1 . Improved facilities and layout The MSF scheme to develop the land adjoining the station involves creating two substantial new ticket halls to replace the existing ones. These new ticket halls will be located further west than the existing, connecting with the overbridge rather than the subway. overb ridge The proposed new St John s Hill ticket hall provides considerably greater capacity than the existing ticket hall having twelve ticket gates together with increased concourse space and fewer retail units. It is accessed from two levels; one at the same level as the overbridge via Brighton Yard and the second via escalators and lifts directly from St John s Hill. This arrangement will provide considerably improved facilities for the local passengers making over million journeys annually. ticke t co unte St. J ohn s H i ll r Perspective section showing circulation diagram Perspective section through St. John s Hill station showing entry level and direct access to footbridge. 2 .. Improved facilities and layout cont. The overbridge is extended on the north side to connect into a new Grant Road station entrance. This entrance uses escalators and lifts to transfer passengers from street level directly up to the overbridge. The subway is retained for interchanging passengers and emergency access with additional emergency escape routes onto Grant Road and Falcon Road. The MSF scheme complements the new additional staircases being delivered under the Access for All scheme by providing additional staircases to platforms &, 9&0 and as part of the application proposal. Live train dispatch information boards will be provided within the new pedestrian retail streets to provide passengers greater choice in their station waiting environment. 3 . Land for platform straightening and lengthening The MSF proposals release land which would allow NR to straighten and lengthen platforms to. The straightening would reduce the substantial curvatures and large stepping distances between the platform and trains which are most pronounced on platform. The extensions would be necessary to meet NR s aspirations for future -car operations from the station. Longer trains serving these extended platforms would accommodate a substantial number of additional passengers, particularly in both the am and pm peak periods. Only with the land made available by the proposed MSF development could platforms & be straightened and lengthened for -car operations. Land given over to allow for lengthening and realignment. Large stepping distances between the platform and trains Potential platform lengthening
4 . New interchange facilities The MSF proposals have been conceived as a holistic solution to the transport issues at. The proposals will provide robust improvements to all forms of transport serving this extremely busy town centre. The bus stops on St John s Hill and Grant Road will be relocated closer to the new entrances, and the existing stop on Falcon Road will be enhanced with a larger waiting area. Raised kerbs and shelters will be provided, facilitating greater access to buses for passengers with reduced mobility. The scheme provides some 00 cycle parking spaces for public use. Of these are designated for station-related parking, split between Brighton Yard and Grant Road. The development also makes provision on Grant Road for Transport for London s proposed cycle hire scheme. In addition to substantially increasing cycle parking provision from the existing 9 spaces, the development also enables cycle parking stands to be relocated away from St John s Hill, removing current congestion for pedestrians and bus passengers. Bus stops to move nearer station entrance The central taxi rank on St John s Hill and the feeder rank in Prested Road will be replaced by a larger eight-cab rank within the Brighton Yard. A supplementary two-cab taxi rank will be located on the north side of St John s Hill close to the new station entrance, maintaining a facility for visitors to town centre. A CCTV monitoring system will link the two ranks so that taxis can readily be despatched to waiting passengers. The proposals have been supported by Transport for London s Public Carriage Office. Mobility impaired passengers will be able to use both entrances to the St John s Hill ticket hall and also the Grant Road entrance, providing a fully accessible station for the first time. Drop-off facilities within Brighton Yard will provide level access to the overbridge. In addition, two designated parking spaces are proposed on Grant Road outside the new station entrance to enable car-borne mobility impaired passengers to be escorted to and from the station platforms. In addition to providing a disabled drop-off facility within Brighton Yard, five general pick-up/drop-off bays are proposed on Grant Road in close proximity to the new station entrance. The proposals on St John s Hill and Falcon Road have been designed to complement and integrate fully with Wandsworth Council s planned Exemplar road improvement scheme. 5 ST JOHN' FOWLER CLOSE Holliday. Reduced walking distances to station entrances Pedestrian access will be greatly enhanced by the MSF proposals to improve the pedestrian environment around the station. The proposals offer a significant increase in the pedestrian accessibility with % of passengers benefiting from reduced walking distances to the new ticket barriers compared with the existing station layout. In addition to a new station square on the St John s Hill frontage, the wide pedestrian street through the scheme will provide a more direct route from the bus stops on Falcon Road. A wider, raised pedestrian crossing is also planned for St John s Hill, opposite the station entrance, providing an improved link to the south and the southern side of St John s Hill. WINSTANLEYROAD The scheme will also relocate current obstructions on footways around the development, such as cycle parking and the flower kiosk, providing a greater width for pedestrian movement. In addition, the full opening of the Brighton Yard entrance will remove the majority of pedestrian flow from the most constrained Huitt section of the northern footway on St John s Hill between the Brighton Yard entrance and the new station square.
