2 Adult Programs Lectures Friday, July 12 Artist s Perspective: Jack Spencer: Beyond the Surface Presented by Jack Spencer Thursday, July 18 Lecture: On the Sunny Side of the Street : Escapism in the Soundtrack of the Art Deco Movement Thursday, September 12 Lecture: What s in a Name? Art Deco s Emergence and Reemergence in the United States Frist Center Auditorium In this lecture, artist Jack Spencer discusses his interest in myth, mystery, and the ephemeral nature of existence beyond the surface. A resident of Nashville whose work has been exhibited and collected internationally, Spencer alters the surfaces of his photographs with techniques suggestive of painting to create images with rich tones and colors, softly-focused or veiled forms, and traces of the artist s hand, as seen in imperfections, marks, and painterly textures. Presented by Robert Fry, senior lecturer in music history and literature, Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University Frist Center Auditorium The Art Deco movement, embodied in our exhibition Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, coincided with the birth of modern popular music and the development of the recording industry. The newly formed recording industry, like the emerging film and broadcasting industries, provided powerful and much needed escape during the Depression era. Through an analysis of the sounds and images associated with the popular music of the era, this presentation gives insight into the soundtrack of the Art Deco movement and illustrates the importance of both sonic and visual escapes from the harsh realities of the 1930s. Presented by Tom Mellins, independent curator and author Frist Center Auditorium Tom Mellins, a Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles catalogue contributor, explores the origins of the twentieth-century visual style known as Art Deco and traces its American development, including the role of both museums and department stores in disseminating a look that was applied to everything from skyscrapers to toasters. He examines the varied responses of critics and historians over time, as well as the style s enduring popularity with the public a phenomenon that continues to this day. Lectures, films, tours, and performances are free for Frist Center members, or with purchase of gallery admission. To become a member, call our Membership Department at , or visit our website at Gallery Talks Thursday, July 25 Curator s Tour: Presented by Mark Scala Meet at exhibition entrance Courtesy of James Duncan Creative Chief Curator Mark Scala leads a tour of the exhibition.
