Visit us on-line at auspost.com.au/stamps Dear Collectors, This final Bulletin for brings a mix of traditional end of year issues and special releases. Our first issue is Bugs and Butterflies, our tenth annual Stamp Collecting Month release. The themes and design treatments for our Stamp Collecting Month will appeal to young collectors and wouldbe collectors. As well as the six insects featured on the stamps and the beautiful birdwing butterfly on the miniature sheet a number of insects are depicted hiding in the sticks and shadows, between leaves and in cracks in the wood. As you would no doubt be aware by now the Rugby World Cup is coming to Australia. Our 8 October issue marks this historic event. Associated products with this issue include a souvenir booklet and Nick Farr-Jones book, Story of the Rugby World Cup, written exclusively for Australia Post. In mid October our Asthma issue coincides with Asthma Australia s National Asthma Week and reinforces the campaign message that despite being a significant and serious medical condition, most people with asthma can lead full and active lives. We close October with our traditional Christmas issue, based on the Nativity story and the Christmas Island issue with a cheeky Santa in a tropical setting. If you are daunted by end of year gift giving, our new Special Occasions Booklets will save the day. These beautiful, thoughtful and practical booklets are ideal for those times when you want to remember or thank someone during the holiday season. Of course the gift of an annual collection is a spectacular way to mark the year just finishing. The Collection of Australian Stamps and the Territories Collections will be available by mail order from the Australian Philatelic Bureau and in Post retail outlets from 31 October. Finally as the year comes to a close, I would like to wish all our readers a happy and safe holiday season. I look forward to sharing our 2004 issues with you next year. Amber McDougall, Manager, Philatelic Group 2

3 24 September Bugs and Butterflies 150th Anniversary Murray River Shipping stamp collecting month Ulysses Butterfly Green Mantid and Damselfly Emperor Gum Moth Caterpillar Leichhardt's Grasshopper Fiddler Beetle Vedalia Ladybird Miniature sheet 65% actual size Bugs and butterflies fascinate children (and a great many adults). This year we are inviting children to hop into stamps with Bugs and Butterflies during Stamp Collecting Month. In this issue are gummed and self-adhesive stamps, a miniature sheet, first day covers, stamp and collector packs and a set of six maximum cards. There are two issue sheets each featuring three stamp designs. Thus there are two gutter strips. There is no special text or design printed in the gutters. What is Stamp Collecting Month? It started in 1993 as a way to introduce children to the hobby of stamp collecting. First a theme is developed that is highly attractive and interesting to children, particularly those between the ages of eight and twelve. The theme must also be supported by parents and encourage educational activities. This is the tenth Stamp Collecting Month. Previous themes have included Space, Wild Babies, The Magic Rainforest, Planet Ocean and Small Pond. This issue is illustrated by Graeme Base with the elaborate detail and hidden images that characterise his popular, award-winning work. The stamps Ulysses butterfly (Papilio ulysses joesa) This icon of far north Queensland makes a spectacular sight, especially when the butterfly s brilliant metallic blue and velvety black features are seen against the backdrop of dark rainforest foliage. Leichhardt s grasshopper (Petasida ephippigera) This is one of Australia s most brightly coloured grasshoppers. It is found in the rugged sandstone country in the Top End of the Northern Territory. The adult s vivid colouring orange-red, with royal blue and black patterns warns potential predators that this bug may not taste as good as it looks. Vedalia ladybird (Rodolia cardinalis) Their bright colours and contrasting spots make ladybirds one of the best known beetle families in Australia. Most ladybirds are carnivorous. They eat other insects, including pests such as aphids, scale insects and mites. Their diet and being a sign of good luck to come makes ladybirds welcome in any garden. 3

This caterpillar is bright green with red and blue lumps along the body. The lumps are topped with non-stinging hairs. A yellow line runs along each side of the body. When the angle of light is just right the yellow line can be mistaken for a leaf s mid-rib. Green mantid (Orthodera ministralis) Its size (its body can be up to 120 mm long) and its posture (with forelegs held together as if praying) make this bug easy to recognise. It s also quite common it is found almost everywhere in Australia. Many species are camouflaged to blend with a particular environment or background, such as flowers, rocks or tree trunks, so they aren t easy to see. This sort of camouflage is handy for predators. Just ask the captive damselfly in the grips of the green mantid on the stamp. Maximum cards Fiddler beetle (Eupoecila australasiae) Beetles are the largest and most diverse order of insects. This one takes its common name from a violin-shaped pattern in its mostly dark brown shell. The fiddler beetle is found from top to bottom of the eastern half of Australia. Miniature sheet The miniature sheet features additional creatures, including a large and very colourful male birdwing butterfly (Ornithoptera priamus). These butterflies prefer to keep to the treetops where they cruise around with a gliding flight. Birdwings are internationally protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. A U S S T T RALI R A L L I A I A 4

