1 YOU AND ME STRENGTHENING OUR ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER CULTURAL PRACTICES UMI ARTS NEWS : ISSUE 19, 2014 Annual Freshwater Saltwater exhibition on again Freshwater Saltwater 2014 presents works by 22 new, emerging, established and professional artists with selected pieces encompassing a wide range of mediums. This year s theme, Existence focuses on the life experiences of each artist and on pinnacle points in their lives, where the environment, experiences and upbringing are relived and reminisced in their works. The theme underpins the existence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture, Lore, traditions, heritage, values, and way of life that continues to be practised, traditionally and contemporarily. The exhibition features works by Agnes Mark, Arone Meeks, Cheryl Creed, Dave Daffey, Edna Ambrym, Gertrude Davis, Glen Mackie, Heather Koowootha, Kel Williams, Lisa Michl, Michelle Yeatman, Naseli Tamwoy, Nickeema Williams, Philomena Yeatman, Robert Tommy Pau, Nickeema Williams, Connections I, 2014, digital photograph Sharon Karami, Sharon Phineasa, Susan Kennedy, Toby Cedar, Tom Bosen, Vincent Babia and Wayne McGinness. Each year, Freshwater Saltwater exhibitions celebrate the rich artistic cultures of Far North Queensland s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and communities. The inaugural Freshwater Saltwater exhibition, Connecting to country was launched in August 2013 and showcased the works of 18 UMI Arts member artists. In early 2014 it toured to Adelaide s Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute and opened its 25th Anniversary program. It then travelled to the Foyer Gallery at Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art, Brisbane in partnership with Flying Arts Alliance. 2 A Word from the Chairperson Firstly I acknowledge my Father in Heaven for his guidance and direction in my life and secondly the opportunity His Son s teachings affords me as I continue to strive to improve the wellness, the position and the talents of our people through the arts. May I also acknowledge our Elders past and present; and the Gimuy Wulabarra Yidinji as traditional owners of country on which we operate; and other Traditional Owner s throughout the Cape York, Torres Strait and the Gulf and mainland communities within the scope of UMI work. Firstly I would like to welcome interim Directors Darryl Murgha and Marilyn Miller to the Board; and also welcome Lisa Michl to the role of Executive Services Officer of the company. May I touch on the issue of people s lack of understanding with observing particular cultural ethics and cultural protocols of our people whereby certain sacred objects, certain ceremonies, certain songs and certain dances which are closely linked to our people s past and cultural traditions are being blatantly misused by individuals, being misrepresented by the media and the perpetrators themselves are very misinformed about our sacred ceremonies and practices. These practices are deemed to be sacred and our people get thrust into doing things for the arts/galleries; and for money and notoriety without thinking of the impact this might have on UMI culture and traditions by mixing them in with contemporary settings. A wise old Aboriginal Elder described this practice when he said; Good work, no dreaming The sacred Meriam Kab Kar has significant importance in ceremonial dance and unique to this dance is the MERIAM DHOERI or feathered headdress of which each part has important meanings. The object is only made, handled and worn by Meriam males. Our Elders can tell which tribe the dancer is from just by looking at the style of the dhoeri or the cut in the feather. Today, some non- Indigenous people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have also begun to misrepresent the Dhoeri and portrayed same as tattoo s worn on the leg, on the arm and on the back; this is very inappropriate. Tag Mauki Mauki in Meriam basically means don t touch something that doesn t belong to you. The correct observation, clear understanding and practical application of UMI cultural protocols has come from humble beginnings and time immemorial and is built on having the deepest respect for sacred things. It has pride of place in traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lore and does not change but remains constant in an ever changing environment for the benefit of our children and our future generations. As we approach the mid-year, may I take this opportunity to thank our funding partners once again. Sincerely Leo Beizam Akee Chairperson A Word from the Executive Officer UMI Arts has continued to develop and grow strong. We have over 800 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members who have cultural connection to Far North Queensland. In addition, the support of UMI Arts Donors and Friends continues to be an important means of supporting UMI Arts as the peak Indigenous arts and cultural organisation for Far North Queensland. Since 2008, UMI Arts has strategically developed a framework of