6 ENVIRONMENT Upgrade continues for Mount Isa s comprehensive air quality monitoring system Matthew Meere, MIM Environmental Air Quality and Technical Instruments Superintendent with an upgraded air quality monitoring unit, located at Parkside. Since 2014, Mount Isa Mines (MIM) has been progressively updating each of our 12 air quality monitoring sites located across Mount Isa. Air quality monitoring is a major aspect of managing our environmental performance, with Mount Isa hosting one of the most intensive air quality monitoring networks of any city in Australia. The upgraded network ensures we continue to capture the most comprehensive and accurate data for air quality management in Mount Isa. Matthew Meere, Environmental Air Quality and Technical Instruments Superintendent says MIM has been operating continuous sulphur dioxide monitors in Mount Isa since 1975 so it s important to introduce new technology and equipment when it s available. Upgrading the network allows us to improve the design of the units, install state-of-the-art equipment and combine our monitoring network into a standard footprint, Matthew says. As part of the upgrade we ve relocated some monitors, installed additional equipment and increased the size to improve the design of the units. You can read more about our comprehensive air quality monitoring network and view real-time air quality performance results on our Air Quality in Mount Isa (AQMI) Portal via our MIM website, This allows us to generate more precise sulphur dioxide data, with auto-calibration systems and better temperature control of the instruments. Matthew further explains that the increased size of the units means we can install additional equipment. We now have additional weather stations that provide more ground level wind information to our Air Quality Control Centre, as well as continuous dust monitors at some locations that determine dust levels and if the source is natural, from the city of Mount Isa or from our operations. There are three remaining air quality monitoring units to be upgraded. You can read more about our comprehensive air quality monitoring network and view real-time air quality performance results on our Air Quality in Mount Isa (AQMI) Portal via our MIM website, Additionally, our AQMI smartphone app provides users with real-time wind conditions and notifies users if there is an increased likelihood of sulphur dioxide in the community. You can download our free AQMI smartphone app from the Apple App store, Google Play or Blackberry World by searching for AQMI. 4 MINE TO MARKET

8 OPERATIONS Black Star Open Cut has mined more than 34 million tonnes of zinc-lead ore Black Star Open Cut mine comes to an end in 2016 In the second half of 2016 our Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) mine will move into Care and Maintenance following more than a decade of mining activity. This is in line with the operation s established life of mine plan which has seen the operation boast production of more than 34 million tonnes of zinc-lead ore, while maintaining underground portal access and limiting impact on our underground copper operations in the adjacent Enterprise mine. BSOC was developed in 2004 to extract the remaining surface extents and pillars of zinc, lead and silver mineralisation mined from the old Isa Underground Lead Mine, which operated between 1929 and From 1 August 2016, BSOC will move from its current 24 hour operation to a dayshift only operation, which will result in a 50 per cent reduction of the workforce. Ben Young, Mine Operations Manager Zinc Open Pits says the mining plan for BSOC extends to September 2016 which is when we expect to see the final ore from the mine extracted from the 3056RL. We are working closely with 100 employees who are impacted by these changes to ensure they are appropriately supported during this transition, Ben says. Outplacement discussions with employees commenced in February and involved discussions surrounding employee completion dates and re-deployment opportunities. We have identified a number of opportunities that will be available for re-deployment at our other Mount Isa operations, and will be utilising re-deployment as much as possible. A key focus will be on retaining talent in other roles within our business. Our goal is to provide clarity, options and certainty for our 100 BSOC employees. The interactions with historic and current underground workings are only some of the challenges we face each day at Black Star, this dynamic environment sets us apart from other open cut operations. To have achieved what we have with our safety record is an outstanding achievement that everyone who has ever been part of the team should be very proud of, Ben says. The outplacement services coordinated by our Human Resources team includes: career transitioning counselling; career assessment and guidance; resume preparation; job search techniques; self-marketing training and interview coaching. Additionally the Employee Assistance Program service providers will be made available for our BSOC employees and their families for specialised counselling support. 6 MINE TO MARKET

