GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 6 MEMBERSHIP NEWS & VIEWS Boy was I wrong (twice). When Dave Thompson first told us about his trip to Palm Springs where we would be taking the tram, I thought we would be going up the mountain WRONG. Then, he explained it was a tram around the Living Desert Gardens in Palm Desert and I thought okay, the desert has some beautiful plants and this should be wonderful. Not wrong, but I found out when we arrived I WRONG I was about what we would be seeing. We got on our trams and off we went in different directions (this avoided us jockeying to see) We saw the most wonderful scenery and animals. The name of the venue is actually the Living Desert Zoo/Garden and they certainly lived up to the Zoo part and, of course, garden. Our tour guide was excellent and we saw lots of the Zoo/Garden. I definitely want to go back and feed the giraffe! The camel with the green lipstick was also very cute (she paints!). After our two hour guided tram tour we broke up into several groups and went to lunch. I joined a group that ended up at the Cheesecake Factory where we were seated next to some more of our members. There were about two dozen enjoying a great lunch and recounting our favorite parts. Believe me, there were many great sights to choose from. THANK YOU DAVE for a wonderful day and showing us a great new place. KUDOS to Doug and Linda Mitts who hosted Corvettes Limited for the Super Bowl Party on February 1, Good company, including some members we haven t seen in a while, wonderful conversation and excellent food. Oh yeah, there was a pretty football game going on. We all had a great time. Several members made an attempt at wearing out one of the dogs with a game of catch, but I believe the dog wore at least three members out on that game. Thank you DOUG and LINDA for opening up your home again. I m so excited. On April 21, Barbara Price is leading a few of us on a river cruise from Amsterdam. The trip was planned to highlight the tulips in bloom. It s going to be a great trip and I can t wait. Thanks to Debbie Hagman who gave me some up-dated/corrections to the Membership List. A new list will be coming out in April. PLEASE check over your information and let me know if you need any changes or corrections. Also, do I have your Corvette information current? I know we have some new cars in the club. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I will be coming out with a new Membership List at the business meeting in April. Also, if you make a reservation for dinner at the business meeting the first Wednesday of the month and can t make it, please LET ME KNOW. Rob asks that I keep the count as accurate as possible. There is one member who is very guilty of doing this. DOROTHY DOROTHY MCCAIN, MEMBERSHIP

GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 7 SUPER BOWL PARTY FEB There was a great turnout of Corvettes Limited members at the Annual Super Bowl party. Everyone brought food so there was plenty to eat! Doug & Linda have a wonderful party house. 80 inch TV and several others. We were all comfortable watching the game. We had a few happy winners of the two pools going and of course the rest losers. Most of us were really into the funny commercials! These parties are a good time to mingle and get to know other members. If you missed it,.hope you will make it next time. Thank you Doug & Linda!

GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 10 FEBRUARY Trip to Palm Springs/Living Desert Met at McDonald s, early Saturday morning to go to Palm Springs and tour the Living Desert Gardens. About 27 corvettes showed up and proceeded on the 10 east. Stopped at the McDonald s in Beaumont for a pit stop and then got back on the 10 to the Living Desert Gardens. What a beautiful sight seeing all the Corvettes on the highway, caravanning to the Gardens. The weather was great, 70 s degree, no wind, open highway and special parking, coned-off area, for all the Corvettes. There were Trams waiting for us to begin our tour of the gardens, nice tour guides and very patient with us elderly folks. Bruce, our tour guide was funny and a local resident of the Palm Springs area so he knew about the plants and local Indian tribe that lived in the area. The tribe, Cahuilla, (KAH-WEE-YA), he mentioned, knew how to obtain water and survive in the desert. Giraffes, Cougars, Snakes, Hyenas, Birds, and many other animals, all in cages or pens. It was a great and delightful experience for us. Also, Bruce showed us some of the plants that can survive droughts and lack of rain, for years. I m glad we took the tram, I wouldn t have lasted walking around the gardens. After the 2-hour tour we all met back at the parking area and started to ask around where people were going for lunch! Brian, my son knows the Palm Springs area pretty well and suggested the Las Casuelas Restaurant where they make large Margaritas and good Mexican food. Randy, Rosie, Brian, Monica, Bob, Kathy, Mitch, Anita followed Brian to the restaurant and had a great lunch! That Burrito was good and large. We ran into Bill Irish and Lola and chatted with them for a couple of minutes. Great trip! Kudos to Dave on planning this very enjoyable trip. Yours Truly, Randy & Rosie Valparaiso

GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 13 TECH TALK The EMC and hidden codes. Depending on the year of your Vette you may have as few as 16 codes or as many as 858 on 1999 and up to 3200+_ on a 2010 C 6. Somewhere in the beginning of computers in the cars, the Manufactures, decided that some of the codes did not warrant turning the Check Engine Light on. Then 1996 the Federal Government decided to establish a fixed criteria for the operation of the Check Engine light. It must come on briefly when you start the car and then turn off. A steady Check Engine light is a Caution light means that something is not right, and a flashing light means stop right now and get a tow. On some vehicles a engine trouble code will remain in the computer for a long time or until the issue is resolved. Sometimes the code is cleared by cycles of starting the engine and stopping the engine. There are codes like P 1592 which is for a Manifold pressure sensor, or the vehicles altimeter. The only indication that this code was there was 50% reduction in fuel mileage. Most of the members would notice this, but might think it was the way they were enjoying the car. When you go to get your car smogged in Calfornia, the smog guy plugs in a code reader to the port under the dash board. This code reader will extract any and all codes in the car, readiness codes, engine codes. If there are any codes, you will not pass your smog test. It is a good idea to get your car to a person with a code reader prior to getting a smog to see if there is any issues that need to be corrected. If you hook up a code reader and you get no communicating with the computer. The drivers are burnt out in computer and it has stopped working. A C 5 has up to six computers, and a early C 4 has only one computer. On the C 4 if the computer is burnt out, just replace it and remember to take out the chip under the removable plate and put the chip into the new computer and reinstall. The cost of a C 4 computer is less than $60. Drivers inside the computer will wear out, even on a late model C 5 a 3 1/2 half mile drive twice a day is not the best you can do for your car. Quite a surprises when all 6 computer had to be replaced. Questions? morg74@aol.com ED MORGAN

GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 18 Hollywood Museum (in the historic Max Factor building) and Lunch at Mel s Drive-in THIS IS NOT THE HOLLYWOOD WAX MUSEUM Saturday, April 25, 2015 We will meet on Saturday, April 25th at 8:30 AM in the Coco s parking lot (1150 W. Colorado Blvd. in Arcadia) and leave at 9:00 AM. The self-guided tour of the Hollywood Museum starts at 10:00 AM. Group tickets for the self-guided tour (adult ticket is $12 & senior/65+ ticket is $10) must be purchased in advance. Please give your money for the tickets to Char Huddleson by the April 1, 2015 club meeting. We will have lunch at Mel s Drive-in (located next door). Valet parking is $8 with validation from the Hollywood Museum or Mel s Drive-in. There is self-parking across the street. The Hollywood Museum is the largest collection of authentic showbiz treasures, props and costumes from Silent Movies, Talkies, Hollywood s Golden Era, Film Noir, Feature Films, and more! The Hollywood Museum is housed in the historic Max Factor building where Max Factor, Hollywood s Makeup King, created the looks of Hollywood s Golden Era stars. You can see where Marilyn Monroe became a blonde and Lucille Ball a famous redhead. The Hollywood Museum features four floors of exhibits (two floors above the lobby and a basement below). The ground floor houses many original displays from the old Max Factor Make-up Studio with one room for blondes only, one room for brunettes only, and another room for redheads only. In the theatre room, you can watch the film Max Factor Hollywood Fashion Machine. There is also a gallery featuring Planet of the Apes, Jurassic Park, Marilyn Monroe s Cadillac limousine, and much more. The second and third floors are devoted exclusively to costumes worn by famous stars in famous films, corresponding props, cars, and posters (as well as a wealth of Hollywood memorabilia). The lower level houses all things creepy and scary. There is a collection from many cult horror films. You can walk down the same jail cell corridor Jodie Foster walked in Silence of the Lambs and see an array of props from the film. Also, there was an article in the LA Times / Calendar recently about the Hollywood Museum. With the race to the Oscars in the final stretch, the Hollywood Museum recently opened its annual Celebration of Entertainment Awards that will be on display through April 26th.
