1 FREE Phone Amie on (027) or Download on line from APRIL 2014 Following the ceremony, the crowds headed to Kyeburn Hall for the formal service and morning tea. Raylene Rawcliffe, as main speaker, shared information written down by her husband s grandfather George Rawcliffe, who came from Kokonga. The presentation included an excellent collection of audio and visual content. Raylene would like to thank Ewan Mason and Raewyn Inder for their assistance. ANZAC DAY Remembering and honouring the fallen generated a commendable turnout by Maniototo locals, friends and families. Approximately 200 people gathered at the dawn service at Ranfurly which included a stirring display of white crosses and a base lit banner. The crosses are owned by the Maniototo Return Servicemen Assocation and represent all the Maniototo people who have lost their lives during both World Wars and in Korea. On looking back, he wonders How the boys could sleep, and snore; Their bed was just an oilsheet Spread on a concrete floor. He can hear again the roar of guns, The bullets ripping past, The rattle of machine guns, and the whiz-bang`s screeching blast. Perhaps he sees a lonely grave, Where a pal was left behind, Marked with a simple wooden cross Like thousands of its kind. Taken from a poem by George Rawcliffe kindly provided by Raylene. The centenary of the landing at Gallipoli will take place in The dawn and family services will both be held in Ranfurly. The Maniototo RSA will gather together later in the year to plan additional events to mark the centenary. The rain held back for the wreath laying ceremony at Kyeburn Cemetery. Another 200 members of the community remembered and acknowledged those who gave their lives for their countries and for the Maniototo. RSA President Colin Smith said, It s just great to see such a great turnout, of all ages. The weather was kind too. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the day It seems too that the Poppy Day was very successful and I d like to thank the Maniototo public for your kind donation. Maniototo St John Youth (left) marched proudly. Wreaths were laid and Russell Atkinson played The Last Post. Hunter Stevenson - All insurance with assurance (see full ad page 11)

LOOKING FOR INFORMATION I am trying to locate Rory O Malley who was a great friend of my brother s Tony Hannah (now deceased). They were at Lincoln together and remained lifelong friends (Rory in Wellington/Sydney and Tony in London). I live in Montreal, Canada, but was living in NZ ( ) and about 2010 Rory passed through Timaru (my hometown) and left a message on the back door that he had left Sydney and was going to live in Dunedin and would get in touch with me soon. I didn t hear from him before I left in April 2011 and my efforts to locate him in Dunedin have not been successful. He didn t have my address in Canada. I know Rory came from the Maniototo and still had family there last time I heard. Would it be possible for you to contact one of his relatives and ask them to contact me with his present address? Or contact him and give him my address and tell him to contact me? Thank you, in advance for any help you can give me in this matter. Sincerely, Felicity Glover (nee Hannah) flixwlln@total.net We welcome Letters to the Editor but ask that they are kept brief due to space constraints. 4 COMMUNITY CORNER Members of the Waipiata Community Development committee met to cover a variety of topics such as selling kowhai trees as a fundraiser, protection of the war memorial and the future of community historical documents. It was decided to hold a community potluck tea on Sunday 1st June starting at 5pm. The committee encourage as many along as possible as this is a great opportunity to meet old and news members of the community. It will be held at the Waipiata Hall supper room. There will also be a meeting to look at establishing a table tennis club at the Waipiata Hall on Monday 9th June at 7.30pm. Enquiries to Murray on On Easter Sunday afternoon over forty people attended the annual meeting of Patearoa residents and ratepayers association. It commenced with a practical demonstration of an Automated External Defribillator by Duncan Helm from St John Ambulance, a demonstration of some of the community s basic fire fighting equipment along with details of where it is all stored and then a presentation from the local swimming pool committee chair, Joanne Paterson on pool safety processes. The group then held their formal AGM followed by a social get together. This month is also the Big Day Out Farmers/Allied Trades Annual Golf Day at Patearoa Golf Club. So, put aside Wednesday 21st May - 12 noon start. It s an individual