These creatures are hidden within the design. This design technique is one of the hallmarks of the work of Graeme Base. About the illustrator Graeme Base was born in England in 1958 and moved to Australia in He grew up in Melbourne and studied design at the Swinburne Institute of Design. His first book was My Grandma Lives in Gooligulch, published in It took him three years to finish the illustrations for his second book, Animalia (1986). Since then Animalia has sold more than two million copies worldwide, and brought Base international attention and acclaim. He has a tremendous fan base and his new efforts are eagerly anticipated by fans young and old throughout the world. Animalia was followed by The Eleventh Hour (1989), an illustrated mystery in verse in which the clues required to solve the mystery appear in the detailed illustrations Then came The Discovery of Dragons (1996) and The Sign of the Seahorse (1998). In 1999 it was The Worst Band in the Universe, which included a CD of songs played by entrants in the Worst Band in the Universe competition. The Waterhole, a counting book in the spirit of Animalia, was published in Introduce a child to the hobby of a lifetime A Stamp Collecting Starter Kit along with the Bugs and Butterflies stamps or miniatutre sheet is the ideal combination to spark a child s interest in stamps. The kit (just $19.95) includes everything a youngester needs to get started, including a magnifying glass, tweezers, stock sheets, a packet of used stamps plus a case and binder to hold everything together. 5

7 RUGBY WORLD CUP 8 October RUGBY WORLD CUP AUSTRALIA $1.10 AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA RUGBY WORLD CUP RUGBY WORLD CUP RUGBY WORLD CUP The world in union Rugby has a rich and long tradition. It was 1823 at the Rugby School in England when legend has it that William Webb Ellis picked up a soccer ball and ran with it. From that spontaneous begining rugby has grown into a major international sport played in more than 135 countries and governed by the International Rugby Board (IRB). The Rugby World Cup had a distinctly antipodean genesis when in 1983 the Australian Rugby Union and the New Zealand Rugby Football Union independently wrote to the IRB about a Rugby World Cup tournament. In 1987 the inaugural Rugby World Cup (RWC) was jointly staged in Australia and New Zealand. Sixteen countries were invited to participate and about 600,000 people attended matches. Broadcasts went to 17 countries with a global audience of about 300 million. New Zealand won the inaugural cup, beating the European champions France at Eden Park. Four Rugby World Cups and sixteen years later the RWC is the third most popular sporting event, in terms of revenue and viewing audience, surpassed only by the Olympics and the Federation Intérnationalé de Football Association World Cup. The issue The three stamps (one each, $1.10, $1.65) and miniature sheet show distinctive aspects of the game of rugby and the Rugby World Cup trophy (the Webb Ellis Cup). The stamps show a sequence of play using silhouetted figures in action to tell the story of the game. The stamp features the pass with a graphic representation of the goals and silhouettes of players running with the ball. The central stamp ($1.10) features the Webb Ellis Cup against a background depiction of night play at Telstra Stadium. 7

