4 1. OFFICIAL INVITATION FOR THE CONGRESS Dr. J. W. Rogers, Jr. President of IUVSTA Attn: Dr. Ron Reid Dear Dr. Rogers: December It is my pleasure to propose on behalf of Korean Vacuum Society (KVS) to host IVC-20 in Six years ago, KVS unsuccessfully competed with China for IVC-18. In September 2006 KVS hosted ECM-100 along with an IUVSTA-sponsored international conference in Seoul. Established in 1991, KVS steadily grew up to a society with about 1500 members and 6 divisions. It hosts or sponsors on the average 1~2 international conferences a year. With much experience, KVS feels confident in hosting IVC-20. Thanks to the many vacuum-related big industries, most notably semiconductor device and display panel manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Hynix etc., Korea has many researchers working in the all fields represented by the 8 divisions of IUVSTA, and they have been actively participating in IVC. If IVC-20 is held in Korea, it will undoubtedly contribute to promote vacuum science and technology in Korea as well as in other Asian countries. Korea has a 5000-year history, a beautiful peninsular with an elegant and unique oriental culture with ethics and values inherited from Confucianism, Buddhism, and Christianity. Seoul, the proposed venue, is a dynamic city full of amaze. We are sure that all Congress attendees will enjoy their visit to Korea. KVS sincerely looks forward to hosting IVC-20 in Korea. 5 2. THE KOREAN VACUUM SOCIETY 2.1. Introduction The Korean Vacuum Society (KVS), established in 1991 and a member society of IUVSTA, is a nonprofit organization which promotes communication, dissemination of knowledge, recommended practices, research, and education in the use of vacuum and other controlled environments to develop new materials, process technology, devices, and related understanding of material properties for the betterment of humanity. The KVS is comprised of 6 technical divisions and about 2,000 members nationwide. The Society provides national meetings, quarterly divisional symposia, joint workshops with Japan and China, short courses, and educational outreach. Date of Establishment: September 10, 1991 National Society Activities: with more than 2,000 members nationwide, KVS is the only national member of IUVSTA in Korea. It publishes the science journal with the ISSN, and its members yearly have contributed more than 100 theses to the international journals. 13 5. Information on KOREA 5.1. Description of Korea Korea with 5000-year history is known as one of the most dynamically developing countries over the past several decades in the world. The Korea Peninsula extends southward from the northeast part of the Asian continent between China and Japan. The standard meridian of the peninsula is 135, nine hours ahead of GMT. Since 1945, as a by-product of the Cold War, the peninsula has been divided at 38 North Latitude into the capitalist Republic of Korea and the communist Democratic People s Republic of Korea, more commonly known as North Korea. Korea lies in the temperate zone and has four distinct seasons. In late March or early April, the trees burst into leafy splendor to mark the beginning of spring. Mostly sunny days can be expected from March to May. During the relatively hot a rainy summer season, the vegetation is green and lush. The average temperature in June is over 20C (68F). The monsoon rains usually begin at the end of June and last until mid- to late July. The coming of autumn in late September brings continental winds and clear, dry weather, making the fall months the most pleasant time of year. The vivid gold and vibrant reds of the changing leaves create a colorful panorama. December to February is cold and dry with occasional rain or snow. During the winter months, three or four days of cold weather are usually followed by a few warmer days. Koreans, like many other Asian peoples, are descendants of Mongolian Tungus. They differ from the neighboring Chinese and Japanese, however, in that Koreans are a homogeneous ethnic group with their own language, culture, and customs. The capital city is Seoul, which is the political, cultural, commercial, financial, and educational center of Korea. Korea houses 6 metropolitan cities and 9 provinces.

14 year Cultural Heritage Korea is an exotic and beautiful nation with a 5000-year old heritage. Over span of two millennia, the Korean people have developed several characteristics that are unique to a peninsula nation and tend to conform to its topographical features. The oceanic forces and the continental powers are joined on the peninsula to form the basis of the Korean character that underlies the foundation of the nation's history, culture and the arts. Koreans generally seek balance and harmony in nature and man, and love peace. Like its rising mountains and deep rivers, they are at once peace-loving and dynamic, and compassionate and diligent. Korean culture has blossomed throughout its long history, quite different from other Asian countries. UNESCO has added five Korean sites to its World Heritage List: Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, Jongmyo (Royal Ancestors Shrine), Tripitaka Koreana (the collection of Buddhist scriptures carved on more than 80,000 wooden printing blocks) at Haeinsa Temple, and Changdeokgung Palace.

