2 ABOUT CANSO CANSO the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation is the global voice of air traffic management (ATM) worldwide. CANSO Members support over 85% of world air traffic. Members share information and develop new policies, with the ultimate aim of improving air navigation services (ANS) on the ground and in the air. CANSO represents its Members views to a wide range of aviation stakeholders, including the International Civil Aviation Organization, where it has official Observer status. CANSO has an extensive network of Associate Members drawn from across the aviation industry. canso.org CANSO is the organising body for the CANSO Global ATM Summit and 20 th Annual General Meeting. ABOUT NAV CANADA NAV CANADA is the country s private sector civil air navigation services provider. With operations from coast to coast to coast, NAV CANADA provides air traffic control, flight information, weather briefings, aeronautical information services, airport advisory services and electronic aids to navigation. The Company manages some 12 million aircraft movements in 18 million square kilometres of airspace stretching from the Pacific West coast to the East coast of Newfoundland and out to the centre of the North Atlantic, the world s busiest oceanic airspace with some 1,200 flights crossings to Europe daily. As a private company, NAV CANADA revenues come from our aviation customers. By investing in technology and managing costs, customer rates have remained stable for more than a decade, while improving safety and flight efficiency. A rate reduction to customers was recently proposed early in NAVCANatm, a subsidiary of the Company, offers integrated technology tools for tower, terminal, enroute and airport air traffic management to other air navigation service providers across the globe for efficient and cost effective air traffic management. NAV CANADA s most recent technology investment is through our partnership in the Aireon joint venture with Iridium Communications Inc., the IAA (Ireland), ENAV (Italy), and Naviair (Denmark) to deliver the first-ever space-based global aviation surveillance system in In addition to being a partner in the joint venture, NAV CANADA has also signed on as Aireon s first customer, starting with the busy North Atlantic airspace. navcanada.ca NAV CANADA is the host of the CANSO Global ATM Summit and 20 th Annual General Meeting.

6 WELCOME FOREWORD BY JEFF POOLE, DIRECTOR GENERAL, CANSO Dear CANSO Members, Dear guests, Welcome to the CANSO Global ATM Summit and 20 th Annual General Meeting (AGM). The theme of this year s Summit is Rising to the Challenge of ATM: Leading, Integrating, Implementing. We have an interesting, thought-provoking, and varied programme, combined with an exciting social programme that gives plenty of opportunities to network and catch up with old friends. Vision 2020 is CANSO s strategic framework for the ATM industry. One of its three core pillars is Partnership. I am therefore delighted that our key partners will play a full part in the Summit. We are honoured that the ICAO Secretary General, Dr. Fang Liu, will provide a keynote speech in the Opening Session of the Global ATM Summit. We have a strong Leadership Panel comprising the ICAO Secretary General, the CANSO Chair (Paul Riemens) and senior representatives from our key industry partners ACI, IATA and IFATCA. Another pillar of Vision 2020 is Value. Several sessions highlight how CANSO is providing value for its Members. One session looks at how the industry is implementing airport collaborative decision-making (A-CDM) and the lessons learned thus far; another explores how the guidance and structures recommended by CANSO are helping ANSPs to implement systems to improve safety; and we will examine the processes by which ANSPs acquire new equipment and discuss how we can make these processes more efficient and cost-effective. The various business models of ANSPs are a topic of continuing interest to members so I am delighted that the CEO of ENAV, Roberta Neri, will share her very topical and unique experiences on privatisation through an IPO. We will also be looking at some of the challenges for ATM posed by new entrants to airspace. Google will brief us on Project Loon, a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to connect people to the internet in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters. Airways New Zealand will then share its experiences in guiding NASA s scientific research balloon through controlled airspace. Another pillar of Vision 2020 is Organisation. The Annual General Meeting gives CANSO Members the opportunity to make decisions that affect the way that CANSO operates on their behalf. This year we will be making important decisions about changes to membership policy following a wide consultation with Members. I am sure that we will all have an exciting and worthwhile week in Vancouver. I would like to thank our host, NAV CANADA, for its strong support and commitment in making it all possible. Jeff Poole Director General CANSO 4 Rising to the Challenge of ATM: Leading, Integrating, Implementing

7 A MESSAGE FROM NEIL WILSON, PRESIDENT AND CEO, NAV CANADA On behalf of NAV CANADA, I am happy to welcome you to the 2016 CANSO Global ATM Summit and 20 th Annual General Meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. We are proud to be marking our 20 th anniversary as owner and operator of Canada s civil air navigation service by hosting this important event in one of Canada s largest and most lively cities. Situated between the Coast Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver is known for its stunning scenery, temperate climate and rich diversity. During your stay, we look forward to introducing you to Vancouver, starting with a birds-eye view of this unique and vibrant city, at the Welcome Reception on Monday evening, and following it with more culinary delights at the Gala Dinner on Tuesday evening. Every year, some 20 million people visit Canada for business or for leisure, and air is the most popular travel mode of choice, making aviation a critical sector and a business imperative. At NAV CANADA, we are dedicated to providing excellent service to our customers and to maintaining our strong safety and performance record by building on our strengths, our people, and our technology. As partners in Aireon, we are excited about the possibilities to enhance safety, offer operational flexibility and deliver fuel savings using space-based ADS-B. The theme of this year s Global ATM Summit, Rising to the Challenge of ATM, offers all CANSO members the opportunity to exchange ideas that have the ability to transform global ATM performance. The sustainability and advancement of global air navigation services depends on strong connections, collaboration and partnerships. By providing a valuable forum for sharing ideas, insights and best practices, CANSO plays an important role in maintaining these connections within the global ANSP community. I hope that you enjoy the discussions, and I wish you all a productive Summit and a memorable visit to Canada.
