Section 4 Aviation Australia s History The beginning In 2001, the Queensland Government established Aviation Australia to support the growth and development of the aviation industry in Queensland. This decision was based on industry needing a skilled workforce to meet the challenges of the aviation industry in the immediate and future economic climates. In January 2002, Basic Maintenance Engineering training commenced with the first student intake. At this time, there was one building, one class and 21 staff. In 2003, the first major international client was secured through a contract signed with Dragon Air to deliver Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering training as part of Dragon Air s Engineer cadet program. To deliver this training, Aviation Australia was required to gain Part 147 accreditation from the Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department (HKCAD). Achieving this accreditation was a significant milestone in the growth of Aviation Australia and established the company in the international training market. By 2004, training delivery had been extended beyond the classroom to include an online delivery mode Positioning for future growth Aviation Australia s entry into the international training market brought a range of overseas customers seeking training outcomes recognised by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). In response, Aviation Australia sought and gained approval from EASA as the first Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineer training organisation outside of Europe. This was a major achievement for the company thereby allowing training opportunities to flow in from the aviation industry worldwide. Importantly, the company was now well positioned for further growth in the domestic market as the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) progressed through maintenance regulation harmonisation with EASA. New training products were added with the opening of the Cabin Crew Training Centre in 2006, and by 2008, Aviation Australia was offering English language training for aviation professionals. 8 Aviation Australia

2009 Global success From 2009, Aviation Australia s reputation as a major international training provider for Basic Aircraft Maintenance Engineering training and Flight Attendant training had grown such that students from all over the world were travelling to Brisbane to undertake aviation specific training. In 2011, Aviation Australia celebrated the company s 10 th anniversary with the then Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh. Since 2011, Aviation Australia has secured major international contracts delivering English and technical training to a number of Middle Eastern, Asia Pacific and domestic clients Training Achievements Provided training directly to over 2,200 students across basic and advanced Engineering training, Flight Attendant training, and English language training. 34 Queensland Apprentice of the year Rachel Dudok, a graduate of Aviation Australia s Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Avionics) was in 2012 awarded the Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year for Queensland and was also a finalist in the National Training Awards. Having now completed her apprenticeship with Qantas, Rachel has nationally and internationally recognised qualifications, and is employed as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. 32 Aviation Australia

Rachel Dudok Profile Having always had an interest in aviation, Rachel was introduced to the Australian Airforce Cadets by a friend when she first arrived in Australia at the age of 14 and hasn t looked back since. At school she had a natural aptitude for subjects such as mathematics, science and information technology, seeing her awarded numerous academic achievements. Rachel went on to pursue a Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering at university, but in her third year realised she wanted a career that was more hands-on. After attending a careers expo and speaking to some of Aviation Australia s staff she decided to change career paths commencing her Certificate IV in Aeroskills (Avionics) with Aviation Australia shortly after. Upon graduating from the course, Rachel was one of four students to be offered an apprenticeship with Qantas in Brisbane and having now completed her apprenticeship is working as a qualified Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with Qantas Base Maintenance. When asked about the most valuable lesson learned at Aviation Australia? The responsibility of being an aircraft maintenance engineer - you are held accountable for so many things and so many people s safety when flying. This is real. Your signature and the quality of your work ensures your work ethic and pride, while ensuring the safety of your passengers. A Trusted and Respected Training Partner 33

South Pacific Apprentice of the Year Aviation Australia and Hawker Pacific subsidiary, Australian Avionics, in 2012 celebrated another of their protégés being announced as the Aircraft Electronics Association s South Pacific Apprentice of the Year. Michael Elcoate, who was a second year avionics apprentice at the time, was honoured with the prestigious award making it the third year that an Australian Avionics apprentice has received the award. Furthermore, all three recipients of the award conducted their initial training with Aviation Australia at the Cairns Aviation Skills Centre. Mr Elkins, Australian Avionics Manager, said that Mr Elcoate s success was highlighted by the solid relationship that exists between Hawker Pacific and Aviation Australia. It s reflective of the way we re working with the local community and aviation school, employing new apprentices and training them, Mr Elkins said. I think that close partnership is paying dividends in the quality of apprentices that we are getting. Mr Chris Pigott, Cairns Business Manager agrees, Industry partnerships are a critical ingredient in our success. We work closely with our industry partners, like Hawker Pacific, and as a result, over 85 per cent of Aviation Australia s graduates are employed in the aviation industry, he said. 34 Aviation Australia

Michael Elcoate Profile Michael Elcoate has had an interest in aviation as long as he can remember and in 2012 he was named the Aircraft Electronics Association s South Pacific Apprentice of the Year. Mick is currently a third year avionics apprentice with Australian Avionics after completing his Certificate IV in Aeroskills at the Cairns Aviation Skills Centre. He says he chose this career as it combined his interest in aviation with his interest of electronics and engineering. Michael says all of the subjects he studied during the course were really applicable to his current role but his favourite part of the course was doing the practical electronic work. He said the instructors were great and were a constant source of support. When asked where he sees himself in 10 years time? I d like to think that I ll be licensed by then, with a few ratings under my belt. A Trusted and Respected Training Partner 35

