This quarterly Morristown Airport (MMU) E-Newsletter is a joint publication from DM AIRPORTS, LTD. (Operators of Morristown Airport), MAA (Morristown Aviation Association) and MAPA (Morristown Airport Pilot s Association). All issues are available at AIRPORT NEWS Firefighter Recognized for Rescue by Doug Reighard, MARS/ARFF-Fire Chief On September 15 th Firefighter Richard VanDeursen received the ARFF Working Group s "Merit Award" at the 2015 ARFF Working Group Annual Conference & Education Symposium held in Atlanta GA. Firefighter VanDeursen was recognized for his outstanding efforts in rescuing an injured worker from the collapsed hangar at 6 Airport Road on January 16, Firefighter VanDeursen entered the partially collapsed area placing himself in harm s way, assessed the patient, packaged him, and removed the injured worker to safety. Firefighter VanDeursen operated under extremely dangerous conditions for a period of time under the unstable structure to insure the injured worker was safely removed. We are proud of Rich for being the recipient of the Merit Award and for his efforts that day! Firefighter VanDeursen receiving his award from the ARFF working group Newsletter 1

Winter is Coming! by Peter Gilchrist, A.A.E., DM-Manager, Operations & Security DM AIRPORTS, Ltd. (DM) will host the annual Corporate Tenant Snow Meeting on Thursday, November 12 th at 8:30 am in the DM Conference Room at 8 Airport Road. We will discuss snow removal operations at MMU. Hangar managers, chief pilots, and any tenant's snow removal contractor are strongly encouraged to attend. Bagels will be served. Please R.S.V.P. to Peter Gilchrist at PeterG@mmuair.com. Fly Friendlier at MMU by Cesar Salazar, DM-Operations Coordinator As we approach the season of giving and the extremely crowded shopping malls, we embrace a period of clear blue skies and cooler weather. Our neighbors are happily turning off their air conditioners and are enjoying the nice crisp air flowing through their windows. Please remember to use our noise abatement procedures while flying the skies around MMU. We humbly ask that while planning your flight, you keep in mind the noise sensitive areas around MMU and try to remain as high as possible when arriving and departing the Airport. This way we can all enjoy this year s autumn and all that it has to offer. If you would like copies of the Airport s noise abatement procedures or helicopter noise abatement video, please call ext. 122 or noise@mmuair.com. Thank you for flying friendly at MMU! Vigilance Needed! by Joey Cathcart, DM-Operations Coordinator Morristown Airport is home to a diverse population of aviation professionals. We are pilots, maintenance technicians, customers, line service providers, air traffic controllers, and airport operators. Although our roles at the airport may differ in many respects, there is one role that is of utmost importance to all airport users, keeping the Airport secure. Many layers are in place to ensure security at MMU, but you, the airport user, are the critical first line of defense. Together, we are the eyes and ears of the airport. It is the responsibility of every airport user to be aware of their surroundings and report any unusual activity. Remember, if you see something, say something. Challenging is another way your actions enhance airport security. When evaluating whether or not to challenge someone, consider having another person accompany you. If you are able, notify someone of your location and provide a description of the individual being challenged. Introduce yourself and ask if you can help. Remember to be polite. The challenging procedure it not meant to intimidate. If you find that the individual being challenged does not have a valid reason to be at the Airport, it is your responsibility to escort him or her out of the secure area. If you do not feel comfortable escorting an unknown person, contact Airport Operations. Only approach individuals if you are confident you are not entering a threatening situation. If something looks out of place, call Airport Operations. If you sense a potentially dangerous situation, however, do not hesitate to call 911 immediately. At no time should you put yourself in harm s way. Again, security is the responsibility of everyone working and operating at the Airport. If you have any questions or would like further clarification on challenging procedures at Morristown airport, please contact Airport Operations at extension 116 or Newsletter 2

Wildlife Gets Busy by Gary Trotta, DM-Operations Coordinator As the leaves start to turn and the air becomes crisp, we all suddenly realize the dog days of summer have come to a swift end. The deeper we get into fall, the more we notice a spike in wildlife activity of major concern to aircraft. There are several types of wildlife that become extra lively in the fall: starlings, deer, and geese. A large flock of starlings in flight Starlings, active primarily in the late summer and early fall, are extremely hazardous despite the small size, as they travel in large flocks and do not scare easily. Deer become more active, especially mid- November, as this time is known as the rutting season. The rut is the time of mating for deer. Bucks will become more active and less cautious of their surroundings. Another major wildlife hazard to aviation is geese. Geese are large in size and mass and can cause major damage and safety risks to aircraft. As geese begin their fall migrations, they stop to feed along the way, making for an increase in activity, both in the air and on the ground, around the airport. Airport Operations, along with the Airport s Wildlife Management Team, and the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) department, perform daily inspections to drive wildlife away from the aircraft operating areas for the safety of all of the airports users. Should you see any wildlife activity on or around the Airport, please notify the control tower when they are open 0645L-2230L. When the control tower is closed, please contact the ARFF department on the CTAF (118.10) or to perform wildlife inspections before your operations at the airport. ARFF Training Goes Live by Doug Reighard, MARS/ARFF-Fire Chief Now that summer is over and we moved into the fall, the Morristown ARFF department continues to train for the many different types of incidents we are tasked to handle here at MMU. On October 16 th, four members of the ARFF department participated in fire training at the Monroe County Fire Training Center in Rochester NY for their annual live burns. The members conducted training on simulated emergencies involving three dimensional fuel fires, wheel fires and engine fires with hand lines and utilizing the facility s rescue vehicles. They also conducted training on fighting interior cabin fires and trained on rescuing passengers and crew.. Annual live burn training at the Monroe County Fire Training Center in Rochester, NY Newsletter 3

