3 NORTHERN WHEELS NCRG NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 NCRG President s Message In the remaining days of my rein as the NCRG President I must say the last 4 years have been fun and eventful. Working with Directors Jim Costello, Al Stoll, Patti Stetson and Advisor Tom Rut has been a breeze. Three of those years we enjoyed NCRG Roundups hosted by the Santa Clara Valley Chapter, Capitol A s and Modesto Area A s. Then last year the Tokay A s stepped up and hosted a Hub Tour centered in Lodi. These were all fun and events well done by the local chapters. A slate of officers was nominated at the NCRG meeting in Turlock, and the election is on the agenda for the NCRG meeting at the Nugget on Monday June 25, 2018 from 3:00 to 4:00 pm in Redwood Room 1. Most of the 28 NCRG Chapters have taken part in planning the 2018 MAFCA National Convention at the Nugget Resort Casino in Sparks Nevada. Others are willing to help out as needed. The convention registration form came out earlier than usual and some of the tours closed soon after. Check the website and click on the Aces & A s Logo for the latest information and current form if you haven t registered yet. If you are going on the Lake Tahoe Dinner Cruise, the buses leave at 4:00 pm on Saturday. If you are one of the 116 people coming with a trailer, plan to arrive early. Trailer parking and unloading will likely be congested and you will need to register for the convention before boarding the bus. There are numerous self-guided tours to enjoy and a great way to explore the area. At the convention in 1998 we had new friends tag along as we stopped for lunch in Truckee and drove around the north shore of Lake Tahoe and back over Mt Rose. The next day we took a bunch up the mountain road to Virginia City and one day went antiquing in Genoa and the surrounding area. If you are hanging around the hotel on Monday, the seminars are not to be missed, and tickets will be available if you didn t prepay on your registration. In addition to 2 Les Andrews Model A tech sessions and Tom Rut s use of the Judging Standards and Restoration Guidelines, a very entertaining and educational Hubley Seminar will be presented by Bob Johnson. See what makes your Hubley a racer or slug, and fix it before the races on Wednesday. Remember to Check your timing and advance to Sparks. Minutes of the May 13, 2017 meeting Patti Stetson - Correction: The meeting was held at the Lodi Hub Tour, not the Turlock swap meet as printed in the Northern Wheels NCRG newsletter. Motion to accept with the correction by Trudy Vestal. 2 nd by Sharon Ott. Motion carries. Treasurer s Report Al Stoll Financial Report was reviewed by each line item. See attached. Noted that since there was not a Roundup in 2017, there was not a 10% return on any profit which historically NCRG receives from the host chapter. End of year with loss of $ Al plans to have a local CPA review and send the tax returns for Motion to approve the financial report as written by Cindy Omoth. 2 nd by Noel Stetson. Motion carries Budget was reviewed by each line item. See attached. Clarification that the MAFCA National Convention is not included since projection of profit/loss is premature at this time. Motion by Bob Ott to approve the budget as written. 2 nd by Sharon Stoll. Motion carries. NCRG Chapter Registration. Dues from 12 chapters have been received to date. Website - Steve Mick, Web Master. Absent, no report. Northern Wheels Newsletter - Tom Jeanes, Editor. Absent, no report. December newsletters were handed out. Youth Vacant - We need someone to head. No volunteer coordinator has stepped forward. Steve noted there have been no inquiries from youth about the award this year. MAFCA Report-Jay McCord, Membership Director. Free MAFCA membership has been extended. There were 270 new members in 2017; if all renew from last year there will be The goal at year end is about 15,000. Handed out new membership forms. Presented information and handed out flyers on the 2019 hub Canyonlands National Tour in southern Utah. Jay is presenting a new membership initiative at the MAFCA board meeting, details not available until discussed at the meeting. MAFFI Report- Jay McCord reported the Gilmore Museum was voted the #1 auto museum in Michigan and the Model A Museum was #1 museum at the Gilmore complex. The new MAFCA membership flyer has a photo of a Best of show A400 of Bill Edstrom who donated his entire collection to MAFFI. Marsha Quesnel, MAFFI Trustee reported there is a collectable memorial pin from Model A Day which is limited in number. There is a new interactive display of a mock up Model A demonstrating how to

