Message from the Editor Hello and welcome to the new look magazine, with a new name. The name came about as I was making up a mock-up for the front cover. With the words Brampton and Magazine typed in two lines that described exactly what it is, and so it became. Having not been involved with magazine editing or done little layout since I worked on free local papers over 35 years ago in Ipswich, when it was all manual typesetting and paste-up, the whole experience of putting together a new magazine seemed daunting. However with a bit of help from Viv, the magazine will soon be landing on your doormat. We hope that you will enjoy reading The Brampton Magazine. The photograph on the front cover was taken by Dr. Pat Doody last spring and shows the beauiful Bluebells in Brampton Wood. The Wildlife Trust has organised guided walks to Brampton Wood this month to see the Bluebells on Sunday 1 May. Dr Doody says Spring is early this year but the annual walk will go ahead, we suspect that the Bluebells may not be at their best, however there will still be plenty to see and hear. If you would like to join one of the walks on 1 May, please meet at the Brampton Wood carpark at or Everyone is welcome. Don t forget your cameras! 4 1,000 mile charity bike ride to Spain AIMING TO RAISE 500 IN AID OF MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT District Councillor for Brampton, John Morris will cycle 1,000 miles in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support in May over 19 days and hopes to raise 500 for charity. John will set off from Brampton on his own and unsupported. He will cycle to Portsmouth and catch the ferry to St Malo in France. John said I will cycle down the west coast of France, a quick sprint over the Pyrenees and then along the rugged north coast of Spain to Santander. If it all goes to plan I will catch the ferry from Santander back to Portsmouth and then cycle back to Brampton on the final 2 days of my ride. Most people know someone who has been affected by cancer and Macmillan nurses do some great work supporting people who have this terrible life threatening disease. John works as a driver for Vindis Group in Huntingdon and also drives a mini bus for HACT the Huntingdonshire Community transport charity. He is also a member of St Ives Cycling Club and Godmanchester Cycling Club. Vindis Group hopes to raise 52,000 over 2 years for Macmillan Cancer Support and any money that John raises on his epic bike ride will be added towards this total. To sponsor John and to find out more about his charity bike ride go to: call us on If you live in the Huntingdonshire area did you know you could have a FREE unlimited access to a five day a week RING-AND-RIDE transport service that picks you up from your door. 5 Local Accents and Dialects BRIAN GEBBELS, CHAIRMAN, BRAMPTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY We meet bi-monthly on the fourth Wednesday of the month in the Brampton Institute Stocker Room at 7.45pm. Our subscription, a modest 5.00 per year, encompasses all meetings with talks on a variety of subjects throughout the year the room is generally full! The Society also organises an annual summer outing loosely connected to history. This year the theme is Shakespeare s Stratford commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Great Bard s death. At our March meeting, a talk, entitled Local Accents and Dialects was entertainingly given by Professor Mike McCarthy; with such a title our members were not quite sure what to expect or even if they would be able to understand it! Mike introduced the talk by using the phrase, linguistic landscape! What does that mean! Language, phraseology and accents emanate and are inherited from particular areas and linguistic landscape is the technical term. Professor Mike was most adept at using various accents, Scouse, Birmingham, Cockney, Fenland and many others and he kept the members amused with his mimicry. We all received a reminder of our school day Standard English language lessons, conjugating the verb to be and its corruption by some if not most! in phraseology such as I do be ; We was ; Ain t!! We are all guilty of it but that is the beauty of language. Our further enlightenment included words such as diphthong, orthoepists! I am sure that you know what the first word is but the second? those who study the correct pronunciation of words! Ancient local words such as horkey and pagles were also mentioned, the former being the celebrations at the end of the harvest and the latter, cow slips you live and learn. Expressions such as straight as a pound of candles (skinny) and in an out like a dog at a fair (busy) and many others, too many to list, were amusingly explained by Mike. Mike made particular mention of the inhabitants of the nearby village of Toft, the phraseology and accents of whom were subject to a detailed study back in the 1970s. It is very difficult to put into words, no pun intended, how Professor Mike related the variations in accents and local language and its derivation, suffice it to say that it was a most interesting and entertaining meeting. I will finish by asking you to use your imagination for an accent with the following colloquial saying: toom floys and a hooman doys they have a fooneral with sad moosic! The next meeting of the BHS is on Wednesday 25 May when a talk, entitled The Medieval Archaeology of Huntingdon will be given by Mr Chris Thatcher. 5

