly Northland Street (Charlemont St end of Northland St car park) or Ranfurly transfer station on Drumglass Road Naseby - Leven St Oturehua - behind Gilchrist s store Patearoa Patearoa Recreation Reserve Please make sure you wash and squash all recyclables to maximise the use of the drop-off facilities. Gearing Up For Change Workshop in the Maniototo MAD4CO will be holding a workshop in Ranfurly this month covering composting and recycling. 4 COMMUNITY CORNER Members of the Waipiata community took the opportunity to enjoy the long days while they re here and had a hit of tennis at the Waipiata Domain. Although a sneaky wee easterly came up the evening was enjoyed by all. The domain has been well used by campers and motor homes, some staying for extended periods of time! All proceeds from the donations made by campers go back into the Waipiata community. Summer in Naseby turned out to be kind to holidaymakers. Visitors have been enjoying the Swimming Dam, walking in the forest, mountain biking, dog-walking, tennis, coffee stops, pub visits, Naseby Store ice creams, and checking out the museums. It s pleasing to see the refurbishment of the Masonic Lodge building on the main street of Naseby coming together. This iconic building, frequently photographed and admired, was in danger of being lost forever without major repair work. It now has a new roof and a completely re-built front which faithfully matches the original. It is turning into a unique holiday house to be enjoyed for many more years Benchmark Construction Ltd are currently installing a new 375 diameter concrete storm water pipeline in the berm on the eastern side of Northland Street in Ranfurly. This section is expected to be completed by 18 th April. They will also be re-establishing a 300 diameter pipe under the state highway connecting up the manholes in Bute Street. 5 BOWLING TOURNAMENT Tournament Committee The 31st Ranfurly Women s Bowling Tournament was held on the 17th to 20th of March. Players from all around Central Otago, Dunedin and Christchurch competed in the fours. Twenty eight teams entered and the pairs were held on Wednesday. The weather was kind with the exception of one foggy start which soon lifted quickly and gave way to a very successful competition. Everyone enjoyed themselves and comments included, "great to be back, meeting friends on the bowling green again, wonderful hospitality and fun entertainment, and we will be back again next year". Patearoa bowling ladies are Frances Wood, Beryl Reid, Rosemary Hall and Donella Hore. The Bowling Tournament Committee would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the local businesses of the Maniototo and the various teams and players who supplied us with raffles for the tournament. A special thank you to all the helpers over the three days of bowling as your help is needed to run such an event and we appreciate all your help. Lastly, thank you to all the players who competed. 6 NEW PICTURE FRAMING SERVICE Advertorial Have you got precious photos, prints, portraits or paintings hiding under the bed, in the back of your wardrobe, or heaven forbid, in the dark recesses of your garage? Perhaps the frame looks terrible in your lounge or you were never sure how to get your favourite picture looking good on the wall. Maniototo now has a new picture framing service that can help free these special pictures. Janyne Fletcher and her partner, Ranfurly local, Deane Cameron have launched Central Otago Picture Framing to provide custom framing in the Maniototo and throughout Central Otago. They can assist you with selecting quality framing that works with your decor, personal taste and budget. Janyne is also an award winning photographer and has a collection of limited edition local photographs available for purchase which can be framed to meet your requirements. Some of her artwork is available to view and purchase at The Practice, Ranfurly. Whether you are framing a poster, your child s first masterpiece or a family portrait, custom framing will enhance and protect your artwork for years to come. In most cases you will keep a well framed piece of art longer than much of your furniture! If you would like to have chat to us about that special picture you have put off framing for years, give us a call on or visit our website MUSEUM MUSINGS Jan Bean A steady flow of visitors to Naseby has meant a busy time at the museums. Recently one evening, Sam was showing the Settlers Museum collection to a visitor from Australia whose great-grandfather just happened to be Thomas Callender, the father of New Zealand curling, who established the Dunedin Curling Club in Suddenly, before he knew it, more than twenty other interested people on their way for a meal at the pub next door - popped into the museum to have a look too! What a shame