Airport News Around the Airfield : The Airport Operations Department In 2018, Morristown Airport will feature different organizations and individuals from around the airfield. In this first installment, we take an in-depth look at the Morristown Airport Operations Department A constant presence at Morristown Airport, the Operations Department is the eyes and ears of MMU. They are responsible for airport security, operating and maintaining the fuel farm, keeping the airfield safe and much more. Lead by Manager, Operations & Security, Peter Gilchrist A.A.E. and Operations Supervisor, Rosemary Rizzo A.A.E., the Operations Department is essential to keeping MMU running smoothly all year round. Scroll through our first installment of The Faces of MMU and learn more about the daily life in the Morristown Airport Operations Department. Morning Airfield Inspection At the beginning of each day, the first Operations Coordinator on duty conducts a morning airfield inspection. Airfield inspections consist of driving on runways and taxiways to make sure there is no Foreign Object Debris (FOD) that could impact arriving or departing traffic, checking that pavement is in good condition, checking that lights and signs are working properly, ensuring fencing is intact and secured and that there are no wildlife hazards. At the end of the inspection, the coordinator who records their findings and ensures any discrepancies are addressed. Morning Fuel Farm Inspection After the morning airfield inspection, Ops turns their attention to the fuel farm. The coordinator on duty in the morning starts by sumping the fuel tanks and filters and checks the fuel quality of each tank. Fuel quality checks consists of examining samples of fuel from all tanks for contaminates such as water and debris to ensure the fuel complies with A4A 103 standards. After that is completed, the Ops coordinator runs a check of all pumps and equipment to make sure everything is running smoothly for the day ahead. Safety checks of cameras, fire extinguishers and other security devices wraps up the morning fuel farm inspection. Page 1

Daily Office Work Following the morning airfield and fuel farm inspections, attention turns back to the Ops Office. Work begins with reviewing the previous night s activity log to record landings outside of Air Traffic Control operating hours, necessary NOTAMS for the day are reviewed, fuel sales from the day before are reviewed and confirmed, landing fees from the previous night are invoiced out and a call to the U.S. Customs & Border Protection office is placed to coordinate international arrivals for the day. A member of the Ops department must be present for all international arrivals to marshal aircraft. Airport News Customs Ramp Marshalling & Assistance One of the many features of Morristown Airport is having a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility on the airfield to accommodate international arrivals for tenants and transient users. Although there are full-time USCBP officers who handle the customs clearances, the Ops department acts as the liaison for U.S. Department of Agriculture in disposing of regulated garbage. Ops coordinators also marshal the aircraft onto the customs ramp and assist pilots new to the airfield with taxiing information. ID Badge Class Training One of the most important responsibilities for the Ops Department is airfield security and safety. Along with inspections, cameras, fencing, and more, the Ops Department relies on its tenants and airfield operators to report anything out of the ordinary. All tenants are required to complete the airport s security and safety training modules. The training modules revolve around airport security, airfield driving and fuel farm training. The 30-minute interactive training videos have questions that need to be answered correctly before passing the training. Page 2

Airport News Fuel Selling & Offloading If you drive by the fuel farm at Morristown Airport, you re likely to see two different types of trucks rotating in and out throughout the day. There are trucks that deliver fuel from off site and then there are trucks that take that fuel back to their hangars to fuel aircraft. In charge of it all is the Ops Department. Ops coordinators are responsible for ordering fuel from the provider as necessary, checking the inventory of the six Jet-A tanks and one AvGas tank, selling the fuel to tenants, making sure the farm is operating safely and efficiently and maintaining fuel quality and standards. Airfield Escorting Driving on the airfield is only allowed by those who are properly trained and signed off. However, with the amount of work that takes place on the airfield with outside contractors, training everyone isn t always feasible. Ops Coordinators are responsible for escorting vehicles and their equipment to the desired spot on the airfield