9 OPERATIONS Innovative buggy safely inspects pipeline Mount Isa Mines Water EA Project team and contractor, Diverse Surveyors have manufactured a remote controlled buggy to safely inspect the condition of a pipeline that stretches from Max s Pond to Black Star. The unknown condition of the corrugated metal pipeline and the confined space means that human inspection is not possible prompting the team to come up with a safe way to navigate inside the pipeline to check for any damage, blockages, junction points or alignment changes. The remote controlled buggy was created at minimal cost using a few strategically assembled objects including; a remote control toy car, a selfie stick, an old mobile phone rescued from the salvage yard and a couple of LED lights. The use of transmitters enables the mobile phone s Wi-Fi to send images back to a second device giving visibility within the pipeline. Additionally, a nylon fishing rod provides a safety net to allow for retrievals of the buggy in emergency situations. Remote control devices known as crawler vehicles, which are used in similar circumstances, are available on the market however can cost more than $70,000. Stephanie Sherritt, Mount Isa Mines Civil Engineer says the team needed to develop a vehicle that could perform the inspection function and traverse uneven ground but be much more cost effective. The system is basic but shows great resourcefulness from the team in developing a solution that is fit for purpose, cost effective and takes advantage of simple, widely available mobile technology, Stephanie says. The buggy has proven to be a very successful tool in safely gathering information for the project as well as providing a cost effective solution to an otherwise extravagantly priced piece of equipment, Stephanie says. 10 OPERATIONS Ernest Henry streamlines site access Workers at Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) now enter site manually following security and site access upgrades completed in January. During the busy project construction phase for EHM s transition to underground mining, security guards worked to provide inductions and control site access for large numbers of personnel and mobile equipment. Anthony Kyle, Health and Safety Superintendent says contractor and visitor numbers to site have decreased significantly with steady state operations underway. We conducted a thorough review of our site access procedures to bring them into line with current operating conditions and identified a number of opportunities for improvements and cost savings, Anthony explains. The main change has been the relocation of our boomgates and pedestrian turnstiles to different access points and the installation of swipe tag readers and display screens to enable our workers to manually swipe themselves in and out of site. Our Health and Safety and Communications teams worked closely to complete the project, which also involved the installation of security cameras, phones and blue flashing lights which signal random selection to an individual for Safe for Work testing. Visitor inductions are now completed at the main Administration building with a member of the Health and Safety team. Bus routes and timetables have also been amended to maximise bus usage for transport to and from site. The bulk of the project works took place late last year and we started using the new system in January, Anthony says. The changeover has gone quite smoothly and we will continue to monitor its effectiveness to identify further opportunities for improvement. 8 MINE TO MARKET

13 Electro fishing equipment in action on the southern side of the river crossing on Moondarra Drive Road ENVIRONMENT Enviros ditch rods for electro fishing during sample monitoring Our Mount Isa Mines (MIM) Environmental team recently conducted fish monitoring in the waterways surrounding our mining lease using an electro fishing method. Electro fishing is a common technique using a non-lethal electric current to stun fish and is a safe and effective way of conducting sampling whilst causing no permanent harm to the fish. The sample monitoring is completed as part of our Receiving Environment Monitoring Program (REMP) which aims to monitor and assess the potential impacts of mining activity on the receiving environment, including the Leichhardt River catchment. One of the best ways of determining aquatic ecosystem health is by monitoring the fish that inhabit the local waterways as they are an excellent indicator of aquatic health since their lifecycle depends on water. Different species have varying lifespans that can reflect short and long term environmental changes. Fish species abundance, distribution, general health along with water quality and habitat conditions are assessed and compared as part of the sample monitoring. The majority of electro fishing is performed from an electro fisher mounted in a four metre aluminium boat, however for sites that are inaccessible or too small for a boat a backpack electro fisher is used. Kate Masters, Environment Stewardship Superintendent says having a good understanding of fish abundance and health in the Leichhardt River catchment over time ensures environmental trends can be monitored. Findings of the monitoring so far have shown that spangled perch and rainbowfish are the most widespread species and quickest to recolonise sites, Kate says. The study also shows that the major factor affecting fish abundance and health in the region is from natural causes such as variable climatic conditions including drought. 14 OUR PEOPLE Stuart Smith s story Production Supervisor, Black Star Open Cut 12 MINE TO MARKET