programs that supports, up-skills and showcases the breadth of Indigenous peoples as they journey along their pathways to success. As a lead-in to our annual Big Talk One Fire Indigenous Cultural Festival, we have delivered three cultural celebrations of song, through our new contemporary music program, UMI Soundz. This year, we have again partnered with Ministry for the Arts, Australia Council for the Arts and Arts Queensland to deliver our annual events including a curated group exhibition, Big Talk One Fire Festival, Music Industry workshop and Pop-Up Arts and Craft Markets. On 23 July, we look forward to welcoming the community to the launch of Freshwater Saltwater: Existence exhibition, which features 22 member artists promoting and highlighting art from the region. For UMI Arts and all of Cairns, the month of July is one of unprecedented activity as the city comes alive with an array of events including our own Big Talk One Fire Festival providing an afternoon and evening of celebration, music, dance, art, craft and culture. Together with our annual Freshwater Saltwater exhibition, we will showcase over 400 Indigenous artists and performers. In 2014, with the support of the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, we have continued to deliver our skills-based programs for artists in two Far North Queensland communities - Yarrabah and Northern Peninsular Area (Injinoo, Seisia, New Mapoon, Umagico and Bamaga). Artists in these communities will participate in their own Community Exhibition program. As part of the Yarrabah Community Exhibition program, UMI Arts partnered with the Yarrabah Arts Centre and the Yarrabah Council to deliver a Yarrabah Arts and Cultural day within the township of Yarrabah. This day was a successful trial into our Cultural Tourism Strategy that will provide future economic growth for the Yarrabah Community. The Northern Peninsula Area artists will also launch their group exhibition during the inaugural NPA Cultural Festival in October this year. I would like to pay my respect to the Directors and staff of UMI Arts whose commitment, energy and belief in the organisation is truly extra-ordinary. Jaivan s new position In March this year, UMI Arts was delighted to officially appoint Jaivan Bowen to a new position as our first ever Audio/Visual Technician. Jaivan began at UMI Arts in a voluntary position in 2012 whilst he completed his Certificate III in Arts Administration. He then became part of the team as an Indigenous Arts Worker, predominantly providing support to our Gallery Curator as well as support in our Retail Shop. This year, UMI Arts secured one-off funding from Screen Australia to employ Jaivan as our Audio/Visual Technician as well as funding to deliver accredited training to support his career goals. Over the coming year, Jaivan will complete his Certificate III in Media through Triple A Training in Brisbane (the Registered training arm of Brisbane Indigenous Media Association). Farewell and good luck Dawn Since the very early days of UMI Arts, Dawn Farrington has worked with the organisation as the company accountant. For over seven years, Dawn has provided much valued support and professional advice to the organisation. This year, Dawn has decided to take a different path and will no longer be the company accountant. We thank Dawn for her years of service and commitment to UMI Arts and wish her all the best for her future endeavours. UMI Arts trials Crowdfunding At the beginning of 2014, UMI Arts was selected as one of 17 leading independent arts organisations around Australia to be a part of Creative Partnerships Australia s new program. MATCH: Crowdfunding for the independent arts sector was a pilot program that facilitated new artistic works by matching funds via crowdfunding. UMI Arts ran three crowdfunding campaigns that supported UMI Arts members and our programs. Creative Partnerships Australia offered to match successful pledge amounts through the MATCH program, if each campaign was successful. UMI Arts very first venture into crowdfunding was on 6 May, with member Dez Green and his campaign Short Film: Dimension Man. Dez s goal was to raise funds for a short film that he had been creating for five years. On 5 June, with a lot of support, Dez reached his target and is currently in the process of making his film. Our second and third crowdfunding campaigns were launched at the start of June. The Let s film it Yarrabah campaign reached its goal with days to spare and enabled UMI Arts to document the journey of the Yarrabah Artists with the outcome of a DVD. Our final campaign Get the Kids on Stage was to support the annual Small Brother Small Sister showcase. Unfortunately it did not reach its target however, the support we received for this annual showcase, was encouraging. A very big thank you to all who donated for their support and the well wishes we received. Jaivan will complete much of his training on-line, utilising the new sound and visual facilities and equipment at UMI Arts that we acquired as part of our DETE training funding