4 2 By the Tomahawk Leader Little did they know nearly four decades ago that what started out as a small group of friends heading out to view fall colors would ultimately grow into something long-lasting that draws motorcycle enthusiasts from around the state, country and world to Tomahawk each fall. Yes, a few more friends have joined the ride since then and now tens of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts converge on Tomahawk each September for the Fall Ride, one of the biggest and most anticipated motorcycle rallies in northern Wisconsin and beyond. This year the open road leads to town Sept , with some activities even earlier. The Tomahawk Leader newspaper is proud to provide you with this Official Guide of Fall Ride events and well-wishes from advertisers who will eagerly welcome and serve you. The Tomahawk Fall Ride is one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the state and the biggest fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in northern Wisconsin. The venue has raised millions of dollars for families living with neuromuscular diseases since 1983, when organizers began donating to MDA. Monies raised during the Tomahawk Ride provide care for clients and expanded research. MDA raffles a brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycle as a fundraiser. Tickets are sold throughout the Northwoods by MDA and all proceeds benefit them. Keep in mind that Tomahawk s SARA Park on West Somo Avenue is the only location where 100% of the proceeds benefit MDA. Once again, Tomahawk s Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 will handle guardianship of the downtown Tomahawk festivities. That focus will be on veterans, with a MASH theme from the hit TV series adding to the fun. Returning this year are a Breakfast with a Vet Thursday through Saturday, Sept and a MASH Blood Drive on Friday. Everyone is encouraged to join the Friday night Thunder Parade, with hundreds of motorcycles taking an 18-mile journey through the back roads, ending up in downtown Tomahawk in time for a Friday night Street Dance with bands playing at both ends of West Wisconsin Avenue. There s also a Street Dance Saturday night. Bubba s Tribute Party in Nokomis (remembering Continued on Page 4

Harley-Davidson Motor Company has partnered with the MDA to fight neuromuscular diseases since 1980, notes Abby Forcey of the MDA Green Bay office. Among those expected to be on hand will be 8-yearold Evan Petersen, Oconto Falls, the 2018 State MDA Ambassador. He has been diagnosed with Centronuclear Myopathy, a rare muscular disease that causes muscle weakness and wasting in skeletal muscles, which are used for movement. Petersen s mom says, MDA has brought so much joy to Evan s life through MDA Summer Camp, new friendships and fun activities throughout the year. MDA is a leader in funding research and the development of new promising drugs and treatments for muscle diseases. MDA STATE AMBASSADOR: MEET EVAN Evan is 8 years old and lives in Oconto Falls, Wis. 11 9 HARLEY LOVER WITH AMPUTATION RECONFIGURES BIKES AND CONTINUES TO RIDE By Jennifer Ruid Tomahawk Leader Reporter I don t let things stop me or slow me down. That is Will Garske s inspirational approach to life, and he is true to every word. Immediately after graduating from a Wausau high school in 1987, Garske chose to enlist in the United States Air Force where he spent 10 years serving his country stationed throughout Korea and the United States. After being honorably discharged in 1997, Garske returned to Wisconsin and happily chose to live in the city that annually hosts the well known Fall Ride festivities: Tomahawk! Garske s passion for Harley-Davidson doesn t stop at their motorcycles. He also works for the company at one of its Tomahawk plant locations. Unfortunately, Garske s life significantly changed when he came home from work one evening in July of 2014 and developed a blood clot in his left leg. He spent three days in a Rhinelander hospital, where his treatment team attempted to break up the clot. Then, Garske was transported to Marshfield. When he reached the hospital, a serious medical condition Walkabout Orthotics and Prothestics was happy to create Garske s Harley-inspired prothestic design. WILL GARSKE CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

12 10 WILL GARSKE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 known as compartment syndrome had set in. Ultimately, the conditions and complications resulted in amputation of his leg below the left knee in December of I spent a year and a half trying to save the leg with many different treatments and surgeries. I spent months in the hospital dealing with complications and infections. It came to a point in life when you can t keep running around in circles. It was time to take the leg. I was ready to get it done so I could focus on rehabilitation and getting back to my life, shared Garske. Armed with a strong support system of family and close friends, a passion for riding, a colorful sense of humor and a motivating inner desire for living life to the fullest, Garske focused on finding a way to get back on a Harley. Two years ago, I wanted to keep riding. When you have a lot of time on your hands, it is amazing what you can research and find while searching on the Internet! I found myself a side car, just a frame for sale, so I just jumped in the truck and drove down and bought