St George s Close SECOND IN THE SERIES GIVING BACKGROUND TO BRAMPTON S STREET NAMES Annie Hodgkinson was born in Gravesend in She later moved to Boston, USA, where her son David Hinkley Hodgkinson was born in In the late 19th century they returned to England. In March 1871, David Hodgkinson, M.R.C.S. bought the old Model Lodge House at auction for 670. Lady Olivia Bernard Sparrow had left this to the parish on her death to be used as a girls school but it had proved unsatisfactory as a Dame School. The money was used to build a new school in Church Road which is now the basis of the Church Hall. Dr. Hodgkinson demolished part of the building and built the house now known as The Grange as a home for his widowed, blind mother. With a staff of six he lived there as well for a number of years, later buying St George s (which stood on land previously part of the 18th century Lordship Farm) for his own use. Land to the north of St George s was owned by Mr Parnwell, who had a stone inserted into the brick wall between the properties stating The property of J. Parnwell extends 4½ inches beyond this wall. The name commemorates St. George s School which Dr. Hodgkinson established on the site in It was to give a good education to boys of the Middle Class. In 1881 it had 83 boarders. Some copies of the school magazine The Bramptonian, from 1878 to 1880, are held at the County Library, more are at the Norris Museum, as is a copy of Chants, XL, selected and arranged for use in the school chapel, by DH Hodgkinson. He later moved to Emerson Cottage in Buckden Road and the school moved south. 6 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

When the building was sold by a later resident in 1936 the estate agents described it thus: A DELIGHTFUL RESIDENCE known as St. Georges situate in the popular village of Brampton, containing: 3 Reception, 6 Principal Beds. And 6 Secondary Beds., 2 Bathrooms, Domestic Offices, E.L. Gardens and Grounds. Outbuildings. Vacant Possession on Completion. There are a number of other buildings in the village which DHH had built; his initials appear on their facades, as at St Luke s in the High Street (where coincidentally Miss Rose Ann Parnwell lived in the early 20th century) and also on a stone below the window on the side of London House. He had alterations done to this building in 1892, including the insertion of a window in the end overlooking two cottages; He had to pay the cottagers a yearly 5 shillings as compensation. St George s Close is a relatively new development on land previously owned by the RAF. It was part demolished in the late 1960s leaving just a building used as a gymnasium by the RAF and a couple of married quarters; these were demolished completely in the late 1980s. Affordable Housing for Local People Action Group 513 households supported the objective of providing affordable housing to people with a connection to Brampton. Such housing can only be provided on land which is made available at very modest cost, generally rural exception sites that is sites where an exception is made to normal planning policy to allow affordable homes to be built to help meet local housing need. We are looking for local residents with planning, development or Housing Association experience or with a good knowledge of land use in and around Brampton to join a small group tasked with making affordable housing for local people a reality. Please contact Lin Sinclair on or sinclair878@icloud.com. Opening Times Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday Closed Last Collections Weekdays Saturday

