3 Welcome On behalf of Mr Murray Fosbender, President of the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association, I invite you to register for our Annual Scientific Meeting. The conference will be held at the new Sky City Convention Centre in the 5 star Grand Hotel. The hotel is centrally located in Auckland City close to the viaduct basin and inner city. The meeting is being held between the semi final and final of the rugby world cup and there will be a world cup theme throughout the meeting including the 2nd semi final been shown live over breakfast in the trade exhibition area on the Monday morning and a rugby theme for the black tie dinner. The golf and fishing afternoon should not be missed with a scenic ferry ride back from the Gulf Harbour Country Club to the city of sails. The theme of the meeting is Innovations and Controversies in Orthopaedic Surgery. There will be current concepts symposia utilising audience participation monitors and our expert panel to stimulate vibrant discussions. There will also be free papers and a combined session on the Wednesday morning with the Australia New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society. 4 Speakers and Invited Visitors Douglas A Dennis MD Dr Dennis is director of clinical research at the Rocky Mountain Musculoskeletal Research Laboratory, Denver, Colorado. He is a past president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and is the current first vice president of the American Knee Society. Dr Dennis has dedicated his career to the advancement of total hip and knee replacement. He has special interest in minimally invasive hip and knee surgery and implant design. Ken Yamaguchi MD Ken is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Shoulder and Elbow Service at the Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, USA. He has special interests and expertise in degenerative, traumatic and sports disorders of the shoulder and elbow. He is a world leader in arthroscopic and minimally invasive shoulder surgery and the management of shoulder arthritis. Mr Ian Torode (MBBS FRACS FRCS) Ian is a renowned paediatric orthopaedic surgeon. He is the Director of The Limb Deficiency Service and the Spinal Service of the Royal Children s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He has expertise in all areas of paediatric orthopaedics especially spinal deformity. He was awarded the RACS medal in 2000 for his contribution to the Asia Pacific area. He is the invited Presidential Speaker. Richard de Steiger (FRACS) Richard de Steiger is the Director of Orthopaedics and Trauma at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia. He completed his FRACS (Orth) in Melbourne in 1991 and had further fellowship training in the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford and with Professor R Ganz in Bern, Switzerland. His research interests include Navigation for joint arthroplasty in trauma, adult hip dysplasia, surgical education and the application of stem cells in orthopaedics. Dance the night away to a leading band. This night promises to be a great evening with something for everyone. Cost: Included in the registration fee. Extra tickets can be purchased on an individual basis for $ each.

11 Conference Sports Activities DATE & TIMES PROGRAMME Tuesday 16 October Time: Approximately The golf and fishing activities will be based at the Gulf Harbour Country Club. Transport will depart from the Grand Hotel entrance at 1100 (sharp) and you will be transferred (approximately 1 hour) by bus to the spectacular Gulf Harbour Country Club. Upon arrival you will receive a boxed lunch at your activitiy. Upon the completion of the events all participants will board a charter vessel for a 1 hour cruise on the Hauraki Gulf and Waitemata Harbour back to Auckland. During the boat ride refreshments will be served. At the ferry terminal coach transport will return to the Grand Hotel. Return time approximately Location: Departing from Grand Hotel entrance at 11.00am (sharp) NZOA 2007 Conference Golf Tournament A fiercely contested annual tournament where at stake is the prized Gillies Trophy (men) and the Kirker Salver Trophy (women). This year s event is supported by Zimmer and will take place on the highly acclaimed Gulf Harbour course. Accompanying Partners and trade representatives are invited to play. Please indicate on the registration form if you require hire equipment. Cost: $ per person The Hauraki Gulf Fishing Challenge Enjoy an afternoon on the Hauraki Gulf. From Gulf Harbour it is only a short trip to world famous Snapper and Kingfish spots. The Ernie Thompson Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the most successful angler. All equipment will be provided and experienced and knowledgeable guides will be on hand. Cost: $ per person Tennis Challenge Singles and Doubles will be paired for an afternoon of tennis at the ASB Tennis Centre. The Tennis Champion will be awarded the Hadlow Trophy.
