2 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND In 1902, US Cavalry established Clark as Fort Stotsenberg Named after Col. John M. Stotsenberg Killed in Action in the Philippines, April 23, 1899 at the Battle of Quingua (now Plaridel, Bulacan) during the Philippine- American War

3 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND In 1908, US Pres. Theodore Roosevelt increased the size of the Fort to 63,214 has. In 1917, eastern portion of Fort Stotsenberg was converted into an air field Theodore Roosevelt In 1919, the Fort was renamed Clark Air Field

4 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Attended the American High School in Manila; he graduated April 1, He was the first United States airman to fly the first inter-island flight ever made in the Hawaiian Islands in Mar. 15, 1918 He died on May 2, 1919 in a seaplane crash in the Miraflores Locks, Panama Canal Zone