Brampton Biodiversity Project HOTSPOT REPORT OUSE WILLOWS WET WOODLAND BORDERING RIVER GREAT OUSE In 2013/2014 a two year project began with the aim of providing a comprehensive description of the Parish its landscape, history and natural history by engaging people in the parish in the collection and collation of information. Despite having a highly modified landscape the Parish retains a remarkable series of habitats. During the course of the surveys a number of Hot Spots were identified. These have been described in individual reports. This one describes a small wet woodland bordering the River Great Ouse. The woodland dominated by Salix spp. has invading hybrid Black Poplar Populus x canadensis. Sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus is also much in evidence. This is an unusual woodland type which occurs intermittently along the River Great Ouse. A Community recording day in June 2013 produced a list of 42 plant species list (see below). In addition, the site includes a small pond, which supports breeding moorhen, mallard and several dragonflies and damselflies. Plant species recorded: Garlic Mustard, Wild Angelica, Cow Parsley, Greater Burdock, Lesser Burdock Mugwort, Lords-and-Ladies, Barren Brome, Large Bindweed, Cuckooflower, Lesser Pond-sedge, Greater Pond-sedge, Creeping Thistle, Spear Thistle, Wild Teasel, Great Willowherb, 8 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Beautiful Bluebells of Brampton Wood A GUIDED WALK WITH THE WILDLIFE TRUST ON SUNDAY 1ST MAY The Huntingdonshire Local Group of the Wildlife Trust invites you to come and experience the delights of a carpet of bluebells in this ancient woodland, which lies on our doorstep. You are welcome to share this enchanting scene by participating in a guided walk through Brampton Wood on Sunday 1st May. This year there will be two walks; one at and one at George Cottam, who is Warden of Brampton Wood, will lead us through this woodland where a rich variety of flora can be seen. His aim will be to highlight the beautiful scent, colour and freshness of the bluebells that encapsulate the essence of a traditional English spring. We also expect to see other woodland flora such as wood anemone, primrose and dogs mercury; early butterflies such as speckled wood, brimstone and orange tip; and we will also listen for the singing of the woodland birds. Everyone is most welcome to attend. Please meet at Brampton Wood Car Park, Grafham Road, Brampton at or GR TL Park in the Trust car park. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. For more information please contact George on Part of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. Registered Charity No: , Meadow Magic WILDLIFE TRUST UPWOOD MEADOWS WALK ON SUNDAY 22ND MAY 2:30PM Kevin Doidge, the voluntary warden, and other local wildlife experts, will guide us through these ancient meadows. A rich variety of flowers should be seen in the three meadows that have been largely undisturbed by modern farming methods. We hope to see green winged orchids, mousetail, meadow cranesbill, lady s bedstraw and yellow rattle. Elusive turtle doves can sometimes be seen and heard. Kevin explains that this National Nature Reserve is one of the finest examples of ancient meadows that can still be found locally and was shaped by the medieval agricultural methods of ploughing with oxen. Everyone is most welcome to attend. Please meet at Upwood Meadows Car Park, Meadow Lane, Upwood at Grid reference TL Parking is limited so visitors are encouraged to car share, walk or cycle. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. For more information please contact Tim on THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Memorial Garden HELP NEEDED Those of you who use the Memorial Centre and sports field may have noticed the Memorial Garden and Memorial Trees at the rear of the playing fields. During the winter the garden became overgrown and full of weeds and over the last couple of weeks I have been trying to tidy and weed it. However it has become obvious that it is too much work for one person and it would be so much easier and more fun to have some help. So if there is anyone out there who is willing to spend a couple of hours a month helping to weed and trim, please do get in touch! Anne Saunders or klanky39@hotmail.com Brampton Languages Club A NEW IDEA FOR BRAMPTON We are thinking about setting up a Brampton Languages Club. Depending on who would like to join, we could: refresh our knowledge of languages we did at school e.g. French and German. find out about new languages and perhaps learn a few basics, drawing on the expertise of Brampton residents who are native speakers of languages other than English help newcomers in the village to improve their knowledge of English. learn how to help our children or grandchildren with their language learning at school. Brampton Befrienders Call in to the Community Centre on Fridays for Coffee, Cakes and Chat Meet your friends Make new friends We have no set idea yet of how this might work out in detail and, depending on who expresses an interest, we might form a number of sub-groups. The idea would be to try and meet about monthly. The expectation is that group leaders would act in that capacity on a voluntary basis so there would be no evening class charge. If, however, we need to hire somewhere to meet, there would be a small charge to cover costs. If this is of interest to you, please Peter Downes peterdownes42@aol.co.uk specifying what aspect of a Languages Club might be of interest to you. We will see what happens! 11

