1 MAGNIFICENT MILESTONES We celebrated the achievements of some of our longest serving employees on Wednesday. More page $1.5B FOR MELBOURNE METRO On Tuesday, the Government announced $1.5 billion will be set aside in next week s budget for the construction of the Melbourne Metro Rail Project. The Melbourne Metro Rail Project moves our rail network closer to a true metro-style system with more underground stations. It will increase the capacity, reliability and efficiency of Melbourne s busiest train lines, allowing 20,000 more customers to use the system in peak hour. The project will deliver two nine-kilometre rail tunnels from South Kensington to South Yarra, travelling underneath Swanston Street in the CBD, as part of a new Sunbury to Cranbourne/ Pakenham line. New underground stations will be created at Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain. Train/tram interchanges will be introduced at Parkville and Domain. Rail tunnel entrances at South Kensington and South Yarra will also be part of the project. This significant funding injection will allow the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority to complete the reference design, undertake the statutory planning process and allow the construction of the CBD rail tunnel to begin. More on page 2... Page 1
2 Govt. announces $1.5b investment for Melbourne Metro From page 1... The funding committed by the Government will also allow for land acquisition, preparation of Expression of Interest and Request for Tender documents, and significant early works such as tram rerouting and service relocations, ahead of contract award and major construction of the tunnels. Geotechnical investigations are a key part of planning and designing the project, they provide vital data about ground conditions and soil quality. The information gathered will inform the precise alignment, depth and design of the new rail tunnels and underground stations. Over the coming months 140 boreholes will be drilled between South Kensington and South Yarra. This testing builds on previous geotechnical work undertaken for Melbourne Metro Rail, and will be complemented by site surveying, underground service identification and other preparatory works. Construction of the Melbourne Metro Rail Project is due to start in Premier, Daniel Andrews, with Minister for Transport, Jacinta Allan, at the first Melbourne Metro geotechnical testing site on Spring Street (pictured right). 3 Metro s magnificent milestones On Wednesday we celebrated the achievements of some of our longest serving employees at our annual Milestones dinner. CEO Andrew Lezala and our executive team were joined by Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, as well as PTV CEO, Mark Wild, to acknowledge the 344 employees who have reached a five year Milestone of 15 years or more in Andrew thanked the 320 guests in the room whilst also recognising the employees who couldn t be there because they were rostered on to work. The railway doesn t stop, not even for special events like tonight s celebration. Melbourne has a long and proud history in rail. It was the first passenger railway to operate in Australia. The people in this room have been an integral part of that history who have all, no doubt, seen great change throughout their careers. Metro is in the business of change and fuelled by the great energy of its people we are creating an even better railway for the people of Melbourne. Our employees bring a diverse set of skills, experience and backgrounds to work every day. This energy and expertise helps us drive change but it also relies on the support of partners, family and loved ones. So tonight is about celebrating the wonderful contribution made by our loyal employees and their families, he said. Before the official proceedings ended, Andrew made a special tribute to the longest serving employee in attendance, Barry Lurhs, for his 50 years of service in the railway. Page 3

5 The Syndal project team: Joseph Sala, Shane Jansen, Bart Tesselaar and Peter McBride on site at Syndal. Syndal multi-deck car park taking shape The four-level, 250 space multi-deck car park at Syndal is quickly taking shape. As of last week, most of the new steel structure of the car park is in place and the precast wall that separates the rail corridor from the building site is complete. Project Manager, Peter McBride, said the task of constructing the wall closest to the rail corridor has been the most critical to date. So far more than 4,000 cubic metres of soil has been removed from the railway embankment and 82 piles and 42 precast panels have been installed. All this work is taking place while more than 2,500 train services pass by less than four metres from the work site. This fantastic achievement has only been possible due to the good planning and cooperation of all our business areas. We received great support from Network Safety, Track, Signals, Overheads, Drivers, Customer Services and the Chief Engineer, he said. The Syndal project team is also working hard to keep the local community informed about project progress. Maintaining positive relationships with local business traders and Metro customers has also been pivotal to the positive delivery of this project. To thank the traders for their support, the team arranges for shop windows to be cleaned every month. This is a small gesture but a great way to thank our stakeholders for their patience and understanding, Peter said. Metro customers are also very well looked after. Station Hosts, Lynton McKenzie and Mandy Taylor know many customers by name and make regular platform announcements to ensure that everyone knows what s going on. The local community has also been involved, choosing the exterior design for the car park. The car park is on track to open in late September and will accommodate 250 cars. This will bring the total parking capacity at Syndal to 590 car spaces. Page 5

7 Quick thinking AOs revive sick customer In the early morning peak of Wednesday 8 April, a routine train patrol took an unexpected turn for the worst. But the situation was well handled by the AO crew of Creton, Elbaba, Murrihy and Bellini. As they boarded a train at Essendon Station, Officer Creton noticed a male passenger lying across the seats of the train. The passenger was unresponsive. The AOs immediately notified the driver of the situation and contacted 000 however, while they were on the phone, the passenger stopped breathing. Under the guidance of the 000 operator, the AOs promptly began chest compressions and after a short time the passenger began to cough and started to breathe on his own again. The AOs placed the passenger in the recovery position and monitored his condition until Ambulance Officers arrived at Broadmeadows Station. The quick thinking and professionalism of these AOs saved this man s life. Well done to these officers who went beyond the call of duty to once again ensure the safety of our customers. Welcome to our new Trainee Authorised Officers Earlier this month, we welcomed some enthusiastic new Trainee AOs. We wish them all the best in their new roles.