that we can t have our museums open at times when there are large numbers of people about. One of our next projects will be to renovate the Forces Room ahead of the World War I commemorations next year. We ll keep you posted, but thanks to a generous donation from the proceeds of the Steptoe auction, we can make a start. The memorial room will be painted and the displays spruced up. Huge and grateful thanks go to the Naseby and Surrounding Goldfields 150 th Jubilee committee for their extremely generous donation to the Maniototo Early Settlers Association. This will enable us to proceed with the refurbishment of the Settlers Museum. There is always something to be repaired, repainted or renovated to ensure the survival of such a richly historic building. We simply would not be able to survive without this local generosity and interest. Hazel has fielded many research requests this season and having digitized our photograph collection it has been quick and simple to supply people with copies of their family photographs. This has been a good source of revenue for us too. Watch for information about the Open Day at the Jubilee Museum over the Easter Weekend, when the Chandler and Price printing press in the Mt Ida Chronicle display area will be working. You may even be able to print something yourself. GROUND WORKS LIMITED CONTRIBUTE CONTENT The Positively Maniototo Editorial Team appreciates contributions from all corners of the community. 7 MANIOTOTO LIONS TURN 50 Errol Millar On Saturday 15 th March the local Lions club celebrated 50 years of service to the Maniototo. Current and past members, wives, partners, friends and invited guests initially gathered at midday at the Naseby Domain for an informal BBQ lunch and a chance to catch up on old friends. That evening the jubilee function was held at the Maniototo Stadium. Over 120 participants enjoyed an early-evening social hour, celebratory speeches and presentations, followed by a three course meal and concluded with dancing and music for the energetic. Following a welcome from current Lions President, Errol Millar, Dave McAtamney led a rousing rendition of the New Zealand National anthem in Maori and English. Mac Smith (an ex Maniototo Lion) proposed a toast to the Maniototo Club on behalf of the Oamaru Lions Club, the club that originally sponsored the creation of the Maniototo Club back in One of the club s current life members, John Hore, then presented Life Membership certificates to three newly-created life members, Dickson Andrews, Nick McKenzie and long-serving club secretary Eddie Shea. District Governor, Andy Andrews passed on special greetings from the Lions International and Lions NZ. In congratulating the club on its achievements he noted the longstanding discreet tradition of service to many individuals and families throughout the community as well as the range of very successful projects the club had initiated. A highlight of the evening was the speech by Vice President John Levido who mentioned a range of activities over the years, some quite humorous, and he drew attention to the detailed display boards covering a range of very significant and successful projects the club has initiated. John noted the service activities were not necessarily all hard work, members often enjoyed the camaraderie and some great friendships had been forged over the years. The formalities were rounded out with a traditional Lions-style raffle overseen by life member Pat O Neill. Past member and past president, Father Maurice White introduced dinner with an appropriate grace and the meal was followed by the cutting of the anniversary cake by life member Maurice Bissett, the longest continuous serving member from the foundation of the club. A Lions function would not be complete without the lighthearted tail twisting and Ken Gillespie, Dave McAtamney and John Mulholland extracted fines for real and imagined offences including whether every person present was wearing underwear or not! Pat Dowling expressed his sincere appreciation to all those club members who had helped with arrangements for the event and he particularly thanked the members wives who had prepared the magnificent floral displays in the stadium, the Kindergarten Ladies for the catering and the members of the Ranfurly Volunteer Fire Brigade for managing the bar and providing the courtesy van. Club President Errol Millar invited all present to show their appreciation to Patrick Dowling for his efforts as Jubilee Committee Chairman. The music and the conversations went on well into the evening. New life member Nick McKenzie and wife Carol. CAR VS WWI GUN A bizarre accident left a badly damaged car, a slightly damaged gun and a man hospitalised when the driver crashed into the World War I field gun in the Naseby War Memorial garden. The