The central motif of the miniature sheet shows a silhouette of the Webb Ellis Cup atop the oval, embracing shape of a rugby ball. The oval which cuts through the stamps, is symbolic of a worldwide sport that encompasses many nations and cultures. It is a visual expression of the cup s slogan, the world in union, which is printed along the base of the miniature sheet. Rugby fans feature in the border area of the miniature s heet A mix of domestic and international denominations reinforces the international nature of the event. As well as the stamps and miniature sheet this issues will include first day covers, a stamp pack, a set of three maximum cards (images not available at time of printing), a souvenir stamp booklet and Nick Farr-Jones book, Story of the Rugby World Cup, written exclusively for Australia Post. The souvenir booklet has three miniature sheet panes (with a face value of $9.75) interleaved with information about the participating teams, and a souvenir postcard of the William Webb Ellis Cup. 11 ACTIVE WITH ASTHMA 14 October A U S T A U S T A U S T A U S T A U S T Sheetlet of ten x 65% actual size A U S T A U S T A U S T A U S T A U S T Melbourne graphic designer Mike Heine has created a bright, optimistic design based on the slogan, active with asthma. The design incorporates figures engaged in a range of active pursuits, symbolising the successful management of asthma. The single design is produced in a sheetlet of ten x. The issue includes a sheetlet pack, first day cover and a maximum card. The issue date coincides with Asthma Australia s annual National Asthma Week campaign from 12 to 18 October. What is asthma? People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs. When the airways are exposed to certain triggers, the airways narrow, and cause breathing difficulty. The airways narrow because the muscles around the airways tighten, the inside lining of the airways swell and extra mucous is produced. The narrowing of the airways can cause a range of symptoms, including coughing, wheezing and/or shortness of breath. The cause of asthma is not known and it can begin at any age and change over time. Asthma in Australia More than two million people in Australia have asthma. Up to one in four children, one in seven adolescents and one in ten adults will experience asthma symptoms at some time in their lives. The prevalence of asthma in Australia has doubled in the past fifteen years. Asthma is one of the leading causes of absenteeism from school and work, childhood admission to hospital, and is among the ten most common reasons for seeing a general practitioner. Despite these alarming statistics, most people with asthma are able to lead a normal, active life. That s the important message behind this stamp issue and the National Asthma Week campaign. 8 October Asthma treatment Although asthma cannot be cured, it can generally be well managed. Education, understanding, regular review and a written asthma action plan are essential to good asthma management. An action plan outlines what medications to take when, how to recognise increasing asthma symptoms, what to do when asthma is worse and when to seek medical help. Good asthma management enables most people with asthma to lead full and active lives. 11

20 AUSTRALIA CHRISTMAS AUSTRALIA 45c AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA 90c Since the first Christmas stamps were issued in Australia in 1957 there have been many depictions of the traditional Christmas story. This year, the Christmas stamps were designed by Indigenous artist Sally Morgan. With her distinctive style and characteristic use of brilliant colour Morgan has created a joyous set of stamps with a uniquely Australian character. Season s Greetings 45c AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIA 90c The stamps The stamp designs illustrate scenes from the story of the birth of Christ Mary and the baby Jesus (45c domestic greeting card concession rate) Three wise men ( domestic base rate for standard letters) Angel appearing to the shepherds (90c domestic large/non-standard rate) The aerogramme The aerogramme follows the design treatment of the stamps. It features a nativity scene in the illustration area and the Christmas star in the stamp area. The designer Sally Morgan was born in Perth, WA, in She first came to national prominence with the publication of her book, My Place, which tells the story of her reconnection with her Aboriginal culture and community. The book Stamp pack, doubles as greeting card was an immediate success and has gone on to sell over half a million copies in Australia. My Place won the Australian Human Rights Award for Literature in 1987 and the 1990 Order of Australia Book Prize. Morgan has also established a reputation as an artist in Australia and overseas. Her works can be found in private and public collections. Her work first appeared on a stamp in 1993 when her print Outback was selected for use on a United Nations stamp issued for the celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Her first illustration for an Australian philatelic product was the Network of Friendship aerogramme (September 1995). 16