it and picked it up in southern Illinois, he recalled. When I got back, my close buddy, who is a great welder and fabricator, listened to my vision and we worked together in the shop welding and configuring. I just wanted to ride. It felt like it took forever, but it only took us a few months. We came up with a side car for the side of my 2012 Harley Ultra Classic, and we put one of those racks that you would have on the back of your car to load up a power chair, and so I would drive the scooter up on there, and I would close the gate and slide over onto the seat. We put a suicide shift which allows me to shift with my left hand, and away I would go without worrying about balance when I stopped because I had a side car, explained Garske. Garske has since made adaptations to a second motorcycle, a 2004 Harley-Davidson Dyna Glide. He relocated the clutch lever to a suicide shift bar. He attributes his inspiration to utilize the suicide shift method adaptations to his 1942 WLA model Harley-Davidson that is also proudly parked in his shop. When asked if he rides the bikes frequently, Garske chuckled and said, I just rode 200 miles to go and get some pie yesterday. It was really good pie. Then, Garske s proud daughter stopped by with his precious new granddaughter in tow. I can t tell you what an inspiration this man is. He is so humble and doesn t realize how many people s lives he touches. There is a saying in our family: Where there is a will, there is a way. And, in my Dad s case, it is literal. I m so proud of him. My daughter is so lucky because she gets to call him her Grandpa, she shared. Garske s appreciation and respect for the residents of the local community led him to a successfully elected position as an acting council member for the City of Tomahawk. I can t say enough about the Tomahawk community. I just love this city, Garske offered. Tomahawk welcomed me with open arms and people are always willing to help. Garske s positive attitude and motivating disposition are contagious. He frequently shares his supportive words of wisdom and personal time with others who are facing disabilities and similar surgical procedures. It is not easy, but if there is something that you want to do, whether it is riding a Harley or knitting, don t ever give up, he stated. You must find a reason to get up and still enjoy life. There is always light at the end of the tunnel.

This year it s no different, with ongoing activities Wednesday, Sept. 12 through Sunday, Sept. 16. Among the bands featured will be Little Texas, Jerry Schmitt Band, Branded, Almost Famous, Tallan Noble Latz, Black Knight, Dawn Marie and Mark Wayne. Other highlights include a swap meet with live music, classic car and hot rod show, ethnic food court, lawn mower races, helicopter tours and pancakes for breakfast. The park is located on County Road L, by the Nokomis Fire Department, in Oneida County. Bubba passed away on April 19, 2017, at age 63. His son, Keith Troutman, is making sure the party many came to know continues. He says: My dad started Bubba s Big Party from nothing and devoted his life to growing it. He taught me the ropes and prepared me to follow in his footsteps. Bubba s Tribute Party 2017 was an incredible success thanks to the continued support and loyalty of our Tomahawk Fall Ride goers. They made my first year one for the memory books. The weekend was full of great stories and lots of laughs. It was exactly what my dad would have wanted his Tribute Party to be. We couldn t have asked for better weather. It was straight out of heaven. I have an incredibly supportive family and dedicated employees. They wanted to make this party a success as much as I did. They helped make it all happen. I also can t thank the Oneida County Sheriff s Department, Town of Nokomis and Nokomis Fire Department enough for all of their planning and assistance. We all worked together to keep everyone safe. We are excited for 2018 and are continuing to add new attractions to bring more people into the Tomahawk area and help support MDA. I ll still be looking for my dad at the party, but the party must live on Wildthings Fur Co. As motorcyclists themselves, they plan outings they are certain participants will enjoy. Roxanne says there s time to take in all three runs, with plenty of opportunity to still visit SARA Park, downtown Tomahawk and activities out at Nokomis Park, as desired. 30 29 Blood Drive, Breakfast with a Vet VFW MASH theme honoring veterans Info tent, Swamp, Rosie s downtown By Kathy Tobin Tomahawk Leader Editor kathy@tomahawkleader.com Tomahawk s Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 is presenting a MASH theme again this year as it takes to the streets as the overall planner for downtown events during the Tomahawk Fall Ride. The theme is particularly appropriate since the focus of the VFW s endeavors is veteran-based. MASH Blood Drive Back again is a MASH Blood Drive planned Friday, Sept. 14, between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., in the upper hall at the VFW hall, 203 S. 4 th St. VFW Auxiliary member Pat Haskin got the idea from a MASH blood drive that s been held in Merrill for years. It, too, is through The Community Blood Center out of Appleton and relies on the assistance of VFW and Auxiliary members. Pancake Breakfast with a Vet The Tomahawk VFW invites everyone to a Pancake Breakfast with a Vet Thursday, Friday and Saturday