4 2 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride 2017 Thunder rolls in the Northwoods: Enjoy Tomahawk s 36 th Fall Ride for MDA By the Tomahawk Leader When a small group of friends set out to view the spectacular fall colors that abound in the greater Tomahawk area this time of year 36 years ago little did they realize what their get-together would grow into decades later. A few more friends have joined the ride since then and now tens of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts converge in Tomahawk each September for the Fall Ride, one of the biggest and most anticipated motorcycle rallies in northern Wisconsin and beyond. This year the open road leads to town Sept , with some activities even earlier. The Tomahawk Leader newspaper is proud to provide you with this Official Guide of Fall Ride events and well-wishes from advertisers who will eagerly welcome and serve you. The Tomahawk Fall Ride is one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the state and the biggest fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) in northern Wisconsin. The venue has raised millions of dollars for families living with neuromuscular diseases since 1983, when organizers began donating to MDA. Monies raised during the Tomahawk Ride provide care for clients and expanded research. MDA raffles a brand new Harley-Davidson motorcycle as a fundraiser. Tickets are sold throughout the Northwoods by MDA and all proceeds benefit them. Keep in mind that Tomahawk s SARA Park on West Somo Avenue is the only location where 100% of the proceeds benefit MDA. Once again, Tomahawk s Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 will handle guardianship of the downtown Tomahawk festivities. That focus will be on veterans, with a M*A*S*H theme from the hit TV series adding to the fun. New this year is a M*A*S*H Blood Drive on Thursday. There s also a M*A*S*H Trivia Contest with prizes (see the questions elsewhere in this book). Bubba s Tribute Party in Nokomis (remembering the late Bubba Troutman who died earlier this year) offers a full slate of big-name musical entertainment and vendors along with variety, like Human Zorb Bowling, Classic Car and Hot Rod Show and Biker Butt Contest. There s also a daily Pancake Breakfast served by the Nokomis Fire Department and church services through the Christian Motorcycle Association. Many other establishments throughout Tomahawk and the surrounding Northwoods have additional live music during the long weekend. Look for live music listings inside this Guide. 8 6 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride 2017 Fall Ride proceeds making big difference for MDA By Jennifer Ruid Tomahawk Leader Reporter The Fall Ride in Tomahawk brings thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to the area. It is a gathering filled with parties, entertainment, vendors and activities! However, at the center of the big event is the primary goal, which is raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The MDA is an American organization that combats muscular dystrophy and diseases of the nervous system and muscular system by funding research, providing medical and community services, and educating health professionals and the general public. The mission of the MDA is to find treatments and cures for patients and families. The Muscular Dystrophy Association wants to improve the quality of life for our families, said Lauren Nelsen, MDA fundraising coordinator, Green Bay. We are so grateful for the donations we receive from the Fall Ride. Those monies have made an amazing MDA Continued on Page 7 Tomahawk s Com plete Supermarket Liquor Cigarettes Full-Service Deli Fresh Bakery Floral ATM Park City Credit Union We Accept MasterCard Visa Debit Cards TYME Open 24 Hours 7 Days A Week 662 North 4th St., Tomahawk FR17 NEL240

The money raised amounts to something. It really means something, Since 1983, the Fall Ride has graciously donated proceeds to the MDA, and those proceeds have contributed to research and progress seen over the years. We have seen so much exciting progress with three new FDA-approved drugs in the past 10 months, and the Tomahawk Fall Ride attendees and supporters at SARA Park have a lot to do with that, said Nelsen. This past year, for the first time ever, there have been three MDA-funded, FDA-approved medications developed specifically for neuromuscular diseases. Two of the drugs have been approved for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and one for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The Fall Ride continues to be the biggest fundraiser in north central Wisconsin, and the money raised in this area stays in this area. There are so many activities and so much entertainment scheduled at SARA Park which is wonderful because SARA Park is the only location where 100 percent of the proceeds from the event go directly to the MDA, added Nelsen. Where else does the money go? MDA Care Centers MDA clients are able to see treatment providers all in one appointment such as MDA Continued on Page 9