Section 13 A Trusted Partner Our key partnerships Aviation Australia s high standing in the industry has allowed us to develop highly-valued partnerships with leading organisations. These links serve to exchange ideas and information, enhance our services and their delivery, as well as to provide our graduates with added opportunities for employment and/or further studies. The close link with industry ensures our training remains relevant and targeted at what industry needs from our graduates. Some examples of our key strategic partnerships are: Altara Group In 2012 Aviation Australia and Altara signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together to address the increasing demand for Flight Attendants in the aviation industry. As a result of this partnership, Aviation Australia graduates receive preference in the recruitment process for roles with Altara. Altara and Aviation Australia are working together to identify opportunities to provide enhanced solutions to airlines and other aviation organisations for the recruitment, training and provision of Cabin Crew as well as other operational roles. Altara is an aviation consulting, auditing, training and resources company with headquarters based in Melbourne. It currently employs over 750 Flight Attendants for Jetstar, Tiger Airways and China Southern Airlines with that number expected to increase to over 1,000 by the end of Hawker Pacific In June 2012 Aviation Australia and Hawker Pacific signed an MoU for a specialised training program at Cairns, intended to provide advanced practical expertise to aircraft maintenance engineering (AME) students graduating from Aviation Australia s International Diploma program. The program allows for students who have been undertaking training at the Aviation Australia Brisbane campus, to relocate to Cairns following two years of theoretical instruction, for an intensive 10 week program of practical experience with Hawker Pacific. This will facilitate the application of their newly acquired skills and knowledge at the world class Hawker Pacific maintenance facility at Cairns. This MoU was subsequently followed with a formal agreement signed in March 2013 to provide the specialised training program for the next five years. 36 Aviation Australia

Sarina Russo Institute Aviation Australia and Sarina Russo Institute have signed an MoU to jointly market packaged products of Aviation Australia and Sarina Russo Institute to international students. This agreement allows international students to package subjects provided by either organisation to their training programs. As an example, students who enrol in a Sarina Russo Institute Management or Business Diploma can add Aviation Australia s cabin crew training course to their enrolment. 40 Section 14 Aerospace Gateway to Industry Schools Program In 2012 Aviation Australia commenced management of the Aerospace Gateway to Industry Schools Program on behalf of Skills Queensland. The program was established in January 2004 as a partnership between the Queensland Government, Boeing Defence Australia Limited (formerly Boeing Australia Limited) and Aviation Australia to support the growth and development of an effective workforce for the aviation sector. The program facilitates engagement between Queensland secondary schools (government and nongovernment) engaging with aerospace industry partners, local aerospace entities, training institutions and universities to create pathways for students into Queensland s aerospace industry. It aims to provide opportunities for young people to be exposed to the industry through industry-school partnerships that incorporate mentoring, site tours and academic recognition. It is anticipated the Asia Pacific region will need a growing supply of professionals including pilots and maintainers over the mid to long term to meet the changing demands of the industry. While this is good news for those seeking a career in the aviation industry, it highlights the importance of attracting young people into careers with the aviation industry to avoid the possibility of a regional or even global shortage of airline professionals in the future. The program allows industry to showcase a truly global, technological, multifaceted environment where students from all backgrounds and disciplines can make a significant impact. The Aerospace Education Awards is the pinnacle event held each year to celebrate the achievements of students studying at Aerospace Gateway Schools. Aircraft Maintenance Engineering scholarships are available to Aerospace Gateway School students who demonstrate a passion for pursuing a career in avionics, mechanics or structures. In 2012, Aviation Australia and Boeing Defence Australia provided scholarships to Year 12 students to undertake further vocational or undergraduate studies at Aviation Australia. Below is a picture taken from the 2012 awards ceremony of the Minister and finalists at Parliament House. 38 Aviation Australia