in 2013 and which includes a fully operational Sound and Visual Recording and Editing Studio. Congratulations, Jaivan on your new career path! Join UMI ARts on Social Media There are many ways that you can stay in touch with UMI Arts. 7 Training and Employment In 2013, UMI Arts partnered with Cairns based Registered Training Organisation (RTO), The Learning Workshop, to successfully secure funding to support its long-standing commitment to deliver accredited training to our members, staff and Board. Skills Industry Funding (SIF) was secured to deliver both Certificate IV in Business (Governance) to all UMI Arts Directors and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment for up to ten UMI Arts members and staff. In addition, UMI Arts also utilised Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) funding, through the Department of Education, Training and Employment, to provide learning support to training participants as well as its staff who are all undertaking Certificate III or Certificate IV in their respective career qualifications. UMI Arts made a significant contribution to the costs of delivering Accredited Training to its members, Directors and staff. This is a part of our longer term strategy to create Indigenous employment opportunities in the Creative Industries sector. Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) In October 2013, UMI Arts was pleased to offer members the opportunity to undertake Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) with funding received from Skills Industry Funding (SIF). Among other intended aims, this qualification equips Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander graduates with skills to work in the Vocational, Educational and Training (VET) sector. Certificate IV in Business (Governance) BSB41910 A major strength of UMI Arts is our all-indigenous Board of Directors, who all bring a range of knowledge, skills and experience to the organisation. Each Director values the special role they have in leading the organisation, whilst contributing to the Board, organisation and community through the fulfilment of their duties as Directors. Over the years, many of our Directors have sat on various boards however most held no statements of attendance or attainment for their years of experience. Certificate IV in Business- Governance was facilitated by The Learning Workshop, with Directors undertaking a series of recognised units of competency which would then see our current board qualified and able to deliver best practice around Board Governance. Board Governance training began in January 2013, with SIF and WELLs funding along with UMI Arts contribution. Directors completed their studies in December Proud Directors were awarded their certificates on 14 May at a special graduation dinner. UMI Arts is thrilled that we could apply for the 2014 Indigenous Governance Awards. The award judging panel now has the difficult task of selecting the shortlist and eight finalists and we are eagerly awaiting the announcement at the end of July TAE provides the essential skills required for training and assessment, including how to design and develop learning programs and use of training packages and accredited courses to meet client needs. From October 2013 to February this year, 6 participants successfully completed their Certificate IV and one member completed a skills set comprising three of the ten TAE units. This was a major accomplishment for each person and their hard work was celebrated and acknowledged in May at the special graduation dinner. Proud graduates with their certificates Diploma of Business (BSB5027) As part of UMI Arts intensive training program, Executive Officer, Darrell Harris, also completed his Diploma of Business, through Recognised Prior Learning (RPL) with The Learning Workshop. Darrell has many years of high level, relevant business and management experience however, like many of us Darrell had never received any formal qualifications.. Achievement of the qualification was a significant outcome for Darrell and for the organisation. Through Board and staff accredited training and qualifications, UMI Arts can now demonstrate it has skills and knowledge at nationally recognised levels. UMI ARTS CONTRACT STAFF UMI Arts has a strong team of contract staff that complement our permanent staff and provide crucial operational support. In addition to long-time employees, Janet Parfenovics and Guy Hancock who have transitioned to consultancy positions as they ve helped train Indigenous staff into full-time roles, we would like to introduce: Arone Meeks, Facilitator Arone is proud Kuku Midigi man who lives in Cairns. Now in its seventh year, this annual festival celebrates the whole of culture, including visual arts and crafts, dance, performance and music, primarily from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of Far North Queensland. This year the event is starting at 1pm, which means there will be an extra 3 hours of festivities to enjoy. An afternoon and evening of celebrations, with performances