15 Stuart is one of BSOC s longest serving employees, along with (from left) Vance Martin, Ben Young, Vijay Lal, Peter McAllister, Kathy Perez, Chris Dawkins, Rob Ferris, Stuart Smith, Averil Portch and Colin Gasiner Eleven and a half years of working at Mount Isa s Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) mine has given Stuart Smith, Production Supervisor many insights into mining, gaining valuable expertise within a technically challenging open cut operation, an appreciation and thirst for a vibrant safety culture and above all, relishing the camaraderie of his colleagues and mates. Stuart has been with BSOC since the beginning, having started in 2004 as the new pit began mining the upper layers of the old Lead Mine in Mount Isa. At that time there were only two drop cuts into the pit. Over the years, Stuart has watched the pit grow to a depth of over 320 metres, 1,100 meters long and 850 metres wide and it has sustained a workforce of 120 operators. Over its life, BSOC has presented the team with a number of unique technical challenges from mining over and through the Isa Lead Mine s expansive network of abandoned underground workings, which saw the BSOC team face and overcome some major geotechnical and mining challenges. Stuart says he s proud to have been part of the team who has conquered the challenges of void management to ensure the stability of the pit and the safety of all mine personnel. We ve always worked really hard on our safety performance because of the risks involved with underground voids, Stuart says. There have been times when we ve been faced with some big challenges, but our innovative approach to void management has allowed the safe recovery of valuable mineral resource that would have been otherwise inaccessible. Safety and the wellbeing of our people has always been our main focus at Black Star and I think we can all be very proud of what we have achieved. As Production Supervisor, Stuart runs the production shift, looking after a team of 15, running trucks, dozers and diggers through the mine. He credits his long tenure at BSOC to the outstanding team of people that has mentored, motivated and supported him over the years. I really enjoy a challenge and that certainly is Black Star, the thing I love the most about my job is the outstanding team of skilled people that I have around me and the enthusiasm amongst the group to be successful. When asked how he handles the pressure of the job, Stuart says he handles it fairly well and to a certain degree it makes him perform at his best. It s the teamwork and camaraderie that motivates him to come to work each and every day. The highlight of my time here has to be the great team that we ve built. The strong sense of team is something I ve loved about working at BSOC. Another bonus for me was meeting my wife Natasha here. Natasha was an Operator and we met at BSOC in Stuart s children, Willow (five) and Tanner (two) are happy to be calling Mount Isa home. Originally from Deniliquin in NSW Stuart moved to Mount Isa in 2004 after hearing that BSOC was opening. Prior to that Stuart had come from a rural background working on sheep and cattle stations since leaving school in When asked what the next stage of his career will bring, he says his main focus at the moment is completing BSOC and doing that safely and successfully. During his days off you ll usually find Stuart taking a trip to Karumba or Burketown for a fishing trip. I really enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, fishing and camping. Ben Young, Mine Operations Manager Zinc Open Pits says Stuart is one of the longest serving employees at Black Star Open Cut. I d like to recognise Stuart for over a decade s service to BSOC and thank him for his contribution to our business, Ben says. MINE TO MARKET 13

20 OUR PEOPLE Celebrating International Women s Day Our Mount Isa and Cloncurry operations celebrated International Women s Day (IWD) on 8 March by hosting special breakfasts and a live-screening of the Queensland Resources Council s (QRC s) Resources Awards for Women (RAW) event in Brisbane. Seventy seven female employees from Mount Isa Mines (MIM) and Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) attended the IWD breakfasts at Red Earth Hotel, Mount Isa and the EHM Village, Cloncurry. The breakfasts were an opportunity for employees to celebrate IWD with their colleagues, to network and to be inspired by other females being recognised for their achievements in the mining industry. Leanne Ryder, Human Resources Manager North Queensland Copper Assets organised the Mount Isa event which celebrated this year s IWD theme of Pledge for Parity to accelerate the path to gender parity. Currently women account for only 18 per cent of the mining workforce, compared with 42 per cent of the total Australian workforce. The numbers of women in operational roles is particularly low, with women comprising seven per cent of the technical professional workforce and three per cent of the site based workforce. At Mount Isa Mines women account for approximately 14 per cent of the total Zinc workforce and 21 per cent of the combined Copper and Central Services workforce. The breakfast was also the perfect opportunity to launch Mount Isa Mines new Girls for Mining Mentoring Program which allows our female employees to mentor local female high school students. The new program is the first of its kind in Mount Isa and was created in response to an identified demand for formal mentoring of local female students. It also provides an opportunity to actively promote the leadership skills of our women working at Mount Isa Mines, Leanne says. This is an exciting opportunity for Mount Isa Mines to further enhance our commitment to gender diversity which is very important to us as a business, but also across the world. The mentoring program will launch in mid-april and allow students to seek information and guidance from their mentor about career direction and employment goals. Mentors and students will also be brought together for three formal events during the school year including a program launch event, networking function and an end of program celebration. Mount Isa Mines employees enjoy the International Women s Day breakfast at Red Earth (back left to right) Laura Beattie, Erin Dean, Madeleine Merrett, Moira Van Lelyveld (front left to right) Cathie Burke, Rachel Walsh, Erin Wallace, Cordelia Chin and Tamahra Holder Mount Isa Mines employees enjoy the International Women s Day breakfast at Red Earth (left to right) Billie Andrade, Melissa Candy, Jackie Kippist and Ricki Makim 18 MINE TO MARKET

