For the outbound UK airport, it is recommended that a small amount of sterling is taken should extra items wish to be bought. To cover food costs, it is recommended that students take approximately 20 in sterling and Dollars. This is only a guideline as students may wish to buy presents/souvenirs etc. CODE OF CONDUCT The ski visit should be a positive, enjoyable and rewarding experience. The following code of conduct is expected throughout the tour: Respectful behaviour throughout the visit. Students must remain in their seats during the flight with their seat belts on and not disturb other passengers. No noisy and disruptive behaviour in the accommodation. Rooms to be kept clean and tidy. Be punctual at all times. 4
5 Follow instructions at all times. No drinking alcohol, smoking, taking illegal substances etc. In circumstances when the code of conduct is broken, students may be withdrawn from some or all of the itinerary. In circumstances when a serious breach of the code of conduct has occurred and a student(s) cannot be trusted and puts the group in danger, parents will be informed. The American authorities take a strict view of certain behaviour and the situation may well be taken out of our hands. FOOD The accommodation is on a half-board basis. Students must purchase their own lunch on the mountain. Approx $15 will get students a sandwich/burger/pizza/chilli or something similar plus a drink and then maybe a chocolate bar or cookie for the afternoon. MEDICATION If you take any medication, this must be handed to Mr Sharatt in resort. Please label it clearly with the name, purpose and how often and when it is to be taken. If you suffer from travel sickness please take your medication in sufficient time for it to be effective during the journey. This also applies to the return journey. Some medication might need to be accompanied with a doctor s note (subject to airport security and Immigration). If you are unsure, please see Mr Punt this evening. During the visit, in exceptional circumstances, we will provide paracetamol to students for pain relief. Also, if required following a fall, students may be given Ibuprofen to help with both the swelling and the pain. If you do not wish your son/daughter to have paracetamol or Ibuprofen, please let Mr Solk know in writing before departure day. BANK All money must be handed in when we arrive at our hotel in resort. Staff will be in charge of the bank and will keep a record of your withdrawals. The bank will be open at certain times during the day and it is the responsibility of the students to ensure that they have enough money for that particular day. MOBILE PHONES & VALUABLES If you have to bring anything of value (e.g. mobile phone, ipods etc.) please take extreme care of it. Students should not use mobile phones during the coach 5
6 journeys. These are a distraction to the driver as well as other passengers. The cost of making and receiving calls in the USA is a lot more expensive than in the UK. ID CARDS Students will be provided with an identification card. This will provide details of the accommodation s address and telephone number as well as the emergency contact number for the visit. Students must carry this at all times in case of an emergency. PASSPORTS Students will require their own individual passport. This must be handed in to Mrs Collinson in the Bus Park at school before we set off for the airport. HEALTH & SAFETY It is essential that students listen carefully to instructions. Information and instructions are given for the safety of everyone and must be adhered to at all times. HEAD COUNTS Students will be allocated a head count group. This will be used frequently during the visit. INSURANCE The students are covered under a comprehensive insurance policy provided by NYCC. CONTACT WHILST IN USA I shall remind students to contact parents upon our arrival and they will get chances during the stay to contact home. Students will contact you ONLY if there is a delay on our return to Tadcaster on 5 April ADDITIONAL NOTES Please use this space to note any questions during the presentation or any other useful information given. 6
7 What to bring! You will find below a summary of items that we would strongly recommend you take with you on your visit. The weather in the USA can be very changeable and you must be prepared for both very cold and very warm weather. SKI JACKET - should be windproof, waterproof with elasticated cuffs and waist. A hood is useful. SKI PANTS/SALOPETTES - should be warm, water- resistant with inner cuffs on leg bottoms. Jeans are not suitable!! COTTON POLOS/FLEECES/T-SHIRTS/ JUMPERS - preferably cotton, warm and light. Several thin layers are best. HAT - large enough to cover your ears and not too tight. Wool/acrylic mix is suitable for being warm, lightweight and water-resistant. Should always be carried on the slopes. Please note that all students are required to wear a helmet (included in the package). SKI GLOVES - should be windproof and waterproof. MUST be worn at all times, even on warmer days. Mitts are preferable for beginners. Woollen gloves are NOT suitable. SKI SOCKS - at least two pairs of loop stitch tube socks. Woollen walking socks are not suitable. SKI GOGGLES AND/OR SUNGLASSES - Absolutely essential both on good and bad weather days. Should be worn at all times. Goggles are more suitable for children than glasses as they are less liable to breakage and loss and keep out the snow. WALKING BOOTS OR STRONG TRAINERS/SHOES - You may need to walk to ski hire through snow or wet conditions so you will need footwear that will keep your feet dry. SMALL RUCKSACK/BUM BAG - Useful for carrying your items around. HIGH PROTECTION UV SUNCREEN AND LIPSALVE - Should be worn every day and reapplied as necessary. You can burn on the mountain even on a cloudy day. APRES-SKI WEAR should be warm and casual. Footwear should be sensible and comfortable - rubber soles are preferable. High heels are not recommended! You might also like to take a swimming costume. Towels are provided in all hotels, but rarely tend to be the fluffy ones we're used to back home, so you may wish to take one bath towel with you. Don't forget reading material, ipods, water etc for the journey and a few fun-sized chocolate bars are great for taking onto the slopes to give yourself an energy boost! 7