stableford and there will be great prizes, great fun, great hospitality and a great feed at the end of the day. Only $25 per person, no entries required just turn up and enter on the day. BRASS MONKEY The annual Brass Monkey Rally will again be held on Queen s Birthday Weekend (Saturday 31st May) and event organisers are encouraging the public to head along and join in this iconic gathering. This is an event which aims to give back directly to the Maniototo community. To come into the rally all you need to do is pay a small bond at the entry which is 100% refunded upon exit if you leave before the band and entertainment begins. Should you wish to stay on easy you ve already pre-paid. Speaking of easy - the live entertainment is The Easy Hearts from Christchurch and they ve given the crowds a great time in previous years. There are also prizes given out for things such as longest travelled, nicest bike and the hard luck prize. MUFFIN COMPETITION The Garden Club held a muffin competition as part of their produce night. Josie Dick made the Easter Muffins featured in our April edition and won second prize. To make them even more authentic, she added little pastry crosses. 6 ADVERTORIAL REBRANDING You may have noticed recently that the team at Central Vets are wearing different uniform, our utes have a new logo on them and in the not too distant future you will see new signage at the gate. We are currently in the process of rebranding!! Veterinary Enterprises (VetEnt for short) are the largest veterinary practice in New Zealand with 26 clinics nationwide 6 of which are based in Otago. With approximately 80 veterinarians nationwide we really are our catch-phrase Local Vets Nationwide Support! The Ranfurly team have a wealth of local knowledge, couple this with high levels of product knowledge and you have the best advice and best product for any situation that may arise on your property! VetEnt also have an extremely rigorous product scrutiny process (performed by some of the most highly regarded Veterinarians in the country) so you can be assured that we will only sell you product that stands up to its claims and that we are prepared to back 100%. INFORMATION EVENING Earlier in March we held a Farmer Information Evening which was very well supported with approximately 50 farmers attending. We had Joe Bennett from our clinic in Wairoa (our Sheep and Beef team leader), give the introduction and talk about drench practices and resistance management. Phoebe Ellis from our Alexandra clinic presented a case report about lamb iodine deficiency and the effects of supplementation. Our local veterinarian Liz Paton discussed abortion vaccines and made a case that all sheep farmers should be vaccinating their first lambers. All farmers received a bound booklet of the presentations. A number of farmers who couldn t come to the evening have since come into the clinic and gone through the talks with one of our Vets. Anyone else who would like to do this is welcome, or we can send a booklet out to you. COMMUNITY CONTENT Feel free to give Amie a call or send an to info@maniototo.co.nz if you have any story ideas, events to add, pictures to offer. Be our eyes and ears. Another great year is ticking by at Maniototo Kindergarten and we have been enjoying the sunny days, getting involved with lots of water in the sandpit, lots of active movement, and morning tea picnics on the deck. The cooler weather of Autumn has still given us some good days so we can still enjoy these activities. We look forward to what term 2 brings. You may have seen us out and about on our walks in the community wearing our fluro safety vests. There are lots of interesting sights and happenings to investigate and we meet friendly folk along the way. If you see us give us a wave or come and have a chat. The children have been particularly enjoying all the big trucks that pass the kindergarten each day. They love when someone gives us a toot so if you are a truck driver do remember to toot or wave as you pass it will gladden the heart of many a child. We also appreciate contributions to our programme from locals for our music interest Joyce Greer showed us how she plays the bagpipes. Thanks Joyce. Our A.G.M. was an opportunity for us to acknowledge once again the wonderful work our committee does to support our kindergarten. We also acknowledged the support of the wider community without you, we would not exist. We welcome visitors so if you would like to call in and see what happens here we would be happy to meet you. We are working on our enrolments for next term and it looks as though there will be one or two spaces. Do get in contact if you would like a space or would