11 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride MDA Continued from Page 7 neurologists, pulmonologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and equipment specialists. It can be an overwhelming challenge for our clients to attend an appointment so combining them into one appointment is so helpful, Nelsen noted. MDA Summer Camp For our kids living with muscular dystrophy or other muscle debilitating diseases, this is known to be the best week of the year! Not only is it fun and a place where they can just be a kid, it allows them to learn to advocate for themselves and their needs. What they experience and learn at camp helps them well into their adulthood. MDA Summer Camp gives them the courage to be independent and have confidence, Nelsen stated. Educational Seminars Kids are living longer, going to college and starting careers. These seminars coach them how to navigate higher education and the workforce as someone living with a disability, Nelsen added. Support Groups MDA wants not only our clients to have support, but support for the families that love them too, Nelsen said. Research MDA s overall mission is to find treatments and cures. Really, that is what our clients and their families are hoping for too. Your donations are making a HUGE difference, stated Nelsen. All proceeds from MDA bike raffle tickets for the 2017 FLHTCU Electra Glide Ultra Classic purchased at the MDA tent downtown, BP in Tomahawk and at SARA Park go directly to MDA. We are so grateful to everyone who attends or supports the Fall Ride. The local residents and visitors mean so much. We are so grateful to Harley, local businesses, the parks department and police. All of these people working together have made this event a well-oiled machine, concluded Nelsen. TRY THE NEW 2017 M*A*S*H TRIVIA CONTEST Test your knowledge of the TV show and/or luck with the 2017 M*A*S*H Trivia Contest to win a chance in the drawing for $25 gas cards to get you back home. 12 10 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride 2017 Blood Drive, Trivia Contest this year VFW M*A*S*H theme with downtown events; honoring veterans By Kathy Tobin Tomahawk Leader Editor Tomahawk s Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 is playing on a M*A*S*H theme as it takes to the streets as the overall planner for downtown events during this year s Tomahawk Fall Ride. The theme is particularly appropriate since the focus of the VFW s endeavors is veteran-based. M*A*S*H-themed Blood Drive New this year is a M*A*S*H Blood Drive that will take place Thursday, Sept. 14, between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the upstairs community room at Tomahawk Community Bank, 15 W. Wisconsin Ave. (Enter Door 1). VFW Auxiliary member Pat Haskin got the idea from a M*A*S*H blood drive that s been held in Merrill for years. It, too, is through The Community Blood Center out of Appleton and relies on the assistance of VFW and Auxiliary members. Haskin has worked at that event in the past. Pancake Breakfast with a Vet The Tomahawk VFW also will host a Pancake Breakfast with a Vet Thursday, Friday and Saturday of Fall Ride. The public is invited to dine with veterans between 8 and 11 a.m. at the VFW hall, 203 S. 4 th St. Look for the building with all the flags, Haskin states. That event is a great way to share in commaraderie, and honor and recognize veterans, she says. New display cases at the facility will feature related memorabilia, she says. Anyone who donates blood at the M*A*S*H blood drive early enough in the day will receive a free breakfast. The VFW is encouraging Fall Ride-goers to take in the daytime activities offered by the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) at SARA Park. But when nighttime rolls around, the VFW and downtown will shine. Downtown Events Set-up will begin Thursday night for the upcoming special downtown events. A VFW M*A*S*H Command Tent at the corner of West Wisconsin Avenue and South Second Street and will feature veteran displays and information. Local photographer and Vietnam veteran Bob Seitz will have VFW Continued on Page 12