15 5.3. Entry Visa Any foreign visitor wishing to enter the Republic of Korea must have a valid passport. Visitors with confirmed outbound tickets may stay in Korea up to 30 days without visas; exceptions to this apply to: Citizens from Cambodia, China, India, Iran, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Palestine, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam in Asia-Nigeria and Ghana in Africa-Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, and Macedonia in Europe-Cuba in the Americas. However, visa-free, stopover entry is permitted for 30-day passengers who have been issued US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand or Japanese visas. Visitors who plan to stay in Korea for longer than 30 days must obtain visas before coming to Korea Local Transportation Domestic airlines link 14 major cities of Korea. Korea s extensive railroad network covers most of the country. Metro systems in Seoul, Busan and Daegu are very convenient, efficient and easy for foreign travelers to use. Express bus service is extensive and extremely frequent. Taxis are plentiful. Shuttle buses operate frequently between hotels and the conference site and are relatively inexpensive almost everywhere in Korea Currency Korea s monetary unit is the Won, which is easily exchanged for US dollars, Euro, and Japanese yen, as well as other foreign currencies at banks and major tourist hotels. The basic rate of exchange, subject to change by fluctuation in the market, was about 1,200 won for one US dollar in Korea s currency comes in 1,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 won bills, and in 10, 50, 100 and 500 won coins.

16 6. HOW TO GET TO KOREA AND SEOUL Korea can be reached from just about every major capital in the world, either through direct flights or by connecting flights at any major East Asian cities. Korea has four international airports: Incheon International Airport, which is the main international gateway to Korea, Gimhae International Airport in Busan, Daegu International Airport in Daegu, Jeju International Airport in Jeju Island. Most major international airlines provide regular flight services, with more than 800 flights per week between Incheon and the major cities all over the world. Korea has also established international sea routes to Japan, China, and Russia. Busan and Incheon are the main international seaports to Korea. Seoul/Incheon International Airport The Incheon International Airport (IIA), opened in March 2001, is designed to accommodate the huge projected rise in Northeast Asian air traffic and acts as a catalyst to spur industrial development on its doorstep and the greater Incheon region. The result is a new transportation and commercial hub in the making, both facilitating and encouraging the flow of new, foreign businesses into Korea.

17 Seoul/Incheon International Airport to COEX Coex can be reached directly by Limousine bus from Seoul/Incheon International Airport. It takes about one and half hours depending on traffic conditions.

18 7. CONGRESS FACILITIES 7.1. COEX An outstanding convention and exhibition designated, Coex has a lot to offer: People from around the world visit the Coex Complex of 400,000m² for business, entertainment, leisure and cultural experiences. Come and see the largest underground mall in Asia, Coex Mall, with the Aquarium, CoexArtium, over 100 restaurants and the Kimchi Museum. After a long day, just relax in our garden by the Piano Fountain, in Asem Garden or visit Bongeun temple, a Buddhist temple right across the street from Coex.

19 Conference Rooms: Many rooms with different sizes are available. The Conference Room South is the most popular meeting facility at Coex. Specially designed for conferences, the 27 rooms of the 3rd floor Conference Center can accommodate a wide range of events: From small boardroom meetings to seminars for up to 300 people. Six large conference rooms and 21 medium and small-sized conference rooms allow for various combinations within close proximity to each other, allowing your guests to easily find their intended location. The rooms can be partitioned into 48 smaller conference rooms to further assist with flexibility of arrangements.

20 Specifications of Third Floor Meeting Rooms 7.2 Seoul National University As a leading university in Korea, the university provides spacious meeting and lecture facilities for Short Courses during the Congress. More than 10 classrooms or seminar rooms are available in the building of College of Engineering and other buildings at the campus. Campus can be reached by subway line number 2 easily. It takes only less than 30 minutes by subway.