driver suffered a blackout and drove off the road passing between a large tree and power pole. His car finally stopped when the 1500kg gun was knocked backwards off its stands and was arrested by the recoil plough on the rear digging into the grass. The field gun suffered a bent footrest and some damage to its mounts. The accident was attended by medical and fire crews from Naseby and Ranfurly. The driver was airlifted to hospital soon after. Jock Scott, Pat and Maree O Neill, Tricia and John Hore and Mac Smith enjoy the evening at Maniototo Stadium. Footnote to the incident: Paul Willyams, a photographer of Christchurch, has since been in contact and has sent two copies of a book of photos he produced titled Dear Naseby, Thanks and sorry about the gun. An extract from his message reads my memory starts with coming to surrounded by caring, professional people from Naseby and Ranfurly who looked after me, my car and my belongings. Before I even knew what day was, I was in a jet helicopter being whisked to Dunedin Hospital. I m fine now. 7

9 JUNIOR CRICKET REPORT Raewyn Inder The year 5 and 6 Maniototo Junior Cricket team started their season in the Year 3 and 4 (soft ball) competition before Christmas. After the holidays, the team went up to the year 5 and 6 (hard ball) competition. Coach, Al McKnight is very pleased with how the team jelled together week in and week out and kept adding to their skills for each game. He has said for such a young team the boys really know their cricket and just keep growing as a team. Al thanked the parents for their continued support and the number of parents every Saturday who came to cheer the team on. Right down to the sisters and brothers who were happy to be dragged along too. The parents and the players thanked Al for his time, effort and encouragement with the team and look forward to his continued coaching. The team won some games and lost some games but the winner of the season was the continued encouragement that the boys themselves showed each other. Whether batting or fielding there was certainly some great shots played, acrobatic catches taken along, breathtaking run-outs and wicket-smashing bowling too. The team was always eager for the gentlemanly team handshakes at the end of every game too. A-LA-CARTE IN WAIPIATA Keep a look out for Jan Rutherford s eye catching little red food cart based at the Waipiata hall. Aptly named A la carte, Jan will be serving food and drinks to hungry Rail Trail visitors and locals during the busy season. So far her menu includes bacon butties, whitebait fritters, wraps, crepes, maid in the Maniototo ice cream", coffees and more. Good on you Jan! Pop along and check it out! Jan warms up a rather damp rail trailer from A-La-Carte in Waipiata. Some of the team watching and encouraging their team mates while batting in Cromwell in March. 9

10 NZ 7 S CHAMPS Martin Kreft and Ewan Kirk were part of the Alexandra Club bowling team which can proudly boast the title of NZ 7 s Champions. The competition is based around entering a team of 4, a pair and a single competitor. Martin has competed in the team for seven years and, although he has played bowls for years, this was Ewan s first year with the team. Taieri were set to be the favourite (with a couple of NZ representatives in the team) but when the competition was held in Palmerston North in March, it was Alexandra who came out on top. Congratulations Marty and Ewan. TAKES A TRACTOR Members of the Chamberlian 9G Tractor Club of Western Australia shipped ten tractors into New Zealand to undertake a month long tractor trek. Along the way they took the opportunity to fundraise for children with cancer in New Zealand. The South Island tour included Christchurch, West Coast, Molesworth and Bluff. They headed to Roxburgh and came over via Lake Onslow into the Maniototo. They camped up at the Ranfurly Holiday Park (pictured) and enjoyed visits and donations from the locals. Jodie McSkimming will be visiting Ranfurly on Wednesdays April 9th and 23rd FROM THE LIP Jamie McKay I was never much of a literary scholar but I do remember once being forced, for School Cert English, to read a book by George Orwell entitled It was a futuristic political science fiction novel written in 1949 about how life might be in the future with Big Brother watching over your shoulder. A couple of weeks ago on a southern sojourn to my old home town in Southland, I had a farming Orwellian epiphany. As I was driving around the old home patch, it struck me how much the rural landscape of New Zealand has changed in past 30 years. Let me count the ways: 1/ The price of farms. In 1984 I bought a 160 hectare sheep farm for the princely sum of $365,000 on the eve of an under-theweather Rob Muldoon calling the infamous Schnaaps election. Within two years