24 When Charles Darwin visited the southern atoll of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands in 1836, he commented on the immense number of marine birds. Today this atoll is almost devoid of bird life. Coconut plantation harvesting has destroyed the nesting habitats of most birds and introduced pests have succeeded in depleting species further. The northern atoll, North Keeling Island, which has not been inhabited for any continuous period, is still in its natural state, one of the few remaining untouched tropical islands in the Indian Ocean. North Keeling Island (proclaimed Pulu Keeling National Park in 1995) has a worldwide reputation as a seabird rookery. It is also a staging point for several species of migratory waders that feed on the numerous crabs and other small crustaceans that dominate the shoreline ecology. None of these birds is endemic to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The Eastern Reef Egret (Egretta sacra) and the Sooty Tern (Sterna fuscata) nest on North Keeling Island while the Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres) and the Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) are non-breeding migratory visitors to the island. The continuous scene across the stamps represents the four birds on the shore of the lagoon of North Keeling Island. Eastern Reef Egrets are usually solitary, and stalk prey in a hunched posture in rock pools or coral reefs. They sometimes stand and wait, but more often walk quickly through the shallows, alert for fish, crustaceans or insects. The Eastern Reef Egret on the stamp is represented searching for prey in the shallows. Two Sooty Terns fly in the background. The black and white Sooty Tern s range is the world s vast tropical and subtropical oceans. At sea it lives in the air, rarely settling on the water; indeed, it possibly sleeps on the wing. Over the ocean Sooty Terns keep in flocks to feed on mainly squid, fish and crustaceans. Unlike other terns they do not dive for food but instead scoop it from or just below the water s surface. Feeding is done on the wing, skimming, dipping and wheeling gracefully over the water. The Ruddy Turnstone is named for its habit of flipping over stones and shells in search of crustaceans and molluscs. This small, animated bird breeds in the far north of the Northern Hemisphere from June to July, and makes a long yearly migration to southern continents. When feeding, these shorefrequenting waders are almost constantly on the move. They dash about, snatching at food as it becomes exposed, breaking open barnacles with several rapid blows of the closed bill, prising limpets off rocks, and opening mussels with vigorous chiselling thrusts. Ruddy Turnstones frequent beaches where shingle and masses of seaweed are mixed with stretches of sand. Like the Ruddy Turnstone, the Whimbrel is a non-breeding migrant to North Keeling Island. It breeds in the far north near the Arctic Circle, migrating during the winter months to the warmer southern continents. A medium sized curlew, it forages on beaches and reefs by probing for worms or molluscs in mud or sand and picking up crustaceans and insects among rocks, coral and seaweed. Active and wary, Whimbrels occur on North Keeling Island from September to May either in small flocks or as solitary birds. The goat (sometimes translated as ram or sheep) is the eighth sign in the Chinese zodiac. In Chinese tradition, the goat is the most tranquil of the twelve Chinese animals and symbolises beauty and good fortune. Those born in the year of the Goat are said to be easy-going, amiable, gentle and compassionate, their sense of fun and humour making them popular company. At the same time they can be pessimistic, indecisive and dependent. Family bonds are important to them. Goat years in the 20th century were 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979 and The miniature sheet design is based on one of the many Chinese folk tales involving goats. Five immortals arrived at the city of Guangzhou riding divine goats of different colours. Each carried an ear of grain, which was given to the people to teach them how to cultivate the land. When the five immortals departed the goats turned into rocks. Today the five goat statue is the symbol of Guangzhou city. The warm waters surrounding Christmas Island are a world-renowned destination for divers, who often encounter Whalesharks, the world s largest fish. These harmless plankton-feeding sharks can grow up to an impressive 18 metres in length, and divers are sometimes able to catch a short ride on the dorsal fin. Santa is shown approaching the island riding on a friendly whaleshark and escorted by Red-footed Booby birds. The distinctive limestone cliffs of Christmas Island are visible in the background. On shore, Santa distributes gifts to some of the island s ubiquitous Red Crabs. Red crabs are the dominant wildlife, with an extraordinary 120 million estimated to live on Christmas Island. The whaleshark swims back to sea and the red-footed booby birds are now carolling from a tree branch. Santa is seated on a Green Turtle, one of several turtle species found around the Christmas Island coastline. 25 Postmaster Gallery Seven Seas dd Month YYYY Exhibition diary Continuing exhibition Behind the Stamp continues to Sunday 30 November An exhibition looking at interesting background stories about Australian stamps. These include pioneering ventures such as the world s first instant stamps printed and distributed within a day to honour our Olympic gold medallists; controversies such as a simple kangaroo which replaced a dignified monarch s head on the first Australian Commonwealth stamps; and occasional mistakes by stamp artists, notably when the wrong man s portrait was featured on a 1947 commemorative stamp. Behind the Stamp offers a new perspective for those interested in Australia s stamps and their background. Opening in December Philately on Ice - Stamps of the Australian Antarctic Territory December to 29 February 2004 In 1957, during the Cold War, Australia issued the first Australian Antarctic Territory stamp. Its issue was part of a political strategy to validate a large part of Antarctica as Australian territory. There is now a significant scientific research emphasis to work being carried out across Antarctica. The stamps of the Australian Antarctic Territory tell a story of political aspirations, scientific endeavour and our growing appreciation of the fragile Antarctic environment.
