2 AMAZING TREE QUEST 2015 WINNERS Rivers West Red River Corridor in partnership with the Manitoba Forestry Association (MFA) hosted the Amazing Tree Quest from May 30 to September 7, The Amazing Tree Quest is a contest that encourages the public to find trees along the Red River Corridor that are big, old, striking, or a community favourite, then, to nominate them. The trees are then reviewed by judges who categorize and rank the trees. This year, four winners will receive gift certificates to a garden center of their choice. The goal of the Amazing Tree Quest is to address and preserve trees as an integral part of our nature s ecosystem, to increase awareness and educate people on the role trees play in Manitoba s natural and cultural history, to encourage people in an initiative that promotes physical activity, and to promote the Red River Corridor as a destination. We are pleased to announce the four winners of the 2015 Amazing Tree Quest: 1 st place - Royal Manitoba Yacht Club Submitted by: Damara Geddes Recreation Director for the RM of West St. Paul Type of tree: Elm Location: West St. Paul This tree is one of the oldest in this area of West St. Paul. It is situated within the ground of the Royal Manitoba Yacht Club and both the members of the club and the general public enjoy its beauty and shade. 2 nd place - Beloved Oak Tree Submitted by: Evergreen Gate Bed and Breakfast Type of tree: Oak Location: St. Andrews How old? How tall? We don t know and don t plan to cut it down to find out! 3 rd place - L arbre de l amitié (Friendship Tree) Submitted by: Marie Federkevic and family Type of tree: Manitoba Maple Location: St. Boniface It looks old it may have been planted in the 30s. We hope that it will live a long time as it brings us much pleasure and happiness! Thanks to this tree, and the swing hanging from its branch, we have met many of our neighbours (big and small), which some have become our friends. 4 th place - Splitting Tree Submitted by: Krystèle Collette Type of tree: Oak Location: Lorette This is a beautiful tree. I love this tree because it splits off, it s like two trees in one!
3 CORRIDOR SIGNAGE STRATEGY Rivers West continues to work with communities along the Red River Corridor to proceed with the implementation of community trailheads and maps: Lockport - Once the images to represent the historical points of the community have been received, the map will be sent to the community for approval. Ste. Agathe - Once the images to represent the historical points of the community have been received, the map will be sent to the community for approval. The location of the trailhead is being determined. Ile-des-Chênes - Once the images to represent the historical points of the community have been received, the map will be sent to the community for approval. The location of the trailhead is being determined. St. Adolphe - Once the images to represent the historical points of the community have been received, the map will be sent to the community for approval. The location of the trailhead is being determined. Town of Morris - The map is complete. The text for the historical points and must-dos is being composed. We encourage all RMs and Towns along the Red River Corridor to partake in this initiative. For more information, take a look at the Signage Strategy Document or contact Sylvie Fouasse at ext. 108 or info@riverswest.ca. CITY OF SELKIRK RECREATION SURVEY Take the City of Selkirk Recreation Survey and share your ideas on how Selkirk can improve and expand its recreation facilities, services and programs. Whether it s art classes, yoga classes, fishing, or golf, recreation and leisure services make the community a better place to live, visit, work, and play. The survey is open to residents of Selkirk and the surrounding region and it will be open until October 2nd. ST. JEAN BRIDGE It s been about two and a half years since the bridge over the Red River in the town of St. Jean came down. Since, people east of the river are having to travel to Morris or Dominion City to be able to reach St. Jean-Baptiste, the traffic in the town has drastically decreased. The recreation facilities, the school, and the local businesses have been suffering. The town of St. Jean had a meeting with the Province to discuss these issues. Read more about this story in an article by Cory Knutt in Pembina Valley online.
4 VOTE MANITOBA STAMPEDE GRANDSTAND RESTORATION The Aviva Community Fund Competition Returns and the MB Stampede Grandstand Restoration needs your votes! This restoration would make the rodeo experience exponentially more enjoyable for visitors each year, and also help to draw in new faces who may have heard about the newly renovated seating or have seen the freshly painted grandstand on their drive through town. But more than that, it will restore community pride in this historical structure and allow us to carry on the tradition of the Manitoba Stampede. To vote visit avivacommunityfund.org.
