Lisa Michl Chairperson A Word from the Executive Officer In 2009, UMI Arts continues its role in providing advocacy and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and cultural practitioners. Through participation in strategic developments such as the Commercial Code of Conduct, the Queensland Arts Industry Sector Development Plan for and the Far North Queensland Cultural Tourism Strategy UMI Arts aims to support and strengthen Indigenous cultures in FNQ. Janet Parfenovics In June, UMI Arts staged three major events, including an exhibition of our Exhibition Ready artists at the Dreaming Festival, management of the 2009 Cape York Art Award as part of the Laura Festival, and the launch of the inaugural UMI Arts Indigenous Markets on the Cairns Esplanade. In April, I was delighted to be invited to attend Desart s Indigenous Arts Centre Managers Conference in Alice Springs and we look forward to working with Arts Queensland over coming months to identify ways in which UMI Arts can engage more closely with Far North Queensland Indigenous arts programs and Arts Centres. UMI Arts sincerely acknowledges the continued support of our funding partners, the Australia Council, DEWHA and Arts Queensland. We also thank the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board for their grant towards the staging of our Big Talk One Fire cultural summit in November this year, and the Gambling and Community Benefit Fund for their grant for the purchase of our first and very own UMI Arts 4-wheel drive vehicle. I would like to formally farewell Earl Rosas. Earl was one of our first Development Officers. We thank Earl for his passion and support of UMI Arts. Earl left UMI Arts in April and we all wish him every success in his career move to Indigenous health. Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Madeleine Challender who has recently joined UMI Arts to work on a number of marketing and development initiatives over the next six months, including UMI Arts web site and other marketing initiatives and strategies. Janet Parfenovics Executive Officer Dreaming Festival...continued from front page the artists, and extend their professional practice to a new level. We were also able to showcase the arts and culture of the communities we have been working with. Many artists were able to make sales through the exhibition, which was another positive result, says Troy Dennis, UMI Arts Development Officer. There was no time for breathing once the show was set up. The team was constantly out on the floor promoting the artists and explaining UMI Arts role in Far North Queensland. There was a constant flow of people through the gallery, keen to hear about our activities and how the artists work. Everyone was impressed by the professionalism of the artists and the exhibition as a whole, says Troy Dennis. UMI Arts would like to thank The Dreaming Festival for the opportunity to participate in the event, and participating artists for their contribution of such high quality artworks. 2 Contact UMI Arts UMI Arts Ltd. We set out to bring a new element of professionalism to the event, yet maintain its spontaneity and inclusivity. It was wonderful to see such a high level of participation, covering the entire region. The performance and practice of Aboriginal dance and culture at the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival is a very important element in the preservation and continuance of the unique cultures of the region. UMI Arts congratulates all artists who took part in the exhibition, and supported the opportunity to promote and strengthen our Indigenous arts and culture. 4 News & Events Around the Region Hope Vale Arts & Cultural Centre Official Opening An interview between Madeleine Challender and Darryl Harris. UMI Arts Business Manager, Darryl Harris set off northwards from Cairns for a 4hr trip to Hope Vale and then on to Wujal Wujal. within the community. The opening of the Centre was an important milestone for the community, and UMI Arts was proud to be invited to the celebrations. What took you to Hope Vale? I was representing UMI Arts at the official opening of the Paddy McIvor Munarra Cultural Centre Building and the Nganthanun Bamawi Bayan Gallery. I was very proud to be invited to attend the ceremony, which took place on Friday, 28th April, What was your impression of the new centre? The Centre was very striking. It is a modern and inviting facility, which should encourage more artistic and cultural activities for the Centre. It is surrounded by well landscaped grounds, with beautiful big shady trees. It was pleasing to see the realisation of the long-term dream of the community. The previous Boards, and Alberta Hornsby, one of the founding members of the Centre, must be acknowledged for their vision. Credit must also be given to the current Board, and Chairperson Roy McIvor, who have followed the project through to completion. The community has had a hard struggle over several years working towards this goal. Can you tell us about the opening ceremony? Uncle Roy McIvor, Chairperson of the Centre and well-respected Elder, gave an inspiring speech at the opening. The event also showcased the local talent, and we were well-entertained by the Hope Vale Dancers. The Hope Vale Primary School students also had a special treat prepared of a song in language. Uncle Roy cut the ribbon, along with Shirley Costello and Jason O Brien officially opening the Centre, then we were all invited for a beautiful lunch and a tour of the facilities, which were showcasing the arts centre members. All-in-all, it was a very beautiful arts and cultural day! The Hope Vale Centre s workshop and outdoor spaces are an active place for community members of all ages to continue cultural practices and promote ongoing use of languages spoken Wujal Wujal Exhibition Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire s Arts and Cultural Centre is due to officially open in October 2009, however, local Aboriginal artists have already mounted an impressive series of works created with visiting artist Ross Franzi. UMI Arts Business Manager Darryl Harris was invited to visit Wujal Wujal, located south of Cooktown, to see the outcomes of the Artist-in-Residence workshops. Roy McIvor, Shirley Costello, Jason O Brien cutting ribbon Murray Upper and Beyond Hope Vale Launch Hope Vale Dancers Girringun Aboriginal Arts Centre launches its first exhibition. Murray Upper and Beyond, the first group exhibition of Girringun artists, took place in May at the Girringun Aboriginal Arts Centre in Cardwell. The exhibition included work of fifteen artists from between Clump Point and Cardwell and resulted from regular art workshops at the Arts Centre. Girringun artists carry on traditional practices, including lawyer cane weaving, and carving shields and wooden artefacts made from raw materials collected in traditional rainforest, wetland and coastal country. They also paint, make batik, linoprints and use other media to tell stories and reflect rainforest life and culture. In a white man s world, opportunities for Traditional people to express their feelings, concerns and issues are very limited. This potentially contributes to social problems for Aboriginal people. This is one reason why art is so important for our young people. They need ways to release their frustrations. Art provides a perfect medium and a culturally relevant form of expression. This in turn enhances our people s ability to deal with the world around them, says Girringun Executive Officer, Phil Rist. Ross Franzi was born in Melbourne, but now lives in Bloomfield. He is a professional international painter best known for his landscape and wildlife paintings. He worked with local artists to develop a series of works that have culminated in a vibrant exhibition. The artists have created inspiring work and are working towards the opening of their new Centre. Working with Ross has been a great step for them, inspiring their confidence and professional skills, says Darryl Harris. Once completed, the Wujal Wujal Arts and Cultural Centre will be a state-of-the-art facility to promote and support artists and 4 cultural development in the region. 5 Draft Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct The Australia Council for the Arts Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board has recently travelled around Australia seeking input on the Draft Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct. The code was a key recommendation of the 2007 Senate Inquiry report into the Indigenous visual arts and craft sector, which revealed unscrupulous and illegal commercial practices towards Indigenous artists. The development of the draft code has involved consultation with artists, art centres, communities, art dealers and regional authorities across Australia. The code aims to strengthen fair and ethical trade practices in the Indigenous visual arts industry by outlining a set of minimum standards for dealers, agents and artists, and defines terms of trade, rights and responsibilities for the sale and management of artworks. The draft code, fact sheets and discussion papers can be viewed at: draft_indigenous_art_code_of_conduct or phone the Australia Council on Gab Titui Cultural Centre partners with TAFE on new arts initiative Aspiring Torres Strait artists will be able to access skills development training in their home communities under a new partnership between Gab Titui Cultural Centre and Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE (TNQIT).
