1 Lee McGraw Editor The HOG Pen APRIL 2012 Welcome to spring! It is that time to get your bike cleaned up, oil changed, tires checked and get ready to RIDE. Our first overnight trip is set for Historic Wilmington NC. The chapter will be leaving the shop at 4 on April 13. The chapter has not been down to Wilmington in a number of years so I hope you can join the Chapter for riding, eating and fellowship! Mike Doby has been very busy with our Annual Charity Bike Raffle. Ticket sales are coming in. Remember the deadline for ticket stubs and money is at The Sandhill cycle Open House which is set for 4-28 at the Shop. Please get your money in so we can plan accordingly. If you need more tickets please call Mike Doby. At the Open House there will be food, drinks, a poker run and most likely some good deals at the Shop - see you there. The raffle is set for Friday May 4. It is always a lot of fun so come over to Union Pines High School and enjoy the show - hope you win. Remember there are only 150 tickets - not bad odds. Be sure to make your accommodations for Charleston. The motel info is in your newsletter. The ride is set for May 11. This has always been a great trip with some nice back roads into the region. Yes there will be an advanced safety class in the very near future. Details will follow when available. This will be done here in Moore County with the help of Pinehurst Police Motor Cycle Unit. Some newer folks may not know George, but he was Editor for about 10 years.. I am also well on my way to the padded room that they tell him is His special place. George is currently the HOG Historian. This is fitting for a man who was a teenager when the first Harley was produced. (don t reply!)

Camping in Daytona-2012 This could also be called Idiot opts for hard ground over using points for hotel room Trust me, I thought it was a good idea when I left Myrtle Beach on the first Friday morning of Daytona Bike week. I hit the road at 5 am...got 4 miles from Destination Daytona, and the bottom dropped out. That was fun!!! Was it a sign of the weekend? If Jim Thomas is such a great administrator, then why does he sleep on the ground? I told him I would join him at his camp site on Friday, which I did. I carried a hunting blind that I used as a tent...sort of. I also had an old sleeping bag and some tarps. Whatever...doesn't matter...i left it all there for the scavengers! Beasts I tell ya! It was old stuff and I was gonna yard sell it anyway. By the time Sunday rolled around, it was old WET stuff so Florida can keep it!...anyway, why does Jim sleep on the ground? You would have to see Jim s neat little set-up to understand. He has the perfect little pad to put under his perfect little sleeping bag that fits in his perfect little tent. Arrrg. Then he has the little travel canteen kit and the travel chair, (which he sits in to watch others...aka...me,) put together enough plastic to shield the on-slaughter of rain. What the heck? I ignored the buzzard and proceeded to masterfully weave a shelter Davey Crockett would admire. Nonetheless, I would be sleeping on the ground. Well ain t that cozy!? I love a nice evening of riding in the rain in Daytona traffic, tail puckered up tighter than Mike Doby s coin pouch, and being soaked to the bone, followed by a nice 8 hour nap with a root for a pillow! Oh yeah! Bring it on! Maybe next year a small gator will bite me in the crotch to just top off the weekend! Will we have a campfire Jim? I asked days ahead of trip. Oh yes...nothing like a fire...we will have one Well, if something around there was dry enough to burn, it wasn t on our campsite. Not only that, Jim just wanted to crawl in his perfect little tent and call it a night. I pictured myself alone and in the rain by a fire singing a one man three part harmony to rowrow-row your boat! I retreated to my tent, destined to wake up at 4 am...in the rain. We saw every nutcase on the East Coast there...and they saw us! Earl and Mike D. were down and we met up with them for a few minutes at the Speedway. During a lull, (I think the eye of the hurricane) some test rode bikes Harley had there. Jim rode two. I was scared one of the off -shoot tornados would throw me and a 25 k bike in the highway so I declined. Soon the rains came again and we had more fun under a vendor tent pretending to be interested in some hearin protection crapola he was peddling. We saw dog races and I had the opportunity to lose money there! No problem...i would have probably wasted it on something silly, like a TENT! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Continued next page >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

