2 A Scout is clean on the inside! What kid doesn t like to get messy, at least a little. We have lots of clean/dirty fun to offer at this year s family camp. Read on to get the low-down on what you need to bring, what you will be doing, and to have as a reference at camp. It may seem like a lot of information, but a lot goes into preparing and running a successful and fun-filled camp. Our council-trained directors and staff have worked hard for months to prepare for this camp. Please see the director if you have any questions or concerns. Campsite Hosts will be present at each campsite to ensure that your campsite/ Pack gets to the correct activities on time. They will also help the kids practice the buddy system, and help the campsite come up with a skit, song, or cheer for the campfire program. However, it is YOUR responsibility to watch your child by having a wonderful experience. At Camp Buck Toms, all of the campsites have Adirondack style shelters (3 sided), modern outdoor bath houses and more. You ll want to bring a tent to ensure being able to bunk together as a family, as there are a limited number of bunk shelters at each campsite. More info is listed in this guide. Bring your family and an enthusiastic attitude, and you are sure to have fun! If you have special needs (accessibility, equipment, food allergies/intolerances, severe allergies, etc.), please let us know before camp starts so we can make the appropriate accommodations at campsites, the Dining Hall, and Health Lodge. 5 MAP NOT TO SCALE Knoxville to Camp Buck Toms Camp Buck Toms Address for GPS: 373 Camp Buck Toms Rd, Rockwood, TN ) Take I-40W to Exit number 347 (US-27/Harriman/Rockwood/Roane State Community College). 2) Turn Left onto TN-61 South toward Rockwood. Drive for 8.7 miles, passing Rockwood red-lights number 1 through 6, to Nelson Street (Wooden Camp Buck Toms 10 mi. sign). 3) Turn Left at the historic Highway Patrol station onto Nelson Street (there is a turn lane). At 0.8 miles, bear right as the street becomes Abels Valley Road and drive for 1.4 miles. 4) Bear Left at the Y on Abels Valley Road; drive for 1.9 miles to Winton Chapel Road (Wooden Camp Buck Toms 5.2 mi. sign). 5) Turn Left onto Winton Chapel Road; drive 4.9 miles on Winton Chapel, following wooden Camp Buck Toms signs. 6) Turn Left onto Camp Buck Toms Road (Wooden Camp Buck Toms sign) and drive 1.9 miles until you reach a large parking lot. 6 IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT DRIVING IN CAMP You will be allowed to drive down the road (one way) to drop off your belongings on a tarp located at the edge of the road. You may not pull off the pavement. You must stay on the paved road with your car running. PLEASE do not leave a scout unattended with your gear while you park your car back at the upper parking lot. Once check-in time is closed. ONLY identified staff vehicles will be allowed to drive through camp. On Sunday after Chapel, you will be allowed to drive to get your gear. If you need to leave before that time, you need to see a staff member or carry your gear to your vehicle. IMPORTANT ITEMS TO BRING Appropriate clothes for the weather Clothes you don t mind getting dirty Water bottle Class A (if you have one) for meals and ceremonies Class B (scout themed t-shirt) to wear during activities Food for Friday supper and Saturday lunch plus snacks Jacket / Coat Sleeping bag, pad, and pillow Fully enclosed shoes no Crocs, no Keens Flashlight or lantern Rain jacket / windbreaker Tent, or tarp for Adirondack CHECKING IN & OUT OF CAMP You must check in at registration on arrival so we have a record of who is at camp and so we have a copy of your health forms on hand. Check in on Friday is between 6 and 8 pm, and on Saturday between 7:30 and 9 am. You must check out before you leave camp (regardless of if you leave early or at the end of camp). That way we don t go searching for you before we lock up and go home. You won t get your patch otherwise. Radios, ipods and MP3 players, electronic games and other electronic devices should stay at home. Camp is an outdoor experience, and these items are not appropriate for that experience. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteering/Service is a key component of Scouting. For this camp to run smoothly and to provide you and your family the best possible camp experience, each Pack and/or Campsite must provide at least 3 volunteers to fill the following needs: 1. Camp Guide/Host: If there are multiple packs at a campsite, there MAY be multiple guides. The guides are responsible for the following: Help Scouts from your campsite/pack stay in the proper rotation and get to the correct places on time. Promote practice of the buddy system for all youth (including non-scouts) and make sure that BSA Youth Protection policies are followed, and if not, contact the Director. Work with the campsite to provide a skit, song, or cheer for campfire program (see Campfire Program Emcee for approval) 2. Dining Hall: at least 2 (preferably more) volunteers from each Pack and/or Campsite to serve and help with Dining Hall cleanup. Webelos and Boy Scouts can help with Dining Hall cleanup. 3. Activity Stations: at least 1 volunteer from each Pack and/or Campsite to assist activity leaders. Family Camp Guidelines Page 6 Spring 2017

7 IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT CAMP BUCK TOMS No smoking in camp. No alcoholic beverages OR firearms permitted on Camp Buck Toms property. Camp Buck Toms has a total of 18 campsites, with Campsite 3 offering accessibility for the physically challenged. Photos of the campsites can be found at Each campsite has a fire pit, flag pole, message board, covered pavilion with picnic tables and lights, two 4-person Adirondacks (3-sided bunk shelters), and two or more 8-person Adirondacks (rules for Adirondacks provided below). A few campsites still have some of the old tent platforms. Campsites 8/9, 10/11, 12/13 and 15 have enough flat space for several tents. The others have more limited continuous flat space. Modern bath-houses are available, and each is shared by two campsites, with the exception of Campsites 3, 14, 15 and 16. Each bath-house has two sides each consisting of two toilet stalls and one shower, with a two-sided sink in the middle. A water spigot is located outside. Rules for bathhouse use are provided below. No electrical/extension cords are allowed to be run from building to building. Plugs for charging phones, cameras, equipment, etc., are located in the covered pavilions and bath-houses. Camp Buck Toms is a beautiful but hilly camp but currently has no way to move the physically disabled around camp on a routine basis. While we invite you to join us, you must make arrangements with the staff to drive or to bring your own rough-terrain wheelchair or disability-specific Electric Powered Assisted Mobility Device (EPAMD) to camp if you need it. Even with such a device some areas will still be inaccessible. Charging of such devices may not be convenient to your sleeping area. Paved (concrete or asphalt) walkways are present in a limited number of places at Camp Buck Toms: Road from the Parade Field area to the lakefront (becomes gravel past the lakefront); Sidewalk from the parking lot to the Camp Office; Sidewalks in the vicinity of the Parade Field, Dining Hall, Health Lodge and Training/STEM Lodge; and Walkways at Campsite 3. Campsite 3 has facilities for people with physical disabilities. It has a paved walkway that provides easy access to the Camp Office, Dining Hall and Training/STEM Lodge; one 4-person, and three 8- person accessible Adirondacks (3-sided bunk shelters); and accessible bath-house. It is the policy of Camp Buck Toms that any group may be moved or asked to share Campsite 3 if the need arises. No Exceptions. If you have a Scout or family member that requires Campsite 3, please contact us as soon as possible before arriving at camp. CPAP or other medically-necessary devices should be able to operate on a rechargeable energy source. If electricity is needed for these, contact the Camp Director before camp starts. 8 YOUTH PROTECTION POLICY BSA Youth Protection policies are to be followed at all times: 2-deep leadership (2 registered leaders, or 1 registered leader and 1 adult) and no 1-on-1 contact with youth not your own children at all times. No one is allowed to sleep in a structure (e.g., tent) with a person of the opposite sex or an adult other than his or her own spouse, parent or guardian. Adult males, adult females, youth males, and youth females must bunk in separate structures or may opt to bunk with their families. ADIRONDACK RULES In keeping with BSA youth protection policies, courteous use, and best camping practices, the following rules are mandatory for using the Adirondacks: 1. A single family may bunk together in an Adirondack. Two families may share an 8-person Adirondack only if a tarp is hung between the two sides (there is a metal rod for this). If you have 4 people or fewer in your family, please do not spread out across an 8-person Adirondack. Tarps are not provided by camp and must be brought by Packs or families. 