1 Bremerton Yacht Club Volume MMXVi, Issue 1 January 2016 Commodore look back and a look ahead. Happy New A Year Shipmates. As I review the year this is what I see. Our Memorial Day Cruise saw 24 boats and almost 60 attendees by boat or car and a terrific time. The two picnics in the park each saw record and increasing attendance. The pig roast, despite the burned pig and burning trees promptly doused by the fire department, was a huge hit with record attendees again. The Labor Day Cruise with 32 boats and almost 90 attendees, by boat or car was an event for the ages. Our Salmon bake and the Oktoberfest feasts were likewise superbly attended. The Halloween cruise saw heavy rain and high winds accompanied by high spirits. Two dinner meetings with guest speakers from the Coast Guard and the Weather Guy Mr. Lee Chesneau were informative and made us better and safer boaters. The Children s Christmas Party, Special People s Cruise, and the Christmas Dinner too were all brilliantly conducted. As I write this, fourteen boats are marshaling for the first of our two lighted boat parades. So in summary for 2015, I ask you to congratulate yourselves on terrific planning, production and participation. I look forward to 2016 with great anticipation. Check the calendar for the January America s Boating Course, a cruise to Poulsbo, Spaghetti feed, February Heavy Weather, March a cruise to Brownsville and a dinner meeting with a Seattle Yacht Club Opening Day presentation by the Admiralette, the Children s Easter Egg Hunt and party, April Daffodil in Tacoma, Seattle Opening Day first weekend in May, BYC awards night and Change of Watch. So there is certainly something for everyone. I continue to be impressed and delighted by the participation of our club members. Current members, a boatload of enthusiastic new members, the bridge, flag officers, executive committee, c o n t e n t s store personnel, and Past Commodores have all been such a joy to work with during my tenure. Above that I am ecstatic that so many members used their boats as much as they did. It delights me to no end that my late grandfather s words to get the boat out and knock some grass off the hull have apparently been heeded. He would be pleased. The bottom line is we are a yacht club so use the boats. Happy New Year, shipmates! Is this a great club or what?! Nautical Trivia: Took the wind out of his sails - Often we use took the wind out of his sails to describe getting the best of an opponent in an argument. Originally it described a battle maneuver of sailing ships. One ship would pass close to its adversary and on its windward side. The ship and sails would block the wind from the second vessel, causing it to lose headway. Losing motion meant losing maneuverability and the ability to carry on a fight. Cheers, Commodore, Mike Murray Vice Commodore Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. It s always nice when family and friends can get together for this joyous time. We had a wonderful time at the Port Orchard Yacht Club New Year s Eve Party. Hats off to ALL of the members for making the December s Events so successful. Your support is greatly appreciated! We had, I believe, record numbers in attendance at all of these events. This was the 1st year that I have had our boat out for the Special People s Cruise and the Lighted Boat Parade. They were both excellent, and I look forward to being a part of them again next year. 2 January is a busy month for the Jr. Officers, and likely so for the Commodore as well. The Grand 14 Officer Cruise-In to the Queen City Yacht Club s out station, then Edmonds Yacht Club for their Jr. Officer Ball, and followed by Meydenbauer Yacht Club s Jr. Officer Ball. These are all Friday night through Sunday activities. But don t forget to mark your calendars for January 22nd Spaghetti and Meat Ball Dinner at our fantastic Club. In closing a quote from Benjamin Franklin: When you re finished changing, you re finished. We look forward to seeing everyone at our events and around the Club, Vice Commodore, Dan Saikkonen Rear Commodore Wow, was December ever a special month for celebrating the Christmas and holiday season at BYC! Thank you to CAPT Jan Cordodor and her team for coordinating the Family Christmas potluck. The kids were all well entertained making Christmas ornaments and then we all enjoyed a great potluck dinner. And then the highlight of the evening when Santa dropped in. Thank you PC Billings for making those arrangements. The Special People s Cruise and Christmas dinner were, as recounted in messages from the Commodore, very special, very well attended, and great fellowship events appropriate for the season. Well done all. The Lighted Boat Parade was another big success. Thank you to PC Mike and Billie Henry for leading the parade on Peachy Keen. And to CAPTs Steve and Deanna Brett for parading Santa around on Ocean Jewel. My special thanks to CAPTs Buzz Priestly and Brian Jespersen for providing hours of Santa duty on deck in the sometimes blustery and always chilly weather, and to CAPT Lee Anne Derror for spotting for Santa. We had a great turnout with 22 boats on Saturday and near that number on Friday, including Old Man IV plus boats from Brownsville and Port Orchard Yacht clubs. Santa received 371 announcements from the community for the two nights, and it was very clear from all of the cheers back from the shores that many families (mine included) still make the Lighted Boat Parade a big part of their holiday season to gather with family and friends. And finally, thank you to CAPTs Paula and Bob Lewis and Ruth Murray for the holiday cheer after the parade Friday night. You warmed more than a few souls. Our final holiday event, after the New Year s Eve functions at both of the Poulsbo and Port Orchard Yacht Clubs, will be the Un-Decorating of the Club House. That will take place on Saturday, 2 January starting at 10:00 am. Lunch will be provided. A busy January awaits us, including the BYC cruise to Poulsbo, several Grand 14 officer events, and the First Of Season Predicted Log Race hosted by QCYC and our own Thompson Trophy Race at the end of the month. Lots of different opportunities to see you out there. Thanks again to the many who have provided so much support, Rear Commodore, John Burwell Please remember: Towline submissions are due by the 18 th of each month. BYC ANNUAL NOTICE The Bremerton Yacht Club annual is here. You can pick up your copy from the BYC store. 6 Skipperettes Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. We are over the hump of the shortest day of the year and on the uphill slope to longer days here real soon! If you didn t attended our Christmas Auction last month you missed out on a fun evening. There was an array of wonderful auction items presented by our Auction Committee Auctioneers Mona Lisa Ryan and Janene and Joanne Gonzalez. Pam Smith put her special touch on holiday table decorations, Debbie Gonzalez and her committee knocked it out of the park with their dessert with all the trimmings including wine and punch. Once again the Skipperettes prepared and served the Special People s dinner thanks to Cochairs Joanne Gonzalez and Georgene Smith and their committee of helpers. Our VP Susan LeBas did another outstanding, third year in a row, Chairperson of the Bremerton Yacht Club s Special People s Cruise A job very well done, thanks Susan! Our January 6th Potluck Luncheon is just around the corner as well as our Skipper s Night on February 3rd. Remember if you are not a Skipperette yet, come to our meetings and find out what we are about. You might discover that our group is one you would like to be a part of. New members always bring new ideas to Skipperettes for the future. Give me or our membership chairperson, Jan Cordodor a call and come as our guest.