24 SAFETY INRUSH AND OUTBURST The intent of this Protocol is to eliminate or minimise the potential for fatalities, injuries and incidents arising from risks associated with an inrush of water, gases or materials which flow when wet either in a surface or underground mine and/or risk associated with an outburst event in an underground mine. CRITICAL CONSIDERATIONS An inrush risk assessment must be conducted to identify potential sources, and once identified, a Management Plan must be developed, implemented and maintained. Where appropriate a geotechnical assessment must be undertaken to determine the nature and magnitude of potential inrush/outburst sources. Inrush control zones (i.e. stand off distances or barriers) must be established. A Permit to Mine approval process must include a requirement for regular surveys and inspections. RELATED LIFE-SAVING BEHAVIOURS Life-Saving Behaviours are intended to save lives and by following them we protect people from potential fatal consequences. The following Life Saving Behaviours are critical in working with risks related to Inrush and Outburst. 2. Always use or wear critical safety equipment. 6. Never modify or over-ride critical safety equipment without approval. 8. Never enter danger zones. 22 MINE TO MARKET

26 FLU SEASON IS BACK Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is caused by a highly contagious virus that is spread by fluids produced during coughing and sneezing, or by direct contact with those fluids on surfaces. People who work with or live in close contact with people who have an underlying medical condition or reduced immunity should be immunised to minimise the spread of the flu to themselves, the people they work or live with and their families. Most cases of influenza occur within a six to eight week period during winter and spring. The incubation period for flu (the time it takes to develop symptoms after an exposure to a sick person) is usually two days. People with flu can be infectious shortly before signs and symptoms commence and for up to five to seven days after becoming sick. Influenza pandemics have occurred four times in the past 100 years and can cause many deaths. The most recent pandemic occurred in 2009 and was caused by swine flu, a H1N1 influenza A virus. Although annual immunisation is the best way to avoid spreading the flu, another effective way to protect ourselves and others from illness is good personal hygiene. SYMPTOMS OF FLU Flu symptoms develop one to three days after infection and include: high fever, chills and sweating sore throat runny or stuffed nose weakness headache general muscle and joint pains (in the legs and back) a non-productive (dry) cough that can later become more severe and productive (sputum or mucous is coughed up). FLU IS NOT THE COMMON COLD The flu is more severe than a bad cold because: Cold symptoms last from two to a few days, whereas the flu can last up to a week The flu causes a high fever, whereas a cold sometimes causes only a mild fever Muscular pains and shivering attacks occur with the flu, but not with a cold Colds cause a runny nose, while the flu usually starts with a dry sensation in the nose and throat Flu symptoms come on quickly whereas colds develop more gradually. AVOID THE SPREAD OF THE FLU Some of the principles of good personal hygiene include: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze Throw your tissue in a plasticlined rubbish bin after use Wash your hands with soap and water, and if water is unavailable use an alcohol-based hand cleaner after you cough or sneeze Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs spread that way Don t go to work if you are unwell and don t send your children to school or childcare if they are unwell. 24 MINE TO MARKET