like to go on the waiting list for later in the term or the year. 8 CELEBRATING RURAL RADIO The Radio Network s The Farming Show recently celebrated 20 years in business. Jamie MacKay and Amie Pont write of this milestone Jamie: In the cut-throat world of the media in which we operate, I guess that makes me somewhat of a veteran. On April 11, 1994, on day one in the life of a fledgling radio station called Hokonui Gold, Lee Piper and I launched a rural feature we originally called "Farming Today". It was a five minute midday interview with an assortment of farm consultants, monitor farmers, an accountant, a veterinarian, a fertiliser rep, a financial commentator and a wool buyer. Jamie MacKay and Lee Piper It was a show born of truly humble beginnings. Such was the stronghold National Radio had over the rural radio market back in the day, we knew there was no point in going head-to-head with a nationwide juggernaut. Besides, every cocky I knew tuned to the National programme at 12.35pm to listen to the five day weather forecast. Remember, those were the days when websites and smart phones were a fanciful future glint in the eye of Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Farmers were entrenched to listening to the time slot to plan their farming week. So what started life as a five minute daily interview after the midday news, morphed, more by accident than design, into a 10, then 15, then 20 minute feature. Then one day when I'd accidentally rambled past the deadline we discovered the world hadn't ended and we still had some listeners sticking with us! I am a firm believer that fate and luck play a huge role in your life. And it was about this time that Hokonui Gold and its flagship Farming Show got lucky. National Radio, for reasons best known to itself, decided to reduce its previously excellent coverage of rural issues on the Don Carson-hosted Midday and Rural Report, leaving the door ajar for an interloper. One of my mantras in business and life is you don't have to be the best, but it sure helps if you're first. As broadcasters go, I'm pretty average. It doesn't help that I was unlucky to be born with a bit of a stutter and struggle to enunciate the word "rural". But where I got lucky was realizing there was a real gap in the market for a rural radio show and getting it to air nationwide before someone smarter, younger and cheaper thought of it! Over the years I've been privileged to speak to, and interview, many people in places way above my station. That opportunity would probably not have arisen had I stuck with farming or the abject drudgery of two miserable years of house husbandry. Since the year 2000, I ve had a weekly interview with the Prime Minister of the day. There have only been two and I think history will judge both Helen Clark and John Key kindly. Likewise for the Ministers of Agriculture and Primary Industries; John Luxton, Jim Sutton, David Carter and Nathan Guy are fine men. Jim Anderton was a good bloke but a strange choice. Damien O'Connor will do a good job, given the chance. I think back on some of the Federated Farmers leaders I've dealt with since Malcolm Bailey, Alistair Polson, Tom Lambie, Charlie Pedersen, Don Nicolson and Bruce Wills are presidents who immediately spring to mind; Bailey the consummate academic, Polson the passionate farmer, Lambie and Wills the absolute gentlemen, Pedersen a feisty watchdog for farmers and, my favourite, Nicolson, a rabid rightwinger with a sense of humour. Then there's the Feds chief executives; Tony St Clair, a champion despite hailing from the wrong side of the ditch and Conor English, always good for a beer and bit of a yarn at the proliferation of farming conferences and gatherings we attended over the years. I'm proud the Farming Show has survived to blow out 20 candles. In 20 years time someone will look back and think a farming show, in whatever form it takes in an everchanging media landscape, was a bit of a no-brainer for a country where agriculture is the biggest act in town. And in 20 years time I ll be well out to pasture, hopefully still on the right side of the grass! I'd like to think by then I might have written a book about, or at least chronicled, a 20 year battle to get a rural radio programme taken seriously and accepted on mainstream commercial radio in this country. If the Farming Show has achieved nothing else, it has at least achieved that. 9 Amie: Maniototo has a long history with Jamie McKay and Lee Piper and their Farming Show concept. Three years before The Farming Show began in 1994, a local radio station in Ranfurly had started up. In around 1997 then Manager, Jo Grayling envisaged a program about Central