of Fall Ride. Dine with veterans between 8 and 11 a.m. at the VFW hall. Included are pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausages, biscuits and gravy and beverage for $8. The event is a great way to share in commaraderie, and honor and recognize veterans, Haskin says. Anyone who donates blood at the MASH blood drive early enough in the day will receive a free breakfast. Downtown Events A VFW MASH command tent will be at the corner of West Wisconsin Avenue and South Second Street featuring veteran displays and information. One of the presentations will be about the Highground. There also will be information VFW Continued on Page 31 Welcome Fall Riders! ATM 24 Hr. 32 31 VFW continued from Page 29 about Camp American Legion, the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, Wounded Warrior in Action Foundation, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the VFW. Friday night s Thunder Parade of bikers will wind its way through the backroads and end up downtown for the first of two nights of Street Dances. Cherry Pie will perform at the west end of Wisconsin Avenue from 7 to 11:30 p.m. and Vada s Rockhouse will be at the east end Friday from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday night it s HYDE to the west from 7 to 11 p.m. and Rising Phoenix on the east end, from 6 to 10 p.m. Beer and soda will be served at the VFW s canteens The Swamp and Rosie s. Haskins notes the VFW invited non-profits to raise funds for their programs, with food courts on North Second and Third Streets. Bars and food stands will be open from noon to close. The VFW also urges visitors to ask about their 2016, 2017 and 2018 Veterans Fall Ride pin. (See this year s collectible.) This year s pin, shaped like a hatchet, honoring POWs and MIAs, was designed by Troy Franson. It sells for $5. Why Honor Veterans? A large percentage of motorcycle riders are veterans. It s the freedom of the open road that draws them, Haskin feels. So, the Fall Ride-veterans connection seems logical, she says. This is our community service, Haskin said of the VFW s involvement. She notes the event is not a fundraiser for the organization. It s actually a very costly event, she says. But as funds are raised to help ensure the event continues and becomes sustainable, some money also goes toward helping veterans. The need might be transportation or new teeth or food and shelter, Haskin indicates. It also offers a great educational opportunity for and about veterans, she says. What s nice, she adds, is that the Lincoln County Veterans Service Office helps get word of Tomahawk s big rally out nationally. Pat and her husband, Bill, a Vietnam veteran, have been riding motorcycles together for about 10 years. They converted a 1998 Harley-Davidson motorcycle to a threewheeler, when they became too old to throw their legs over a bike. She enjoys the unrestrained feeling of riding and being AARP members of a Wednesday night group that dines out and then rides about 75 miles. The fresh air puts you in touch with that free feeling, she offers. For information on the VFW and its Fall Ride activities, call and leave a message.

38 Somo Plant 37 Continued from Page 35 of two facilities, one on Kaphaem Road and one on Somo Avenue, which include 192,000 square feet on 96 acres. Employees at Tomahawk Operations produce components using an injection molding process and then the parts are painted by state-of-the-art robotics. Employees also produce windshields for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The finished components are shipped to Harley-Davidson facilities in York, Penn., and Kansas City, Mo., and then assembled on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Tomahawk Operations History The original plant in Tomahawk was purchased from Tomahawk Boat Manufacturing Co. in 1961, and Harley-Davidson began producing parts in In 1965, Tomahawk Operations became the sole supplier of the fiberglass parts including sidecar bodies, saddlebags and windshields. In 1995, the North Plant was added to accommodate increased production of sidecars, windshields and the painting of starter motors. Plant on Kaphaem Road In 2002, Harley-Davidson added a 60,000-squarefoot facility on Kaphaem Road. A few years later, a 35,000-square-foot addition was built to house injection-molding operations. Shortly after that, windshield operations also moved to the Kaphaem Road plant. In 2014, Tomahawk Operations started painting Hard Candy Custom parts. This complex painting process required a new, innovative sanding cell and work process. The following year also saw several new process developments, including a new silk screen machine, and a new router and state-of-the-art oven in the Windshield department. 