MD Convention in Havre, Montana went very well with over 250 attendees including 39 from our district. Once again our district is one of the leaders in the MD. CC Bill Engram was named to the position of MD Secretary/Treasurer by the Council of Governors. Good luck to you CC Bill as you embark on your new position. For the first time the delegates voted on the positions of Council Chair and Vice Council Chair. This is the only year that Council Chair was voted for because in the future Vice Council/Finance Chair will move up to Council Chair the next year. PDG Donna Coulter, Grande Prairie was elected as Council Chair This was the most hotly contested position. with the race going to a fourth ballot. The candidate with the lowest vote count after each ballot was dropped for the next ballot. PDG Ben Apeland was elected Vice Council/Finance Chair on the first ballot. This was my last Council of Governors meeting as my term has come to an end. I have enjoyed serving with my fellow Governors this year and I think that our incoming Governors will do a great job next year. There will be many changes in our district next year. I look forward to joining DG Tom s cabinet and continuing to serve the district. It is unfortunate that WWID and Club Officer training had to be cancelled, hopefully it will come back bigger and better next year. - DG Roger Page

2 MD 37 Convention Report I was fortunate to attend the MD 37 Convention in Havre, Montana May 15 16, Delegates from 76 clubs and 58 communities, (39 from L, 39 from O, 52 from I, 41 from N, 68 from S ), were joined by an additional 55 for the District Governors Banquet. The entire convention was held at the Montana State University and the grounds were quite pretty with trees blooming and no snow in sight. Plenary sessions included Leader Dogs, Global Membership Team, Montana Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation, the 3 T s (Transfusion, Transition and Transformation) and How to Establish New Clubs. My personal favourite was the 3 T s. If you are presented with an opportunity to watch this video and participate I am certain you will enjoy and learn! Bob Rice, Mayor of Havre, welcomed the delegates and had Canadian flags hung down main street in honour of the Canadian Lions. Havre loves Canadians and we appreciated their hospitality! The Memorial Service was a video presentation featuring photos of 90 departed Lions. Lion Don Finnamore, Yellowknife Lions, received the furthest traveler award with 1400 miles. That s a dedicated Lion folks. Lion Don bought along his bagpipes to assist in the Memorial service and Grand March. CC Lion Bill Engram and Lion Don shared a shot of beverage. Lion Bill made a really funny face! PDG 2 Lion Ken Pickett, Athabasca Lions, was inducted into the Multiple District Hall of Fame. Lion Ken joined Lions in the 1970 s. I believe he was just out of elementary school. He was joined by his daughter and two sons all Lions members. Congratulations Lion Ken! Introductions and presentation of the green District Governor jackets were presented to Lions Tom Hodgson (L), Dave Dalby (I), Fred Walters (O), Pam Beyer (N) and Jerry Smith (S). Incidentally, Lion Jerry displayed superb bus driver skills as he shuttled Lions from the hotel to MSU. Lion Shirley Engram was serenaded in congratulations of her birthday. Later, PIP Lion Judge Brian singularly entertained Lion Irene Schwab with a song in honour of her birthday. Lion Ben Apeland, finance chair, and Lion Donna Wozney, second vice-district governor 37L, were elected with overwhelming success. Results of voting were quite exciting and required 3 ballots to elect the new Council Chair. Lions from all districts ultimately chose Lion Donna Coulter, of 37L s Grande Prairie Lions, as s Council Chair! Congratulations Lion Donna! The Inaugural Regional Rally will be held in Edmonton in January 22 and 23, Stay tuned for further details! All input and volunteers to work on this project are welcome. I would suggest all Lions make every effort to attend next year s convention to be held in Kalispell MT. May 14 & 15, If the enthusiasm in the hospitality area was any indication it will be most fun and worthwhile! HMM. I believe that is the highlight of the convention. Perhaps more information and a few telling pictures may show up in subsequent editions though! - Lion Karen Olson Fairview & District Lions Music Festival The 7th Annual Fairview & District Lions Music Festival, June 19, 20 & 21, Fairview, AB. 3 Lion Bill Pasternak (August 24, May 17, 2009) joined the Edmonton Host Lions Club in He worked on numerous community projects, served as President in 1964 and Zone Chairman in For over ten years in the 70s and 80s, he organized Youth Exchange programs with Japan, Sweden and Germany. Lion Bill also contributed to Lions projects for the growing Seniors population and in the late 70s designed the first Lions Senior Citizens Recreation Centre on 111 Avenue. He remained on the Recreation Centre s Board of Directors until recent years and was involved in fund-raising for their recently completed major facilities expansion. We collect can tabs and sell the aluminum for scrap. This, with money donated by the Jack DoBush Fellowship and individual Lions Clubs goes to a fund managed by the PEDIATRIC DIABETES EDUCATION CENTRE at the Stollery Children s Health Centre in Edmonton. Money raised is used for: families, lacking extended health care benefits or other forms of