Friday night s Thunder Parade of bikers will wind its way through the backroads and end up downtown for the first of two nights of Street Dances. Johnny Wad will be at the west end of Wisconsin Avenue and Rising Phoenix will be at the east end Friday from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday night it s HYDE to the west and The Bad Downs on the east end, again from about 7 to 11 p.m. The VFW will have beer and wine at beer stands dubbed The Swamp and Rosie s, as they continue the M*A*S*H theme. Haskin notes all tips the bartenders receive will go to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight and Wounded Warrior in Action Foundation. They re all volunteer bartenders who will take nothing home, she says of just some of the generosity people will find in Tomahawk. There also will be nightly entertainment and a full bar at the VFW building. M*A*S*H Trivia Contest Included in this Fall Ride Official Guide is a M*A*S*H Trivia contest. See if you know the answers and submit your entry at the VFW M*A*S*H Command Tent either Friday or until 5 p.m. Saturday for a chance at $25 gas gift cards. Why Honor Veterans? A large percentage of motorcycle riders are veterans, the VFW learned as it researched taking over the downtown events. It s the freedom of the open road that draws them, Haskin feels. So, the Fall Ride-veterans connection seems ever-so logical. Haskin, who s been deeply involved in planning the VFW activities, says their presence offers an opportunity for us to pay tribute to those who have served our country, which in itself I feel it s an honor to do. Pat notes her husband, Bill, is a veteran who was stationed in Okinawa serving in Vietnam in psychological warfare. She relates a visit he made to Korea once and the intense fear he experienced flying into the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). The servicemen were not told where they were going, but as they exited the plane they heard the loudspeaker click on and the word Welcome followed by each and every one of their names: Welcome, William Haskin. The enemy knew them by name! She says Bill never slept for the 10 days they were there. A lot of veterans have experienced something similar. It s a psychological thing with them, Pat adds. Many have terrific stories to tell. She feels privileged, she says, just to be quiet and listen like a fly on the wall. Compassion comes easy, she says. VFW Continued on Page 13

Along with a list of headline bands, there are also helicopter rides, a huge vendor and trade show area, Saturday s Custom and Classic Car Show, camping, contests, human Zorb bowling and food vendors from multiple genres. A Salute to Veterans Ceremony will be held Saturday afternoon with proceeds going towards the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Vending is free to the public on Friday and Saturday until 4 p.m. The Nokomis Fire Department will host a Pancake Breakfast on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 11 a.m. There will be non-denominational church services held under the big top each morning presented by the Christian Motorcyclists Association. Troutman emphasizes that charity was very important to his father. The MDA had a very special place in my father s heart, he said. 33 32 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride YEARS Fall Ride dates back to 1982 From Tomahawk Leader Files A group of 21 North Country Riders Motorcycle Club members getting together in October 1982 is the official inauguration of the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Money raised went to a charity, although not to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Harley-Davidson, Inc. and the Harley Owners Group came onboard in 1983 when about 300 riders on 160 motorcycles took part in an Oct mile ride along Lincoln County backroads. Afterwards, they were treated to free beer, brats and door prizes at the Tomahawk Harley- Davidson plant. Some $350 was raised for MDA Harley- Davidson s charity of choice through a $2 registration fee. In hope of more favorable motorcycling weather, the event was moved to early September in About 1,200 people on 676 cycles enjoyed the day, raising $3,200 for MDA. The Fall Ride moved permanently to SARA Park in Attendance estimates soared to 5,000 people that year and donations to MDA neared $10,000. The popular bike raffle was added a year later. A 1990 Harley-Davidson Sportster was the first cycle given away and was won by a Merrill man. In its 10 th year in 1991, the Thunder Parade rumbled for the first time through the streets of Tomahawk. An estimated 4,000 riders attended, even in pouring rain. Organizers upped the ante on the raffle bike, offering a new Big Twin FLHS Electra Glide Sport. More than $20,000 was raised for MDA. The brand new Tomahawk Harley-Davidson North Plant opened for tours during the 1995 Fall Ride. The crowd was estimated to be about 13,000 strong at its Saturday peak. All 30,000 raffle tickets were sold and the total donation to MDA topped $80,000. A green and gold raffle bike personally autographed by Green Bay Packers Coach and Harley-Davidson enthusiast Mike Holmgren commemorated the Packers Super Bowl championship in The donation to MDA topped $100,000, with more than $67,000 raised from the bike raffle alone. Attendance estimates hovered around 30,000 people and 15,000 motorcycles. About 1,600 riders participated in the Fun Runs and 1,000 rode in the Thunder Parade. A downtown street dance following the parade Friday night was added to the list of weekend activities. The Fall Ride s 20 th anniversary was observed in History Continued on Page 34

