Be sure to read and view photos in this newsletter to see some of our summer programs and new projects. It is so true that reading is an adventure and takes us to great places! Much of our time in the READ program is used motivating children to want to read and helping to develop positive self confidence and self esteem in children. Having a positive attitude and self esteem is such an important part of a child's learning ability and the foundation of their academic and personal success. Research indicates that children who feel good about themselves will have more friends, see problems as opportunities, have better health, get more done and experience more success. Building a positive attitude takes time and commitment. As a parent, grandparent, friend or volunteer mentor, one of the best ways to foster children's self-esteem is to get them to feel a sense of ownership and responsibility for their experiences. You can help children develop a personal and vested interest in their own activities by giving them the freedom to make mistakes, finding ways for them to contribute to their learning experience and giving them choices. As we begin another school year, I ask our volunteers and donors to continue your support of READ Vol. 11, Issue 3/September 2011 The first ever READ literacy camp was held this past summer at Camp Timbers in West Branch. Read all about it on page 2. with your time and/or financial commitment to help children experience positive opportunities to learn to read and write. The first ever literacy camp sponsored in part by the Saginaw Y Strong Kids campaign, Longfellow Elementary School and the READ Association of

It was an amazing, inspiring and adventurous week for the 24 Longfellow Elementary School boys and girls who attended the summer residential camp

In addition to experiencing all that camp has to offer, fifteen boys were selected to participate in two hours of daily reading and writing

Longfellow teachers Jan vonreichbauer, Candis Thomas and Terri Ognisky, donated their time and talents to create a Survival Literacy theme curriculum

Thank YOU to our wonderful partners, the medical community for your help with camp physicals and the generous donors who financially supported this

3 Fall Orientation For all Returning Mentors Tuesday, September am - 11 am Historical Society of Saginaw County Castle Museum 500 Federal (At the corner of Federal and South Jefferson Avenue) Parking available behind the Museum and street parking available surrounding the Museum. Museum tours will be available after the meeting. OR Wednesday, September 28 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Mid Michigan Children's Museum 315 West Genesee (Located between North Michigan and Niagara Street) Come early and tour the museum before the meeting. Fall Orientation Theme: Literacy Activities to Use with Your Students Presentation will include ten activities that give students an opportunity to have fun with words as they expand and enrich the meanings of words that they use in reading and writing.

4 The tenth anniversary celebration of the DEAR at the Zoo - Drop Everything and READ event was an amazing successful day from start to finish and we could not have asked for a more beautiful sunshine day. Over 1400 children and their families enjoyed all the literacy festivities along with their zoo adventure this past June 15th. Special thanks to the Children's Zoo at Celebration Square and staff for serving as the perfect host for the event, our dedicated booth sponsor partners, grant funders, media friends, author and illustrator Gary and Jan Bower, celebrity announcers and readers, Boy Scouts and leaders, 200+ volunteers and everyone who attended the event.
