3 From Our President Memorial Day. Veterans Day. Are these simply just two more holidays? This Memorial Day we're going to enjoy spending the day with our families and loved ones, our friends, possibly neighbors, as well as our pets. Some of us will barbecue, participate in some form of sports, play on the lake, visit the zoo, drive our corvettes in a Memorial Day parade, and just have some good old fashioned fun. But we can't forget the real purpose of the day. Memorial Day! On this day we don't honor just those who have served in the military. We honor those who have have given their lives such that we can enjoy the freedom to enjoy this holiday. Some may have given their lives while attempting to defend their brother and sister soldiers who have and are fighting at this moment to defend that which is near and dear to us. Our freedom. For without our freedom we would not be able to enjoy this holiday. A holiday whose purpose is to let us remember and Honor those who have lost their lives on our behalf. If you have not already, get out your American flag. Hang it not only to show pride and respect, but with the purpose of showing others that you do remember the real purpose of Memorial Day. 5 An Article by Deanna Talcott I was approached a few months ago to co-write a short script for the Lansing Film Festival. Four women, all on the downside of sixty, decided to take the plunge of writing, producing and filming a short. We promptly called ourselves Senior Concepts and started brainstorming. We wanted something trendy but age appropriate, fun, with a message, but not artsy. We settled on an idea about a scam artist. But our swindler needed something significant to set his sights on. Money, property, jewelry? It needed to be visual, portable and easy to photograph. What about a car? Specifically a sports car. Our producer slyly added, And I know just where we can get one. All eyes turned expectantly toward me. A dozen thoughts of a thousand Corvette owners hammered my brain. What if it rains? Or worse, snows? It s March, for Heaven s sake! What if we have to film on a gravel road? Would I have to let someone else drive my car? The car I waited for all my life. A rational answer finally made its way to the surface. Well, we haven t put the insurance back on it yet. I was met with a wall of disappointment. I capitulated. Let me ask Bob, and we ll see what we can do. Thus, my 93 Ruby Red 40 th Anniversary Corvette became the vehicle of our production. We had a sunny crisp spring day for filming. Our novice actress assured us she d driven a stick shift. The filming would take place in a quiet residential area of a small town which calmed my nerves. We were on target for a successful day. Then we discovered the nuances of filming with a Corvette. In the first scene, our actress carried a purse, a tote, and wore boots that were killing her. She simply had to open the door and get in. That door became an obstacle to be conquered. By the third take we switched arms for the carry-ons and figured out how to make the driver s door swing like it had been slathered in graphite on steroids. Best, our actress found a way to gracefully sink into the depths of the Corvette before shutting the door. Getting her out again for subsequent shots wasn t as easy. We encouraged her flailing, wailing attempts with stop, drop, and roll! She had forgotten that a Vette hugs the road and most often just tumbled out of the interior. We also had a cell phone scene to shoot inside the Corvette. Traditionally, a film crew will remove a section of the car so the cameras can be up close and personal. Well, that was a not-over-my-dead-body decision. Instead, our right handed actress instinctively made the call as she did in real life and blotted out her entire face. It was a simple fix to switch hands and swivel in the seat. Yet it took a couple of takes to figure it out. Likewise with shooting around the side mirrors or working with reflections off the windows. As it turned out, the Corvette was a bit more daunting than our actress expected and she was reluctant to drive it. So the final shot of the car was anchored by my husband. He took on the role of the faceless stunt driver who drives off into the sunset, taking that car right where it needed to go: down the road. As it turned out there were over 44 entries in the film competition and we learned we were up against film students and professional production companies. We had two weeks to write, film and edit our contribution. Still, our first amateur attempt landed us in the top half of the entries and our short was shown on the big screen during the film festival. If you never get weary of looking at Corvettes you can find my 93 Ruby Red on Youtube in a short titled Sweetheart Swindler. Here s the link: June 2016

6 An Article by Bob Pyle Dirty Dozen Bowled Over by Magnificent Seven The annual bowling challenge between the CCCC and the Jackson CC took place at the City Limits in Mason on Sunday May 1 st. The challenge was a great success, with Bob and Shalimar Maynard providing mouth watering appetizers for all in attendance. The CCCC was represented by Rich Bratschi,, Angela Hyde, Craig & Janet Iansiti, Diane Mosher, Suzanne Politza, Dave Pursel, Bob Pyle, Simon Reiffer, Sally & Jerry Wardell and Tom Wieczorek. The CCCC had additional members who cheered on its bowlers. The Jackson CC defeated the CCCC by an average score for three games of 321 to 304 for the CCCC. Jackson had seven bowlers. All bowlers received a candy bar from Chris for every strike they bowled. The dentist award went to Rich with 8 strikes. Tom had 6: Craig 5: Bob & Jerry 4; Diane, Suzie & Dave 3, Angie 2; and Janet 1. Doubles were made by Tom, Rich (twice), Bob, Dave, and Suzie. Rich was robbed in game three. He was dead on for a strike in frame nine when the sweeper came down and sabotaged his efforts for a Turkey. Rich was high scorer for the CCCC with games of 125, 160, and 153. He was heard to say he is another Don Carter in the making. As in the words of Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle in October 1988, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you re no Jack Kennedy. After hearing Rich s comments, Rich was told, I saw Don Carter bowl when I was young and you are no Don Carter. The most athletic bowler was Janet who twice threw two balls at once. Each time one was a gutter ball. Suzie was ecstatic because she doubled her score from the last time she bowled against Jackson CC. Sally received the best effort award for finishing in the basement. Following the match everyone adjourned to the restaurant where they savored an excellent meal. Gloria s birthday was on May 1 st and she was presented with a birthday cake shared by all. Gloria is 39+. The Jackson club also had a birthday girl who also received a cake. June 2016
