3 Page 3 From The Bridge Commodore Carol Byvid commodore@pittsburgyc.com April Already?? What a wild and wooly year it has been so far. This last month, we saw such diverse activities as attending a San Jose Shark s Game (with the attendant Bus Ride!) and again a Great First Sunday. Two Clubs cruised-in and what a stupendous St. Patrick s Day Dinner presented by the O Schoenthaler Family. It was also a time to remember Dan O Connor who is sorely missed. We had our Quarterly Birthday/Anniversary Potluck, a Dinner presented by STS Academy (yummy!!) and of course, our ever present Rentals thanks to our busy Rental Committee. Thank you one and all for your participation AND for those who worked so hard to present the events. This month we are looking forward to Several Rentals, a First Sunday presentation, our Cruise-Out to Stockton (Down Town/Harbor) and of course, PYC s Opening Day on the Delta. Don t forget about Opening Day on the Bay which will be just a great event. In May, we are looking forward to PYC s Annual Cinco de Mayo Party among other happenings. Look for more information on each of these events. It seems we cannot get away from failing large pieces of equipment. This time it was our trusty Coffee Maker. Hopefully by the time you read this, we will have a new one. The new ice maker and water heater seem to be doing just fine. (I do hope I have not just jinxed this!!) Maybe April will be the turning point. That is it for the moment. Again thanks to all who have worked so hard to make our club the Jewel of the Delta. Carol Buyvid FROM THE BAR DECK VICE COMMODORE Glen Abrams glensusan08@gmail.com Wow! Thank you for a great February! Our treasurer believes it set a record and I can confirm that it was a big month! It s all thanks to you members for coming out and supporting our club with all the wonderful events we had in February 1st Sunday Mardi Gras, our Crab Feed, Eddie Hart s Valentine s dinner dance, and Friday night dinners. Thanks too go to our bartenders Kandi and Kat for their continued great service and to Rich too for pitching in when I can t be there. Editor: Sandi Lee Looking forward to March s Corned Beef & Cabbage Feast being put on by the O Schoenthaler clan this year to honor the memory of our own dearly departed leprechaun, Dan O Connor. So remember to raise a toast to big Dan and while were at it let us also toast the memory of another departed leprechaun, Floyd Harley. Sure miss these guys but they will be with us in spirit guiding Craig, Vickie and kids to deliver an awesome dinner and party for the Irish in all of us. I ll be looking forward to helping the ladies pour you an Irish Whiskey, or Irish Coffee or whatever you re favorite libation may be. So I missed giving you another way to say cheers in March. So this month you get two! Since French is supposed to be the language of love, if you want to toast your cherie you could say Sainte pronounced Sahn tay or you could toast your lassie with Slainte pronounced Slawn-cha. Notice how similar these two salutations look and yet are pronounced completely different. From behind the bar, Glen From the Poop Deck Rear Commodore Ken Esse (925) kenesse@astound.net A Star is born : I heard that we have an accomplished entertainer within our PYC family. A few weeks back at the Sportsman Club, our own Ms. Carol Teiche became a singing sensation belting out tunes from music provided by our own Karaoke group, Past Commodore Max Gonzales and another headliner, Debbie Wagner. Wish I had been there. How does this sound: PYC Friday with Karaoke & Dancing? I can tell when the club is doing well by the number of linens and napkins I order each week. Once again a great First Sunday produced by our Jeanie Pedersen and our Saint Patrick s Day party put on by Vicki & Craig Schoenthaler and Dorothy O Connor, as a special memory feast for our late Captain and friend Dan O Connor. We had over 70 people attending this St. Patties event. March 7th, was provided by the Pittsburg High Culinary class. The food was great and a special thanks to Director Sharon Rintala and Jan Cutaia for putting it all together. Last Sunday, Lindy, myself and Director Jerry Hornak spent 4 to 5 hours weed whacking and power washing the Makai, that is water side in Hawaiian, of the club. To witness this day of labor just look out the window from the bar and notice that the street light is CLEAN. NOTE: Ms. Lindy weeded the City of Pittsburg property by the Commodore s parking stall should we send them an invoice? Another Club positive: Have you noticed recently that almost every and Friday evenings we have new members and prospective new members at the Club? YES, this is cool. Happy sailing Ken Esse Rear Commodore

4 Page 4 Wow, here we are into April. As for March, we had two cruise-ins: First, Bridge Marina Yacht Club and then following weekend, we had Solano Yacht Club for our St. Paddy s Party. April is the month for all Opening Days of Yachting Season. Ours will be April 21st and we will have the Wooden Boat Club visiting us. We will have the Blessing of the Fleet, an Open House and a Parade of Boats. Please bring your boat to the Club we will make room for all. If you were at the last meeting you heard this will probably be a record year for visiting Yacht Clubs. We have a lot of bookings from last year that have already confirmed, plus we are getting calls from clubs that have not been here before. In the months of July and September, we have 5 clubs cursing in each of those months. 6 Page 6 This month it was sadly reported that Dave Henderson's father passed away. We are sorry to hear this and we send our deepest condolences to Dave and his family. It was also reported that Carol Promessi's father had emergency heart surgery recently and we hope the procedures were successful and that he will heal fast and feel well soon. This is all the news I have for this month and until next month stay healthy and happy. Mari EDITOR SANDI LEE sandi@graphiclee.com Hi Everyone! If you have not attended one of these meetings, it consists of a regular business agenda with reports of all officers and committee chairs and a Report of Clubs which is a forum for member clubs to publicize upcoming events that may be of interest to other boaters. Upcoming events of interest to P.Y.C.: April 2 Marina West Yacht Club Social Hour 1800 Dinner If the Board or Committee Chairs (First Sunday?) would like to publicize any upcoming events, provide me with 100 fliers prior to the meeting and I will announce it and pass out the fliers, or I can announce without the flier expense. Info@ Next Month COTY Points, is PYC really only a 1 Star club? We were in RBOC Recreational Boaters of California [RBOC] is a nonprofit advocacy organization that works to protect and enhance the interests of the state s recreational boaters before the legislative and executive branches of state and local government. RBOC was formed as a statewide organization in 1968 and from that date forward has continued its commitment to promoting the enjoyment, protection, and responsible use of our waterways. There are a Plethora of threats to recreational boating on the horizon, a listing and description of them is available on the RBOC. I encourage all members to read and become familiar with these issues. When the time is right I will contact you to respond to any Calls to Arms. Right now our main concern is with the latest attempt to eliminate the Department of Boating and Waterways and misappropriate our fuel tax dollars for non-boating uses. This is the latest and most serious assault upon the department. Most of you have responded to the call by signing and sending letters. If you have not, please go to this site, Save Cal Boating, and follow the instructions. Committee hearings were held in Sacramento by the Senate Budget and Fiscal Review Subcommittee #2 on March 21and March 28 by the Assembly Budget Subcommittee #3. As this report goes to press, we don t know the results. But, stay tuned, I m certain further action will be required to quell this raid on boaters rights and resources. Ed