34 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride Proud Sponsor of the 300 Creske Avenue Rothschild, WI Phone: Fax: th Annual Tomahawk Fall Ride at SARA Park for MDA Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation recognizestomahawk VFW Post for continued support of Camp Hackett By Samantha Sue Trevino Tomahawk Leader Reporter Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation is an organization that exclusively works with Purple Heart recipients to help aid them in their recovery. No matter when the combat-wounded Purple Heart recipient served, the foundation will allow the recipient to take part in a no-costto-them, world-class, outdoor sporting activity. There is no shortage of activities to choose from with over 50 events across North America. Out of all the activities, Camp Hackett in nearby Phillips, Wis., is the most sought out by veterans. Thus, this year, which marks the 10 th annual Hunt, there will be two groups embarking on the adventure. Keeping it to smallscale activities, the hunts consist of three to five hunters and a guide. Camp Hackett is located on 410 acres of beautiful land in the Northwoods and truly is a wildlife paradise that produces a trifecta of trophy hunting, including Ruffed Grouse, Musky and Whitetail Deer, founder Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) John J. McDaniel shares. Wisconsin is leading the way! McDaniel exclaims. McDaniel states that Wisconsin is the most vibrant in terms of activities, is ground zero were it all started and where there is the most community involvement. Among other supporters, Tomahawk VFW Post 2687 has been supporting the foundation for several years. He notes that all year-round the VFW raises money and awareness for the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation and Camp Hackett; something they are very grateful for and would like to recognize, he says. For the first time, two raffle bikes were featured with a grand prize Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic and a second place Sportster. An estimated 4,000 bikes rode in the Thunder Parade which followed the northbound lanes of Hwy. 51, the highway s first traffic. A candlelight vigil was held as many bikers paused to honor those who died just a few days earlier in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. Harley-Davidson, the parent firm, marked its 100 th anniversary in big fashion in Milwaukee in The celebration also was noted at Tomahawk s 2003 Fall Ride as Harley-Davidson s Tomahawk Operations marked its own important milestone 40 years of being an integral part of the company and the Tomahawk community. A Blind Ride was offered for the first time during which the Tomahawk Lions Club and Northern Lights Harley Owners Group (HOG) took 14 visually-impaired people on the 18-mile Thunder Parade. Local MDA donations totaled $112,000. Perfect motorcycling weather Sept , 2004, pulled in an estimated 40,000 people and 20,000 motorcycles. Some $160,000 was raised for MDA, including $75,000 from raffle bike sales. Celebrating its 25 th milestone in 2006, the Tomahawk Fall Ride saw a record 45,000 visitors to the city with about $141,000 raised for MDA. A ceremony commemorated the quarter century milestone of the Ride at the Tomahawk Post Office with the unveiling of the first day cancellation of the 25-year anniversary Tomahawk Fall Ride cancel. The Tomahawk Downtown Business Council, Tomahawk Post Office and Tomahawk Leader teamed up to present one-of-a-kind 2007 Tomahawk Fall Ride collector items: two postcards, a limited-edition Fall Ride stamp and a special one-day motorcycle pictorial cancellation dated Sept. 14, The hosting community was in a bit of a funk in 2010 despite the excitement over welcoming our motorcycle friends. The rumble was back in the air and spirits were high as Tomahawk s Fall Ride s 30 th anniversary was celebrated. Dairyland Cycle Insurance became the official event sponsor in 2014, committing a $12,000 donation each of three years, plus promoting the Tomahawk event through billboards in large market areas around the state and mailings to Dairyland policy-holders as well as additional support and subsequent large donations to MDA. Wurl-Feind-Ingman VFW Post 2687 declared 2016 the Year of the Veteran, taking over the downtown Tomahawk portion of event planning during the 35 th anniversary observance. A M*A*S*H theme from the TV series was the focus of added enthusiasm, with a Command Center tent, and M*A*S*H look-alike, trivia and business window decorating contests, along with an emphasis on involving veterans in an even bigger Thunder Parade. Those proceeds supported veterans causes including the Never Forgotten Honor Flight and Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation, with MDA the continued shared focus at SARA Park, through the bike raffle and by other supporters.