to conduct work. Ops communicates with ground control and tower to safely maneuver around the airfield and make sure all parties are safe while conducting their work. Emergency Management Ops coordinators are primarily responsible for coordinating with all response units during an emergency. Whether incoming aircraft are experiencing issues, an alarm activates at a hangar or something in between, the Operations Department plays a crucial role in any event. Members of the Ops Department work with MMU s on-site Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Department, local Fire, Police and EMS departments, Air Traffic Control and other parties to ensure any potential or actual emergency is handled effectively. Page 3

Airport News Airport Tours The Ops Department plays a crucial role during Airport Tours. Between the months of May and September, the Airport Ops team gives tours of the facilities and equipment used here at MMU. Guests get a hands-on look at the daily operations of the airport from seeing the Ops Office, the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Department and more. If you would like to schedule a tour of Morristown Airport, please visit mmuair.com/community/airport-tour-info Tenant Communications & Relations Members of the Ops department must communicate effectively with tenants. Airfield conditions change continuously due to weather, construction, Temporary Flight Restrictions and other circumstances. It is crucial to airfield safety for the Ops Department to alert tenants of upcoming airfield status changes to ensure airfield safety and allow enough time for flight departments to adjust their plans. 6 Airport News MMU Announces 2018 Scholarship Availability; 8 Awards Available to Local Seniors We are very excited to be able to offer these scholarships to local students once again this year, said Airport Executive Director Bill Barkhauer. We understand the dedication it takes to be a well-rounded, successful student and it s rewarding to see those students recognized for their achievements. Hanover Township DM AIRPORTS, LTD., operators of Morristown Airport, is offering eight scholarships to members of the graduating classes of Morristown, Whippany Park, Hanover Park and Madison high schools for the 18th year. 8 CoMMUnity Messages Aircraft Engine Run-Up Policy Reminder MMU recognizes the importance of engine run-ups for flight safety, but also recognizes the impact this procedure can have on the airport and surrounding communities. This in turn created the airport engine run-up policy to ensure safe practices on the airport and to mitigate the potential noise impact on the surrounding communities, and to mitigate potential damage from using sustained high-power settings on the ground. Current policy states that jet aircraft must obtain permission from Airport Operations to conduct an engine run-up. There are four preferred engine run-up locations, and Airport Operations will assign each operator a location upon approval. Jet engine run-ups are permitted daily between 0830L and 2000L. If an engine run-up is required outside of those hours only the Airport Executive Director or Deputy Executive Director may approve it. Piston aircraft should perform engine runups in a location assigned by Air Traffic Control. At no time are aircraft permitted to conduct aircraft engine run-ups in the West Tie-Down or between any hangar rows. 11 Remembering Thor Solberg CoMMUnity Messages The Aviation Community lost one of its finer members in December when Thor Solberg passed away. He was 74 years old. Solberg s family owns Solberg Airport in Readington, New Jersey. Solberg was a pilot for United Airlines up until 2003 and flew the famed Queen of the Skies 747. An advocate for General Aviation, the Norwegian taught people how to fly, led charges for aviation issues and fought to keep Solberg Airport in his family for over a decade in court. Thor Solberg, airport owner, aviation advocate and former airline pilot, passed away at the age of 74. 12 Our MMU Family A Message From New NEC/AAAE President, DM AIRPORT S Maria Sheridan, A.A.E. Dear NEC Members and Friends, Happy New Year! I hope you all have weathered the January storms and are looking ahead to a happy, healthy and safe I am pleased to say that we have an exciting year planned and hope that you will benefit from all the Northeast Chapter has to offer. I want to take the opportunity to thank you for allowing me to serve as your Chapter s President in It is a privilege to serve an organization that has nurtured my professional development and enhanced the careers of so many airport executives. NEC/AAAE is truly a great organization built on the efforts of so many caring and talented people. I will be joined on the executive committee by Vice President, Ed Foster, AAE, Treasurer, Carl Braley, AAE, Secretary, Lisa