6 Wednesday 9 th March 2016 The Networking Day; three options for field trips: a. Rotorua approximately 3 hours drive from Auckland, Rotorua is a world renowned Māori cultural centre. The field trip includes: Travelling through New Zealand countryside; Morning tea at the Old Kaimai Dairy Factory ; A guided geothermal valley walk to see geysers and boiling mud pools; A steambox hangi lunch overlooking the famous Pohutu Geyser; A visit to the Māori Arts & Crafts Institute; and Time to relax at a hot mineral spa b. Coromandel a seaside town on the Coromandel Peninsula, approximately 2.5 hours drive from Auckland. The field trip includes: A scenic drive of beaches, coves and harbours lined with pohutukawa trees; Morning tea at a beach café; An opportunity to experience mussel farming in the Firth of Thames; Lunch at the Mussel Kitchen; and A visit to the Miranda Shorebird Centre. c. Waitakere Rain Forest a native New Zealand forest rich in Māori history and is approximately 40 minutes west of downtown Auckland. This field trip includes: A guided forest walk An explanation of the use of native plants for food and medicine in the past and present; A demonstration of ancient fishing practices and the significance of the lunar calendar today; A traditional hangi lunch, which has been prepared and cooked in the traditional Māori way Visiting the Muriwai Gannet Colony.