3 Power to the pen (Continued)... Jim thought it would be good to show me the coastal Hwy. It is very scenic I am sure. I would not know, as my glasses did not have high speed windshield wipers attached. We rode north along the coast in a sideways downpour which was coming from the north east. This was nice because, instead of being blown out into the ocean, we would simply just be shoveled over into oncoming traffic, which we all know is overrated.ok we made it through that...now, of course, Main Street Daytona was crazy. They have cops out there who flail their arms around directing traffic. Ain t no way. People were everywhere. Every now and again one of his signals would actually match up with what a biker was really doing and I guess that made him feel good. After a day of this, we rode the 25 miles back to the campground. I checked my messages...mike and Earl had a few on there telling me how dry and comfortable the Marriot was. So, why doe Jim camp? A grown man with means and thumbs and recorded good sense...why? Well, I would like to tell ya that the best thing that came out of Daytona that weekend was I-95 North...but I can t. It was fun, and yeah, I am going back to camp. (with new and cool gear mind ya,) but I am going back! Jim camps because it is fun. Lee Lexington BBQ Ride What a beautiful day for a ride!!! 26 Bikes with at least 7 riding double, including Dave and Laurie Mitchell left the shop at 10am on Saturday, March 17th heading for Mike Doby's favorite destiny, Lexington BBQ for lunch. After lunch several needed to head back but most of us rode through the country covering about 175 miles. Thanks to the ride captains for making the ride smooth and safe: Andy Summers, Roger Campbell, Stanley K, and Danny K. The owner of Lexington BBQ is always thankful to see us and invites us to come anytime. We told him how much we appreciate how good both his food and service is for such a large group, we were in and out within an hour and there were plenty of other folks there enjoying the food. We will certainly keep this ride on the Harley calendar. SAFETY TRAINING! The date of our Safety Training Event will be July 6&7, Officer Thomas Carpenter of the Pinehurst Police Dept. will conduct our training. Our classroom session is planned at the Pinehurst Police Dept. Friday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm will feature a Safety video, Group riding techniques and question and answer participation. The Field Discipline will be conducted at Union Pines High School, on Saturday July 7, 2012 from 8:00 am to approx. 12:00 noon. We hope many of our HOG members will take advantage of this opportunity. Sign up with John at the shop ASAP. The total number of Participants are 15, so don t wait, sign up now. 4 The Viet Nam Vet Ride on March 31st was a wet one but these people (and Mark Gredel...possibly your new Photo-Guru, who took this one, made the trek to honor the Viet Nam Vets in Charlotte. Jamie and Audrey Watson are in the front. King George Griffin, Jeff Eggers and Eric Pittard are behind. Thanks for representing us! 9 members of Sandhill HOG decided to skip the great lunch at Silk Hope and instead headed for Charlotte Motor Speedway for the salute to Viet Nam Vets on March 31. What a day! Forget the rain that was pounding us as we pulled out. The coffee at Judy's Restaurant in Albemarle got us back on track and by the time we headed out again for the final leg, the weather was clearing and leader Eric kept pointing skyward - either praying because I was right behind him or pointing out blue patches of sky. We were directed to the infield upon arrival and that's where acres and acres of displays awaited us. Viet Nam era helicopters, artillery, The Moving Wall (80% replica of the Wall in Washington), and much more. Tons of agencies and groups that help vets and thousands of Viet Nam veterans walking around with pride pasted all over their faces. The highlight for me was hearing the snatches of conversations between vets about their experiences. Years have perhaps dulled the bad parts and emphasized the friendship parts. That's a good thing. We had the Golden Knights (twice), the missing man formation flyover (lots of knots in throats when that happened), the 82nd Airborne Chorus, the Marine Corps band, and much, much more. Charlie Daniels wrapped it up and his new song "Let 'em win or let 'em come home" left zero dry eyes in the place. The only way to top that was to send us home with "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." I'm writing this the next morning and I will bet the strings on that fiddle are still sizzling. It was an all-around a great day - honoring people that didn't get a good homecoming when they should have. Thank you Viet-Nam Vets, and all others who have put themselves in harm s way for the rest of us. Semper Fi! By George! People!!! This ride is still open!!! The Good Times Café Ride had to be cancelled due to cold and rain. Bobby Teague reported that the rain was extremely wet and felt that was reason enough to cancel. He is our Chaplin, so we have to assume he is close enough to the producer of precipitation to understand the situation. However, this editor feels that if he was really close, the sun would have been shining! I reckon we all take what is given. Another day, another ride. OPEN HOUSE-APRIL 28th Deals and Discounts on this day! There will be good food provided by Jimmy, free at that! Come on out and get a good deal or two, have some fun and fellowship, and eat a bean.
