THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS A STERLING SCORE FOR SEPTEMBER Punctuality for the last three months has topped the charts for Metro s best ever monthly results on record. CEO, Andrew Lezala, said during September we ran 99 % of services at 93.58% on time a terrific achievement. The September punctuality result is the second best in Metro s history, contributing to our run of great performance, Andrew said. In fact, our on -time running achievements from the last three months make up our top three best ever punctuality results with the June 2013 results sitting in a close fifth place. Equally as impressive, over the past two months we ve also exceeded 99% delivery. Of the 61,413 services scheduled last month, we only had 0.7% full cancellations, which is a great effort considering some of the daily challenges we face on the network. Though results like these are a true example of excellent teamwork, I d like to make a specific mention of the Clifton Hill Group s outstanding monthly Customers can begin catching trains at the new West Footscray Station on Monday 14 October Read more on page 3. performance results. The most consistent of the five operating groups, last month the Clifton Hill Group ran 99.56% of services at 96.17% on time. The bar has been set high for the performance improvement teams that have now been embedded in to each of the five operating groups, but I m confident we will continue see great improvements across all areas of the network. Continued on page 2 Page 1

Grinding away for a more comfortable journey Last week, CEO Andrew Lezala joined Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder and Deputy Premier and Member for Gippsland South Peter Ryan at Appleton Dock to welcome our new $13 million rail grinding machine. The newest piece of equipment to join the Metro fleet will first be used to re-profile steel rail on the Traralgon to Bairnsdale line. This will enable V/Line s passenger trains to resume operation for the benefit of more than 10,000 regional passengers per month. Following the urgent works on the V/Line network, the rail grinder will be used to re-profile and grind out minor rail defects, increasing longevity of the tracks across our own 15 train lines. The re-profiling, which shaves back the rail head, works to create an improved connection between the rail and train wheels and in turn, help to provide a more comfortable and reliable service for our customers. Another month of excellent performance From page 1 We have a big month ahead with a number of major maintenance and renewals works being completed along with the continuation of the RRL Project. I look forward to continuing our m o m e n t u m f o r t e r r i f i c performance. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing hard work and dedication to achieving outstanding results and improving the customer experience. Page 2

Opening up in the West The concourse at the rebuilt West Footscray station opened to the public late last Wednesday with the new station preparing to welcome customers from the first service on Monday 14 October. West Footscray Station first opened on 1 October 1888, and the new station, which has been rebuilt 160 metres west of the old one, will open almost 125 years later to the day. T o c e l e b r a t e t h e commencement of new station operations, a coffee morning and sausage sizzle will be held on Monday 14 October from 6am. Authorised Officers will be on site for the five weekdays after the station begins operating to assist customers; however as with the old station, the rebuilt station will not be staffed. Protective Services Officers will be at West Footscray from 6pm to midnight from 14 October. The old station s buildings and footbridge that were reconstructed in 1976 will be demolished over the next few days to make way for Regional Rail Link tracks. West Footscray Station is a major deliverable of the Regional Rail Link project's Footscray-Deer Park section, completed well ahead of schedule. Work began in June 2012 with construction of the new car parks on both the northern and southern sides of the station. Construction of the concourse, building and platforms began in November Ongoing construction work is planned for the precinct until late Featuring vibrant green design elements, the new station is a boon for the West Footscray community, complementing new residential developments altering the suburb's industrial face. Regional Rail Link has future-proofed the rebuilt station for patronage growth by providing facilities for station staff on the concourse. The concourse has been designed to cater for both pedestrians and cyclists and is five metres wide for this reason. There are several pedestrian and cycling enhancements to improve accessibility, safety, connectivity and amenity for the station precinct. Page 3

Customer feedback at Clifton Hill We re listening: Mick Potts, Rolling Stock Program Manager at Victoria Park Station. Customers at Clifton Hill and Jolimont have returned a solid 6.83 for customer satisfaction during this morning's bright and sunny Customer Interaction. During the four Interactions completed over the past eight weeks from Box Hill to Frankston to Clifton Hill, customer satisfaction ratings have been very stable between 6.74 and 6.97 reflecting a stability in our performance. More importantly, the Net Promotor Score for the Clifton Hill line section was +12 which demonstrates considerably more customers are willing to promote Metro as a preferred travel choice. Thanks to Shane Keating from Network Planning & Development, Laurie Lacorcia from HSEQ, Mick Potts from Rolling Stock, Paul M e v e l f r o m P e r f o r m a n c e Improvement and Brad Voss from Customer Services for undertaking the 17 th Customer Interaction. In the spotlight with a new simulator This week a news crew attended a driver simulator training session at Flinders St Station to promote the new, innovative way of introducing our drivers to new sections of track constructed in the RRL Project. To date, more than 500 drivers have used the facility for training on new sections of track. The simulator involves the use of graphics, track diagrams and high definition footage, which is then rendered into a computergenerated graphic animation including signals and track, and is a direct replica of the real track. It also allows for a multitude of scenarios such as rain, glare, wind and obstructions on the track. Page 4