subsidies were gone from farming and almost overnight my farm had a valuation of $224,000. A bit of a problem when the mortgage was $240,000! I lived to tell the tale. Many good young farmers did not. Thirty days ago a 1245 hectare dairy farm in Mid Canterbury sold for $64.5 million. By reckoning that s nearly $52,000 per hectare. Compare that to the $2,280 per hectare price tag of my first farm purchase. That s a 2300% increase in the price of land over the past 30 years, albeit comparing sheep apples with dairy oranges. Back in 1984, the then Lange government declared farming to be a sunset industry. Rogernomics rendered farm land next to worthless. How ironic that in the ensuing 30 years, there has not been a better investment! 2/ Farm types. Back in my day, certainly in Southland, sheep and beef farms dominated the landscape. There were a few cropping farms, some early pioneers were getting into deer farming and there were a few dairy farms, many doing town supply. Basically, in the past 30 years, the number of sheep has more than halved and the number of dairy cattle has more than doubled. And unfortunately that trend looks set to continue. 3/ Farmers. In the good old days farmers were the back bone of the All Black forward pack. Andrew Hore was the last real farmer in the All Blacks, although the likes of Tony Woodcock, Sam Whitelock and and Sam Cane can claim links. Now we hear farmers are getting fat as mechanisation means more sitting and less doing. Gone, it seems, are the hard men of the land. A far cry from the great forward pack of 1967, which included farmers the likes of Brian Lochore, Colin Meads, Ken Gray, Sam Strahan and Ian Kirkpatrick. Not to mention the likes of Kel Tremain, Jack Hazlett and Bruce McLeod who were involved in farm-related servicing industries. 4/ Export Markets. If we hark back again to 1967, nearly everything went to Britain. Then along came the Common Market and all of sudden we had competition in Europe. By 1984 we were flirting with the Middle East as live trade became an option. Thirty years later, we have become an offshore farm for China. 5/ Farm vehicles. I cut my teeth learning to drive an old Series I Landrover. It was an eight-speed (of sorts), having four forward gears in low ratio and four in high ratio. I reckon it had a top speed on the open road of about 70km/hour with a tail wind. And it whined like Russel Norman at a day out on a dairy farm. Yes, farming has certainly changed. If I'd set out thirty years ago to write a rural novel titled 2014, I doubt whether I could've envisaged the changed landscaped. Farmers might be fatter, but their industry's in far greater health than in

11 EDEN HORE ITEMS ON DISPLAY ANZAC DAY The Wool Away exhibition - A History of Sheep and Stations in Central Otago will be running at Central Stories until the 4th of May. Featuring are four pieces from the Eden Hore Collection which was bought by the Central Otago District Council for $40,000 in August last year. The ANZAC day service on the 25th of April will be held at Kyeburn. At 10am there will be the wreath laying service at the Kyeburn Cemetery followed by the family service in the Kyeburn Hall. The dawn service will be at 6.30am in Ranfurly. The exhibition showcases the sheep and wool industry of Central Otago, past and present, and aims to highlight Central Otago as pioneers of the sheep industry in New Zealand. Further inquiries to: Chris Parkes or Colin Smith Eden Hore was a high country farmer in Naseby who was fascinated in the transformation of the raw product such as wool, produced on the land, to these beautiful fabrics and garments. This collection was born from Eden's fascination and is a great example of how one Central Otago High country station man's interest helped to pioneer the fashion industry for New Zealand. The garments being displayed are some of the first pieces that Eden collected. They are all made from wool that has been hand spun. The designers are all New Zealand designers; Beverley Horne, June Mercer and Pauline Kingston. The future of the full collection is still in the planning process. 12 Jane Falconer presents her CLACHANBURN COMMENT We are having some lovely sunny autumn days to enjoy the end of the flowering season and harvest our produce for the months ahead. Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Ellerslie Flower show in Christchurch, and what a good year to go we thoroughly enjoyed seeing the garden of Sally Brown from the Blueskin Nurseries at Waitati. She picked up several awards and I feel had it over many designers, who like herself are Landscape architects, but as well she has a lifetime of plant knowledge and practical experience, and she is virtually at our backdoor well done Sally. Part of Sally s display at the Ellerslie Flower Show. Sally received a silver award for her decorative garden collection. Talking of young gardeners I was recently asked to help a local couple who have moved into a relatively large country garden which was once a beautiful garden, but over many years of neglect now needs a certain amount of remedial work. Originally it had been very well planned and planted with good trees and shrubs and well - shaped lawns, and I was pleased to see that the task ahead is not impossible. Some of the trees need pruning and removing dead branches, many of the shrubs and all of the old fashioned roses require re shaping, pruning to lift up the growth from the ground for easy maintenance. A good weed killing and compost will quickly give the garden a good tidy appearance. There are quite a few low growing conifers which have survived very well and look good and require no work at all, and are worthy of consideration. They have got the vegetable garden well worked up and manure added, and have built a hen house. In spring a few new shrubs to fill in gaps will complete the project. Good luck. Jobs to be done now include: Beginning to cut back perennials as they finish flowering, divide and move if you want to and mulch. Plant bulbs now, for spring flowers. Lightly pruning evergreen shrubs now will keep them in good shape until spring when some may require another tidy up. Tidy up the vegetable garden. Fertilising lawns in autumn is common place and advice from your nursery man as to type and application could be useful. Start watering less to begin to harden off growth, but don t let plants die! The more work done now the easier it will be in the spring. Happy gardening Jane 12 The Otago Motorcycle Club invite all motorcyclists to THE 2014 BRASS MONKEY RALLY Saturday 31 st May - Sunday 1st June (Queen s Birthday Weekend) Idaburn Dam, Oturehua, Central Otago Come to Central Otago, a World of Difference and join us at the Brass Monkey Rally. This is one of New Zealand s best known and longest running Motorcycle Rallies where motorcyclists gather annually at Oturehua to celebrate motorcycling in one of New Zealand s coldest places to enjoy a large bonfire, live band, various events and displays which makes this rally memorable. While it is good for the organisation of the rally to have an idea of numbers via pre-paid entries, most of the rally attendees make the decision on the day more so the locals. We will be using the pre-entry on-line entry method which we successfully trialled last year this assists in speeding up entry onto the site. PRE ENTER AND BE ELIGIBLE FOR A $300 PREZZY CARD DRAW Free soup and apples are provided to Ralliests. The rally is organised by the Otago Motorcycle Club with the Oturehua Winter Sports club people, who provide the food for the rally and assist with organising the event. Easter Muffins (Page 112) 2C Flour 1 ½ t Baking Soda 1 C Caster Sugar 2 t Mixed Spice 1 t Cinnamon Zest of 1 orange ¾ C Sultanas 2 T (heaped) Golden Syrup 100g Butter 2 Eggs 1 C Milk Preheat oven to 200 C Gently heat the golden syrup and butter together until the butter has just melted. Cool slightly and add eggs and milk. Beat together to mix. Add the liquids to the dry ingredients and lightly mix do not over mix. Spoon into greased muffin tins. Bake for about minutes, or until the centers spring back when pressed. *For a kiddy friendly Easter muffin option, make plain chocolate muffins, and press an unwrapped Caramello egg into the centre before baking. Coffee match: Café L affare Primo plunger grind. LOOKING BACK Jim Sullivan Maniototo has always had poets. These days Ross McMillan (Blue Jeans) and Brian Turner at Oturehua are probably the best known. In the old days it was David McKee Wright, Irish-born, and for several years a rabbiter on Puketoi and other stations. His Maniototo experiences produced some of his best poems, many of which appear in the book Station Ballads and other Verses which Crockery Bob McSkimming helped him publish in Wright s poem about The Hawker s Cart immortalises Bob McSkimming and should be known by every local school child. His The Man Who Saved the March tells the story of a cricketing parson at Patearoa. Last year John Gibson of Patearoa produced a collection of McKee Wright poems as a community fundraiser and he is working on a display to commemorate Wright at the Patearoa Hall. Come one, Come all! David McKee Wright, Maniototo poet of the 1890s. This picture (and the hair style) comes from his later times as a minister and journalist. (Alexander Turnbull Library) Maniototo Early Settlers Museum Easter Sunday 20 th April 11am to 4pm Come and see our very own print machine in action at The Mount Ida Chronicle Office. A fine print display of how it used to be done pre typewriters! Find the answers to our quiz or find YOUR name in a WANTED poster!
