This quarterly Morristown Airport (MMU) E-Newsletter is a joint publication from DM AIRPORTS, LTD. (Operators of Morristown Airport), MAA (Morristown Aviation Association) and MAPA (Morristown Airport Pilot s Association). This issue, as well as previous issues, is available at Table of Contents: Airport News Page 1 CoMMUnity Page 4 Committees & Messages Page 6 Our Airport Family Page 8 AIRPORT NEWS Construction Updates by Keith Stover, DM- Operations Coordinator Two years ago Morristown Airport began the first phase of a long term project to rehabilitate the keel of Runway The keel section of a runway is the thickened pavement that makes up the center portion of the runway. The keel of runway 5-23, Morristown s primary runway, is the airport s most critical infrastructure. The Keel Repair Project is part of a larger Runway Rehabilitation Project that involves the standardization of the Runway Safety Areas, including the installation of an engineered materials arrestor system (EMAS) to the approach of Runway 5. The Runway Rehabilitation Project will also include the installation of a new medium intensity approach lighting system at the approach of Runway 23. Finally, the entire runway will be paved and re-lighted and the entrance/exit taxiways will be rehabilitated. The first phase of the Keel Repair Project commenced on September 23 rd, The northernmost 1,100 of Runway 5-23 was milled and then replaced with new super pave asphalt 9 deep x 50 wide. Scheduled Runway 5-23 Closures Wednesday August 12th from L Thursday August 13th from L Friday August 14th from L Saturday August 15th from L Sunday August 16th from L Monday August 17th from L Tuesday August 18th from L Morristown Airport closed to fixed wing aircraft: Wednesday August 12th from L Rain date: Thursday August 13th from L The 2014 construction season addressed the second phase of the project, repairing the next 1,200 section. The work was scheduled to take fourteen days, weather permitting, but was completed in ten. Newsletter 1

Originally, DM AIRPORTS, LTD. had planned to continue tackling this project approximately 1,000 at a time due to budget constraints. However, Morristown Airport recently received notification that it will be receiving a grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for the Runway 5-23 Keel Repair Project. This funding will allow for the completion of the remaining work to be accomplished in a single event rather than the forecasted three events. Due to the timing of the grant funding, this single event will take place during the 2016 construction season. The 2015 construction season will focus on other aspects of our long term Runway Rehabilitation Project and will necessitate closing Runway These closures are to allow for necessary maintenance work, scheduled surveying, installation of ground water monitoring wells, and geotechnical studies necessary for the advancement of the larger Runway Safety Area. Fuel Farm Renovation by Peter Gilchrist, A.A.E., DM-Manager, Operations & Security This August, work will begin to rehabilitate Morristown Airport s fuel farm. This rehabilitation project will update the majority of the infrastructure. This includes new pumps, filtration, fire suppression, lighting, a new avgas tank, storm water controls, and canopies over both the tanks and the fueling islands. Upon completion, the new fuel farm will be able to meet changing environmental and safety regulations well into the future. The project is expected to take between seven and nine months to complete depending on the severity of the coming winter. Work is scheduled to begin August 3 rd. The scheduled Runway 5-23 closures are as follows: Wednesday, August 12th from L Thursday, August 13th from L Friday, August 14th from L Saturday, August 15th from L Sunday, August 16th from L Monday, August 17th from L Tuesday, August 18th from L Morristown Airport will be closed to fixed wing aircraft on: Wednesday, August 12th from 1200 to 1300L with a rain date of Thursday, August 13th from 1200 to 1300L Should you have any questions regarding the Keel Repair Project or the larger Runway Rehabilitation Project, please contact: Peter J.W. Gilchrist, A.A.E., Manager, Operations & Security at peterg@mmuair.com or ext. 146 or Darren S. Large, A.A.E., Manager, Facilities & Projects at darrenl@mmuair.com or ext. 135 The current Fuel farm with trucks in the loading area A temporary fuel farm is currently being assembled in the West Tie Down to prepare for the closure and rehabilitation of the existing fuel farm. Working with World Fuels, DM AIRPORTS, LTD. has sourced two jet fuel tanks, two jet pumping skids, and an avgas trailer with attached pump and filtration. These resources will allow the airport to have some redundancy should any portion of the system go down for maintenance. The temporary fuel farm facility will have full secondary containment and full filtration capabilities, ensuring it is capable of safely selling clean dry jet fuel. It will however not be able to pump fuel at the same speeds as the existing or future fuel farm, as its pumps are rated at 200 gallons per minute. It is anticipated that the Newsletter 2