coverage, have been enabled to implement costly but essential diabetes treatment for their newly diagnosed children. families who struggle financially, have received emergency diabetes supplies for their children families, who could not afford camp fees have been able to send their children to diabetes camp families lacking coverage for insulin pumps, have been assisted with the cost of pump therapy to enable their children to achieve improved glucose control Although can tabs are not worth much per se, the collecting demonstrates the commitment of children, teens, their schools and families to reach out and to help all children with diabetes to be safe, healthy and happy. Quotes are from a letter written by one of the Diabetes Counselors at the Education Centre in a letter to PDG Lion Stan Kozoriz in Continued on Page 4 Edmonton Host Lions Club 80 th Charter Saturday October 17, 2009 Cocktails 530 Dinner 630 Speaker ID Dr. Patti Hill Cost: $55.00 before September 4 $70.00 September 5-October 1, (if available) Central Lions Recreation Centre Street, Edmonton Tickets may be purchased by sending a cheque payable to: Edmonton Host Lions Club (Attn: Karen Olson) Avenue NW Edmonton AB T5A 3G7 ** Tickets will be held for you at the door unless otherwise indicated. 4 Can Tabs from page The can tab project was the dream of one Lion: Nick Harrison. He presented the idea to the Westmount Club in At first it was thought to be strictly a project that the Westmount Lions were using for fundraising. This was not what Nick wanted. Through his urgings and with the help of Westmount Club members the project has grown, with clubs throughout the district and province collecting tabs. In Feb. of 2006 I went out to PDG Lion Frits Van der Kley s acreage and collected his supplies and took over the collecting of the tabs on behalf of the Riverside Lions. Lion Frits had for years done the storage and sorting at his acreage out near Tofield. Now it is done out of my garage in Millwoods. I encourage all Lions to support this worthy cause and keep up the good work you have done for the past thirteen years. So far, thanks to you all, we have been able to donate over $110, to this fund. And it is all from stuff you would normally throw away. I would encourage each club to designate one person to be their can tab coordinator to pass on the tabs to me. With this in mind I have finally set up a designated for people to contact me through. When you want to get rid of them contact me at cantab@shaw.ca and arrangements will be made to rid you of the tabs. I will also accept any scrap copper you might wish to get rid of. Just put it in a separate bag and I ll gather it all together. The prices of scrap have fallen like everything else and I figure that expanding our recycling might enable us to keep our contributions up in these tight economic times. 5 Thank you, Lions of MD 37 I extend my most sincere thanks to the Lions delegates at the Multiple District 37 Convention held recently in Havre, Montana for electing me to serve as Multiple District 37 Council Chairperson for It is an honor to be afforded this marvelous opportunity and I will do all I can to maintain your confidence in my abilities. Thank you as well to all the Lions of MD 37 for your support and I promise to work hard so that I might live up to your expectations. Lion Donna Coulter, PDG Council Chairperson-elect Zone 4B Reports Thanks for all the support from a great group of Lions. For the past two years I have been blessed with outstanding attendance, reporting and of course a great secretary (thank you Lion Carol). Speaking of Lion Carol Moeller, the new Zone 4B Chair, I would ask that you provide her with the same exceptional support you are all so skilled at. Once again Lion Carol comes to mind along with Lion Ted Moller (Fort Saskatchewan) as I submit this truly wonderful photo depicting our time together. - Wanda Coates CapitalEX Parade Fellow Lions: PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD Although plans are coming together nicely for our District 37L entry in this parade, we are still in need of assistance. We hope that both individuals and clubs will assist us! 1. MASCOTS... we can use all of these that we can get... hopefully there are some Lion suits out there that can be obtained or better yet, worn by a volunteer from your club There are still a couple of simple design mini-floats that we would very much like to see in the parade and we need a club or a group to take on the task of building one of them and bringing it to the parade. Designs/ Ideas are available...just offer as quickly as possible, we have to provide an accurate description of our entry to Northlands. 3. Helpers will be needed at the start of the parade, EARLY in the morning, to assist in final touches to the various units we will assemble as our entry. These people will be more than welcome to ride on something in the parade. All participants will be issued a parade special t-shirt, so leave your vests etc. at home. We do however need an advance committment by June 20th. 4. Who has large/giant plush lions that can be used to sit on top of golf carts carrying our v.i.p. s? Lions: we have within our grasp the opportunity to present ourselves and our organization to the public in a way we have not done in the past. From our International President[s] down, public relations has been recognized as being desparately needed. Come on people, let s do this right!
