2 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 2 HI FROM LEIF The long month of May is upon us and with it brings great spring weather. A few special days come to mind during May. Mother s Day is on Sunday, May 10th so I would like to wish a Happy Mother s Day to all of the Corvettes Limited ladies. Enjoy your special day! Also, this month is Armed Forces Day which is on Saturday, May 16th. Thanks to all the members of our military forces for their patriotic service in support of our country. Finally, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 25th. Remember to observe this day to honor our service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. I would like to welcome the new members to Corvettes Limited. Jerry and Linda Froschauer joined in April and Don and Bonnie Carr who joined in March. Welcome to Corvettes Limited. We had two exciting events during the month of April. We cruised to Corona to visit the Day Family Museum which had great classic cars, ample parking, and good food at the In-N-Out Burger located across the street. Thank you to Randy and Rosemary Skillman for hosting the event. Also in April we went to the Hollywood Museum which had numerous exhibits and memorabilia from movies, TV, and celebrities from the past. The museum along with lunch afterwards at Mel s Drive-in made for an enjoyable day. Thank you to Debbie Hagman for putting this event together. Thank you to Keith and Daisy Hartwig for leading our caravan to the Vette Set Car Show in Redondo Beach. Congratulations to Keith for winning the best C2 trophy and to Randy Valparaiso for winning the best C7 trophy. I m looking forward to the upcoming events this month. On May 17th, Tony and Karen DiGiovanni are leading the run to the Plastic Fantastic Car Show at Seaport Village in San Diego. Also, on May 23rd is the run to Seal Beach and lunch at the Taco Surf Mexican Restaurant hosted by Kathy Henry. This event was a lot of fun last year with cool weather, delicious food, and nearby shops. It has been postponed to August. On a more serious note, there was a corvette accident related to another club that occurred on April 18th in Santa Clarita that resulted in two fatalities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families. Please remember that we all drive fast cars so everybody please be safe out there on the road. Finally, a reminder that we still need volunteers for the general meeting raffle for the months of July, September, and January. A total of two members are needed to run the raffle so we are still in need of six more volunteers. If you can help us out, please sign up or see me. I look forward to seeing everyone at the next general meeting. LEIF LEIF HAGMAN, PRESIDENT

5 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 5 MEMBERSHIP NEWS & VIEWS HAPPY MOTHER S DAY to all mothers and their mothers. I hope everyone has a lovely day. I recently spent an afternoon at the Huntington Library & Garden. Might be a nice place to spend the day with mom. April Showers definitely brought us May Flowers with our two newest members JERRY and LINDA FROSCHAUER. Jerry and Linda are the proud owners of a 1960 red convertible that they have owned for 20 years. Recent transplants to California in October of last year they decided to settle in Pasadena which is not too far from their son who lives in Sun Valley. Jerry is looking forward to his up-coming retirement from IBM where he sells software. Jerry, we have some ideas about how to fill up your calendar, just check out the Corvettes Limited calendar. Kudos to Brian and Ronnie as our newest members found us on the web. WELCOME TO COR- VETTES LIMITED JERRY and LINDA. Can t wait to get to know you better and spend time with you. Believe it or not, miracles do happen. Many of you know that on December 30, my Corvette was wantonly attacked by a Cal Trans street sweeper on the 210 Freeway. I don t know why Cal Trans felt the need to sweep the freeway at 10 AM on a Tuesday without closing lanes. The street sweeper hit a piece of metal that was thrown into my lane and I couldn t avoid it. It went under the car and became lodged in the rocker panel. I made a claim with Cal Trans and THEY PAID IT. They said it would take 6 months to review the claim and I was pretty sure they would deny it. Surprise, surprise and it only took 2 months. Good job Cal Trans. Although I have asked a number of times before, there are still a couple of members that continue to make dinner reservations and then do not eat dinner. PLEASE, if you make a reservation and find you can t make it, let me know. Rob of the Elks has offered to cook dinner for us, but he needs an accurate head count. If it isn t right, someone may not get dinner or, even worse, Rob ends up cooking food no one eats. Be considerate and let me know BEFORE the meeting if you aren t eating dinner. Since I was on the Amsterdam trip until May 1, Char was kind enough to take the dinner reservations for the May dinner. THANK YOU CHAR. If you have not made your reservation, please contact Char. SAVE THE DATE Saturday, July 18, 2015 will be the annual Braille Rally. This is a very special rally because while you are the driver, your navigator is a blind Braille student reading the instructions written in Braille. These young people go to classes all year to practice their Braille and learn how to run a rally. I have run this rally several times and it is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in a car. These young people will never get an opportunity to drive and by navigating this rally, they get to do something most kids their age don t do. Please consider becoming a driver and spending the day getting to know some very special students. Flyers will be available at the meetings or you can check with me for more information. 