Section 15 Working with the Community In 2012 Aviation Australia signed a corporate partner sponsorship with CareFlight Rescue to the value of $30,000. RACQ CareFlight Rescue provides a vital role in the communities of the southern Queensland region by providing rapid emergency air medical response to those in need. Aviation Australia staff selected CareFlight as an organisation they wished to support through the raising of funds to assist the challenging, life-saving work CareFlight performs. Having already established a close relationship through its training performed at Aviation Australia, this further charitable support has only strengthened CareFlight s relationship with Aviation Australia. Aviation Australia has agreed to support CareFlight Rescue in a variety of ways including: A cash donation from staff of $15,000 from staff payroll donations, regular barbecues at the Aviation Australia training facilities and other staff fundraising activities. Provision of a range of training facilities and services to CareFlight to reduce their cost of training. Providing CareFlight Rescue with facilities to hold fund-raising and networking events. For Christmas 2012, Aviation Australia chose to make a donation to CareFlight Rescue in lieu of paper cards, with the Aviation Australia Christmas e-card encouraging stakeholders to do the same. 42 MS Brissie to the Bay Ride Aviation Australia supports Multiple Sclerosis Queensland s fundraising efforts by entering a team of riders in the annual MS Brissie to the Bay Ride. The team cycles up to 100km proudly wearing the Aviation Australia colours. In 2012 the team collectively raised a substantial amount of money, contributing towards the fundraising target of $700,000 to help people in our community living with Multiple Sclerosis. Bridge to Brisbane Every year Aviation Australia participates in the Sunday Mail/ Suncorp Bridge to Brisbane helping to raise money for various worthwhile charities in and around Queensland was no different with a number of employees completing the 10km course to do their bit for charity. In 2012 the Sunday Mail/ Suncorp Bridge to Brisbane raised more than $550,000 and this year we hope to help them raise even more. 40 Aviation Australia

The annual Aviation Careers Expo is recognised as one of the major events within the aviation industry calendar. The Aviation Careers Expo brings together companies, government bodies, industry partners, education providers and non-profit organisations. The event offers a unique opportunity for students, graduates, teachers, parents and those seeking a career change to explore aviation and aerospace pathways attracting visitors with a genuine interest and passion for the aviation industry. 3,000 visitors offering a real aviation experience for attendees. 45 Section 16 Why Aviation Australia? The most crucial part of a career path is the skills and knowledge required, which is careful selection of the training course and the organisation to deliver it. The quality of the course, its content relevance and ultimately the recognition of the qualifications it offers, will determine the prospects for employment. The First Non- European EASA Part 147 Basic AME Training Provider To date, Aviation Australia has trained or supported the training of over 30,000 students from all over Australia and the world and for very good reasons. To begin with, our training facilities are remarkably unique. A fleet of fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, fully functional hangars, workshops and dedicated buildings as well as professional equipment, mean students experience the sort of hands-on situations that they will encounter in the real aviation world. Our extensive range of programs has real depth and content, with courses developed in line with the requirements and specifications of the industry. Learning options allow for flexibility with part-time and online options available for some courses. Courses are delivered by highly-qualified instructors who draw on many years of experience in their particular fields and whose knowledge is kept up-to-theminute through research, training and professional development. In addition, each class has a dedicated Mentor who is there to assist students to reach their full potential. Further support is provided through a Student Support Service that can assist in extra-curricular matters such as finances, accommodation and other support. The qualifications gained through Aviation Australia are nothing less than first-class. As a training organisation we re required to satisfy various accreditation requirements and as such our courses are designed specifically to meet national and international industry standards. As a consequence, Aviation Australia qualifications are recognised internationally with our graduates being in high demand. In particular, our Aircraft Maintenance Engineering courses are approved and recognised by both the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) for the purposes of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering licensing. Through a combination of close industry partnerships and the work of our Employment Services department, graduates enjoy countless advantages and prospects for employment. Our partnerships put graduates in the enviable position of being first in line for any upcoming jobs with those companies, while our Employment Services team offers students assistance in preparing for and gaining employment. Aviation Australia is proud to say that the vast majority of our successful graduates have gained employment, and as you can see by our apprentice of the year awards, industry agrees our quality of training is first rate. A Trusted and Respected Training Partner 43

Section 17 Strategic Directions In 2010, Aviation Australia undertook a substantial review of its strategic direction and developed a clear process that will guide the development of the company into the future. The outcomes of this process are captured in the company s Strategic Plan, which is reviewed and published annually. Integrity and partnerships Training innovation and quality Student success and employability Competitive sustainability Customer satisfaction Aviation Australia s strategic objectives are defined around the key themes of integrity and partnerships, training innovation and quality, student success and employability, competitive sustainability and customer satisfaction. The company s training agenda is embedded within each of these key themes and summarised in Section 4 of this document. Aviation Australia s strategic direction is further underpinned by a commitment to the directions and initiatives described within the Queensland Government s Skills Investment Plan and industry Sector Plans. Having established a firm base, Aviation Australia faces the future with a purposeful strategy which has an overriding focus on quality and an increasing international share in the delivery of aviation training. Over the next 10 years, Aviation Australia will continue to adapt to a new environment one dominated by globalisation, greater competition and advanced aircraft technologies and develop a sharpened focus on excellence in training and a responsive approach to the opportunities and challenges on offer. 44 Aviation Australia

By following this direction Aviation Australia will become a trusted and respected Aviation training provider by customers and stakeholders. The company will be recognised globally as a leading training centre of excellence, that is operating in an economically sustainable and socially responsible way. Aviation Australia s graduates achieve high levels of employment and product outcomes having trained in a corporate culture synonymous with quality, professionalism and industry expertise.
