Indigenous Update NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK 27 th May 3 rd June The theme for NRW 2011 is Let s talk recognition. How you interpret it is entirely up to you. You might like to hold an event that recognises the important contributions that Indigenous Australians are making to your community. Or perhaps engage students, staff or friends more deeply in a conversation about the value of recognition and why it is of particular importance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Over the next couple of years recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our Constitution will be on the agenda as the Federal Government has indicated that there will be a referendum on it, on or before the next election. When people go to vote, we want them to feel confident and capable of making an informed decision. To do this it is important to start the conversation about the value of recognition for us all and why it is important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in particular. But recognition isn t just about the referendum, it s much broader, and has a lot to do with reconciliation. During NRW 2011 we re asking all Australians to think about the value of recognition, what it means to you personally and its importance to the nation. RECONCILIATION SOUTH AUSTRALIA Website for further information is The Northern Territory and Western Australia do not have their own official sites. Please use the National Reconciliation South Australian site for resources and information. NAIDOC WEEK 3rd to 10th July This year we will continue celebrating the culture, history and achievements of our Indigenous people during NAIDOC Week which will be held from 3-10 July. The 2011 National NAIDOC theme is about taking responsibility for our future. To control the change we need to plan and take action to make it happen. It s our future change: the next step is ours. For additional information please go to the NAIDOC webpage. NATIONAL NAIDOC POSTER COMPETITION The National NAIDOC Poster Competition is an opportunity for talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to have their artwork showcased across Australia as part of NAIDOC celebrations. Each year, Indigenous artists are invited to submit artwork(s) based on the national NAIDOC theme. The winning artwork chosen by the National NAIDOC Committee is reproduced on the NAIDOC poster, which is circulated nationwide to promote the week and the theme. The winning artist receives a prize of $5000 and national recognition and exposure, with their artwork displayed in schools, work places and community organisations across Australia. You can submit your entry online by completing the form found on the web page

3 Volume 4 Issue 1 Page 3 IDEAS TO CELEBRATE RECONCILIATION OR NAIDOC WEEK Using the Reconciliation Schools Education Pack, work with students on a particular theme in the lead up to Reconciliation Week, culminating in a presentation or competition. This could be in the form of visual art, an essay or speech, or a presentation in groups or as individuals. You can find copies of ReconciliationSA education packs on the ReconciliationSA web page. They re designed to be off the shelf resources and can be incorporated into a number of different topics (and across a number of different year levels so it could be a school wide event) Screen relevant DVDs and couple the screenings with in class discussions. Form a Reconciliation Week Committee or NAIDOC Week Committee (perhaps the SRC or equivalent) and have them come up with a student led initiative. Does your school have an Aboriginal flag that it flies? If not, you could lobby to have a separate flag pole erected to fly the flag permanently. We recommend that it be as tall as the flag pole for the Australian flag, and that the flag be as large. A really different project is the creation of an Aboriginal cultural garden. This can be a really special project involving many year levels, and will be a lasting symbol of Reconciliation or NAIDOC Week. Invite an Indigenous Elder or performance group to an assembly during Reconciliation Week or NAIDOC Week. They can perform a traditional Welcome to Country, tell some stories and teach the students some songs/dances. Thought about getting the parents involved? If so, you could have a movie screening evening, and a discussion about how the parents could play a role in the Reconciliation process. Organise a Reconciliation Walk around your local community, stopping at significant sites ABORIGINAL STUDENT PATHWAYS CONFERENCE MY FUTURE MY WAY Conference for students in years 10 to 12. KEYNOTE SPEAKER- Corey Warrior Corey Warrior is a Narungga man who graduated as a secondary teacher in Corey has combined his love of travel, sport and teaching to work in three continents of the world; North America, Europe and Australia.