5 NORTHERN WHEELS NCRG NEWSLETTER PAGE 5 start a Model A. There is a rotating display from the Model A Museum which will be at other museums; now at the Auburn/Cord Museum in Indiana. MAFFI is looking for a trustee from the West coast to serve on the board and represent this area. New Business Form a Nominating Committee by March for June 26 election. Steve reported that he is stepping down from the NCRG board and will serve as advisor. Al has agreed to continue as treasurer, Patti has agreed to continue as secretary, Jim has agreed to serve as president if there is no interest from others. Any nominations for the NCRG Board of Directors from the floor? Trudy nominated Jim Costello for president. 2 nd by Noel. Paul Shinn from Modesto Area A s and Sonora A s is willing to serve as vice president. Motion by Trudy to nominate Paul Shinn for VP. 2 nd by Noel. The election will be at the June NCRG meeting. CCRG Cambria Cuesta Crankers April , Sunday-Tuesday. Jay McCord reported the host hotel is Cambria Pines Lodge with other hotels in the area. Information is on the Cuesta Crankers website. Spring Opener Quincy - Feather River A s & Lake County A s Tentative date is May 4, 5 & 6, Registration form will be out soon and available on the NCRG and MAFCA website. Sonoma A s 2019 NCRG Roundup, Flamingo Conference Resort & Spa - Santa Rosa May 27 30, Weekday event due to the cost and availability of rooms. Further information forthcoming. Other new business. Steve reported a letter has been sent to NCRG presidents, representatives and chapter about donations for the Convention welcome party. Ongoing Business Super Committee Trudy Vestal update, next Super Committee meeting is April 20 21, 2018 at the Nugget. Convention registrations to date: 305 with 200 arriving on Saturday. Hotel reservations to date: 396. The Queen of Hearts event has been cancelled. The NCRG meeting is scheduled for Monday, 3-4PM. Ehrman Mansion Friday tour: 25 spaces left. Lake Tahoe dinner cruise Saturday is half full. Grand tour: 509 to date. Trailer parking: 80 to date. Nugget has 150 trailer spaces. A notice is being sent to those attending the Saturday dinner cruise to arrive early to allow time for hotel check in and convention registration. Old Business Anyone submitting Logo ideas? Steve handed out the sample logo submitted at the May meeting. Suggestion made to add Chapter of MAFCA, MAFCA logo or a Model A, eliminate the county lines and use larger print. No other ideas submitted. The logo will be an agenda item at the June meeting. Any other business? None. The next meeting will be at the MAFCA National Convention on Monday June 25 at 3:00 PM. I intend to hypnotize each and every member of the audience. The excitement was almost electric as Claude withdrew a beautiful antique pocket watch from his coat. I want each of you to keep your eye on this the antique watch. It s a very special watch. It s been in my family for six generations. He began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting, Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface. Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the swaying watch, until, suddenly it slipped from the hypnotist s fingers and fell to the floor. Breaking into a hundred pieces. SH*T! exclaimed the hypnotist. It took three days to clean up the Senior Center. LAWYERS What do you have when you bury six lawyers up to their necks in sand? Not enough sand. A lawyer and the Pope died at the same time, both went to heaven. They were met at the Pearly Gate by St. Peter who conducted them to their rooms. The Pope s room was Spartan with bare floors, an army cot for a bed and a single bulb for light. They came to the Lawyer s room. It was huge with wall to wall carpeting, king sized water bed, indirect lighting, color TV, stereo, Jacuzzi and fully stocked bar. The Lawyer said, There must be some mistake. This must be the Pope s room. St. Peter said, There s no mistake. This is your room. WE have lots of Popes, but you re our very first Lawyer. Did you hear that the Post Office had to recall its series of stamps depicting famous lawyers? People were confused about which side to spit upon. FLYING TO FRANKFURT The German controllers at the Frankfurt Airport were a short-tempered lot. They no only expected you to know what parking location but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some amusement that we (PanAm747) listened to the following exchange between Frankfurt ground and British Airways 747 (radio call Speedbird 206) after landing. Speedbird 206: Good morning Frankfurt. Speedbird 206 clear of active. Ground: Good Morning, taxi to your gate. The British Airways 747 pulls in the main taxiway and stops. Ground: Speedbird, do you not know where you are going? Speedbird 206: Stand by, ground. I am looking up the gate location now. Ground (impatiently): Speedbird 206, have you never flown to Frankfurt before? Speedbird 206 (coolly): Yes, in But I didn t stop! In 1899, the first automotive repair shop opened, the paper clip was invented, Carnation mastered the art of canning evaporated milk and patents were granted to aspirin and lawn mowers.
