1 Volume 24, Issue 9 September 2018 Friends of Thorntown Public Library and Sugar Creek Historical Society Receive Heritage Grants Efforts to preserve local history are getting a boost from the Indiana Historical Society's (IHS's) statewide Heritage Support Grant program. IHS is proud to award grants to Friends of Thorntown Public Library, Inc., and Sugar Creek Historical Society, Inc. The funding comes from the fifth round of IHS's Heritage Support Grant program, made possible by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. Since the program's launch in 2016, grant funds from the Endowment have allowed IHS to award an average of $500,000 per grant cycle to organizations in 53 of Indiana's 92 counties. This is the first Heritage Support Grant for Friends of Thorntown Public Library. The organization will receive $10,000 to replace the roof of the Thorntown Heritage Museum, located at 124 W. Main St. in Thorntown. The Thorntown Heritage Museum is maintained by the Sugar Creek Historical Society, which also received its first Heritage Support Grant. Unique among this round of grant recipients, the organization received $15,000 to continue restoration work that began with an Eagle Scout project. Western Boone High School graduate Reece Thompson's project led to a study and the restoration of headstones at Thorntown Colored Cemetery, located west of Thorntown on County Road 825 West. The new funding will help add a fence and a historic marker. To learn more about the Thorntown Heritage Museum or the Thorntown Public Library, visit For more information about the Heritage Support Grant program, call (317) or visit THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 FOR LABOR DAY.
2 PAGE 2 Festival Fun! Thorntown Festival of the Turning Leaves is just around the corner! This year s event kicks off at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 28 with the popular Bluegrass Jam and continues through the weekend. Families are invited to watch a free movie at the park, followed by a fireworks show! The library and Thorntown Heritage Museum will be participating in the festival Parade at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and the museum will be open 9-5 Saturday and 12-4 Sunday. The museum will have several vendors on the lawn and new displays will also be available, so be sure to stop by during the Festival! Back by popular demand: Dave s Barrel Train will be on site at the museum from 2:30-4:30 on Saturday! The train will load and unload at the museum s west parking area. There is no charge for rides. If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of main street, visit the Thorntown Heritage Museum or stop in the library meeting rooms to peruse our selection of gently-used books, magazines, and DVDs! See you at the festival! Fall Book Sale September 28-October 3 The fall book sale will take place Friday, Sept. 28 through Wednesday, Oct. 3 in the library s meeting rooms. The sale will be open early from 5-8 Thursday, 9-6 Friday, 10-6 Saturday, and 11-4 Sunday, and will open during library hours Monday and Tuesday. Books are available for free will donation. The fall sale will include donated items and ex-library materials. Volunteers are needed to help set up the book sale on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.; a perk of volunteering is the opportunity to shop while working! A sign-up sheet is available for any who wish to help set up, take down, or work at the sale. Book Discussion This month s book discussion selection is Mountain Top by popular Christian fiction author Robert Whitlow. Discussion will take place on Monday, September 10 at 1:30 p.m. in the young adult room. There are still copies available to check out; stop by the adult circulation desk to pick one up and plan to join the group! It s Library Card Sign-up Month! If you re reading this newsletter, you probably already realize that a library card is a powerful card to have in your wallet (or on your keyring). Encourage your friends and neighbors to visit the library and learn all that we have to offer! Prospective patrons can call the library for card eligibility requirements.