39 38 By Kathy Tobin Tomahawk Leader Editor It takes a combined effort to the tune of up to $19,000 each year for contracted services and another $4,500 for local police to provide security just within the city limits during the Tomahawk Fall Ride, according to Tomahawk Police Chief Al Elvins. Tomahawk hires additional officers to assist as tens of thousands of motorcyclists converge on a city of some 3,300 for the multi-day event, typically Wednesday through Sunday. Mutual aid requests go out to the Lincoln County Sheriff s Office, and police with Merrill, Everest Metro, Rothschild, Marathon and possibly Antigo. All but the sheriff s crew must be paid for, Elvins noted. Visiting law enforcement work in two-person teams, with floaters. Food is provided at City Hall during breaks, Elvins noted. The Tomahawk VFW, which is overseeing downtown events, has donated $1,500 toward meals and wages, it was indicated. The VFW also will bring in members of a criminal justice club from Nicolet College to work around barricade areas, reminding those enjoying activities including the evening street dances that open intoxicants are not allowed out of the designated areas. All are in recruit school, Elvins said. They don t do any actual policing or arrests, he noted. West Wisconsin Avenue will be closed down between 11 a.m. and midnight Friday and Saturday, with cars directed to park elsewhere so there s no co-mingling with bikes, Elvins indicated. Open intoxicants will be allowed in designated areas between 5 p.m. and midnight Friday and noon to midnight Saturday. With the added manpower, in theory one shouldn t have to go a block or block and a half (downtown) without seeing an officer, Elvins has said. The chief encourages caution by the motorcyclists and residents. Do errands early if you want to avoid the crowds, and just be patient, he advised. Know the cyclists tend to go through stop signs in packs, he added. Remember, he said, Fall Ride only happens once a year. A bike owner himself, Elvins used to be a police motorcycle officer. These days he rides for pleasure, not for purpose. It s fun. It s enjoyable the two-wheel therapy, he noted. 41 40 Fall Ride dates back to 1982 From Tomahawk Leader Files A group of 21 North Country Riders Motorcycle Club members getting together in October 1982 is the official inauguration of the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Money raised went to a charity, although not to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Harley-Davidson, Inc. and the Harley Owners Group came onboard in 1983 when about 300 riders on 160 motorcycles took part in an Oct mile ride along Lincoln County backroads. Afterwards, they were treated to free beer, brats and door prizes at the Tomahawk Harley- Davidson plant. Some $350 was raised for MDA Harley- Davidson s charity of choice through a $2 registration fee. In hope of more favorable motorcycling weather, the event was moved to early September in About 1,200 people on 676 cycles enjoyed the day, raising $3,200 for MDA. The Fall Ride moved permanently to SARA Park in Attendance estimates soared to 5,000 people that year and donations to MDA neared $10,000. The popular bike raffle was added a year later. A 1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster was the first cycle given away and was won by a Merrill man. In its 10 th year in 1991, the Thunder Parade rumbled for the first time through the streets of Tomahawk. An estimated 4,000 riders attended, even in pouring rain. Organizers upped the ante on the raffle bike, offering a new Big Twin FLHS Electra Glide Sport. More than $20,000 was raised for MDA. The brand new Tomahawk Harley-Davidson North Plant opened for tours during the 1995 Fall Ride. The crowd was estimated to be about 13,000 strong at its Saturday peak. All 30,000 raffle tickets were sold and the total donation to

42 37 TH YEAR Continued on Page MDA topped $80,000. A green and gold raffle bike personally autographed by Green Bay Packers Coach and Harley-Davidson enthusiast Mike Holmgren commemorated the Packers Super Bowl championship in The donation to MDA topped $100,000, with more than $67,000 raised from the bike raffle alone. Attendance estimates hovered around 30,000 people and 15,000 motorcycles. About 1,600 riders participated in the Fun Runs and 1,000 rode in the Thunder Parade. A downtown street dance following the parade Friday night was added to the list of weekend activities. The Fall Ride s 20 th anniversary was observed in The event helped observe the opening of the State Hwy. 51 four-lane bypass. For the first time, two raffle bikes were featured with a grand prize Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic and a second place Sportster. An estimated 4,000 bikes rode in the Thunder Parade which followed the northbound lanes of Hwy. 51, the highway s first traffic. A candlelight vigil was held as many bikers paused to honor those who died just a few days earlier in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. Harley-Davidson, the parent firm, marked its 100 th anniversary in big fashion in Milwaukee in The celebration also was noted at Tomahawk s 2003 Fall Ride as Harley-Davidson s Tomahawk Operations marked its own important milestone 40 years of being an integral part of FR-18 REM300