Brampton Community Bus The Community Bus proposal in the Community-Led Plan Survey resulted in 289 people saying they or their family would use the bus; 51 volunteered to help to run the service and 46 volunteered to drive. The Action Group is meeting with, Gavin Moulton Community Transport Officer, Passenger Transport Team, Cambridgeshire County Council on 11th April to start to move the project forward. In order to define the service required we will look at other transport organisations which are already in place such as HACT, Albram, Shopmobility, and Luminus Out and About scheme. At the same time we must be mindful of the services provided by Stagecoach through the village and their proposal for services through Brampton Park. Ultimately it may prove to be a service for having fun: helping people who are no longer able to drive or who are too young to drive to get out and about with like-minded people to attend sports matches, shows and places of interest which would otherwise elude them. If you would like to join the Community Bus Action Team please call me on or me on sinclair878@icloud.com. COUNCILLORS SURGERIES First Saturday of each month 10 11am in the Scout Hut Brampton Cycling club A NEW CLUB IN BRAMPTON As a result of the Community Led Survey, Brampton now has its own Cycling Club and is looking for members (riders and supporters) to join our regular rides. To start with there will be regular 20 mile+ road outings with a stop off for teas and cake (or coffee and whatever takes your fancy). Riders can take shorter rides and join us for the break if they so wish. In the longer term we are looking for Ride Leaders for: - off-the-road (MTB) rides; - family short rides; - ladies only rides if there is such a demand The club is also interested in anyone who is a qualified first aider to provide support or someone who is willing to provide training for Ride Leaders to qualify. If there is enough interest, we will be looking for a club transport provider (and or sponsor) to provide transportation to and from nearby sportives. If your company would like to sponsor our club, its cycling kit and activities please contact me via downing.terry@gmail.com. We plan to have our first Sunday morning 20 mile (shorter for some) ride on the 22nd May starting from outside Brampton School at 09:30. For those who are online you can join Brampton Cycling Club on Sky Go Ride web site at 12 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Brampton Speed Watch A YEAR ON RESULTS FEEDBACK The Brampton Community Speed Watch has been operating for just on a year under the careful guidance and training of Cambridgeshire Constabulary. As a group of volunteers we thought that it would be prudent to give some public feedback on the results so far. During the period up to February 2016, we have recorded over 800 speeding vehicles against 45 hours of deployment. A few vehicles have been recorded twice during this time! Each deployment lasts for one hour and is normally scheduled for peak times, but not exclusively. We have 12 volunteers, who have given their time for the important activity of trying to make Brampton a safer place. Our duty it is to accurately record those offenders using police calibrated equipment. All offenders within the time of the deployment are reported to the police who will deal with the matter appropriately and could result in points on the licence! When on deployment we are completely visible and whilst we believe we act as a deterrent and the majority do take notice, it is also frustrating that there are the few who believe that they are above the law! Below is a graph of number of vehicles versus speed in m.p.h It shows that 80% of speeding offences are within the 36 to 40 mph, leaving 20% of offences at or above 41mph. At the extreme, we have recorded 4 vehicles at 50mph or greater (one at 61 mph!) If you wish to give some time to this very important initiative and allow us to increase the number of deployments, please contact the team at csw.brampton@yahoo.co.uk and one of us will get back to you. We look forward to hearing from you. Number of vehicles by speed (mph) 13

