3 2 30 years and going strong Welcome to the Fall Ride for MDA By Jed Buelow Tomahawk Leader City Editor When a small group of friends set out to view the spectacular fall colors that abound in the greater Tomahawk area this time of year 30 years ago little did they realize what that maiden voyage would grow into today. A few more friends have joined the ride since then upwards of 40,000 strong each year making the Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA the biggest and one of the most anticipated motorcycle rallies in northern Wisconsin and beyond. This year marks a special milestone in Fall Ride history. For the past 30 years riders have been rumbling into this small Northwoods community to be part of the camaraderie 30 YEARS Continued on Page 4 Welcome Fall Riders! ATM 24 Hr. 5 4 30 YEARS Continued from Page 2 and great tradition that has allowed the motorcycle rally to grow into what it is today. For some the return is about the good times and nightlife, as the downtown, SARA Park, Nokomis Community Park, and a number of area taverns and other venues host live music throughout the weekend. There s any number of merchandise vendors scattered throughout the Tomahawk area selling motorcycle memorabilia. And there s also an endless list of ethnic and American food vendors. Many attending Fall Ride do so to reunite with good friends and to carry on a tradition that in some cases dates back generations. The varied scenic rides throughout the area also are part of what makes the Tomahawk Fall Ride so special. From Hwy. 107 to the Harrison Hills to Timm s Hill, the region is blessed with an abundance of wilderness, water and wildlife that can make a day out on the road so unique. 6 5 FR11 SUB YEARS Continued from Page 4 is to do over the long weekend are certainly big draws, but there is an even more important reason behind the event. The annual motorcycle rally serves as the biggest fundraiser for the regional MDA, each year raising around $100,000 that goes toward research and to benefit area families suffering from the disease. Since the MDA became the official beneficiary of the Fall Ride, well over $1 million has been raised through Harley-Davidson motorcycle raffles, events taking place at SARA Park and through contributions made by other organizations and individuals. Talk about a great reason to ride. Whether it s your first Fall Ride, your 15th or your 30th, there s one thing that never changes: The excitement can literally be felt as the rumble of motorcycles fills the air, telling stories of steel horse journeys ending and new ones just getting underway. Kick up the kickstand, kick back and stay a while. We hope you enjoy the 30 th annual Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA. 9 8 MDA is the charity: This is what your dollars will buy The charity is right in the name: Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA. But how does your money help the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)? And what will your dollar buy? In 2011 a contribution of: $30 buys a flu shot $74 One minute of research $150 One occupational, physical, respiratory or speech therapy consultation $300 Professional fees related to initial diagnostic work-up at an MDA clinic. $500 Annual repairs of durable medical equipment $800 Week at MDA summer camp for one child. 77 percent of every dollar MDA spends goes directly to research, services and education; 14 percent to fundraising; and 9 percent for administration costs. MDA spends $74 a minute in its worldwide research program, supporting more than 330 projects. MDA maintains some 200 clinics, including more than 35 MDA/ ALS centers. MDA annual sponsors nearly 80 weeklong summer camp sessions, serving some 3,500 children across the country and in Puerto Rico. More than 4,300 volunteers give a week of their time to serve as MDA camp counselors and medical staff. MDA s equipment program accepts donations of gently used durable medical equipment, repairs these items as needed, and provides them to individuals with neuromuscular disease to enhance mobility, independence and quality of life. 11 10 T/P-ing Tomahawk: They ve got your butt covered By Kathy Tobin Tomahawk Leader Editor Riders of the Cross Chapter #1058 of the Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) has an information booth and runs the kiddie rides at SARA Park during Tomahawk s Fall Ride. The chapter also holds church services at 9:30 a.m. Sunday (this year Sept. 18) at both SARA Park and Bubba s Big Party in Nokomis Park. But their outreach to bikers and the community does not end there. For the last couple of years members have addressed a dirty job that needed doing cleaning out, freshening and restocking with toilet paper the porta-potties downtown. We call this our T/P outreach, notes secretary Roxanne Consolver, and those who help out earn the right to buy a patch that says, I T/P D Tomahawk: We ve Got Your Butt Covered. Jobs that are available include garbage dude, wiper, spritzer and t/p er, among others. Each