Metro Best in Show Just stopping by: Several surprise visitors dropped past to say g'day, none more famous than our very own State Premier, Dr. Denis Napthine. To further promote the customer experience, Metro together with V/Line and Regional Rail Link, manned a stall at the Royal Melbourne Show. Over the twelve day period, thousands of show patrons attended the stall to be provided with information on the progress of RRL and the upcoming line closure that occurs straight after the show wraps up. Shay Miller and Peter Platky from the AO Community Education Unit (CEU) represented Metro's interests and fielded numerous questions in relation to the shutdown, our award winning Dumb Ways To Die campaign and other network specific questions. Meanwhile back at Flinders Street, Station Officer, Karen Walker, was doing a terrific job on platforms 8 and 9 keeping customers informed, making safety announcements and interacting with all the excited kids on their way to the Show. Some of the kids got to answer some questions about safety around trains to win Dumb Ways to Die badges, stickers and books. Karen received an overwhelming response from the kids and parents who enjoyed this interactive session. Great job, Karen. Pictured: (left) Karen asking a young girl about safety at the station. 6 Alex on work and the way forward at Westall Introducing Alex Panayi, Metro s Depot Manager at the Westall Train Maintenance Centre. Alex joined Metro in 2011 as the principle Rolling Stock manager for the balanced maintenance project. This project has now been fully implemented on the Comeng fleet, which has yielded an increase in availability and a decrease in fleet maintenance faults. Now the Depot Manager at Westall, Alex said he is really enjoying working with the team and has been impressed with their expertise and dedication. The Rolling Stock division is working hard to introduce best practice maintenance methods across all fleet types, Alex said. At Westall, where we maintain Comeng trains, we re using new techniques and innovative ideas get the most out of the fleet. To achieve best practice we need to review everything we do on the train and in the depot. Westall depot recently introduced a Rapid Improvement Works, With compliments Wednesday 2 October Just wanted to compliment you on the handling of the problems on the Belgrave line yesterday. Station staff and the driver made regular announcements. Buses were ready to go and there were plenty of them. There were staff to direct us. It was seamless. What a difference from three years ago when these types of incidents just left people stranded. Well done Metro! Graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Mechanical Engineering, Alex began his rail career in 2003 in the UK, with a career highlight of being the senior project engineer at Eurostar International for the delivery of meter long trains capable of travelling in excess of 300 kilometres per hour. which is a process by which the depot itself makes small rapid changes to the depot every 6 to 8 weeks. The Rapid Improvement Works allows the depot to take action on areas we think need improving. This allows for us to continually improve and strive to be better - it s been encouraging to see everyone at the depot get involved in the program. Notwithstanding this, it allows the depot to become more effective, more efficient and importantly, to work safer. Stop horsing around and save the date! Get ready for Metro Day Out which is being held at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday 30 November. An action packed family day will start at 12pm and the evening concert will be sure to get you dancing. Invitations will be in the mail later this month, but until then save the date in your calendar! Customer: Mark S Page 6

Working around the clock With compliments Monday 30 September Spotlight On Mitcham: The Mitcham station redevelopment and grade separation is progressing at pace. The works include the removal of level crossings located at Mitcham Road and Rooks Road, plus a brand new premium station at Mitcham. Think Blue Sky: The project will also deliver new bus interchange facilities, a pedestrian access way at Station Street, entry for vehicles and buses at Simla Street, plus a bicycle and pedestrian path along the railway line between Rooks Road and Mitcham Road. Hi. We have a wonderful driver on the Belgrave line. He drove the 06:44 from Upper FTG to the city today. He mentioned he's retiring after 40 years. He always has a joke or interesting story about the city. Customer: Kelley M Is this you? There has been a recent surge in number and size of files being loaded on to staff Home Drives ( H:\ or My Documents ). This has caused storage use to j u m p b e y o n d r e a s o n a b l e expectations and we need everyone across Metro to review their Home Drives and remove any non-essential large or personal files which may be stored there at the moment. P l e a s e r e f e r t o t h e Communications Policy for guidelines about what should, and importantly, should not be stored on your Home Drives. ICT will be conducting an audit of Home Drives targeting large or obviously personal files for removal. As a progression from this audit, ICT will use this audit to develop storage limits for home drives to be implemented in the near future. Further information regarding storage limits and exemptions will b e d i s t r i b u t e d p r i o r t o implementation. Don t forget to change your clocks Daylight Savings starts this Sunday 6 October at 2:00am. Clocks will be moved forward one hour, to 3:00am. Page 7