by Indigenous musicians including Zennith, Cold Water Band, Djun Djun Jarra, Danny Bani, Ivana Gibson, Nite Owls, SK Boiiz, Tamara Gibson, Troy, Trevelyn and Dean Brady, Mau Power and Warrigan Band. We are welcoming back Sean Choolburra this year to again MC the event. An important element of these celebrations is the art and craft stallholders. There will be over 25 Indigenous market stalls around Fogarty Park, where you can buy directly from the person who has made items for sale. Small Brother Small Sister is a youth engagement project and is a unique event that encourages leadership, cultural awareness and community building. It builds the capacity of children to take pride in their cultural background and helps them find their place in our diverse society. Small Brother Small Sister will be held on Wednesday 17 September, 2014 at the Cairns Civic Theatre. The schools involved in Small Brother Small Sister 2014 are Parramatta Primary School, Yarrabah Primary and Secondary Schools, Cairns West Primary, Cooktown Primary School and Woree Primary School. Once again this year s Small Brother Small Sister is being delivered in partnership with Regional Excellence in Arts and Culture Hubs (REACH). The Small Brother Small Sister showcase in 2014 is supported by the John Villiers Trust. This year, UMI Arts is proud to invite very special guests, ARIAaward winning band Coloured Stone to perform. Travelling north, lead performer and founder of Coloured Stone, Bunna Lawrie and the band will headline Big Talk One Fire, whilst simultaneously celebrating the band s 35th anniversary. We feel honored to be invited to perform at this year s Big Talk One Fire Indigenous Cultural Festival. It is a great event to be taking part in and an excellent way to celebrate Coloured Stone s 35th anniversary, explains Bunna Lawrie. Big Talk One Fire Indigenous Cultural Festival will also have traditional dancing by the ALLKUMO Malkatri Dance Team from Coen, Cape York. Coen has six surrounding clans on which the acronym ALLKUMO is founded. School students sharing their talent at the 2013 Small Brother Small Sister event. Visitors and Yarrabah artists in the Bulmba exhibition Yarrabah Arts and Cultural Day Alumni Artists Career Development The Career Development Program aims to further develop an artist s career through engagement with National Museums and Galleries throughout Australia to visualise, gain knowledge and to learn and understand the Gallery s operations, behind the scenes work and their collection. One of the most important aspects of a major gallery is their public collection and in particular their Indigenous collection. This program has been developed through the UMI Arts Alumni Program to support the Alumni Artists of UMI Arts. Heather Koowootha, Cheryl Creed, Teho Ropeyarn, Nickeema Williams and Bernard Singleton Jnr during their trip to Sydney Three UMI Arts members, Bernard Singleton Jnr, Heather Koowootha and Nickeema Williams accompanied by Supervisor and member Cheryl Creed attended a two-day intensive program introducing the operations of the National Gallery of Australia working with Kelli Cole, Assistant Curator of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art. There were also visits to the National Museum of Australia, Aboriginal Tent Embassy and a Sydney day tour where the artists visited the Museum of Contemporary Arts, College Of Fine Arts and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. 11

12 Curated Exhibitions Essence of the Eye - Curated photographic exhibition Thursday 3 April - 25 June 2014 Essence of the Eye was a UMI Arts curated exhibition featuring photographs by four Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander member artists; Elise Carr, Sharon Karami, Gertrude Davis and Nickeema Williams. The exhibition was launched alongside exhibitions by Dave Daffey, Arone Meeks and Toby Cedar on Thursday 15 May, This was the first time UMI Arts launched four exhibitions simultaneously. Curated by Gallery Curator, Teho Ropeyarn, photographic works featured in the exhibition explored many ideas and perceptions of cultural traditions, such as performances, country/land, sea and people and issues relating to identity and the environment. The concurrent themes and subjects in the works evoked powerful stories told through the Essence of the Eye. Essence of the Eye also featured as part of the Queensland Festival of Photography 5 Biennial, presented in partnership with the Queensland Centre of Photography during April this year. Each of the artists showcased 4-5 photographs installed in the McIvor Gallery. However, the entire exhibition showcased over forty works which were digitally projected in the McIvor Gallery. Exhibition Ready Program Exhibition Ready is a skills-based Program that is delivered at either UMI Arts or in remote communities by UMI Arts Indigenous Development Officers. Artists are accepted into the program through an application process. The program is based on continuous improvement with career outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from