FROM YOUR COMMITTEE: A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT City and Inner West is the new name of the former Inner West Region of Sydney U3A. This recognises that your committee runs courses in the Sydney City Council area as well as those in the council areas of Inner West, Canterbury Bankstown, Canada Bay, and beyond. City and Inner West now conducts courses in 24 locations as well as in private homes. REPORTS: FRIDAY MORNINGS AT LEICHHARDT LIBRARY Presenter, Les Miller at age 23 (around 50 years ago) travelled to Antarctica on the Nella Dan as a Radio Technician with a Scientific team from Australia. His adventures over a period of 15 months took him to some remote areas, flying in conditions most of us would label scary. These couple of pictures to prove how challenging Antarctica can be for small aircraft (1) and of the inquisitiveness of the penguin population (2). 1

FRIDAY AT THE LIBRARY: Former Judge, Malcolm Robinson continues his talks on Crime, Punishment and Civil Disputes in Colonial NSW. This is a five week course which began 20 April. A relaxed Malcolm Robertson presides over lunch at one of our Leaders Thank You luncheons. 2

PASSIONATE TRAVELLERS A new monthly course begins on 4 July 2018 at the Harry Jensen Centre, Millers Point. Each month the talk will be a different country. The first country presented will be America led by Robin Amos. The August talk will be on Japan, led by Takiko Yalechev and Bobbie Kersten. This is an opportunity to share, to be enthused or simply just enjoy listening to various travellers tales and asking questions. We look forward to seeing you and hearing your stories too! Details will be in the Semester 2 Coursebook. 4 ART & ABOUT! From the Editor: Helen Biddle s group: 16 members joined Visiting Regional Galleries, lunching at the National Trust café, then viewing the S.H.Ervin Gallery s Intrepid Women. This exhibition showed Australian artists living in and painting in Paris in the early 1900s. After, there was a talk by Dr Melissa Boyd on the life of Moya Dyring. Thank you to the Committee who have given me the opportunity to create the Sydney U3a City & Inner West Newsletter. Thank you to Ron Shapiro, Bobbie Kersten & Barbara Burton for their invaluable support with this first edition! I would also like to acknowledge Sydney Srinivas for his work in producing the Newsletter since Ronda Gaffey Lake Macquarie Trip - Bobbie Kersten s group: photo of 24 members at the Toronto Railway Station listening to an interesting talk about the historic station, surrounding area and the historic Toronto Hotel where members had lunch on the verandah overlooking Lake Macquarie while while some members enjoyed a picnic by the lake. 4

The group meet each Thursday (except shool holidays) when there is lots of practice in reading and speaking English in a small, relaxed and friendly environment. FAST FACTS - DID YOU KNOW?
