We attended the Carling Ball last night and had a great time. Both Ann and Pam Larson were able to win nice baskets in the raffle. Next week is our Commodores Ball and both Ann and I are looking forward to it. Hard to believe it is that time already. We have a couple of events left before the end of the year. After the Ball the next cruise will be the Hot Butter Rum. That should be a fun cruise and will be at one of my favorite places. Blake Island. I remember in years past having deer come right up to us in the field. Should be lots of fun and now that they have power on Blake it should be even better. Hope we have a good turnout. The Labor Day cruise was nonstop fun and had a little of everything! We had good food (with the club and at the Blackberry Festival), Trivia, Boat Blessings, Bingo and plenty of sunshine. You could not have asked for a better cruise! Last weekend was our VYC Poker Run. All the VYC volunteers were pleasantly surprised by the weather as the last day of summer concluded and left us with a lasting memory of a beautiful sunny day. A lunch at Rock the Dock was included in the ticket price and a good time was had by all! Thanks to those who supported your club. Our September meeting is fast approaching and I hope to see everyone s smiling faces. This meeting is always a fun one as we recap the summer s mishaps through the annual award nominations and get a chance to laugh at ourselves. Come share a story or two or simply enjoy some of those shared by others. We have more activities and with that means more FUN times. The next cruise is Hot Ruddered Bum, hosted by Wayne & Donna Davidson. It s back at Blake Island this year and should be a great way to wrap up the cruise season. Also coming up is our Commodore Ball on October 5th!!! Take this opportunity to say thank you to Dave & Ann for all they have contributed this year. Carla has planned a great event and we hope everyone can come. Lastly, we have the Change of Watch on November 2 nd. Come join us while we sending out the old and welcoming the new! I want to say thanks to my Viking family for all the good times we shared and in addition, I am thrilled that there is more boating to come! Motor on Vice Commodore Tracy anspach@comcast.net As the summer boating season is winding down, we are now looking at our last official club cruise Hot Rudder Bum to Blake Island. I hope that we will have great weather for that weekend. This year we will have a large hut with a fire, a welcomed change for fall weather! Blake Island has power and is first come first serve for moorage, rafting on the dock is required should marina reach capacity. We have room for everyone! Our Commodore Ball for Davie Seis is just days away. This is the time of year that new board members and the Rear Commodore nominations, please take the time to send us your nomination ballot in this issue of the Lur. Voting will take place at our October meeting, and then right around the corner is the Change of Watch to welcome in your 2014 Board & Bridge. Working on the details for the Christmas Dinner on August 8 th. Details will be coming out soon. The new Rear Commodore for 2014 will be working on the cruise schedule for next year. PC/Purser Barb Mortgage Interest Write Off for Boats: Legislation introduced by Representatives Mike Quigley (D- Illinois) and Tim Walz (D-Minnesota) would amend a tax provision that allows boat owners to write off their mortgage interest payments if they classify their boats as second homes. The bill that would eliminate the tax deduction for boats is titled The Ending Taxpayer Subsidies for Yachts Act. According to Rep. Quigley there s absolutely no reason why taxpayers should subsidize luxury yachts, especially when the vital education and living assistance programs people rely on are threatened with massive cuts. Currently, taxpayers are allowed to deduct mortgage interest for up to two homes from their tax returns. Boats equipped for living aboard with staterooms, head and galley qualify even if they are not used as a primary residence. The bill would limit the tax deduction to only those who use their boats as a primary residence. According to Rep. Walz, the bill s co-sponsor The Mortgage Interest Deduction was made to help middle class families own a home and achieve the American Dream, not to subsidize yachts for the super-rich. According to the Washington Wave, the National Marine Manufacturers Assoc. (NMMA) newsletter, NMMA staff met with Rep. Quigley s tax staff, conveying concern that the bill singles out the recreational boating industry rather that tackling the general issues surrounding deductions.