Far North Queensland. Current Sea Thursday 15 May 25 June, 2014 Professional artist Arone Meeks, a participant in the Exhibition Ready program, comes from the Kuku Midigi people of Cape York. Born in Laura, Cape York, Queensland, Arone Meeks is a professional, multidisciplinary artist whose works include paintings as well as printmaking and works on paper. Arone is an active artist who is based in Cairns and whose works are represented in major galleries in Australia, America and France. Current Sea featured works that explored issues affecting nature, people, place, culture and current issues that we, the public, see on television and around us. These are issues of division of people in places and countries, separation of people from place, people s desire for a better life in other countries, the effect of natural disasters around the world and the decimation of people and places from wars. Casuarina, Settlement Cove, by Sharon Karami Essence of the Eye exhibition Le op Dhari Thursday 15 May, June, 2014 Toby Cedar is a fine Torres Strait Islander headdress maker. His first solo exhibition, Le op Dhari featured totemic animals crafted into headdresses. The works were created in a reversed way, where the totemic being comes alive by being worn as the headdress and transforming the male dancer in the process. Toby s works depict a strong sense of cultural and contemporary aesthetic practices. His shark and warrior headdresses were recently acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Toby, together with his wife, own and operate the popular clothing and accessories company specialising in Torres Strait Islander products, CDA Bala Designs. Toby was born in Dampier, Western Australia. His father is from Darnley Island and his mother from St Pauls Community (Moa) in the Torres Strait Islands. Visitors At the Launch of Arone Meeks exhibition, Current Sea Pathways 5 Thursday 9 October - 26 November, 2014 UMI Arts annual Pathways Exhibition Ready Artists - Group exhibition opens on Thursday 9 October, Pathways 5 will present eight recent Exhibition Ready artists who have each held a solo exhibition at UMI Arts in the last six months. 13 Ngau Babun Ngulaig (My Father s knowledge) Thursday 15 May, June, 2014 Naseli Tamwoy was born in the community of Thursday Island, in the Torres Strait Islands. His identity and heritage comes from the Maluililgal people, Badu Island on his father s side. For Naseli, art in the Torres Strait is a form of storytelling about one s story or experience. All his artworks are inspired by his culture, stories, life experiences, family and community. Naseli experiments and uses different mediums to express his art, so that it captivates the audience whilst enriching their interest in the lives of Torres Strait Islanders. His art is about providing people with information which increases their understanding and knowledge of his ancestry. Naseli s first solo exhibition was inspired by his father, family, community and the Torres Strait Islands, because he wanted this particular theme to relate to what moulded him as a Torres Strait Islander and felt that this was appropriate. Naseli Tamwoy Creation of Culture Thursday 15 May, June, 2014 Painter and airbrush artist, Dave Daffey has traditional connection to the Eastern KuKu Yalanji people, Cape York, Queensland through his mother, the late Valmai Ogilvie, and is a Welshman on his father s side. Dave s artistic career spans more than twenty years. Creation of Culture was Dave s first solo exhibition and it showcased a selection of his earlier paintings as well as new works created especially for his first solo exhibition. Dave Daffey works with acrylic and oil paints and uses air brush techniques in many of his pieces to create a three-dimension feel and depth. Some of his paintings draw on inspiration from the Aboriginal way of life - creation stories, history (in particular the stolen generation), and teachings from Elders, Aboriginal Lore and order, food and hunting and gathering. A number of his paintings incorporate portraits of iconic Indigenous Australians who have played a major role in the advocacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs. No Permission, by Dave Daffey The Freedom From Within Thursday 15 May, June, 2014 Tom Bosen is a Cairns-based artist from Weipa, Western Cape York. Tom s traditional connections are with the Anguma Thimaree, Thanaqwithi clans, Weipa region and the Wagadagum Tribe from Mabuiag Island in the Torres Strait Islands. At the age of ten, Tom s cultural education began in New Mapoon, at the very tip of Cape York. It was here that he witnessed traditional Torres Strait carving by an Elder from Boigu Island, who was living at New Mapoon. Tom s solo exhibition titled The Freedom From Within featured eight large paintings reflecting his culture. The freedom to express and the freedom to educate the wider community about our Indigenous culture are expressed through his paintings. From an early age, Tom had the desire to be intrinsically immersed in his culture. Tom Bosen 13