37 36 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride 2017 Cost put at $19,000 Fall Ride is expensive for local police department But chief appreciates the freedom of the ride By Kathy Tobin Tomahawk Leader Editor The Tomahawk Fall Ride has a huge impact on the Tomahawk Police Department. It s a busy time for us, no doubt, acknowledges Police Chief Al Elvins. We not only have to worry about the safety of the 3,800 that we have in town, but we also have to worry about the safety of up to 30,000 that come to town, he notes. It takes all hands to make it work. It s an absolute team effort. The local department tries to keep costs down all year knowing that it will be hit hard in just a matter of a few days each September. The total local enforcement cost is anticipated at $19,000 again this year. Tomahawk s department will be at full force Wednesday through Sunday of Fall Ride. Sixteen mutual aid officers will be called upon Friday and 18 on Saturday. Requests for help go out to the Lincoln County Sheriff s Office and Merrill, Rhinelander and Antigo police departments. Everest Metro is next in line, then Wausau and, if things get tight, Marshfield is approached. Law enforcement works in two-person teams both in Continued on Page S. 39 38 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride 2017 Continued from Page 36 patrolling the streets and on the road. In theory you shouldn t be able to go a block or block and a half (downtown) without seeing an officer, Elvins says. The State Patrol also will have a presence, possibly with its motorcycle unit, if available, he adds. Tomahawk s VFW will provide its own security downtown, as will the Muscular Dystrophy Association at SARA Park. The local police get a small grant to help cover motor safety enforcement, but the rest of the funds with all the overtime are budgeted. Downtown streets will be closed to all but motorcycle traffic at 11 a.m. both Friday and Saturday, Elvins states. An accompanying detour will be the same as in the past. Elvins recognizes the importance of the extended weekend to the local economy. Plus, he notes, it gives visitors a good chance to check out hotels and restaurants. He also knows about the thrill of the ride, as well as the dangers. Elvins spent two years as a police motorcycle officer in Warner Robins, Ga. They patrolled 24-7, 365 days a year in all kinds of weather, unless there was ice. There very seldom was ice, he says. Back then it became too much of a job and the pleasure declined, and Elvins took a break from riding for several years. It s different when you have to do it every day, he notes. But now the bike owner says, I ride for pleasure, not for purpose. It s fun. It s enjoyable the two-wheel therapy. Elvins, however, also has been the victim of a motorcycle accident. He was on police patrol on a five-lane road when a truck hauling garbage in front of him lost part of its load. It was raining and Elvins had nowhere to go. As he slid, his bike went out from under him. He ended up in the hospital with a severe case of road rash. It s got a lot of freedom, he says of seeing the world from a bike. But, you certainly have to be more cautious when you re driving a motorcycle than a car. A lot of cars don t see motorcyclists, so we as a motorcycle driver have to be even more alert, he stresses. If history repeats itself, Fall Ride 2017 will generate a good, and respectful, crowd with minor incidents, Elvins says. Law enforcement also will be respectful and courteous in dealing with everyone, Elvins promises. They re going to be tolerant but not blind. Don t push the envelope, basically, he advises. It s a large undertaking. We want everybody to come and have a good time, but realize there are laws, Elvins states. Don t mistake kindness for weakness. 41 40 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride 2017 Medieval Castle tucked away in Northwoods attracts Fall Riders By Jennifer Ruid Tomahawk Leader Reporter Nestled deep in Tomahawk s Northwoods sits a modern-day castle straight out of the Middle Ages. Known as Kelley Arms, it is the brainchild of Pete Kelley of Wausau. During Tomahawk s Fall Ride, Kelley lowers his castle defenses and welcomes visitors to walk across the mote and step into a different place and time! As you approach the massive granite structure, get ready to be entertained in many different ways. During the Fall Ride weekend, Kelley surrounds the castle with characters straight out of the Middle Ages: dancers, battling knights armed with swords and music. Outside the castle are the cannons and stockades. Even with all the outside activity, the star of the Kelley Castle Continued on Page 41 FR17 MAH200