temporary fuel farm will be operational in early August. ARFF Chief s Chat by Doug Reighard, MARS/ARFF-Fire Chief As the Airport Fire Chief, it is with great pride that I announce that Firefighter Richard VanDeursen will receive the ARFF Working Group s "Merit Award" at the 2015 ARFF Working Group Annual Conference & Education Symposium to be held in September in Atlanta GA. Firefighter VanDeursen is being recognized for his outstanding efforts in rescuing an injured worker from the collapsed hangar at 6 Airport Road on January 16, Firefighter VanDeursen entered the partially collapsed area placing himself in harm s way, assessed the patient, packaged him, and removed the injured worker to safety. Firefighter VanDeursen operated under extremely dangerous conditions for a period of time under the unstable structure to insure the injured worker was safely removed. We are proud of Rich for being the recipient of the Merit Award and for his efforts that day! Firefighter Richard VanDeursen is the most senior ARFF firefighter at Morristown Airport. Rich began his career as a Reserve Firefighter here at MMU on June 1, In June of 2006 Rich transferred from reserve to full time status. He has been a firefighter since 1994 and has served his local communities as a volunteer firefighter in many positions over the years. Recently Rich has redeveloped our in-house ARFF training program and is responsible for managing the monthly training program. He ensures our members train to the same level and ensures their competency across the board. Rich is a huge asset to our team and we are happy to have him around. The ARFF Working Group is the only worldwide Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) organization and is well respected in the aviation industry. It is an organization that ARFF firefighters turn to, to share information, receive training and is the group the FAA and ICAO turn to, to advance our segment of the aviation industry forward throughout the world. Firefighter Richard VanDeursen Aircraft Security by Rosemary Rizzo, A.A.E., ACE, DM Operations Supervisor There are many levels of airport security that can be found at Morristown Airport. In particular we will focus on aircraft security. The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) requires that all aircraft parked or stored for more than a 24-hour period at any airport in the State, use a combination of two locking devices to secure or disable the aircraft in order to reduce its chances of being tampered with or misused. Newsletter 3 You are in compliance if your aircraft door is locked and the aircraft has a key operated magneto/starter switch. Other ways to lock or disable your aircraft can include a throttle lock, mixture lock, prop lock, or wheel lock. If your aircraft is locked inside of a hangar, the hangar

would count as one lock in a two-lock system. You would still need a second method of locking or disabling the aircraft. The fenced-in and gated areas at the airport do not count as a lock. The NJDOT conducts periodic security audits of the airport, and the two-lock system is enforced. For more information please visit: viation/twolock.shtm CoMMUnity Mid-Atlantic Aviation Coalition (MAAC) General Aviation Conference - Airport Day by Gloria Baird, DM Operations Coordinator This year Morristown Airport was pleased to host the second day of the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Coalition s annual New Jersey General Aviation Conference. Arnie Itzkowitz opened the day speaking about his experiences and the tools he utilizes for his aerial photography business. David W. Jones, P.E., C.M. of Delta Airport Consultants presented how general aviation aircraft can be both toys and tools, specifically referencing how his Beechcraft Baron has benefited his business endeavors. Attendees at the MAAC General Aviation Conference, Airport Day, held at MMU The day was punctuated with airport experiences where attendees were able to tour the Air Traffic Control Tower, Airport Fire Department, Airport Operations Center, and view the equipment from our snow removal fleet up close. The Central Jersey Aviation Education Science Club provided children s activities and other exhibitors included the Morristown Aviation Association, American Flyers, FTC FBO, Nova Aviation, Cirrus Aircraft, and the New Jersey 99s. The event ended with Bob Thorson of the FAA Safety Team teaching a seminar for Wings Credit. Major sponsors of this event were Signature Flight Support, Cirrus Aircraft, and World Fuel Network. Additional sponsors were American Flyers, ATP, Nova Aviation, FTC FBO, and Morristown Airport Pilots Association. Aircraft Noise by Rosemary Rizzo, A.A.E., ACE, DM Operations Supervisor Aircraft noise and its impact on local communities is always a topic of