7 2012 Issue 1 Hunterdon County Department of Parks and Recreation Harbinger 7 HISTORY, GARDENING, THEATRE, & SQUARE DANCING HISTORY THROUGH AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY HUNTERDON FROM ABOVE Fri., Feb. 10, 7:00 PM 9:00 PM, Echo Hill, Teens/Adults, $3 This presentation highlights the changing landscape of Hunterdon County from 1930 to the present using comparative interpretation of images from the aerial photograph library of New Jersey s Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Recently retired from the NJDEP S Green Acres Program, presenter Mike McCann s job was researching the history of land being considered for purchase by the state. He spent numerous hours examining aerial photography under a microscope, researching records and maps, and interviewing long-time residents. Mike is eager to share his extensive knowledge. The striking visuals and intriguing narration of the slideshow highlight the transition from the farm fields, orchards, forest, railroads, and small towns of rural Hunterdon to the present-day environment of houses, malls, and roadways. *NEW* THERE USED TO BE A RAILROAD Fri., March 30, 7:00 PM 9:00 PM, Echo Hill, Teens/Adults, $3 New Jersey and railroads go way back, all the way to 1815 when the state granted John Stevens of Hoboken the first railroad charter in the U.S. Although Stevens New Jersey Railroad was never constructed, the Camden & Amboy Railroad, under the direction of Stevens sons, began service between South Amboy and Bordentown in 1833, the first of many railroads to lay track across the Garden State. In There Used to be a Railroad, Mike McCann reaches into his twenty years experience researching the Department of Environmental Protection s aerial photo library to provide a glimpse of a New Jersey long gone one in which you could get practically anywhere by rail. NJ HISTORY THROUGH AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY Fri., April 27, 7:00 PM 9:00 PM, Echo Hill, Teens/Adults, $3 In 1930 New Jersey was a garden state. Aerial photography from that time depicts a grayscale checkerboard of farm fields, orchards, forests, and small towns. How it has changed! The State s once expansive network of railroads disappeared and has been replaced with county routes, state highways, and interstates. Farms, old well houses, limestone kilns, and forests are now houses, malls, and asphalt. Explore the history of not-that-long-ago with Mike McCann, whose twenty years experience bring to life lost industries, amusement parks, canals, and bridges, with a liberal dose of Jerseyana. PARK NEWS INVASIVE SPECIES: This summer, state officials searched for the invasive species, Water Chestnut, in the 33 ponds at Hoffman Park. They found that four of the ponds had the species growing in them. The Parks and Recreation Department organized a volunteer team for Public Lands Day who planned to remove the Water Chestnut from the ponds. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to inclement weather, but the next week our Visitor Service staff finished the task. Watch for another chance to eradicate invasive species during Public Lands Day this September. NEW PROPERTY: On November 16, 2011, Hunterdon County closed on a new piece of property along Point Mountain Road in Lebanon Township.
