1 HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY The Happy Hoofers Chapter encompasses Broward County Happy Hoofers Hoopla Florida Trail Association HIKE-FLA Volume 22, Issue 2 July-August-September 2012 Monthly Meetings Second Thursday of Every Month 7:30 P.M. Except June/July/August 201 Lyons Road South Coconut Creek, FL Inside this issue: S. Regional Conference 2 Peanut Island by Lynn Thompson If you are looking for a way to cool off, try checking out Peanut Island in West Palm Beach. My husband, Mike and I went up there this summer. We parked at Phil Foster Park on Blue Heron Blvd., put our kayaks in and paddled the short paddle over to Peanut Island. If you don t have a kayak or canoe, you can rent one from Adventure times kayaks (561) or you can take the Peanut Island Ferry (561) with Capt Joe. They charge $10 for an adult round trip. Once you get to the island, there are picnic tables, bathrooms, and a paved sidewalk that you can walk all the way around the island. There is also a campground where you can camp for $20/night. On weekends a volunteer group (for a small fee) will take you on a tour of Kennedy s bunker, leftover from the Cuban Missile Days. Our mission this trip was to go snorkeling. On the Southeast corner of the island they have built an artificial reef which is now teeming with lots of colorful reef fish. During the tide change there is a swift current coming and going from the inlet opening to the ocean. Weekends in the summer do tend to get crowded, but it is worth the trip. Photo by Lynn Thompson The next newsletter will be the October-November-December issue. Please send articles and pictures to me at:. Officers & committees 2 Chair s Corner 2 National Trails Day June 2, Membership 3 Fall Activities 4-5 Membership Application 6 Meetings resuming on September 13, 2012 I hope everyone enjoyed their summer off from meetings. Hopefully you were able to travel to cooler areas of the country and check out some varied terrain for a change. Now it is time to come home and walk on and work on our local trails. Our business meetings will be resuming on September 13. The program will be a Welcome Back and a Business Meeting. The lineup of meetings for the remainder of 2012 is: October 11: Camping Equipment 101 November 8: Meet your Native Wildlife Friends December 13: Holiday Party Mark your calendars, hope to see you there!
2 Page 2 Happy Hoofers Hoopla South Regional Conference November 2-4, 2012 SAVE THE DATE for the Florida Trail South Regional Conference scheduled for November 2-4, 2012 at the Tanah Keeta Boys Scout Camp in Tequesta. The Happy Hoofers is the host chapter this year and members of the chapter have been busy planning the conference. The theme is "Go Native" which will be presented in the programs from edible bugs to edible native plants. In addition, there will be a hike and a canoe/kayak trip. Activities include carving hiking sticks and star gazing - more activities to come. Look for more details and registration information on the chapter's website around September 1st. We are soliciting donations from companies/ corporations for items for the conference. This can be in the form of material items or cash. If you have a contact name & contact information at a company that we can reach out to, please send me the information. Please do not send a list of companies to contact. If you have any ideas and contact information for a possible program/activity at the conference, please send me the information. The Activity Leaders have put together a great list of activities for the coming season. Now it is up to you to show your support - and participate in the activities. You can participate in some old favorites - day hike to Carpenter Camp, backpacking in Hickory Hammock, 4 days A c r o s s t h e P r e s e r v e backpacking and Easter at Myakka. The team has come up with some great new activities - kayaking on Sebastian River, day hike in Section I of the Florida Trail, day hike in Grassy Waters Preserve, backpacking to Collier Camp in Big Cypress, and bike ride and crab fest at Bear Island. Our goals for the coming season are to increase membership, recruit more Activity Leaders and explore new activities. Our chapter's membership numbers have fallen and we need everyone's help in recruiting new members. Talk to your co-workers, neighbors and friends about the Florida Trail and bring them to a meeting. And if you are interested in being an Activity Leader, please let me know. We continue to work on the re-routing of the trail in Section II of the Addition Lands in Big Cypress National Preserve. We have presented the chapter's proposal for the rerouting to the U.S. Forest Service and Big Cypress National Preserve Management who has given their initial approval, and many thanks to David Denham for leading the effort in exploration of a new trail. We expect this process to take several years before there is officially a new Florida National Scenic Trail in Section II. See you on the trail. Kay Ferrara Chapter Chair
3 Volume 22, Issue 2 Page 3 Great turnout of volunteers for National Trails Day by Lynn Thompson June 2, 2012 was National Trails Day. We held our event this year at Fern Forest Nature Center and had a great turnout of volunteers to lead hikes, provide refreshments, and keep the wildlife at bay. (Rocky Raccoon had his eye on our refreshments.) We had media coverage from Nick Sortal in the Sun Sentinel and from Sue Cocking from the Miami Herald. Some of our would be participants stayed away due to threatening thunder storms, but we were fortunate, the rain stopped just as we were setting up and stayed away until we finished. Our leaders took groups on guided walks through the park, onto the boardwalk, and back to our refreshment table. We hope we have gained some permanent friends from our endeavor. More pictures of the day can be found on our Facebook page at: media/set/? set=oa &t ype=1#!/groups/ / photos/ Thank you to our volunteers: Lori & Jim Dillon, Nancy Reuwer, Allan Young, Bill Allison, Dick Ward, Patrick Kerr, Roland Burrows, Mike Thompson, David Denham, Kay Ferrara, Larry Alesi, Susan Seale, and Patrick Mazzio. I hope I have not left anyone out, if I did, I apologize. I know more of our members were there for moral support and we all enjoyed the camaraderie while waiting for the next group of hikers.