conversation around any airport. The sound produced by aircraft can be an inconvenience or interference for some people that live nearby. Recognizing this, the airport is continually working with operators to improve the sound environment at and around the airport. One of the first steps in understanding noise concerns is to take them seriously, which we do. The varied types and sizes of aircraft have different noise impacts. We then research each and every noise complaint and evaluate the circumstances to determine the best way to proceed. Recently, the airport has been working specifically with helicopter operators. A rise in complaints has led to the extended outreach in order to help provide relief from the noise. As always, safety and separation are of highest importance over noise abatement, but educating helicopter operators about our noise abatement procedures and techniques has been making an improvement. We encourage all helicopter operators to maintain as high an altitude as possible when arriving into MMU and to gain as much altitude as possible prior to departing the airport boundary. We also request that helicopter operators utilizing FTC FBO land at the intersection of taxiways Bravo and Charlie and taxi via Charlie and Lima into the ramp. Operators using Signature Flight Support are asked to land at the intersection of taxiways Alpha and Echo or Alpha and Delta and then taxi onto the ramp. We appreciate airport users who choose to fly neighborly and we encourage you to view our noise abatement procedures at If you have any questions, concerns or would like copies of our noise abatement procedures or helicopter noise abatement video please contact us at (973) ext. 122 or noise@mmuair.com. 5 Commemorative Air Force Visits MMU by Brian Degen, DM-Operations Intern On June 3 rd, Morristown Airport took great pleasure in hosting the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) with three of their airworthy WWII aircraft. The CAF brought two of the rarest bombers in the World; FIFI, the only B-29 Superfortress that is still in airworthy condition and Diamond Lil, a B- 24 Liberator. Accompanying these two bombers was their smaller and sleeker C-45 transport plane. During their visit here at Morristown, the planes were available for rides to those visitors that had made reservations, and were opened to the public so young and old alike could get an up close look at these three aircraft that made so much history throughout the mid-1900s. FIFI, the B-29 Superfortress, made its maiden flight in 1942 and entered service for the United States Army Air Corps in The B-29 played a valuable role throughout WWII, excelled at high altitude strategic bombing, and was effective at low level bombing runs at night. These planes are well known for their iconic role in the atomic bombings on Japan during WWII. After the war, the B-29s were used for several public relation flights and saw three years of service in the Korean War before being retired in June Today, only 22 of these beautiful iconic warbirds are preserved around the world, with only one in flyable condition, FIFI. Accompanying FIFI this past visit was Diamond Lil, a B-24 Bomber that rolled off the assembly line in Put into service as a cargo carrier during the war, Diamond Lil was purchased by the CAF in 1967 and flew all over the country to different events and was used in several movies. Diamond Lil is one of two B-24s that are still flying today out of the roughly 18,000 B-24s that were produced. These beautiful aircraft would not be able to make all these trips if it was not for one small little plane, known by the CAF as the Bucket of Bolts. This C-45 transport aircraft often accompanies its bigger counterparts on many of their trips. The C-45, made by Beechcraft, was based off of the civilian Model 18 which first flew in 1937, and saw service with the United States Air Force between 1946 and Beechcraft continued to produce Model 18s up until 1970, when it ceased operations, with just over 9000 Model 18s and variants produced. The CAF travels the country spreading the history and the sounds of these historic machines. This past visit was very special for Morristown Airport. Seeing Diamond Lil return to an airport she once was based at was a magnificent sight to behold. In 1951, Diamond Lil officially called Morristown Airport her home at hangar 5. During her residence at Morristown, Diamond Lil was used for corporate transport flying all over the country. In 1961, it was with great sadness that Morristown had to say good-bye to this beautiful aircraft, and watched her take off for the last time, headed to Latin America where she would spend the next 6 years before being purchased by the CAF. Morristown Airport was honored to have had the opportunity to host the CAF and to help support these three magnificent warbirds s Poker Run by Gloria Baird, DM Operations Coordinator On May 31 st, Morristown Airport was pleased to once again be a stop for