44 43 37 TH YEAR Continued from Page 41 the company and the Tomahawk community. A Blind Ride was offered for the first time during which the Tomahawk Lions Club and Northern Lights Harley Owners Group (HOG) took 14 visually-impaired people on the 18-mile Thunder Parade. Local MDA donations totaled $112,000. Perfect motorcycling weather Sept , 2004, pulled in an estimated 40,000 people and 20,000 motorcycles. Some $160,000 was raised for MDA, including $75,000 from raffle bike sales. Celebrating its 25 th milestone in 2006, the Tomahawk Fall Ride saw a record 45,000 visitors to the city with about $141,000 raised for MDA. A ceremony commemorated the quarter century milestone of the Ride at the Tomahawk Post Office with the unveiling of the first day cancellation of the 25-year anniversary Tomahawk Fall Ride cancel. The Tomahawk Downtown Business Council, Tomahawk Post Office and Tomahawk Leader teamed up to present one-of-a-kind 2007 Tomahawk Fall Ride collector items: two postcards, a limited-edition Fall Ride stamp and a special one-day motorcycle pictorial cancellation dated Sept. 14, The hosting community was in a bit of a funk in 2010 despite the excitement over welcoming our motorcycle friends. Our local Harley-Davidson plant had just finished a union vote that would help keep the company in Tomahawk and Wisconsin, and we were only weeks away from the closure of Veterans Memorial Bridge for removal and total reconstruction. The latter proved to be a financial burden on the community as well as an inconvenience for the next nine months. The bridge reopened and additional roadwork on North Fourth Street was timed for completion just before the 2011 Fall Ride. The rumble was back in the air and spirits were high as Tomahawk s Fall Ride s 30 th anniversary was celebrated. Dairyland Cycle Insurance became the official event sponsor in 2014, committing a $12,000 donation each of three years, plus promoting the Tomahawk event through billboards in large market areas around the state and mailings to Dairyland policy-holders as well as additional support and subsequent large donations to MDA. Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 declared 2016 the Year of the Veteran, taking over the downtown Tomahawk portion of event planning during the 35 th anniversary observance. A MASH theme from the TV series was the focus of added enthusiasm, with a Command Center tent, and MASH look-alike, trivia and business window decorating contests, along with an emphasis on involving veterans in an even bigger Thunder Parade. Those proceeds supported veterans causes including the Never Forgotten Honor Flight and Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation, with MDA the continued focus at SARA Park, through the bike raffle and by other supporters. A VFW MASH blood drive was added in And, the Big Party lived on at Nokomis Community Park in memory of founder Bubba Troutman, who died in April of that year at age 63.

45 44 Thanks to some donations, the Fall Ride will be keeping little butts on bikes, too. Each year since at least 2002, miniature motorcycles have been made available for youngsters to ride. But several of the bikes needed new batteries for Tomahawk Battery and Rebuilding came to the rescue with one donated replacement and USW Local 460 donated three more. The engines will rev up in a corral at SARA Park with the Christian Motorcyclists Association again volunteering members time to run the booth. Look for the fun during the day Friday and Saturday at SARA Park. Goodies are offered for kids and adults. Everything is free. Some of these kids look forward to this year after year, notes organizer Roxanne Consolver of Tomahawk. 48 47 We who live in Tomahawk year-round feel truly blessed by our surroundings and we re excited to share them with visitors whenever possible. So, we re glad you ve come and have a chance to look around. We are known for our scenic lakes and vast woods. We also are recognized for our strong work ethic, excellent medical and educational facilities, and those endless recreational opportunities. We re also known for our can-do attitude and our acts of compassion for those in need. Tomahawk really is a great place to live, work, visit and ultimately retire. So, enjoy your time at this year s Tomahawk Fall Ride and please keep us in mind when planning your next vacation or brief getaway. Consider us, too, for your business venture (Tomahawk Main Street in downtown, and the Tomahawk Chamber would gladly put you in touch with the right people to make it happen). Here are some tidbits you might not know: Tomahawk was founded by William H. Bradley in The city was incorporated in The Kwahamot Water Ski Club entertaining since 1961 provides free summer ski shows three times a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day. By the way, Kwahamot is Tomahawk spelled backwards. Our free Venison Feed the Friday in November just before the opening of the gun deer season is the only one of its kind in the country. We close down a portion of downtown, pull out the grills and serve free venison burgers to all who attend. You ll note that Tomahawk also closes down West Wisconsin Avenue in downtown for the Fall Ride Thunder Parade and Friday and Saturday night Street Dances. We like holding events right on our Main Street. Our July 4 th Pow Wow Days celebration includes a parade and water fights downtown and is a huge can t-be-missed reunion-like celebration. And, a few weeks ago we held our 11 th annual Thrilla On The Grilla barbecued ribs festival, once again pulling grills out on the main thoroughfare in town. Timm s Hill, a short distance from here off Hwy. 86, is the highest geographic point in Wisconsin. It s a scenic ride you would enjoy. To find out more about Tomahawk and to keep in touch the rest of the year, consider subscribing to the Tomahawk Leader newspaper. An Online Edition link is available at or call We will be posting Fall Ride pictures in the online Photo Album and run them in the newspaper. And, we d love to hear about you where you re from and how long you ve been coming to Tomahawk s big event. Please send your comments to news@tomahawkleader.com.
