4 GENERAL INFORMATION Passport & Visa A valid international passport is required for all travellers entering Australia. The passport must have at least 6 months validity from the date of return to Singapore. Electronic visas are required for Singaporeans entering Australia. These will be issued for the group. Customs & Immigration Plants, raw meat and animal products are prohibited. Food items have to be declared at customs upon arrival, or travellers risk an A$10,000 fine. Emergency Number in Australia For ambulance, fire and police: 000 (free call) Climate It is late spring in Australia during your period of travel. Sunrise is around 5.15am, and sunset around 6.45pm. Temperatures are expected to be between C in the day, but can dip to C in the evenings. Time There is no time difference between and Singapore. Electricity The electrical system in Australia uses the 220V AC. You will need a 2 or 3-pin flat-angled travel adaptor. Currency Australian dollar: AUD 1.04 SGD 1 Please change your currency in Singapore before your trip. Expected Expenditure ALL MEALS WILL BE PROVIDED Souvenirs or Gifts for family: A$ Do not bring more than A$200 Telephone You can make long distance telephone calls from any public telephone and the hotels in Australia. Telephone calls in the hotels are subject to service charges and are based on prevailing hotel telephone rates. A call-back service, which is cheaper, is available when you are overseas with auto-roaming facilities. You may follow the dialling procedure given below for this service. All containers must fit in a transparent re-sealable bag of no larger than 1 litre. 8 D If an emergency occurs Follow the directions of teachers-in-charge. E.g. During an Earthquake If you're indoors, stay there. Get under -- and hold onto --a desk or table, or stand against an interior wall. Stay clear of exterior walls, glass, heavy furniture, fireplaces and appliances. If you're outside, get into the open. Stay clear of buildings, power lines or anything else that could fall on you. If you re in a crowded public place, avoid panicking and do not rush for the exit. Stay low and cover your head and neck with your hands and arms. 9 GENERAL RULES 1. Pride yourself as an ambassador of Singapore and St. Andrew s Junior School. Always project a good image and make us proud of you. 2. Show eagerness to learn about the life in Australia including their culture, customs and have regard for the laws and traditions observed in Australia. 3. Always be polite, helpful and respectful to all especially the hosts and teachers. Remember the SAINTS Protocol! 4. Be self-disciplined and mindful of your volume when interacting with others in public. Always use positive language. 5. Refrain from making unfavourable comments about the services received or the merchandise bought by comparing the conditions in their own country. Instead, express the value of wonder and think about why such differences exists! 6. Always show empathy for others by being punctual 7. Dispose of all litter in the proper receptacles 8. Have special regard for social habits and observe personal cleanliness 9. Be familiar with all details of the programme 10. Be responsible for your personal belongings, particularly your money and other valuables. 11. ONLY THE FOLLOWING 2 USES OF HANDPHONES ARE APPROVED: a. To contact parents (only at night when you have returned to the apartment) b. and Photo-taking on tour days 12. Handphones to be kept locked in hotel rooms on school immersion days. Strictly no games to be played on handphones. 13. **The TV in the common rooms are not to be used / accessed without the presence of a teacher. 14. **Students are not allowed to use the hot water dispensers without the permission/supervision of teachers at all times. 15. **Students are not allowed to leave the rooms after lights-out each night. 16. Students must always be remain with the main group when on tour. Should the need to go to the washroom arise, students MUST get the permission of the teachers AND go in pairs / allocated groups. 9
