Penticton is famous for its long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Precipitation averages slightly more than 330 mm (13") annually. Because Penticton is sheltered from cold, arctic air in the winter by the surrounding mountain ranges, blizzards and freezing rainstorms are very rare. The area is known for its high quality vineyards and premiumvintagesaswellasitsdiversifiedmanufacturing and industrial sectors. Solid growth in manufacturing continues to enhance the economic environment, and to create a diverse yet stable economic base. The largest growth in new jobs over the past ten years has been in construction, services, and value added industries. Penticton also has its own airport. The Penticton Regional Airport (YYF) was constructed during World War II to serve as an emergency landing strip, and was later lengthened to 1,829 meters to accommodate Boeing 737 aircraft. Air Canada Jazz provides service to Vancouver. The Kelowna International Airport also serves the greater Penticton area. It is located approximately 65 kilometers (about minutes) north on Highway 97.