team is restocked by a couple who have a trike that pulls a trailer loaded with supplies and toilet paper. The outreach gained attention from our brothers and sisters of Rolling Thunder Chapter 4 who donated funds for supplies and assisted with the effort, Consolver noted. Help from anyone who s willing to don some gloves and get down and dirty is greatly appreciated. It may be a disgusting job, but you re loved by everyone once the potty is spritzed up and toilet paper is restocked. This year members are adding the porta-potties at SARA Park to their efforts, so extra hands will definitely be welcomed. Learn more about this group and their weekly meetings at contact-us.aspx and on Facebook. And, if you see these Good Samaritans out there during Fall Ride, give them a high five! Well, maybe you better not. A thumbs up might be best! Look for Fall Ride pictures at Chapter #1058 Christian Motorcyclists Association Come see us at SARA Park or at Bubba s Here when you need us! 13 12 Lincoln County Cycles moves to new location Attendees at this year s Fall Ride might notice Lincoln County Cycles is no longer located on North Fourth Street in Tomahawk. It s not that the bike shop and motorcycle accessory store fell victim to tough economic times; quite the contrary. Lincoln County Cycles owner Mike Messinger said the shop located at 851 N. 4th St. had become too crowded. Instead of adding on and trying to accommodate growing demands, Messinger decided to build a new facility, and he did so recently in a big way. Located near the Highway 51 and State Hwy. 86 intersection, behind Crossroads Mobil and next to the Rodeway Inn & Suites east of town, the new Lincoln County Cycles shop provides almost three times as much space as existed in the former facility. The 11,600-square-foot building that includes display areas in the front and large motorcycle service areas and storage room in the back was completed about a month in advance of this year s Fall Ride. Messinger said his dedicated customers, many of whom even showed up to help move equipment from one shop to another, are to thank for making the upgrade possible. The new Lincoln County Cycles area includes a front showroom where motorcycle accessories and parts are on display. Another area will display motorcycles for sale. Messinger said the additional service portion of the facility would allow Lincoln County Cycles to provide more services, which already included a full-service shop for different makes and models. Messinger, who is a rider himself, invites anyone needing emergency repairs done to stop out he noted his professional crew will do everything possible to get bikes up and running as soon as possible during the Fall Ride. Messinger also invites the public to stop and see the new facility. Lincoln County Cycles is located at 1735 Comfort Dr. They can be contacted by calling or ride on over to their website at

21 20 Major projects since last fall: New bridge, N. 4 th facelift By Jed Buelow Tomahawk Leader City Editor jbuelow@tomahawkleader.com Tomahawk might look a bit different to those attending Fall Ride this year, as one of the city s main thoroughfares received a major facelift since last fall. At just about the same time the last motorcycle was rumbling out of town at the conclusion of the 2010 Fall Ride, large cranes and other construction equipment moved in to begin the largest construction project ever to take place inside the city limits. Over a 12-month span, the bridge connecting the north and south sides of town and the road along one of the city s busiest business corridors were torn out and replaced. By early October of last year, Veterans Memorial Bridge was gone. For nine months the gaping hole in the heart of the community proved a bit of an inconvenience, as motorists were faced with a detour that included using the Highway 51 bypass. Tomahawk received regional and even some national MAJOR PROJECTS Continued on Page 23 Welcome Bikers! 24 23 MAJOR PROJECTS Continued from Page 20 notoriety as fall gave way to winter and the mother of all invention, necessity, or perhaps annoyance over the detour, kicked in. As ice continued to thicken on the Wisconsin River, an unofficial road appeared across the frozen landscape and a few brave souls began venturing out. Soon a virtual four-lane highway developed over the frozen river. For several weeks the ice road provided a welcomed shortcut for many motorists (some called them crazy), before unseasonably early rains forced it to close. Crews from Lunda Construction continued to work on the bridge almost the entire winter. Also last fall, work got underway to completely replace a stretch of road and infrastructure along North Fourth Street from the bridge to CTH A north of town. Veterans Memorial Bridge was completed ahead of schedule, and after nearly nine months of being closed, was opened to traffic before Tomahawk s well-attended Fourth of July festivities got underway. The new road design, which needed to be completed before Fall Ride, includes new sidewalks, bicycle lanes, boulevards and a center left turn lane. The bridge features sidewalks, bicycle lanes and a pedestrian underpass that connects Veterans Memorial Park and the River Walk Trail on the opposite side of North Fourth Street. Biker Friendly! 