This training is required to meet the FAA standard for ARFF fire fighters and must be conducted every year. As you can see, we train regularly throughout the year to provide the best possible service to everyone here at MMU. The members of the ARFF department would also like to wish you all a safe and happy Holiday Season! CoMMUnity Historic Aircraft Return by Joshua Moyer, C.M., DM-Operations Coordinator Since 1979, the Collings Foundation has acquired over 25 historic aircraft representing the progression of military aircraft used in the 20 th century. Of these 25, the Collings Foundation brought four aircraft to MMU for the fourth year in a row, this past September, as part of their Wings of Freedom Tour. The aircraft on display included the B-17 Flying Fortress, the world s only flying B-24 Liberator, the P-51 Mustang, and the B-25 Mitchell, most famous for the Doolittle Raid on Japan. This collection of over 14,000 horsepower was on static display from September 8 th to the 10 th. Despite poor weather at the end of the week, over 1,500 people took the time to view some true living history. Attendees had full access to the aircraft, and Collings Foundation volunteers were on hand to provide information and explanations of the role these aircraft played during World War II. B-24 Liberator in flight A few visitors took the opportunity to fly on the aircraft after making donations to the Collings Foundation. Signature Flight Support provided ramp space, parking for the static display, as well as room for spectators as the aircraft departed on scenic rides and flight training missions. A special thank you is in order for all of the Collings Foundation Volunteers, Signature Flight Support employees, and the local photographers and reporters who helped spread the word of this fantastic event. We hope to host the Collings Foundation again next year. For more information on the Collings Foundation and their aircraft, please visit COMMITTEES & MESSAGES Membership The next MAA meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 4 th, from 10:00am to noon in the DM/Airport Administration Conference Room. Please attend and consider joining MAA if you are not already a member. 5 Message from the MAA Chairperson A new attitude of FAA enforcement It has been amazing to watch this protocol change over the years. Every decade it would seem, or maybe it just coincides with changes in upper FAA management personnel, the FAA Administrator fluctuates how they act on certificate action for mechanics and pilots. If you have been lucky enough to keep your head down and not had any potential certificate actions, warning letters, administration letters, or the like recently, you will most likely not know that the general philosophy over the last decade, or so, has been wrapped around enforcement. What did that look like? Let s say that you are a pilot and inadvertently flew through a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR). Up until October 1st of this year, more than likely, you were in the certificate preservation mode and dealt with inspectors that had very little choice as to the path of punishment. Effective this date however, the philosophy has changed back to what it was many years ago; with more focus on cooperation and training and less on certificate action. The days of writing enforcement letters are not over I m sure, but the attitude of remedial training, done directly with FAA personnel or other outside vendors, is the prevailing process. I commend the FAA for taking this position; both from a training and from a certificate action perspective. Being directly involved in training, (I am biased, I know) certificate action in response to mistakes does little to make positive changes when, in my professional opinion, training was all that was needed. Maybe it was training on situational awareness, the creation of flight department protocols or policies, basic airman skills or just another layer of oversight, but in my experience, training usually could have or did solve the root cause. The last several years of enforcement have also caused a backlog of certificate action. Cases where certificate action took up to a year to start the process and then many months to close seemed useless to the individuals involved. In several cases, the certificate holders had left that job or moved to a completely different job only to be brought back to a mistake that took place long ago and then had to defend themselves. The impact financially was also devastating. It seemed that attorneys on both sides were they only winners based upon this philosophy. I look forward to this renewed sense of cooperation from FAA personnel for all actions; be it personal certificate action or operator action. Only time will tell as to the effect of this. In my tenure in this business, it has changed several times; the fundamental reason is unknown. We can only hope that this renewed line of thinking will be here to stay. Randall (Randy) Wood Chairman, MAA (201) Message from MAPA Winter is fast approaching! Let s hope it is not as bad as last year!! It s that time of year to remind everyone it is time to prepare for the cold weather. PLAN AHEAD!! Ready your aircraft, preheaters, snow removal equipment, etc. for the cold now so that the wintry weather won t play havoc with engines, airplanes, and tenants. Be sure to check your tire pressures, especially as the temperature drops. Also, as part of your preflight, include checking your pitot heat, vent heaters and stall warning heaters (if they are installed on your aircraft) for proper operation. Do you have the proper grade of oil in your aircraft for winter operation? Do you have a plan to deal with frost and ice removal on your aircraft? Do you put extra clothes in the aircraft when you fly? As a reminder, when possible, avoid taxiing through water puddles, slush, or snow. The water on your aircraft may freeze at higher altitudes which could cause serious problems. As we move into the winter season, there is something positive to look forward to in the New Year. MARK YOUR CALENDARS. The Morristown Airport Pilots Association s (MAPA) Annual Anti- Winter Party is Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016 at the Hanover Manor, East Hanover, NJ. So, dust off your dancing shoes and start counting the days for another wonderful evening of great music, food, and chatting with old and new friends. NOTE: While MAPA would appreciate membership support, you do not have to be a MAPA to attend. The party is open to our friends and associates at MMU and their guests. If you do not receive an e mail party notice by mid-december, please e mail Len at leonardlevy@sprintmail.com, to get a copy of the flyer. Newsletter 5

MAPA wants to take this opportunity to thank our tower personnel for their good service. We also want to thank the DM personnel for supporting MAPA activities and watching over our aircraft. We look forward to their excellent service with the snow removal and their support in the coming year. Not to be forgotten are the ARFF personnel. They have our backs and are ready to help whenever needed. Let s all be good neighbors and fly quiet and fly safe.