2. No one is permitted to sleep in an Adirondack with a person of the opposite sex or an adult other than his or her own spouse, parent, or guardian. With the exception of rule No. 1 above, adult males, adult females, youth males, and youth females must bunk in separate Adirondacks, or families may opt to use a tent. 3. A tarp may be used for the front entrance to keep out the weather (there is a metal rod for this). Tarps are not provided by camp and must be brought by Packs or families. 4. No hammocks or tents are allowed inside or attached to the Adirondacks. 5. No hanging from the bars or rafters inside the Adirondacks. 6. No eating in Adirondacks, as food debris attracts insects and small furry creatures (e.g., raccoons). 7. No loose food items in the Adirondacks. Store food in hard-sided containers, preferably ones that latch. BATH-HOUSE RULES In keeping with BSA youth protection policies, the following rules are mandatory for using the bathhouses. 1. Only one of the following groups may occupy a single side of the bath-house at a time: adult males, adult females, youth males, and youth females. 2. There are signs provided at your campsite/bath-house to designate what group is occupying a side of the bath-house (male/female, youth/adult). Please use these consistently. 3. Call out prior to entering a side of the bath-house to see who is in there, in case the sign was not used properly. For example, adults call out, Are there any kids in here? and youth call out, Are there any adults in here? 4. If children need adult assistance for the bathroom (or shower), only a parent or legal guardian may be present with that child in the bath-house. Please use the side for the gender of the parent/guardian. 5. In case of accident or medical emergency, a non-parent/guardian may enter the side of the bathhouse of youth, regardless of gender. 9 MORE IMPORTANT INFO No electronic devices (radios, tablets, ipods and MP3 players, electronic games or other electronic devices) for youth. Adults should limit the use of their phones/tablets in the presence of youth except to take pictures. Kids are distractible enough. Buddy System: All youth must have a buddy and travel across camp paired with their buddy. Youth should not move about the camp alone at any time. The safety of our children is paramount. Buddies always know where their buddies are. Buddies must stay together at each activity, at lunch, and even at the restrooms. Two buddies must accompany a camper sent from a program area if the camper may not return to that program area. Each Campsite will move as a group through the activity stations. Please stick to your Campsite s rotation. Moving from your assigned rotation will overload activity station capacity. Vehicles: are not allowed at campsites, although unit trailers may be present without towing vehicle. Drop your gear at your campsite and return vehicle to the parking area. Set up camp after returning your vehicle to the parking area. All vehicles must return to the parking lot at the top of the hill prior to 9:30 am on Saturday. Vehicles are not allowed past the main parking area after 9:30 am on Saturday. If you must arrive after 9:30 am, pack accordingly or bring a wagon to carry your gear to your campsite. Violating vehicles may be towed at the owner s expense. Store food and sugary drinks in hard-sided containers, preferably ones that latch. Avoid leaving food debris on the ground or picnic tables, as they attract insects and opportunistic furry creatures. Knives: are allowed only for properly trained adults. Fixed blade/sheath knives are prohibited for everyone. Scouts are not allowed to bring knives to camp. Shooting Sports: All youth and adults are to follow the instructions of the Range Officers at all times. No exceptions. Failure to do so will result in removal from the activity. No firearms, BB guns, or archery equipment are allowed on camp property other than that provided by camp at the shooting ranges. Dining Hall: Some meals will be served in the Dining Hall. Please keep the following in mind: The entire campsite sits together: Scouts, parents/adults, leaders, and guides. Secoooooooooooooonds! will be announced after everyone is fed; keep your tray for seconds. When