The next stage will focus on increasing the number of trains that can run during the morning and afternoon peak hours on the T4 and T8 lines. This includes an increase in capacity of up to 30% during the peak hour on the T4 line from the early 2020s. Since 2011 the NSW government has introduced 229 additional weekly train services on the T4 line and has achieved 100% air conditioning for regular timetabled trains on the line. 4 New and extended clearways on Taren Point Road I m delighted that, after extensive lobbying by me, much needed new and extended clearways on Taren Point Road between Captain Cook Bridge Taren Point and Kingsway Caringbah began last month. The new clearway hours north of The Boulevarde/ Captain Cook Drive are 6am-7pm Monday-Friday and 9am-6pm weekends and public holidays in both directions. The new clearway hours south of The Boulevarde/ Captain Cook Drive are 6am-7pm Monday-Friday in both directions. There are also additional parking restrictions on Taren Point Road at the intersections of The Boulevarde/Captain Cook Drive and Kingsway to improve traffic flow. To help offset loss of parking, the NSW government funded parking reconfiguration in Box Road (west of Taren Point Road) as well as timed parking changes in Kumulla Road. The parking reconfiguration creates an additional 17 spaces in Box Road, and the timed parking changes helps parking availability for business customers. 5 Sutherland to Cronulla Active Transport Link Construction of Stage 1 of the Sutherland to Cronulla Active Transport Link (SCATL) is expected to start early next year. The SCATL will be a shared off-road pedestrian and bicycle path between Sutherland and Cronulla to help make walking and cycling a more convenient, safer and enjoyable transport option. Stage 1 (Sutherland to Kirrawee) will connect key destinations such as transport interchanges, schools, residential areas and business precincts outside the rail corridor. Future stages from Kirrawee to Cronulla will make greater use of the rail corridor while connecting key destinations like transport interchanges, Sutherland Hospital, beaches, parks and recreation areas and shopping precincts. There will be further community opportunity to comment on any proposed route. CRONULLA UPDATE / NOVEMBER
Caringbah Ambulance Superstation The Caringbah Ambulance Superstation is now open. It s part of the NSW government s $150 million Sydney Ambulance Metropolitan Infrastructure Strategy to enable paramedics to deliver high quality emergency care. The NSW government has also committed to a record increase of 750 paramedics and Triple Zero (000) control centre staff over the next four years. The ambulance station upgrade complements the $62.9 million Sutherland Hospital redevelopment completed last year, which includes a new emergency department and short-stay unit, expanded critical care medicine capacity and additional inpatient capacity. Caringbah Ambulance Superstation Mental health funding Sutherland Hospital will benefit from $496,000 in funding as part of a NSW government investment to upgrade mental health infrastructure in NSW. The funding will allow Sutherland Hospital Acute Unit to build a new multipurpose room, replace bedroom and bathroom doors and purchase equipment to enhance the mental health unit. This funding is in addition to this year s record $2.1 billion State Budget for mental health services. Planning continues for the remainder of the $700 million state wide Mental Health Infrastructure Program, with a focus on enhancing specialist services. If you or someone you know needs crisis support please call Lifeline For local mental health services phone NSW Mental Health Line CRONULLA UPDATE / NOVEMBER 2018
Dogs and cats update The NSW government is leasing out a site at Kurnell (at nominal rent for the first five years) for a new secure home for one of Sydney s oldest animal shelters, Sydney Dogs and Cats Home. Lucy Speakman at Sydney Dogs and Cats Home The new shelter allows the Home to keep helping and re-housing animals as well as tripling its previous Carlton facility intake. After joining the Premier at Carlton for the announcement, I couldn t leave empty handed and went back a few days later to adopt Lucy! Therapy dogs are now re-pawting for duty at Sutherland Courthouse. The dogs provide a calming presence for victims of crime and witnesses. Therapy dogs are already regular visitors to hospitals and aged care centres in NSW, where their friendly, even temperaments have earned smiles and spread puppy love. Sydney Dogs and Cats Home Cronulla beaches stay clean 7 out of 8 Cronulla ocean beaches (Greenhills, Wanda, Elouera, North Cronulla, Cronulla, Shelly Beach and Oak Park) had excellent water quality and were suitable for swimming almost all of the time, according to the State of the Beaches report. Of the other monitored Shire spots, Boat Harbour, Silver Beach, Gunnamatta Bay baths, Lilli Pilli baths, Horderns Beach, Jibbon Beach and Como baths were all good and only Gymea Bay baths were poor. CRONULLA UPDATE / NOVEMBER
News in brief The NSW government has unveiled an unprecedented strategy to protect koalas, including a new koala hospital and major new reserves. I started the development of this strategy in my former role as Environment Minister. See: 15 new probationary constables have joined Sutherland Shire Police Area Command. Reverse vending machines are now located in the Caringbah Bowling Club car park for return of your eligible bottles and cans for a refund. There are now 17 return points in the Shire and over 680 across NSW. The Return and Earn scheme has collected over 800 million containers since last December. See: The height of high voltage power lines over Port Hacking between Burraneer and Maianbar has been raised by replacing 22m poles with 36m poles, for safer boating on the Port. New government funding of $60 million will enable public libraries in NSW to expand and upgrade their services. See: bit.ly/2abfwma The NSW government s Boating Now program will contribute an additional $400,000 towards Tonkin St wharf upgrades making the overall contribution $650,000. The NSW government has provided a $100,000 grant to construct a viewing platform at Cronulla Park. The works will be carried out in conjunction with the redevelopment of the Cronulla Surf Club. The NSW government through the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has provided a $100,000 grant to combat illegal dumping of household waste at hotspots around home units in Cronulla, Caringbah and Menai. The project is part of the NSW government s state wide strategy to reduce the rate of illegal dumping by 30% by the year CRONULLA UPDATE / NOVEMBER 2018
Attorney General update 16 of the 17 major crime categories were stable or falling in NSW in the 24 months to June See: I introduced the first legislation of any state to join the National Redress Scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse. The scheme includes a redress payment up to $150,000, a direct response from the relevant institution and counselling. See: I introduced legislation for Australia s most comprehensive criminal law response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, including sentencing of offenders by today s tougher standards and new criminal offences of failure to report and failure to protect. See: I introduced legislation to overhaul civil litigation laws to enable thousands of survivors to sue institutions responsible for child abuse. See: I announced a review of the sexual consent provisions in the Crimes Act, to see if the law needs to be amended to protect victims better. See: With the Mental Health Minister, I announced stronger support for victims of offences committed by people with cognitive and mental health impairments, as part of an overhaul of the forensic mental health system. See: I introduced legislation to make individuals who incite or threaten violence against people based on their race, religion or sexuality liable to a 3-year jail sentence. See: 2z8ywmN I introduced legislation to give domestic violence victims greater protection with tougher strangulation laws and longer Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders. See: bit.ly/2nnezf3 I asked the Law Reform Commission to review laws about access to people s social media accounts and other digital assets after they die or become incapacitated. See: Birth registrations for babies born to Aboriginal mothers in NSW have almost doubled since the introduction of a new online registration system. CRONULLA UPDATE / NOVEMBER