Brampton Village Primary School Welcome to this update from the school! It is a pleasure to be able to write as Headteacher, having taken up the post last September. The school is an exciting place to be and the children are wonderful to work with. You will be aware of all the building work that has taken place and we are enjoying all the additional space. We are getting ready to expand and look forward to a possible third class in Reception from next September. This academic year is flying past and the children have had opportunities to visit a number of different places, including the British Museum, the Science Museum and Warwick Castle as well as being able to walk around the village and learn about its history. The school is well supported by our PTA and events are advertised on a regular basis please do come along when possible. There is a strong tradition of music at the school and children from our choir sang at Hinchingbrooke Hospital before Christmas. We also have a number of sports teams who achieve success on a regular basis and we were delighted to be awarded the Sainsbury s School Games Silver Mark award recently. As Headteacher I am aware of the importance of being part of this community and we all look forward to strengthening the links that already exist. The latest information from the school is always available on our website which is Regards Peter Allen Headteacher 16 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

Update by Revd Jason Taylor AROUND THE PARISHES OF BRAMPTON, ELLINGTON AND GRAFHAM In a slight change from my usual letters I want to give a few general updates this month on what is happening in and around the parishes of Brampton, Ellington and Grafham. 1. Many of you will know that we are in the midst of Pastoral Reorganisation, meaning that the three parishes of Brampton, Ellington and Grafham are going to become one single parish called East Leightonstone (I didn t choose the name but for reasons too complex to go into here, that s the name we will have). A few things about this: Firstly none of the existing churches are going to close. I am hearing that some people think this is the case but I can assure you that it isn t. Baptisms, weddings and funerals will continue as usual in all three churches although there are some legalities that need to be gone through in the case of Ellington and Grafham with respect to weddings. Everything is going ahead as previously publicised but we have experienced some delays due to formal objections to the scheme raised by residents outside of the parishes of Brampton, Ellington and Grafham. This has slowed us down and is frustrating but I hope that soon everything will be finalised and the new parish formed. 2. You may notice scaffolding around parts of the churches at Grafham and Brampton for the next few months. This is because both churches are having roof repairs. The interior of both churches remain accessible and services will continue as usual. 3. I m sorry to report that thieves have broken into the cash collection box for the second-hand book stall at Grafham. There is never more than a few pounds in this as it is emptied every evening but, needless to say, it has been upsetting for the good people who look after the church at Grafham. 4. The Archbishops have written to every serving parish priest in the Church of England expressing their longing to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the Church of England and many other Churches from 8th-15th May. The week of prayer will culminate in Beacon Events around the country over Pentecost weekend, where people will pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit and the confidence to share their faith. In their letter the Archbishops said: At the heart of our prayers will be words that Jesus himself taught us Thy kingdom come, thy will be done. It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. It is famous enough to be spoken each day 18 THE Brampton MAGAZINE

by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory. The Archbishops are suggesting various ways churches can engage with the week of prayer. These include holding a day or week of continuous 24/7 prayer as parishes, teams or deaneries; saying special prayers in Sunday worship; prayer walking; or handing out a novena prayer card to every congregation member. Please keep an eye out for further information on things happening in Brampton, Ellington and Grafham as part of this initiative. 20 Mothers Union BY JULIE ANDERSON, SECRETARY It was full house when our Diocesan President Susan Baker came to speak at our afternoon meeting in Hilary Lodge. Susan spoke about her role as Diocesan President but also about how impressed she has been with the support local branches give to their communities. Susan will be speaking again at the evening meeting in September. At our evening meeting in the church hall on Tuesday 10th May at 8.00pm, Jan Edwards will be speaking about Brampton Befrienders. This is a chance for those of us who know little or nothing about the group, to find out more about what goes on when they meet together on Friday mornings. At our afternoon meeting on Tuesday 17th May at 2.30pm which takes place at Hilary Lodge, Jude from the Godmanchester Food Bank will be speaking. This proved to be a very lively and interesting meeting when Jude spoke at our evening meeting, so I would encourage anyone who hasn t heard her speak to come along. Even if you think you know all there is to know about Food Banks, I can assure you that you will learn something new. It is worth remembering that the majority of Food Banks all over the country were started and are run by churches. All our meetings are open to non-members and there is no charge apart from a small voluntary contribution towards refreshments. 