Gardner, AAE, Past President Jim Walsh, AAE and our Executive Secretary, Dick Williams, AAE. Together we will strive, to help make the most of your membership by providing an array of educational programs, mentoring opportunities, and conferences designed to foster innovation and camaraderie. So, if you are not currently a member, or need to renew your dues, please do so, here is not only a special year for me, but it is also a special year for our Chapter. This year we celebrate our 60th Anniversary, and I am grateful to be the sixth female president representing you, our membership. In addition, on the national level with our parent organization, AAAE, our Chapter s Past President, Jeanne Olivier, will ascend to the Chairperson s position. She too will be the sixth female Chair of the national association. With that in mind, one of my goals this year is to focus on women in aviation and challenge the Chapter to support AAAE s Women in Aviation Scholarship Fund. I initially set the goal at $6,000, but I think as a Chapter, we can far exceed that. We have decided to dedicate this contribution to an amazing corporate member that we lost in 2017, Claudia Holliway. Please support this worthy cause by clicking here. Additionally, we will have opportunities to contribute at all our conferences leading up to our Annual Conference in August, where the check will be presented to Todd Hauptli, President & CEO of AAAE. I not only want to focus on women in aviation in 2018, but I also want to encourage and promote the pipeline of young adults starting out in our industry and help student members that are considering making airports and aviation their career. If you are a student member, we encourage you to be active in the Chapter and take advantage of the many networking opportunities with the Chapter s industry professionals and apply to our grants which can be found on our website. If you are an executive, associate, or corporate member, I encourage you to become a mentor or advisor to our young professionals and work with our Academic Committee. In addition, I encourage you to take advantage of our professional development grants and scholarships. To start the year, we have our Airports Conference in Hershey, PA from March 11th-14th. It is the NEC s second year hosting this conference with several educational tracks that include FAA participation and continuing education credits. Our second conference of the year is our International Aviation Snow Symposium in Buffalo, NY from April 14th-18th. The Symposium will once again include our Basic and Advanced Snow Academies and a new Mechanics Forum along with the annual Balchen/Post Awards. This summer our Chapter s Hub Winter Operations & Deicing Conference, co-hosted with AAAE will be held in Salt Lake City, July 8th- 10th. We will also offer our Snow academies at this western venue. Page 11

Our MMU Family Our fourth and final conference of 2018 is the 60th Anniversary Annual NEC/AAAE Reimagine the Way We Fly Conference in the New York area, August 11th-14th. We have selected the Hyatt Regency Jersey City, NJ. While the hotel has a New Jersey address, it is literally over the Hudson River with a fantastic view of the World Trade Center and New York City. We have negotiated a special rate of $209 per night (plus tax) and a parking rate of $25 per day (reduced from $38) which will be available for the remainder of the week following the conference. Access to NYC is convenient via the PATH train, across the street from the Hyatt, or by New York Waterway Ferry, adjacent to the hotel. Sightseeing options are too numerous to list, and we will offer many great choices as part of our program, including a four-hour sightseeing dinner cruise on Monday evening. Please visit the Chapter website for all the details. We expect this conference to have record attendance, so please make your reservations and register early. I would be remiss if I didn t thank Past President Jim Walsh, AAE for his service and dedication in Jim s vision of an engaged and growing membership has translated to a double-digit percentage increase in membership. Jim, along with the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and our organization s professional management company, ADG, worked hard to keep the Chapter on a solid financial footing. We will continue on this path with the creation of a Finance and Audit Committee that will be chaired by Past President, Nino Sapone, AAE. Nino and his committee will review and analyze the Chapter s financials and fee structures and will make recommendations to the Executive Committee. I am looking forward to all the great events and seeing many of you throughout the year. Please feel free to reach out to me or our Chapter s Program Manager, Ari Gimbel with any questions or suggestions you may have. Sign Up for MMU Alerts! Click on the image below Page 12
