President s Message by Tracy Wyhlidko, City of Redding: Our local section has a budget deadline to CWEA at the end of April. Our dedicated secretary/treasurer, April Overfield, has worked hard to comply with CWEA s extensive financial reporting and budgeting rules. I am pleased to report that our section has a balanced budget, with money in reserve. We have also been working to coordinate with the Sacramento Area Section to attend a Sacramento Rivercats Minor League Baseball game this summer. We just got word that the game will be on Saturday night, July 14 th, Please mark your calendars for this date. You are welcome and encouraged to make this a family event. Last year I had relatives from 2 years old to 80+ come along. We will get price and ticket information out as soon as possible. If you enjoy watching live baseball games, please plan on attending this event! We are also already starting to think about our endof-the-year awards. I am trying to put together a committee of people who will assist with the awards process. My goal is more nominations, more winners, and more agencies to be engaged in the awards process. 3 Oroville Training Meeting Review from March 2012 Tracy Wyhlidko Our local section strives to make each and every training meeting unique and interesting for our members. With this in mind, April Overfield arranged to hold our entire training day at the Bolt s Antique Tool Museum in Oroville. If you missed it, I would personally encourage you to not only visit the Tool Museum, but make sure to sit in on the presentation about the Evolution of Tools. We learned about how humans progressed from the stone-age tools to the modern standardized socket wrench and beyond. Well researched and sprinkled with humor, this is a presentation worth experiencing. The morning began with the much appreciated coffee, and donuts and launched into a discussion about food borne illness and bacterial diseases. Sounds like a typical day working in the wastewater industry, right? Ms. Sharon Abbott, retired Supervisor in the California Dept. of Public Health s Microbial Diseases Laboratory (and April Overfield s sister), explained the differences between viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi in a way that was both informative and relevant to the work we do every day. One take-home message is to wash your hands with soap and running water to get these germs off of your hands before you eat, drink, smoke, or rub your eyes. Hand sanitizer might kill most of the germs, but they are still stuck on your hands. Mr. Pete Galati from Xylem (the newly named water division of ITT/ Flygt) discussed how to maintain mid-range pumps. There are new nonclog impeller pumps that can deal effectively with raggy material (baby wipes, etc.) that tend to cause problems with traditional impellers. Service schedules and maintenance on the new styles has changed to a longer interval (saving time and money). There are a lot of features on these pumps that are far beyond my vocabulary. Ms. Elizabeth Westlund from Guard Products discussed Struvite. She passed around samples of Struvite, which is a dense rock-like mineral material formed from Magnesium Ammonium Phosphate. It can form in sewer lines and in digesters, centrifuges, and belt presses at wastewater treatment plants. The mineral is unusual because it forms in areas of turbulent wastewater flows. Guard Products has developed a patented organic acid and organo-amine blend of compounds which attack and dissolve the struvite build up. Guard Products also developed other products that assist with Hydrogen Sulfide and Acid Gas odor elimination. Mr. Bud Bolt (his real name), Founder of Bolt s Antique Tool Museum, was a pleasure to listen to. The museum is one-of-a-kind in the United States. Tools were obviously his destiny with the last name Bolt and his early work as a Snap-On tool dealer. The information and exhibits contained in the museum are fascinating. Like I said before, it would be well worth your time to visit the Bolt s Antique Tool Museum. A selection of old wrenches. If you have a strange old tool and you don t know what it is, Bud can tell you all about it. In the old days tools were made by the local blacksmith like to one above a combination wrench and file. Bolt s Antique Tool Museum can be found at 1650 Broderick Street in Oroville, California. Bud Bolt explaining how the industrial age and the railroad created a huge need for new tools and how the Monkey Wrench (in hand) played a big roll in the modern tools we use today.