you are done, take your trays, cups and eating utensils to the kitchen, and clean off the tables with the materials provided. Remember, a Scout is helpful, and a scout is clean. Campfires: Fire rings are provided in each campsite. Please use them wisely. Collect only dead wood or bring kiln-dried or local firewood. Do not use live trees or branches. Only wood to go in fire and stay in fire; no flames outside of fire ring. No running/horseplay near fire ring; no roasted marshmallow (or other food) slinging contests. Have a bucket of water nearby (having a shovel is a good idea too). Fires require adult supervision at all times. A fire must be fully extinguished if a responsible adult will not be there to watch it. Waterfront Activities: Includes fishing, watching others fish or playing along the waterfront. All waterfront activities require adult supervision. Youth protection policies must be followed. Fishing requires a fishing license for all involved adults and is to be catch-and-release. Fishing is allowed only from the fishing dock. Family Camp Guidelines Page 9 Spring 2017

10 When You Leave: Leave your campsite as you found it or in better condition. Pick up all trash and food debris. Clean and sweep the bath-houses. Make sure lights in bath-houses and pavilions are turned off. Check for left items in Adirondacks and bath-houses and bring them to admin when you check out. Remember, a Scout is helpful, and a Scout is clean. First Aid: Guidelines on when to administer first aid or visit the Camp Health Officer: In the event of an illness or injury (especially a head injury), the affected person must go to the Health Lodge. If the person cannot make it to the Health Lodge, call the Camp Health Officer and/or Camp Director for assistance. All medical emergencies require calling the Camp Health Officer and/or Camp Director (see Emergency Procedures). Ticks must be removed and recorded by the Camp Health Officer at the Health Lodge. Minor scrapes and bruises can be dealt with at the campsite unless no first aid kit is available. Even if a person is not sent to the Health Lodge, any and all illnesses and injuries must be reported to the Camp Health Officer. Biohazards: Treat all vomit, spit, and blood as biohazards. Contact the Camp Health Officer for appropriate cleanup methods for people and objects if needed. Missing Person: A missing person may actually be misplaced. If you discover that a camper is missing, immediately notify the Camp Director. Serious Accidents or Health Emergencies: These may include broken bones, bleeding, concussions, fainting, heat stroke, hypothermia, seizures, severe allergic reactions, etc. In case of a serious accident or health emergency, take the following steps: 1. Report the emergency to the Camp Health Officer and/or Camp Director immediately. 2. Do not move the injured/ill person. Clear other campers away and continue camp activities. 3. Make the injured/ill person as comfortable as possible while waiting for the Health Officer and/or Camp Director. 4. Administer first aid if needed. 5. If the Health Officer or Camp Director determines that emergency personnel or equipment is required, provide a clear path to the injured/ill person for emergency personnel. Severe Weather: If severe weather occurs, the Camp director will sound the camp alarm and call Code Yellow over the radio. Campers should take the following steps: 1. Groups at indoor activities will remain in place. 2. Groups at outdoor activities will move in an orderly fashion to the nearest shelter. 3. In case of tornado, those at or near a campsite should proceed to the bath-house; Adirondacks are not tornado safe shelters. Those in open areas or open shelters should get in a ditch and cover their heads. 4. Await further instructions (e.g., all-clear alert over the radio) from the Camp Director before proceeding to the next camp activities. Fire: If a fire occurs in one of the buildings, notify the Camp Director immediately, and take the following steps: 1. Everyone move in an orderly manner out of the affected building and into the nearest open area. 2. Follow all instructions. Ensure that everyone stays put and out of the way of firefighters. Again, we thank you for choosing to attend Family Camp. Becoming familiar with and following the rules and guidance presented in this document will ensure that your family has fun at camp, and that the camp experience is the best it can possibly be for everyone.
