February 2018 Cronulla Update Mark Speakman MP for Cronulla Attorney General This issue includes: $63m Sutherland Hospital upgrade On-demand buses Gannons Road bridge F6 extension starting Hospital upgrades opened Premier Gladys Berejiklian opened the $63 million redevelopment of Sutherland Hospital in December. The dedicated staff members at Sutherland Hospital now have a world-class facility, equipment and services to improve on the exceptional care they already provide. Patients from around the Sutherland Shire can now access: A new and expanded Emergency Department A new Emergency Department Short Stay Unit A new General Medical Unit A new General Surgical Inpatient Unit Expanded Critical Care Medical Unit A 140-space ground level car park. This expansion follows the $277 million upgrade at St George Hospital opened in October, providing Southern Sydney with, among other things, a new 52-bed intensive care and high dependency unit, 128 more inpatient beds and 8 additional digital and interventional operating theatres. New interns 1
Public transport update On-demand public transport On-demand bus trials have started in parts of the Sutherland Shire, allowing you to book a shuttle to pick you up online or by phone. The suburbs covered include Burraneer, Caringbah South, Dolans Bay, Grays Point, Gymea Bay, Lilli Pilli, Port Hacking and Yowie Bay and parts of Caringbah, Cronulla, Gymea, Kirrawee, Miranda and Woolooware. See the maps below for the parts of the Cronulla electorate being serviced. For more information and other maps visit On-demand buses Gymea and surrounds On-demand buses Caringbah and surrounds State infrastructure update Investing in infrastructure is important for a growing economy and making NSW the most liveable state. The NSW Government is investing $80 billion in infrastructure over four years, with upgrades to hospitals, schools, roads and rail in particular. This is twice the state-funded infrastructure expenditure in the last four years of the previous Labor government; more than three times the amount spent by Labor during the Olympic boom and more than the current federal government s infrastructure commitment. The NSW Government is funding this massive program without saddling future generations with unsustainable debt, thanks to strong economic management. 2 CRONULLA UPDATE / FEBRUARY 2018
Roads update Gannons Road rail bridge The Gannons Road rail bridge will be replaced to improve traffic flow at one of the Sutherland Shire s worst bottlenecks. The bridge changes would also support a new pedestrian and bicycle path as part of the Sutherland to Cronulla Active Transport Link. Construction could commence towards the end of 2018 and be finished in around 12 to 18 months. F6 extension The F6 won t happen in my lifetime. How often have you heard that? Well it s now starting. Premier Berejiklian announced project development for stage 1 underground south to Kogarah. The F6 has been a line on a map since 1951 finally there s a commitment to start. The remainder of the motorway from Kogarah to Loftus is currently under investigation and I m pushing for decisions on these stages as soon as possible. Details at Gannons Road rail bridge F6 extension Economic update The NSW economy has grown almost twice as fast as the rest of Australia, growing 2.9% in In December, NSW recorded the lowest unemployment rate of any state for the 30th straight month. NSW had the slowest employment growth of any state in the last 10 years of the previous Labor government. NSW has added over 188,000 full-time jobs since the last election, representing 75% of all new jobs in the state. In the rest of Australia, full-time jobs account for just 48% of new jobs in total in that period. CRONULLA UPDATE / FEBRUARY
Local environment update Return and Earn container deposit scheme with Chad Townsend and Valentine Holmes The Return and Earn container deposit scheme is being rolled out across the Shire. The scheme tackles drink container litter, which makes up nearly half of all litter. Around 160 million drink containers are littered in NSW each year. South Australia has had a scheme for many decades and has the lowest proportion of drink container litter in Australia. There are new reverse vending machines at Woolooware (Shark Park carpark), Sutherland and Menai and around 10 other Shire collection points. Over 70 million containers have been collected across NSW since December. For containers covered and collection point locations see North Cronulla SLSC Kamay Botany Bay National Park The Cape Baily walking track in Kamay Botany Bay National Park has been re-opened after the September bushfire. Reconstruction of the boardwalk is expected to be finished mid-year. A huge thank you to the Kurnell and other units of the NSW Rural Fire Service who battled the fire and the National Parks and Wildlife Service for its diligent repair work. The recent State of the Beaches report rated the water quality at nearly all of Cronulla s ocean beaches as very good (the highest rating). Greenhills, Wanda, Elouera, North Cronulla, (South) Cronulla, Shelly Beach and Oak Park were graded as very good; Silver Beach, Boat Harbour, Gunnamatta Bay and Lilli Pilli were good; but Gymea Bay was poor. See topics/water/beaches/reporting-beachwater-quality/annual-state-of-thebeaches-reports Alternative manure manufacturing is taking place in Cronulla with the Cronulla Wastewater Treatment Plant reusing 19,000 tonnes annually. Other initiatives at the plant include cogeneration (up to 60% of energy needs supplied by capturing methane gas) and co-digestion (collecting fruit and vegetable waste to create more methane gas and capture more energy). 4 CRONULLA UPDATE / FEBRUARY 2018
Cost of living update The NSW government is working hard to ease cost of living pressures on families. If you regularly spend more than $25 a week on toll roads, you may soon be eligible for free vehicle registration. The rego rebate will be available for all standard privately registered vehicles from 1 July The scheme will be backdated so eligible motorists will enjoy free registration if they spend more than $25 a week from 1 July Details at Most NSW motorists will receive a CTP Green Slip refund of up to $120 this year as the NSW Government moves towards a lower cost Green Slip scheme. Sydney motorists will receive an average refund of $70. Ongoing registration costs will be around $120 lower per year than they otherwise would have been, depending on your current policy. First home buyers are now exempt from stamp duty on properties up to $650,000 and partial stamp duty relief is available on properties worth up to $800,000. (Foreign investors will now pay higher duties and land taxes.) If your child is enrolled in school, you could be eligible for a $100 active kids rebate voucher. These vouchers can be used for registration or membership fees for activities such as swimming, sports, outdoor education and dance. Details at The Low Income Household Rebate and the Family Energy Rebate helps NSW families with energy bills. The Low Income Household Rebate provides $285 a year to customers with an electricity account who hold a Pensioner Concession Card, Centrelink Health Care Card or DVA Gold Card. The Family Energy Rebate provides up to $180 a year to families that received the Family Tax Benefit. Details at CRONULLA UPDATE / FEBRUARY
Community groups update Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club has been awarded a $350,000 grant for its clubhouse redevelopment as part of the NSW Government s $4 million Surf Club Facility Program. Formed in 1907, Cronulla SLSC is one of the longest serving surf life saving clubs in Australia. This funding will help the Club upgrade its clubhouse to continue serving the community and new training facilities will also ensure that the Club continues to develop Cronulla s future lifesavers. Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club Attorney General update From 25 November new domestic violence orders are automatically enforceable across State and Territory borders, to increase victim protection. New criminal offences protect victims from intimate image abuse. Recording and distributing intimate images of a person without consent can result in up to three years jail and an $11,000 fine. The Land and Environment Court is conducting a trial of paperless hearings aiming to make justice faster, cheaper and greener and to make it easier for parties to follow proceedings. The crime rate for 16 of the 17 major offences has fallen or remained stable across NSW in the last 24 months. With Premier Berejiklian, Police Commissioner Fuller and Corrective Services Commissioner Severin 6 CRONULLA UPDATE / FEBRUARY 2018