the New Jersey 99s Poker Run. This event raised funds for the Dodie and David Riach Memorial Scholarship presented to as many as three individuals every December. The day had a rough beginning due to weather, but thanks to a delayed start time, the event was able to continue as planned. Participants flew the circuit collecting playing cards at several airports in order to build a five card hand that was tallied and ranked at the final airport. Prizes ranged from two airline tickets, headsets, and a variety of exciting gift baskets. Operations Coordinator Keith Stover with Keith Adler of the Skywagon Flying Club participating in the Poker Run Keith Stover from Airport Operations had the opportunity to participate firsthand by flying in a C182 and said, It was a great experience for a worthy cause. I was impressed with all the effort put in from the members of the 99s and all of the Newsletter 5

host airports. It seemed like everyone had a great time and there was a lot of participation. Besides MMU, sponsor airports consisted of: South Jersey, Ocean City, Monmouth, and Blairstown. For more information about the scholarship or the New Jersey 99s please visit Save the Date! The Collings Foundation Returns in September! by Darren Large, A.A.E., DM-Manager, Facilities & Projects We are pleased to announce that the Collings Foundation will be returning for another visit to MMU from September 8-10, The Collings Foundation is a non-profit educational foundation that preserves historic military aircraft and tours them around the country. Since 1979 they have acquired over 25 restored historic aircraft that represent a progression of military aircraft developed during the 20th century. This year the foundation will again be bringing their B-17, a P-51C Mustang, and a B-24. During their stay, each event attendee will be granted full access to tour and take pictures of each aircraft inside and out. These walk-through tours will cost $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. WWII veterans get into the ground tours at no charge. Parking is free and the event will be held on the apron at Signature Flight Support FBO. A Family Reunion by Maria Sheridan, A.A.E., DM-Sr. Director, Government Affairs & Business Development Over a year ago, MMU and the Aéroports de Cote D Azur (ACA) entered into a formal sister airport relationship that has created the opportunity for the two to collaborate and promote each other s airports. Maria Sheridan, Sr. Director, Government Affairs & Business Development, had the opportunity to visit her new family of three airports ACA operates in the south of France before attending the European Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition (EBACE) tradeshow. Maria and her brother Umberto outside the General Aviation Terminal at Nice Airport The two day tour, led by Michel Tohane-Nunez and Umberto Vallino, encompassed visits of the landside and airside portions of Cannes, Nice and St Tropez Airports. In addition to the tour, the group discussed how each of the airports operate, their targeted users, marketing goals and best practices. It was a fun and educational opportunity for all. COMMITTEES & MESSAGES The P-51C Mustang at MMU in 2014 For those who really want to get the full experience of these magnificent machines, 30 minute flights will be offered to those willing to make a donation to the foundation. For more information on the Collings Foundation, go to ATC Update Total traffic for April 2015 was down 3.2% compared to April There were 9 days of delays attributed to sector volume. Total traffic for May 2015 was up 9.2% compared to May There were 15 days of delays due to sector volume and weather. Newsletter 6

Total traffic for June 2015 was down 13.9% compared to June There were 6 days of delays mostly attributed to sector volume and weather. Membership The next MAA meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 2nd, from 10:00am to noon in the DM/Airport Administration Conference Room. Please attend and consider joining MAA if you are not already a member. Message from the MAA Chairperson The act of ATC Privatization: Wow, just the thought of this actually taking place is quite scary and brings a slew of questions moving forward. What would happen to the present ATC system and personnel? What about the large long-term goals of the national airspace designs? What assurances will the general public get once the Air Traffic Control system begins to run on a forprofit mentality? These and so much more are just a fraction of behind-the-scene discussions that our congress is wrestling with. Without my personal beliefs and thoughts in this, anyone in the aviation business would be impacted; the only unknown is whether it s good or bad. I am not here to preach that impact but to instill a plug that your voice needs to be heard. If you ever have written to your congressional representative in the past, it can be quite a laborious process. NBAA has made that process so