42 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride Kelley Castle Continued from Page 40 show is the castle itself, Kelley Arms. Kelley Arms has been a massive project for 30 years. Pete Kelley still considers the castle as an ongoing project. There is always work to be done, he says. Kelley toyed with the idea of building a castle when he was in high school. By the time he reached age 19 in 1977, he was committed to the huge project. Kelley is a resident of Wausau, and he inherited land on Lake Killarney in Tomahawk. In 1987, he began the overwhelming task of clearing the land, septic work and building a road. In 1992, construction began on the enormous landmark. Kelley is an electrician with a strong Kelley Arms, a 25-year ongoing project located near Tomahawk and open during the Fall Ride. knowledge of construction. If I didn t have the skill or equipment, I would go ahead and hire professionals such as plumbers, carpenters, and I worked with a mason for years, said Kelley. My family and friends often helped out. I only called on them sparingly. Otherwise, they might stop answering their phone, chuckled Kelley. My daughter, Arleen, spent so much time here when she was just a young child. I have many memories of working on the castle with her by my side, he added. When asked if he wanted to step into the Middle Ages and live in the castle year round, he replied, I used to, but I am not fond of the winter weather. I spend as much time as I can there now though. Kelley Arms is only open to the public during Fall Ride weekend. It is open Friday, Sept. 15, Saturday, Sept. 16 and Sunday, Sept. 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost to tour is only $3 per person. Take Highway 8 West to County Road Y. Head five miles north to Rice Road (follow signs on County Road Y). Go about a quarter mile west on Rice Road. The first driveway to the left leads to Kelley Arms.

In 1995, the North Plant was added to accommodate increased production of sidecars, windshields and the painting of starter motors. In 2002, Harley-Davidson added a 60,000-squarefoot facility on Kaphaem Road. A few years later, a 35,000-square-foot addition was built to house injection-molding operations. Shortly after that, windshield operations also moved to the Kaphaem Road plant. In 2014, Tomahawk Operations started painting Hard Candy Custom parts. This complex painting process required a new, innovative sanding cell and work process. The following year also saw several new process developments, including a new silkscreen machine, and a new router and state-of-the-art oven in the Windshield department. 47 46 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride 2017 Scenic rides you ll enjoy: Fun Rides and Thunder Parade FUN RUNS: Here s a great way to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and see the scenic Tomahawk area at the same time. Participate in a Fun Ride. They are all beautiful rides through our Northwoods and surrounding the Tomahawk area. We try to keep the rides around 100 miles each so that riders can enjoy all of the Fun Runs as well as participate in all the activities at SARA Park for MDA and surrounding festivities, noted one of the planners, Roxanne Consolver. Still in the planning stages when this book went to press, organizers were gearing up for three runs: an Orange Run, Chrome Run and Black Run. New to the game is the Orange Run with some new sponsors: Bottoms Up, Barry and Sherry s Town and Country, Z s Fork Horners and Road Lake Pub and Grill, said Consolver. Hopes were to add at least one more sponsor by the time Fall Ride rolled