A special partner programme has been arranged to allow partners active participation in the conference activities plus some girls time. Day one begins with an enlightening presentation from our MC Brett Tutheridge to put you in a conference mood. This is followed by a key presentation from Gerald Delaney who will get you thinking about how well you are prepared for the increased opportunities and market demand that you will be experiencing over the next few years. Then you can have a break and join us for our AGM before you start preparing your team for the Quiz Night. Always competitive but always lots of laughs! Day two kicks off a presentation by Nathan Penny ASB Rural Economist on the state of the economy. Always a particularly interesting session and one that effects all of us whether we like it or not! The rest of the day is devoted to particularly relevant industry presentations before the start of the afternoons activities. Great for networking and heaps of fun. On your return it s time to prepare for our Gala Dinner at The Top of the Town restaurant where you will be entertained by Graham Bell of Police 10 fame. Those of you who remember Dick Taylors brilliant presentation last year will not be disappointed with some of the stories Graham has to tell! Day three is a continuation of high quality industry speakers including a Market Access/Compliance workshop with Peter Brown and Chris Mawson from MPI. Continued on page 2

The existing seven rooms are on rail and the new addition will more than double the present capacity. The racking and canopy are presently under construction and the facility will be ready for the coming Dairy Season. 3 MPI is looking at the way they set and review charges Following a significant update of biosecurity and food safety charges in 2015, MPI commenced a First Principles Review to explore opportunities for improvements to the way they set and review charges. More information on the review can be found here. The review is happening in two stages: Stage one is about developing the broad framework which MPI will use to guide setting and review of charges. Stage two will be a more detailed review of existing charges to see where they need to update charges, or improve the way charges are designed. MPI has also released a discussion paper which outlines the objectives, principles, policies and processes that will guide their approach to setting and reviewing charges. The discussion paper can be found here. Continuing Positive Outlook All good news for the Cold Storage industry and the reason why our conference theme is Future Shock Acceleration of Change. The outlook for New Zealand primary industries is positive with strong growth forecast across most sectors and dairy prices expected to gradually increase over the next 2 years. New Zealand primary industry export revenue is estimated to reach over $36.7 billion in the year ending June 2016, supported by strong growth in horticulture and other primary sector exports and foods. Horticulture exports exceeded $5 billion for the first time in 2015/16. Kiwifruit exports hit record levels for the year to March 2016, and exports of wine, apples, and pears are increasing due to new plantings reaching maturity. As an example, apple and pear export revenue has doubled since 2012, estimated to reach almost $700 million for the year ending June Record high for New Zealand seafood exports The strong export showing of the seafood sector in 2015 has accelerated in the first quarter of this year. Export returns for the 12 months to end April were a record $1.75 billion. The strongest value growth is coming from exports of frozen fin fish, rock lobster, orange roughy, fish meal and mussels are also returning increased prices. The Quota Management System, now in its 30th year, has ensured stocks are sustainably managed. Discerning consumers around the world are increasingly looking for high quality, sustainably harvested seafood and are prepared to pay a premium for that. It is a happy situation that the New Zealand seafood industry sits squarely in that niche.

4 Primary Industries outlook for the next 4 years MPI s Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries 2016 is now available on the MPI website. The Situation and Outlook for Primary industries is an annual publication that assesses the current state of New Zealand s primary industries and their prospects for growth over the next four years. Otaki Cold Store Changes Hands As part of Hall s recent acquisition of Icepak they have divested the Otaki Cold store property to the former Icepak shareholder and Director Wayne Grattan. Wayne has been operating this business in its own right for several years and it made commercial sense to simply sell him the property. Australia s updated Biosecurity Act From 16th June Australia the updated biosecurity act has been in place Biosecurity Act Australia has also published an interactive online e-learning tool to help industry and other government agencies better understand the Act. Everyone from regular importers and brokers to the shipping, cargo and airline industries need to know how the new Biosecurity Act 2015 affects them. Information is also available on: Changes to import conditions Certain goods will no longer require an import permit from 16 June and can be imported as long as import conditions are met. Under the Biosecurity Act 2015,selected fresh and processed plant products, animal feeds, peat, used machinery and tyres may no longer require an import permit.
