4 Shire of Westonia Council News 2 May 2018 fortnightly information from us to you Prescribed Burn Dept. Parks & Wildlife The Dept. of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, Parks and Wildlife Service is planning to undertake a prescribed burn this autumn in the Walyahmoning. The burn is a scrub rolled buffer with an area of around 390 hectares in size. This will provide a buffer of around 22km in length. The scrub rolling was completed in Autumn 2016 and is to be burnt from 27 th April The burn is isolated from any public roads, however should smoke affect the road the appropriate warning signs will be put in place by the Dept. of Parks and Wildlife to warn motorist of smoke and other hazards. A Main Roads approved traffic management plan will be enforced for tracks adjacent to the burn. Community Bus Merredin & Districts Junior Football Assoc. (Colts) The Shire recently resolved to agree to the Merredin & Districts Junior Football Association (Colts) request for the use of the Westonia Community Bus to travel to six (6) away games in the towns of Northam and York. Several kids located in and around the Westonia district as well as several Burracoppin Football Club kids would be catching the bus on these occasions. There are also a number of disadvantage kids in the Merredin & surrounding area from broken homes etc that may not be able to play football without such transport. There is also a large portion of the families still involved with either local Senior Football, (Burracoppin & Nukarni) or local Netball, Hockey (senior & junior) who need a parent to follow either sport. The decision falls in line with the Shire of Westonia s Strategic Plan in Enhancing Social and Community Well Being 2.1 Facilitate the provision of recreational and leisure opportunities; 2.2 Provide facilities and programs for health and well-being needs; 2.3 Our children, youth, families and seniors are valued, involved and supported; 2.4 Support and encourage voluntary community services. The decision was strongly received by the Merredin & Districts Junior Football Association (Colts) and as a result the Shire of Westonia will become a major sponsor of the Association through its decision. The Association have also received sponsorship for the fuel cost from Liberty Rural, leaving only the running costs for the Shire of Westonia 4
5 Page 2 Council News Fortnightly Roads Report The road crew have completed the new reconstruction of a 2.2km section of the M040. This was recently sealed and sees the road widened to between 7 to 8m. Reseals of 4.5km section of the M040 east of Warrachuppin rd will be undertaken next week The roads crew are currently reconstructing a 5 km section of Henderson Rd which will see the road widened to 10m with 8m gravel resheet Road users are requested to take care when traveling this road Road users are also reminded to use the whole road instead of driving straight down the middle of gravel roads to help preserve the gravel surfaces Bring on some decent rains so winter grading can proceed. Caravan Park News Caravan clubs and group bookings are on the increase and we are booking out most nights which is great for our local businesses and tourist attractions. Throughout April we have had Trac Mac, Silver Possums and the West side Caravanners Club. With so much positive feedback, from all of these group members and other caravan guests, such as how great our little gem of a town is and how friendly the locals are. The Shire would like to say thank you to the community for helping to provide a positive atmosphere for tourism in Westonia. The Shire is also asking for your help with monitoring key tourism spots, providing feedback on any potential problems at any of our tourist sites. Such as tree s over tracks/trails, overflowing rubbish and general untidy appearance. 8 Date: Wednesday, 2 May 2018 To: Westonia Landholders, Residents, and Visitors Notice of Intention to Lay 1080 Poison in the Westonia Common. Notice is hereby provided that the Shire of Westonia intends to lay 1080 poison baits in the Westonia Common for the control of foxes. The baiting program is due to commence after Wednesday, 9 May 2018 and be completed by Saturday, 9 June Please be advised that 1080 is highly toxic. Taking of carcasses, removal of hides, and shooting or trapping animals (for human or animal consumption) is prohibited during the baiting period and for at least 14 days after the completion of the baiting program. Please ensure children and other persons in your care are restricted from entering the site of baiting. Please restrain your pets, working dogs and stock to avoid the possibility of poisoning through direct baiting or through eating 1080 poisoned animals. If you would like further information about this proposed baiting program please contact the Shire of Westonia through the details below. 14 GOLF NEWS Golf season has started again and we had 11 golfers competing for the Pip & Elsie Memorial trophy in warm dry conditions. One of our Patrons, Tim Della Bosca, opened the season by hitting the first golf ball down fairway one. Our winners were Ada Barnett, Steve Hale and Syd Crees on a handy 63 Nett followed by Jamie Criddle & Nigel Edgecombe on a 64 1/4. We held our A.G.M. and again elected Jamie as our President. Renae & Sharon remain our Secretary & Treasurer. Nigel is our new captain with Shaun our Vice Captain. In an amazing gesture the Della Bosca family have gifted the golf club land to the golf club. We thank them immensely and were overwhelmed by their generosity. Subs and ball fees remain the same as last year and we hope to see some new golfers out there this year as well as our past members. Next Sunday is a Club day starting at 12 noon and the following Sunday is the J & S Fox Mother s Day Trophy with tea at Carrabin.