around. Next is the Chrome Run. These sponsors include Tom and Bev s on 107, Patty s Rib River Bar and Grill, and Tri- Mart BP, with two other hopefuls, Consolver said. The Black Run is the Up North run which includes stops at Lake of the Torches, Willow Wood Lodge and The Merc Stop, Roxanne noted, with two other sponsors possible. We (myself, my husband Kelly, and Barb and Steve Kubichek) do ride these rides ahead of time to make sure the directions are correct and that there has been no last minute road construction. We also touch base with the sponsors to confirm their hours of operation and any specials that they have to offer the riders. Fun Runs start and end at SARA Park on West Somo Avenue. Check there for more information about registering, getting a Fun Run card and a map of the routes. Rides can take place Friday and Saturday with completed cards turned back at SARA Park by late Saturday afternoon for a chance to win prizes. The money goes to MDA. FRIDAY NIGHT THUNDER PARADE: Everyone is encouraged to participate in the big Thunder Parade on Friday night, Sept. 15. It takes off at 6 p.m. (with lineup about 5:30 p.m.) from the Tomahawk School District complex on King/School Road. Participants travel in a long caravan along an 18-mile route through the scenic countryside, winding up in downtown Tomahawk just before that night s Street Dances get underway. Come join the procession and give a wave as you pass thousands of onlookers along the route. See map on opposite page.

52 Tomahawk Leader Fall Ride COME BACK AGAIN! We who live in Tomahawk year-round feel truly blessed by our surroundings and we re excited to share them with visitors whenever possible. So, we re glad you ve come and have a chance to look around. We are known for our scenic lakes and vast woods. We also are known for our strong work ethic, excellent medical and educational facilities, and those endless recreational opportunities. And then there s our can-do attitude and our acts of compassion for those in need. Tomahawk really is a great place to live, work, visit and ultimately retire. So, enjoy your time at this year s Tomahawk Fall Ride, and please keep us in mind when planning your next vacation or brief get-away. Consider us, too, for your business venture (Tomahawk Main Street in downtown, and the Tomahawk Chamber would gladly put you in touch with the right people to make it happen). Here are some tidbits you might not know: Tomahawk was founded by William H. Bradley in The city was incorporated in The Kwahamot Water Ski Club entertaining since 1961 provides free summer ski shows three times a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The group this August hosted the Division 2 Show Ski National Championships, the third time the community has been selected for the honor. By the way, Kwahamot is Tomahawk spelled backwards. Our free Venison Feed the Friday in November just before the opening of the gun deer season is the only one of its kind in the country. We close down a portion of downtown, pull out the grills and serve free venison burgers to all who attend. You ll note that Tomahawk also closes down West Wisconsin Avenue in downtown for the Fall Ride Thunder Parade, and Friday and Saturday night Street Dances. We like holding events right on our Main Street. Our July 4 th Pow Wow Days celebration includes a parade and water fights downtown and is a huge can t-be-missed reunion-like celebration. And, a few weeks ago we held our 10 th annual Thrilla On The Grilla barbecued ribs festival, once again pulling grills out on the main thoroughfare in town. Timm s Hill, a short distance from here off Hwy. 86, is the highest geographic point in Wisconsin. It s a scenic ride you would enjoy. To find out more about Tomahawk and to keep in touch the rest of the year, consider subscribing to the Tomahawk Leader newspaper, available online at A note that came to the Tomahawk Leader office during last year s Fall Ride:...We are in desperate need of more Fall Ride booklets. Out of the 3 we have available...everyone wants YOURS...we are almost out and it s not even the weekend! Please send more! Thanks a bunch.
