The Year 7 Lake District Visit has been happening for the last 30+ years. It is seen as an excellent way for the boys to finish the year, a time for meeting new people in the year group and experiencing things that are definitely outside the boys normal comfort zones. Purpose of Trip
Purpose of Trip The role that Outdoor Activities play in this is that it is an excellent way to challenge the boys, making them think about their role in a team and look at their own abilities and that of others.
Purpose of Trip Other traits like selfesteem and confidence are also pushed to new levels. When this is put into a residential experience as well it adds even further to the adventure that they feel.
Mountain Walking Activities Qualified Mountain Guides. Matt Warland ML Winter and Summer Rachel Gregory International Mountain Guide
Orienteering Run by Verulam staff with required experience or qualifications.
Kayaking Sailing Windsurfing At Nichol End Marine with qualified water sports instructors. Swimming is obviously an advantage but not a requirement. All boys who have been identified as weak or non swimmers will be required to do their best. Sailing and kayaking will be no problem as falling in is definitely not the challenge. Learning to windsurf is a different story so any very weak swimmers will be able to have a go and usually be able to swap onto a kayak or sailing activity.
Evening Activities Climbing Karting Games Swimming
Daily Routine 7.00am Rise - Wash - Pack for day s activities. 8.00am Breakfast - Briefing - Final packing. 9.30am - Leave for activities. 5.00pm - Return from activities. Wash 6.00pm - Evening Meal. 7.00pm - Leave for Evening Activities. Bed Time Varies - Depending on activity and of course behaviour!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Medical and Dietary Information All medication that the boys have must be given to Mr Davidson(BCH) or Mr Bullock(JPY) when you meet in the car park of Morrison s. They are acting as the trip doctors!! It must be clearly labelled and in a bag clear food bag a good idea. Boys must carry their own inhalers/epipens and give spare to person designated in case they lose them. Boys should not be in possession of any pills. If there are any changes to the medical form you have filled in please let me know immediately. All requests for special diets will be sorted out so don t worry.
Insurance The school journey insurance is a comprehensive policy which covers all travel, injuries and accidents for all activities. All personal property is insured but there is an excess on claims for personal belongings. All risk assessments have been made and approved. A Copy of the insurance policy can be requested from me.
Code Of Conduct Enjoy yourself, but don t spoil the enjoyment of others All pupils are expected to behave in a responsible manner at all times to ensure the good name of the school is maintained. Pupils may not leave the YHA site without the permission of a member of staff. Smoking is not allowed under any circumstances. Pupils may not consume alcohol or any illegal substances. Show consideration for other schools if present, the Activity instructors, and your drivers.
Respect the coach, minibus, the YHA and equipment issued to you. The cost of repairing any wilful damage will be passed on to you. After lights out keep noise to a minimum and get your head down. Both you and the staff have long and physically active days ahead. Refrain from anti social behaviour: littering, offensive or insulting language and actions. Follow the basic rules of the countryside code. Boys must never run on the mountains, leave the group for any reason, or walk ahead of the leader of the party. On the mountain boys must always carry spare clothing, waterproof clothing, food, Basic First aid kit, a safety bag, a small torch and a whistle.
When on water sports activities, boys must wear a Buoyancy Aid at all times, including the lunch hour. They will also be required to take a change of clothing and a towel. On no account may boys lean out of the upstairs windows of the hostel. Boys must not climb to the top of the waterfall which is within the grounds of the hostel or go behind the Youth Hostel. We would reserve the right to send any party member home for consistent or gross misconduct. The cost of this will be borne entirely by you or your parents. Electrical equipment is forbidden at the YHA. Common room facilities are available so therefore pupils are forbidden to be in each others rooms. BOYS MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THEY HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY AND FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS.
STUDENTS PERSONAL KIT LIST We all know how unreliable summer is in Britain. Often the weather is no problem at all but you must be prepared for cold or wet conditions, and sometimes it is even too hot! Please do not bring aerosols of any kind - also no plug in electrical equipment is allowed. General Washing kit with roll on anti-perspirant Large towel Notebook and pen/pencil Indoor footwear - slippers preferred Nightwear Underwear
OPTIONAL Small/medium lunch box Camera Balaclava Spare Gloves Watch Compass 1:25000 OS Map of Derwentwater area Gaitors Emergency Food
VITAL STUDENTS PERSONAL KIT LIST Pair Mountain boots Medium-sized (20 or 30 litres) day/ruck sack Thick thermal(fleece) or woollen sweaters Windproof/waterproof jacket Body warmer/fleece as midlayer to go under waterproof jacket Waterproof Trousers Pairs thick woollen or loop stitch socks Pairs loose trousers or track suit trousers Pair of old trainers/sandals (an old pair you don't mind getting wet or dirty!) Pair good trainers Pair gloves Woollen/fleece hat
2 Large polythene bags (rubble sacs)/dry bag 3 Long sleeved/tee-shirts/thermal base layers 2 Pairs shorts 1 Swimming costume 1 Wide Brim Sun hat/baseball cap and sunglasses if we are lucky with the weather! 2 Sets of smart/clean clothes for evening activities 1 Small hand torch 1 Plastic drinks bottle at least 1 litre 1 Large bottle of Sun block of at least factor 30 1 Bottle of insect repellent (Natural) 1 Whistle 1 Small First Aid Kit - basics only
Loose Ends Pocket Money Already paid for as part of the cost! Will be distributed for boys to buy snacks or souvenirs as they want. 5 will be kept back for the journey home. Luggage We will be travelling in 6 minibuses and 2 large transits, It is therefore vital that all baggage will fit in these vehicles. You are requested to send your son with a medium suitcase and his day sac (20-30 litre small rucksack) with packed lunch and items for the journey. This will make the drivers and therefore the staff happy. It will also make the organisation of the Dorms better, as we can avoid the boys rummaging through their kit trying to find things.
Questions Please ask if I have missed something or you are not sure of something. Thank you for coming!!