21 St James the Least of All ON THE PERILS OF THE CHURCH PICNIC The Rev Dr Gary Bowness continues his tongue in-cheek letters from Uncle Eustace My dear Nephew Darren The Rectory, St. James the Least A Spring parish picnic is always a good idea although you must bear some details in mind. First, whatever date you choose will turn out be the wettest of the year. English picnics are invariably eaten under umbrellas while wearing Wellingtons and the sort of determinedly cheerful look that defies anyone to admit they would rather be home in front of the fire. Second, no matter how early in the year, wasps will emerge from hibernation in huge numbers, and terrorise Mrs Hornby with the picnic baskets. And thirdly, someone will bring along their (hungry) dog. Last time Colonel Psmith s spaniel outdid herself: she leapt up, head butted a piece of Madeira cake out of Mrs Horngirdle s hand and ate the lot before even a crumb could touch the ground. A good piece of field work, that. Half way through the afternoon, some over-excited member of the party will decide to arrange a game of rounders. (Mr Poppinjay tried this once one year, as in his youth he had been athletic. Fortunately, the ambulance got there quickly, and the ankle healed well.) Then the mothers who join in will completely ignore the ball sailing past them, while they discuss some burning topic of Mothers Union gossip. In the meantime, the young choir members, who were the reason for arranging the game in the first place, will have drifted off to the lake to throw stones at the ducks while no one is looking. For our annual picnic, I use my own car, making sure it is so full of clerical robes and church magazines that no one else can fit in. Throughout the day, I keep returning to it to make sure no one has broken in to steal the Communion wine and taking the opportunity to catch up on the cricket scores. By the middle of the afternoon, I usually remember that some urgent duty, such as blessing a traction engine, demands my departure. The rest of the party, by now soaked, cold and knowing the coach to take them home is still several hours off, only wish they had such demanding work to tear them away. Your loving uncle Eustace 21

Ladies Netball RESTARTING SOON ON MONDAYS If you would like to come along on Monday evenings pm to the MUGA, Thrapston Road playing fields to join the ladies netball group we would be delighted to see you, Please contact me on or aol.com. We are a very mixed age group/ standard and just play a friendly game. There has been a break during the cold winter months but the plan is to restart at the end of May. So please get in touch. Brampton Football Club WIN A HUNTS FA TROPHY In front of a crowd of 240 at the Godmanchester Rovers David Wilson Homes Ground on 16th March, Brampton s first team who play their games in the Cambs Kershaw Premier Division, set out to win a hunts FA trophy for the second time in 12 months. On the first occasion last season the team had lost narrowly to the Peterborough League outfit Stilton Utd. by a goal scored in the dying minutes of the game. This time, the team, under manager Wayne Ambler was determined to attack from the start to get an early advantage over Warboys Town, also of the Peterborough League. In a blistering 20 first half minutes Brampton overwhelmed their opponents and scored twice through Ollie Vale and the club s leading scorer Danny Cain. The score remained like this to the break. Warboys, who had already looked defeated showed their metal and came back strongly with a goal at the beginning of the second period. They monopolised the game for a while and had more chances with Nick Parker in the Brampton goal showing his shot stopping ability. Brampton got back into the game then and missed further chances to increase their lead whilst their defenders kept Warboys out. Those present agreed it was a cracking game, paid tribute to both sides and watched Brampton s delighted team of players and staff accept the cup and their winners medals. Currently, with the season drawing to a close, both of our teams are performing well in their respective divisions and look like getting a top half finish. Ambler commented, If we d started better we could have had a top three finish this year. Reserve Team Asst. Manager, Darrell May said, I am impressed by our side and I will be looking to strengthen it next season to attempt promotion. Brampton Football Club is for adult players. We have two teams in the Cambs League currently in the Premier 32 THE Brampton MAGAZINE