much easier and thus gives us little excuse to not make this happen. The hyperlink to this is: From there you have the choice to contact your congressional representatives via or Twitter. Click on whichever option you are most comfortable using. The link only requires you to insert a few bits of personal information such as name, address, phone number and company information. Once you submit your information, an will be sent on your behalf. NBAA s webpage provides this option to send directly to your representatives and also will provide a copy back to you. The hyperlinks also allow standard verbiage to be sent or you can edit your position to a more personal level. If you have a twitter, you can simply include the hash tag #NoUserFees in your twitter post to the government officials such or use the link above to use an automated tweet. If you are not comfortable using technology to convey your messages, feel free to write a letter to your government officials and send via mail. If you are in need of a letter template, please contact us and we can provide that for you. Congressional representatives tell us that this is simply a numbers game; providing our representatives with the background needed to represent each of their respective districts accurately. Even though there are many priorities for our aviation community to wrestle with, I would ask that you take just a few minutes and make the above happen. If you do not provide separate or edited verbiage, the entire process will take less than 5 minutes. I cannot emphasize the importance of making your voice heard on this subject no matter what side of the fence you stand on. If you need help in making this happen, I would offer my office assistance in helping you. Please reach out to my office staff, notably Abbey Lenhart or myself for assistance. Thank you in being a part of this vital process! Randall (Randy) Wood Chairman, MAA (201) Message from MAPA Summer is here and is flying by. Summer also presents many challenges is the heat, and we are seeing some very high temperatures. Besides being uncomfortable, there is no air conditioning in most light aircraft, so it is something to consider before heading to the airport. Another factor to consider in your pre-flight planning is DENSITY ALTITUDE! As the temperature goes up, your aircraft performance goes down. It is suggested that you review FAA-H A (pages 3-3 & 3-4, + other references listed in the index) to see how the higher temperatures affect the performance of your aircraft. You should also check your Pilot s Operating Handbook (POH) and do some calculating for the higher temperatures, as you do for performance at higher altitudes. Newsletter 7

With the high temperatures, consider pilot/passenger dehydration (cabins can get really warm!). Have something (non-alcoholic) to drink before your flight and bring something with you on your flight as well. For those West Tie down/t-hangar tenants (and guests), MAPA has a soda machine in the storage locker area located on the west side of the tie down. Soda is a bargain at 50 /can (quarters only please!) If you are an aircraft owner, perform a good preflight! Pay special attention to areas where difficulties may occur. Some examples are: pitot tubes, fuel vents, static ports, air inlets, etc. Carefully check for fuel contamination (usually water) before each flight and after refueling. (Warm days and cold nights lead to condensation!) Allow time after fueling before sampling. For the non-aircraft owner, you too have to do a good preflight. Never assume that the person who flew before you checked everything! One thing to be aware of is that the bees and wasps are out and building their homes. They like places where they can t be readily observed. Any opening is fair game. While many of them like to go for the ride, there are those who become unfriendly! Always check your air inlets before flight. (I recommend that you tap in the area of the opening and, if you have anything that flies or crawls out to greet you, find out where they were and try to get rid of them before flight). None of us want to share the cabin with something that can do you harm and distract you. If you get something in the cockpit, remember to fly the aircraft. NOISE. Windows are open, neighbors are sitting outside and there is more awareness of aircraft noise. Let s be Good Neighbors and observe the Airport s Noise Abatement procedures. Yes, there are Noise abatement procedures at the airport. If you are unaware of these procedures, flyers are available at the MMU Operations office which define the procedures and policy for small aircraft or go mmuair.com under the tab for pilots. For those of you who plan far ahead, the MAPA Anti-Winter Party is scheduled for January 30, 2016 (Saturday). Mark your Calendar. It is an open party, the more the merrier!! Enjoy the good weather and fly Safe!! Len Levy Morristown Airport Pilots Association OUR AIRPORT FAMILY Congratulations Maria and Rosemary!