37 36 Celebrating 30 years: Tomahawk Fall Ride for MDA history By the Tomahawk Leader A group of 21 North Country Riders Motorcycle Club members getting together in October 1982 is the official inauguration of the Tomahawk Fall Ride. Money raised went to a charity, although not to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Harley-Davidson, Inc. and the Harley Owners Group came onboard in 1983 when about 300 riders on 160 motorcycles took part in an Oct mile ride along Lincoln County backroads. Afterwards, they were treated to free beer, brats and door prizes at the Tomahawk Harley-Davidson plant. Some $350 was raised for MDA Harley-Davidson s charity of choice through a $2 registration fee. In hopes of more favorable motorcycling weather, the event was moved to early September in About 1,200 people on 676 cycles enjoyed the day, raising $3,200 for MDA. The Fall Ride moved permanently to SARA Park in Attendance estimates soared to 5,000 people and 1,500 motorcycles that year, and the donation to MDA neared $10,000. The popular bike raffle was added a year later. A 1990 Harley- Davidson Sportster was the first cycle given away and was won by a Merrill man. In its 10th year in 1991, the Thunder Parade rumbled for the first time through the streets of Tomahawk. An estimated 4,000 riders attended the ride, even in pouring rain. Event organizers upped the ante on the raffle bike, offering a new Big Twin FLHS Electra Glide Sport. More than $20,000 was raised for MDA at the decade-old event. The brand new Tomahawk Harley-Davidson North Plant opened for tours during the 1995 Fall Ride. The crowd was estimated to be about 13,000 strong at its Saturday afternoon peak. All 30,000 raffle tickets were sold, and the total donation to MDA topped $80,000. A green and gold raffle bike personally autographed by Green Bay Packers Coach and Harley-Davidson enthusiast Mike Holmgren commemorated the Packers Super Bowl championship in The donation to MDA that year topped $100,000, with more than $67,000 raised from the bike raffle alone. Attendance estimates hovered around 30,000 people and 15,000 motorcycles. About 1,600 riders participated in Fun Runs and 1,000 rode in the Thunder Parade. A downtown street dance following the parade Friday night was added to the list of weekend activities. The Fall Ride s 20th anniversary was observed in The event helped observe the opening of the State Hwy. 51 four-lane bypass. For the first time, two raffle bikes were featured with a grand prize Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic and a second place Sportster. An estimated 4,000 bikes rode in the Thunder Parade, which followed the northbound lanes of Hwy. 51, the new highway s first traffic. A candlelight vigil was held as many bikers paused to honor those who died just a few days earlier in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. Harley-Davidson, the parent firm, marked its 100th anniversary in big fashion in Milwaukee in The celebration also was noted at Tomahawk s 2003 Fall Ride as Harley-Davidson s Tomahawk Operations noted its own important milestone HISTORY Continued on Page 38

39 38 HISTORY Continued from Page years of being an integral part of the company and the Tomahawk community. A Blind Ride was offered for the first time during which the Tomahawk Lions Club and Northern Lights Harley Owners Group (HOG) took 14 visually-impaired people on the 18-mile Thunder Parade. Local MDA donations totaled $112,000. Perfect motorcycling weather Sept , 2004, pulled in an estimated 40,000 people and 20,000 motorcycles. Some $160,000 was raised for MDA, including $75,000 from raffle bike sales. Gracie Mickelson, 10, Tomahawk, who lives with the neuromuscular disease juvenile dermatomyositis, was the Ride s MDA Goodwill Ambassador in Celebrating its 25th milestone in 2006, the Tomahawk Fall Ride saw a record 45,000 visitors to the city with about $141,000 raised for MDA. A ceremony commemorated the quarter century milestone of the Ride at the Tomahawk Post Office with the unveiling of the first day cancellation of the 25-year anniversary Tomahawk Fall Ride cancel. The hosting community was in a bit of a funk in 2010 despite the excitement over welcoming our motorcycle friends. Our local Harley-Davidson plant had just finished a union vote that would help keep the company in Tomahawk and Wisconsin and we were only weeks away from the closure of Veterans Memorial Bridge for removal and total reconstruction. The latter proved to be a financial burden on the community as well as an inconvenience for the next nine months.. The bridge has reopened and additional roadwork on North Fourth Street was timed for completion just before this year s Fall Ride. The rumble is back in the air and spirits are high.