Otago and the day-to-day issues with rural living. Using farming related magazines, hot topics of discussion, interviews and local opinions, Focus On Farming began on a Friday. Included were sessions on ACC, banking, local topics such as a worm farm in the Styx, pest control and up and coming entrepreneurs within the rural sector. In an attempt to fill a full hour Trevor Davis took over the show and would tape (yes, using cassettes) appropriate interviews from The Farming Show and replay them to the Maniototo (courtesy of Hokonui Gold). The Farming Show team then headed to Burn radio station for a more informal line up of interviews, giveaways and a relaxed hour on air (a spot of golf was thrown in there somewhere too). A huge thanks and congratulations go to Jamie and Lee for having vision to produce and promote rural radio. An even bigger thank you for their loyal and ongoing support of local radio in the Maniototo. They have mentored any way they can and have provided the station a platform for providing great rural coverage at local and national level. After a re-brand to Burn 729am, an agreement between myself (as then Station Manager), Jamie and Lee led to a live feed of the popular show which now broadcasts daily between 12noon and 1pm. Jamie and Lee have continued to support Burn in not only providing The Farming Show but also the hourly news, referral advertising and even bringing The Farming Show to Ranfurly to celebrate the stations 20th anniversary in The show aired from CRT/Farmlands and Jamie conducted interviews with local farmers including Simon Paterson, Sean Becker (below) and Stu Duncan and Poet Laureate Brian Turner. MIGHTY MAGGOTS An Austrian band recently posted onto the Maniototo Rugby Club Facebook page. Seems they are a skapunk band named the Mighty Maggots. What are the chances! A little google by the Editor and we can tell you that Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the precursor to rock steady and reggae. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. Vaughan Dowling with his boys - Harry (left) and Tom Punk is that fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics! Phone Jackie Blue or Liz O'Neill EASTER PRINTING DISPLAY Raewyn Inder On Easter Sunday the Maniototo Early Settlers Association and I ran a demonstration of the printing press displayed in the Chronicle Print Office, at the Jubilee Museum in Naseby. The Maniototo Early Settlers Association asked if I could run an open day to show the public how the display works. To have a full workshop is something the Association are very proud of, but for it to be an operational display is just incredible! The news spread quickly in the print industry about our functional printing display and since January we have had contact and support throughout the whole country. The head Librarian at Otago University s Special Collections Area loaned me a hand press for the weekend too. This made inserting names in to our WANTED posters quicker for the crowd coming through. The display ran from 11am to 4pm with information set up about the Mount Ida Chronicle newspaper and its history in the area along with a brief look at the invention of movable type, over 400 years ago, and this exact style of print the press does today. There was a good crowd that came through and watched the demonstrations of the printing press in action. Most were amazed at the smooth, quiet action of this type of chunky metal machine that was built in While others were excited to be standing in the exact spot of the original Chronicle Office site built 150 years ago, watching the old machine actually printing. The demonstration was a great success and the feedback from the visitors was very positive.. We hope we can keep doing printing displays and demonstrations in the future. WANTED! 12 Jane Falconer presents her CLACHANBURN COMMENT CRICKET AWARDS What a lovely Easter Sunday, the weather has been beautiful and I have had all the grand children here in the garden for an Easter egg hunt. We spread the eggs out far and wide, and what fun to see them enjoying running around the garden having so much fun, and their parents too. The Otago Cricket Awards 2013/14, which occur once a year for all Rep cricket teams and the Volts and Sparks Otago Cricket teams, were held in April. Caitlin Blakely of Waipiata was awarded the under 21 girls Batter of the Year and rising star for Otago Sparks. As well as making jottings during the month, I wander around the garden making notes before I put pen to paper for the readers, and today was no exception. In warm sun and blue sky the lovely autumn colours, and the variation of different shades of colour in trees and