12 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 12 TECH TALK EPS Electric Power Steering In the old days we had hydraulic power steering, it ran all of the time the engine was on. The horse power the hydraulic pump used varied between 3 to 5 HP. EPS is electric and power is used only when needed. Typical benefits in fuel efficiency is 3 to 4 percent, or 1 MPG per mid sized car. Steering feel is hard to achieve with EPS. There a 3 types of EPS units, each has its own unique design and application. Column Mount. Found on Fiat 500, Hyundai Sonata, Lexus LF-A. Smaller care require up to 40 pound-feet of steering assistance. These units are mounted on the steering shaft at the top, just under the dash board or just before the shaft enter the rack and pinion like on a Honda. Its hard for the system to capture any steering feed back, some are better than others. The Mazda 3 uses a column mounted motor and has the best steering in its class thanks in part to the 6.5 degrees of front suspension caster. Column are the least expensive of the 3 basic designs. Dual Pinion. Found on Buick Regal, Chevy Cruze, Jeep Cherokee, Dual pinion has a motor next to the rack and the steering rack is fitted with a second pinion gear. The main sensor is adjacent to the steering shaft. This system falls between the column mount and the belt drive in cost, it is fairly easy to fit and also provides some freedom in the location and orientation of the motor and gear assembly. All of the assist parts live in nasty environment under the hood, they are subject to much more rigorous durability testing. Belt Drive found on Cadillac ATS, Chevy Corvette C 7, Ford Focus. EPS cars which use the belt drive are consider to be the best. The motor sits on top of the rack and uses a toothed belt to go around the steering rack. The sensor for the steering wheel position and torque is at the bottom of the steering shaft. The EPS computer sensors how much assistance is needed, the motor turns ball screw and applies axial force, more than 2000 pounds on some cars directly to the steering rack. Since the sensors are closer to the rack, they are more sensitive to feedback. There is no reason why a good belt driven system can not deliver the same performance as a good hydraulic system. Another reason the Engineers at GM went to EPS is no hydraulic fluid to age and wear out. Any one with a C 6 or earlier should take a look at the Power steering fluid every now and then to see if the fluid appears to be burnt or smelly bad. If it smells bad or gets gritty it time to see Richard.. A C 3 with power steering fluid failure, including the steering box and pump will cost $800 +-, and a C 5 will cost $2000 for the rack and pinion assembly and power steering pump. Fluid changes are cheaper than a C 7. Questions? morg74@aol.com ED MORGAN, MEMBER 1982

13 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 13 HOLLYWOOD MUSEUM 4/25/2015 It was a cool cloudy morning on Saturday, April 25th. With the rain on hold until later in the afternoon, Corvettes Limited hit the road and cruised to Hollywood for a self-guided tour of The Hollywood Museum. The Hollywood Museum has the largest collection of authentic showbiz memorabilia to include one of a kind costumes, props, photographs, scripts, famous cars, personal artifacts, posters and more. It is housed in the historic Max Factor Building where Max Factor, Hollywood s Makeup King, created the looks of Hollywood s golden era stars such as Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Judy Garland, Mae West, Jean Harlow, and Marilyn Monroe just to name a few. When we arrived, our guide Ken Horn gave us a brief history about Max Factor, the exhibits currently on display, and took some of us for a a ride in the Max Factor Building s elevator. Once you enter this converted freight elevator, the walls begin to expand to reveal famous movie posters and a beautiful stained glass window above. As the elevator continued, we asked Ken about the top floor which is now called the Penthouse Star Ballroom. This floor is the perfect Hollywood party place complete with eight big screen TV s and surrounded by glamorous lounge furnishings. The Hollywood Museum features a total of four floors of exhibits with a lobby floor, two floors above, and a basement floor below. The lobby floor houses the original Max Factor Makeup Studio with a room dedicated to blondes, a room dedicated to brunettes, and a room dedicated to redheads. This is where Marilyn Monroe became a blonde and Lucille Ball became a famous redhead. In the theatre room, you can watch the film Max Factor Hollywood Fashion Machine while sitting on the original pews from The Exorcist. There is also a gallery featuring items from the Planet of the Apes, Cary Grant s Royals Royce, and much more. The second and third floors are devoted exclusively to Hollywood memorabilia that include costumes and props from famous movies and TV shows, classic cars, original posters, and all kinds of personal items. Here you can see everything from Judy Garland s ruby red slippers, Marilyn Monroe s dress, and classic cars from The Beverly Hillbillies, Nightcrawler, and Elvira, Mistress of the Night. The basement floor was once a speakeasy and bowling alley during the prohibition. Ken referred to it as Max Factor s man cave. Today it houses all things creepy and scary with a collection from many cult horror films. Here you can walk in the footsteps of Jodie Foster to Hannibal Lecter s jail cell from Silence of the Lambs as well as see an array of other props from the film. This historic museum along with lunch at Mel s Drive-In made for a fun filled day with fellow club members. DEBBIE HAGMAN