shrubs was beautiful, but the berries and fruits need mention too. The red berries of Pyracantha brilliant, planted in front of Poplar trees are especially spectacular, but how I dislike pruning them! they are very thorny, but make up for that now. The yellow berried variety P. shawnee does not flower as profusely for me, it is in part shade and that might be why. Caitlin also recently received the Stirling Sports award for Otago Sports Person of the Month. The accolade is given out to an individual and also a sports team of the month which the Sparks Women's Cricket team also received. Caitlin says It s been a busy season and I am honoured to have been recognised. Now cricket is finished for the season but winter training will start soon possibly twice a week through to next season. The hard work is worth it though. Viburnum trilobum is covered in bunches of red fruit, not dissimilar to red currants, they are most attractive, but will completely disappear overnight, when the birds find them. The pink berried rowan Sorbus hupehensis has berried well this year, but Sorbus aucuparia, commonly known as the Mountain ash has been very disappointing. I checked how they have berried over in Naseby this year, as they are always magnificent there, I was told the same thing, so it must be the season. Malus or crab apples as we know them are very well suited to our climate, and apart from their blossom they reward us with their apples now, some are ornamental and some suitable for jelly making. The orchard has produced good crops of apples, pears and plums, the red fleshed plum Prunus black doris produced approx. 70 kg of fruit, an amazing crop from one tree. The Hazel nuts must be collected soon and I am still waiting for my walnut tree to fruit well, I get a few when the early frosts don t damage It. It is only 10 yrs old and I remember being told they take 14 yrs to produce fruit. Nearby at Puketoi Station there is a wonderful old walnut tree over 100 yrs old and it has huge crops. Caitlin with Dad Geoff and Mum Natalie. Giving some produce away to friends and family is satisfying, and It was great fun to give Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge a posy of garden flowers from my garden. CELEBRATE MUM The Practice offers a wonderful selection of gorgeous gifts for Mum, including a new selection of merino gloves, the famous tili jars (fill with treats), scarves, chocolate, candles, candle holders and, of course, gift vouchers. Happy gardening Jane. Call or amiepont@gmail.com Like The Practice, Ranfurly on Facebook to be kept up to date with new stock arrivals and promotions. 12

13 OUT AND ABOUT Dylan Bolton-Voice finishes the Contact Epic mountain bike challenge which circumnavigates Lake Hawea. The arrival of Autumn created some great days for riding. Mum Lisa snaps Tyler Toheriri-O Neil just south of Waipiata. Warbirds Over Wanaka was the place to be for two young Maniototo ladies over Easter. Escaping after their farm flooded on Good Friday, Alivia Steele (above) caught up with Richie McCaw and her younger sister Tess (below) loved being able to play jet fighter pilot! Eric Swinbourn (below) raced in the Highlands Motor Park Festival of Speed at Easter. Martin Grundy (Maniototo 4 Square) and his daughters Courtney and Morgan as well as Tash Kane (Maniototo Sheep Handling) competed in what is called "probably the toughest event on the planet". TOUGH MUDDER been running in the US, UK and Australia for several years, this was their first NZ event. It was held at Hampton Downs Raceway in Auckland and is a 20km obstacle course through mud, originally designed for the British special forces. Well done! Jack Cormack and Laura Dowling at the Maniototo Area School Formal. They were awarded the title of Best Dressed Couple. 13

On the weekend of May about 30 volunteers spent 700 man-hours (you could use that phrase in those days) demolishing Ranfurly's old Bank of New Zealand building and raised $2,500 ($24,000 these days) for the volunteer fire brigade along the way. The bank had already moved to new premises south of the hotel and the old bank's site was needed for hotel expansion. Len Ardell, the county clerk, was also chairman of the hotel company (a joint venture between the county and New Zealand Breweries) saw to it that county truck drivers volunteered and S Hazlett and McLaren Transport chipped in as well. The building had been moved from Naseby in the 1920s and was well over a hundred years old. It survived a fire scare in The hotel was soon building the bottle store and bar additions on the site and there was a commitment to "preserve the trees on the site which will be incorporated into the parking area."
